We introduce Hochschild (co-)homology of morphisms of schemes or analytic spaces and study its fundamental properties. In analogy with the cotangent complex we introduce the so called (derived) Hochschild complex of a morphism; the Hochschild cohomology and homology groups are then the Ext and Tor groups of that complex. We prove that these objects are well defined, extend the known cases, and have the expected functorial and homological properties such as graded commutativity of Hochschild cohomology and existence of the characteristic homomorphism from Hochschild cohomology to the (graded) centre of the derived category.
We investigate Hochschild cohomology and homology of admissible subcategories of derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties. We show that the Hochschild cohomology of an admissible subcategory is isomorphic to the derived endomorphisms of the kernel giving the corresponding projection functor, and the Hochschild homology is isomorphic to derived morphisms from this kernel to its convolution with the kernel of the Serre functor. We investigate some basic properties of Hochschild homology and cohomology of admissible subcategories. In particular, we check that the Hoch…
We generalize the decomposition theorem of Hochschild, Kostant and Rosenberg for Hochschild (co-)homology to arbitrary morphisms between complex spaces or schemes over a field of characteristic zero. To be precise, we show that for each such morphism, the Hochschild complex, as introduced in math.AG/0606593, decomposes naturally in the derived category into the direct sum of the derived symmetric powers of the shifted cotangent complex, a result due to Quillen in the affine case. Even in the affine case, our proof is new and provides further information. It shows that the decomposition is give…
In this paper we prove that for an affine scheme essentially of finite type over a field $F$ and of dimension $d$, $K_{d+1}$-regularity implies regularity, assuming that the characteristic of $F$ is zero. This verifies a conjecture of Vorst.
We perform Hochschild homology calculations in the algebro-geometric setting of motives. The motivic Hochschild homology coefficient ring contains torsion classes which arise from the mod-$p$ motivic Steenrod algebra and from generating functions on the natural numbers with finite non-empty support. Under the Betti realization, we recover Bökstedt's calculation of the topological Hochschild homology of finite prime fields.
Gabber's Theorem claims that the singular support of a D-module is involutive. We show how to give a conceptually clear proof of this in the context of Hochschild Homology and Cohomology of abelian categories.
Given a $k$--scheme $X$ that admits a tilting object $T$, we prove that the Hochschild (co-)homology of $X$ is isomorphic to that of $A= End_{X}(T)$. We treat more generally the relative case when $X$ is flat over an affine scheme $Y=\Spec R$ and the tilting object satisfies an appropriate Tor-independence condition over $R$. Among applications, Hochschild homology of $X$ over $Y$ is seen to vanish in negative degrees, smoothness of $X$ over $Y$ is shown to be equivalent to that of $A$ over $R$, and for $X$ a smooth projective scheme we obtain that Hochschild homology is concentrated in degree…
We consider derived invariants of varieties in positive characteristic arising from topological Hochschild homology. Using theory developed by Ekedahl and Illusie-Raynaud in their study of the slope spectral sequence, we examine the behavior under derived equivalences of various $p$-adic quantities related to Hodge-Witt and crystalline cohomology groups, including slope numbers, domino numbers, and Hodge-Witt numbers. As a consequence, we obtain restrictions on the Hodge numbers of derived equivalent varieties, partially extending results of Popa-Schell to positive characteristic.
An important step in the calculation of the triply graded link homology theory of Khovanov and Rozansky is the determination of the Hochschild homology of Soergel bimodules for SL(n). We present a geometric model for this Hochschild homology for any simple group G, as equivariant intersection homology of B x B-orbit closures in G. We show that, in type A these orbit closures are equivariantly formal for the conjugation T-action. We use this fact to show that in the case where the corresponding orbit closure is smooth, this Hochschild homology is an exterior algebra over a polynomial ring on ge…
A procedure for constructing bivariant theories by means of Grothendieck duality is developed. This produces, in particular, a bivariant theory of Hochschild (co)homology on the category of schemes that are flat, separated and essentially of finite type over a fixed noetherian scheme S. The theory takes values in the category of symmetric graded modules over the graded-commutative ring \oplus_i H^i(S,O_S). In degree i, the cohomology and homology H^0(S,O_S)-modules thereby associated to such an x: X -> S, with Hochschild complex H_x, are Ext^i(H_x, H_x) and Ext^{-i}(H_x, x^!O_S). This lays the…
We present a detailed computation of the cyclic and the Hochschild homology and cohomology of generic and 3-Calabi-Yau homogeneous down-up algebras. This family was defined by Benkart and Roby in their study of differential posets. Our calculations are completely explicit, by making use of the Koszul bimodule resolution and arguments similar to those used by the second and third authors for Yang-Mills algebras.
