We compute by a purely local method the (elliptic) twisted by transpose-inverse character χ_{π_Y} of the representation π_Y=I_{(3,1)}(1_3xχ_Y) of G=GL(4,F), where F is a p-adic field, p not 2, and Y is an unramified quadratic extension of F; χ_Y is the nontrivial character of F^\x/N_{Y/F}Y^x. The representation π_Y is normalizedly induced from \pmatrix m_3&\ast 0&m_1\endpmatrix \mapstoχ_Y(m_1), m_i in GL(i,F), on the maximal parabolic subgroup of type (3,1). We show that the twisted character χ_{π_Y} of π_Y is an unstable function: its value at a twisted regular elliptic conjugacy class with norm in C_Y=``GL(2,Y)/F^x'' is minus its value at the other class within the twisted stable conjugacy class. It is zero at the classes without norm in C_Y. Moreover π_Y is the endoscopic lift of the trivial representation of C_Y. We deal only with unramified Y/F, as globally this case occurs almost everywhere. Naturally this computation plays a role in the theory of lifting of C_Y and GSp(2) to GL(4) using the trace formula.
Our work extends -- to the context of nontrivial central characters -- the work of math.NT/0606262, where representations of PGL(4,F) are studied. In math.NT/0606262 a 4-dimensional analogue of the model of the small representation of PGL(3,F) introduced with Kazhdan in a 3-dimensional case is developed, and the local method of computation introduced by us in the 3-dimensional case is extended. As in math.NT/0606262 we use here the classification of twisted (stable) regular conjugacy classes in GL(4,F).
We compute by a purely local method the elliptic, twisted by transpose-inverse, character χ_πof the representation π=I_{(3,1)}(1_3) of PGL(4,F) normalizedly induced from the trivial representation of the maximal parabolic subgroup of type (3,1), where F is a p-adic field. Put C=(GL(2,F)xGL(2,F))'/F^x (F^x embeds diagonally, prime means equal determinants). It is a twisted elliptic endoscopic group of PGL(4). We deduce from the computation that χ_πis an unstable function: its value at one twisted regular elliptic conjugacy class with norm in C is minus its value at the other class within the tw…
We provide a purely local computation of the (elliptic) twisted (by "transpose-inverse") character of the representation π=I(\1) of PGL(3) over a p-adic field induced from the trivial representation of the maximal parabolic subgroup. This computation is independent of the theory of the symmetric square lifting of [IV] of automorphic and admissible representations of SL(2) to PGL(3). It leads to a proof of the (unstable) fundamental lemma in the theory of the symmetric square lifting, namely that corresponding spherical functions (on PGL(2) and PGL(3)) are matching: they have matching orbital i…
In their recent work, the authors (2016) have combined classical ideas of A. G. Postnikov (1956) and N. M. Korobov (1974) to derive improved bounds on short character sums for certain nonprincipal characters with powerful moduli. In the present paper, these results are used to bound sums of the Mobius function twisted by characters of the same type, complementing and improving some earlier work of B. Green (2012). To achieve this, we obtain a series of results about the size and zero-free region of $L$-functions with the same class of moduli.
We use the asymptotic large sieve, developed by the authors, to prove that if the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis is true, then there exist many Dirichlet L-functions that have a pair of consecutive zeros closer together than 0.37 times their average spacing. More generally, we investigate zero spacings within the family of twists by Dirichlet characters of a fixed L-function and give precise bounds for small gaps which depend only on the degree of the L-function.
In this paper, we investigate the twisted GGP conjecture for certain tempered representations using the theta correspondence and establish some special cases, namely when the L-parameter of the unitary group is the sum of conjugate-dual characters of the appropriate sign.
We give a modification of Yu's construction of supercuspidal representations of a connected reductive group over a non-archimedean local field. This modification restores the validity of certain key intertwining property claims made by Yu, which were recently proven to be false for the original construction. This modification is also an essential ingredient in the explicit construction of supercuspidal L-packets. As further applications, we prove the stability and many instances of endoscopic character identities of these supercuspidal L-packets, subject to some conditions on the base field. I…
We fix a monic polynomial $f(x) \in \mathbb F_q[x]$ over a finite field of characteristic $p$ of degree relatively prime to $p$. Let $a\mapsto ω(a)$ be the Teichmüller lift of $\mathbb F_q$, and let $χ:\mathbb{Z}\to \mathbb C_p^\times$ be a finite character of $\mathbb Z_p$. The $L$-function associated to the polynomial $f$ and the so-called twisted character $ω^u\times χ$ is denoted by $L_f(ω^u,χ,s)$. We prove that, when the conductor of the character is large enough, the $p$-adic Newton slopes of this $L$-function form arithmetic progressions.
We derive a Motohashi-type formula for the cubic moment of central values of $L$-functions of level $q$ cusp forms twisted by quadratic characters of conductor $q$, previously studied by Conrey and Iwaniec and Young. Corollaries of this formula include Weyl-subconvex bounds for $L$-functions of weight two cusp forms twisted by quadratic characters, and estimates towards the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture for Fourier coefficients of weight 3/2 cusp forms.
Let $$S(N) = \sum_{n \sim N}^{\text{smooth}} \, λ_{f}(n) \, χ(n),$$ where $λ_{f}(n)$'s are Fourier coefficients of Hecke-eigen form, and $χ$ is a primitive character of conductor $p^{r}$. In this article we prove a sub-Weyl strength bounds for $S(N)$. Indeed, we obtain $$S(N) \ll \, N^{\frac{5}{9}} \ p^{\frac{13r}{45}},$$ provided that $ p^{13r/20} \leq N \leq p^{4r/5}$. Note that the above bound for $S(N)$ is non-trivial if $N\geq \left(p^{r}\right)^{\frac{2}{3}-\frac{1}{60}}$.
In this paper, we prove that if the Fourier coefficients of a $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{Z})$ Hecke--Maaß cusp form $π$ are not too correlated with additive characters, then there exists infinitely many Dirichlet characters such that \begin{align*} L\left(\frac{1}{2},π\otimesχ\right)L\left(\frac{1}{2},χ\right)\neq 0. \end{align*} To prove this result, we compute the first twisted moment of these $L$ function averaged over a well chosen set of conductors.

Let f be a Hecke-Maass or holomorphic primitive cusp form for $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ with Fourier coefficients $λ_{f}(n)$. Let $χ$ be a primitive Dirichlet character of modulus p, where p is a prime number. In this article we prove the following Weyl-type bound: for any $ε>0$, $$\sum_{|n| \ll N}λ_{f}(n)χ(n) \ll_{f,ε}N^{3/4 }p^{1/6}(pN)^ε.$$ We can see an improvement of the range $N > p^{3/4}$ to the range $N > p^{2/3}$ and we get a bound for $S_{f,χ}(N)$ without going into the $L$-function.
In this note we study Kloosterman sums twisted by a multiplicative characters modulo a prime power. We show, by an elementary calculation, that these sums become equidistributed on the real line with respect to a suitable measure.