The goal of this paper is to establish fundamental properties of the Hochschild, topological Hochschild, and topological cyclic homologies of commutative, Noetherian rings, which are assumed only to be F-finite in the majority of our results. This mild hypothesis is satisfied in all cases of interest in finite and mixed characteristic algebraic geometry. We prove firstly that the topological Hochschild homology groups, and the homotopy groups of the fixed point spectra $TR^r$, are finitely generated modules. We use this to establish the continuity of these homology theories for any given ideal…
We define and study the Hochschild (co)homology of the second kind (known also as the Borel-Moore Hochschild homology and the compactly supported Hochschild cohomology) for curved DG-categories. An isomorphism between the Hochschild (co)homology of the second kind of a CDG-category B and the same of the DG-category C of right CDG-modules over B, projective and finitely generated as graded B-modules, is constructed. Sufficient conditions for an isomorphism of the two kinds of Hochschild (co)homology of a DG-category are formulated in terms of the two kinds of derived categories of DG-modules ov…
We give an account of the construction of the Bhatt--Morrow--Scholze motivic filtration on topological cyclic homology and related invariants, focusing on the case of equal characteristic $p$ and the connections to crystalline and de Rham--Witt theory.
We identify the equivariant structure of the filtered pieces of the motivic filtration defined by Bhatt, Morrow and Scholze on the topological Hochschild cohomology spectrum of polynomial algebras over $\mathbb{F}_p$.
We define the notion of a trace kernel on a manifold M. Roughly speaking, it is a sheaf on M x M for which the formalism of Hochschild homology applies. We associate a microlocal Euler class to such a kernel, a cohomology class with values in the relative dualizing complex of the cotangent bundle over M and we prove that this class is functorial with respect to the composition of kernels. This generalizes, unifies and simplifies various results of (relative) index theorems for constructible sheaves, D-modules and elliptic pairs.
We study the behavior of cohomological support loci of the canonical bundle under derived equivalence of smooth projective varieties. This is achieved by investigating the derived invariance of a generalized version of Hochschild homology. Furthermore, using techniques coming from birational geometry, we establish the derived invariance of the Albanese dimension for varieties having non-negative Kodaira dimension. We apply our machinery to study the derived invariance of the holomorphic Euler characteristic and of certain Hodge numbers for special classes of varieties. Further applications con…
We give a short proof of Kaledin's theorem on the degeneration of the noncommutative Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequence. Our approach is based on topological Hochschild homology and the theory of cyclotomic spectra. As a consequence, we also obtain relative versions of the degeneration theorem, both in characteristic zero and for regular bases in characteristic $p$.
We develop the Hochschild analogue of the coniveau spectral sequence and the Gersten complex. Since Hochschild homology does not have devissage or A^1-invariance, this is a little different from the K-theory story. In fact, the rows of our spectral sequence look a lot like the Cousin complexes in Hartshorne's 1966 "Residues & Duality". Note that these are for coherent cohomology. We prove that they agree by an 'HKR isomorphism with supports'. Using the close ties of Hochschild homology to Lie algebra homology, this gives residue maps in Lie homology, which we show to agree with those à la Tate…
Let $X$ be a smooth proper scheme over a field of characteristic 0. Following D. Shklyarov [10], we construct a (non-degenerate) pairing on the Hochschild homology of $\per{X}$, and hence, on the Hochschild homology of $X$. On the other hand the Hochschild homology of $X$ also has the Mukai pairing (see [1]). If $X$ is Calabi-Yau, this pairing arises from the action of the class of a genus 0 Riemann-surface with two incoming closed boundaries and no outgoing boundary in $\text{H}_{0}({\mathcal M}_0(2,0))$ on the algebra of closed states of a version of the B-Model on $X$. We show that these pa…
Given a nontrivial semi-orthogonal decomposition $\Perf(\X)=\langle \mathcal{A},\mathcal{B}\rangle$, and assume that the base locus of $ω_{\X}$ is a proper closed subset, it was proved by Kotaro Kawatani and Shinnosuke Okawa that all skyscraper sheaves $\k(\x)$ with $\x\notin \mathsf{Bs}\vert ω_{\X}\vert$ belong to exactly one and only one of the components. It is natural to ask which one it is, and whether we can determine this by certain linear invariants. In this note we use Hochschild homology of derived category of coherent sheaves with support to provide another proof that if the $-\n^þ$…
The $K$-theory of a polynomial ring $R[t]$ contains the $K$-theory of $R$ as a summand. For $R$ commutative and containing $\Q$, we describe $K_*(R[t])/K_*(R)$ in terms of Hochschild homology and the cohomology of Kähler differentials for the $cdh$ topology. We use this to address Bass' question, on whether $K_n(R)=K_n(R[t])$ implies $K_n(R)=K_n(R[t_1,t_2])$. The answer is positive over fields of infinite transcendence degree; the companion paper arXiv:1004.3829 provides a counterexample over a number field.
We first review various known algebraic structures on the Hochschild (co)homology of a differential graded algebras under weak Poincar{é} duality hypothesis, such as Calabi-Yau algebras, derived Poincar{é} duality algebras and closed Frobenius algebras. This includes a BV-algebra structure on $HH^*(A,A^\vee)$ or $HH^*(A,A)$, which in the latter case is an extension of the natural Gerstenhaber structure on $HH^*(A,A)$. As an example, after proving that the chain complex of the Moore loop space of a manifold $M$ is a CY-algebra and using Burghelea-Fiedorowicz-Goodwillie theorem we obtain a BV-st…
