We prove that every sufficiently long simple permutation contains two long almost disjoint simple subsequences. This result has applications to the enumeration of restricted permutations. For example, it immediately implies a result of Bona and (independently) Mansour and Vainshtein that for any r, the number of permutations with at most r copies of 132 has an algebraic generating function.
This dissertation presents a multifaceted look into the structural decomposition of permutation classes. The theory of permutation patterns is a rich and varied field, and is a prime example of how an accessible and intuitive definition leads to increasingly deep and significant line of research. The use of geometric structural reasoning, coupled with analytic and probabilistic techniques, provides a concrete framework from which to develop new enumerative techniques and forms the underlying foundation to this study.
Answering a question of Bona, it is shown that for n>1 the probability that 1 and 2 are in the same cycle of a product of two n-cycles on the set {1,2,...,n} is 1/2 if n is odd and 1/2 - 2/(n-1){n+2) if n is even. Another result concerns the generating function P_h(q) for the number of cycles of the product (1,2,...,n)w, where w ranges over all permutations of 1,2,...,n of cycle type h. A formula is obtained for P_h(q) from which it is proved that the zeros of P_h(q) have real part 0.
We prove that the enumerative polynomials of quasi-Stirling permutations of multisets with respect to the statistics of plateaux, descents and ascents are partial $γ$-positive, thereby confirming a recent conjecture posed by Lin, Ma and Zhang. This is accomplished by proving the partial $γ$-positivity of the enumerative polynomials of certain ordered labeled trees, which are in bijection with quasi-Stirling permutations of multisets. As an application, we provide an alternative proof of the partial $γ$-positivity of the enumerative polynomials on Stirling permutations of multisets.
We extend and generalize many of the enumerative results concerning West's stack-sorting map $s$. First, we prove a useful theorem that allows one to efficiently compute $|s^{-1}(π)|$ for any permutation $π$, answering a question of Bousquet-Mélou. We then enumerate permutations in various sets of the form $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(τ^{(1)},\ldots,τ^{(r)}))$, where $\text{Av}(τ^{(1)},\ldots,τ^{(r)})$ is the set of permutations avoiding the patterns $τ^{(1)},\ldots,τ^{(r)}$. These preimage sets often turn out to be permutation classes themselves, so the current paper represents a new approach, based on …
As an application of linear algebra for enumerative combinatorics, we introduce two new ideas, signed bigrassmannian polynomials and bigrassmannian determinant. First, a signed bigrassmannian polynomial is a variant of the statistic given by the number of bigrassmannian permutations below a permutation in Bruhat order as Reading suggested (2002) and afterward the author developed (2011). Second, bigrassmannian determinant is a $q$-analog of the determinant with respect to our statistic. It plays a key role for a determinantal expression of those polynomials. We further show that bigrassmannian…
Two permutations $s$ and $t$ are $k$-similar if they can be decomposed into subpermutations $s^1, \ldots, s^k$ and $t^1, \ldots, t^k$ such that $s^i$ is order-isomorphic to $t^i$ for all $i$. Recently, Dudek, Grytczuk and Ruciński posed the problem of determining the minimum $k$ for which two permutations chosen independently and uniformly at random are $k$-similar. We show that two such permutations are $O(n^{1/3}\log^{11/6}(n))$-similar with high probability, which is tight up to a polylogarithmic factor. Our result also generalises to simultaneous decompositions of multiple permutations.
We introduce ballot matrices, a signed combinatorial structure whose definition naturally follows from the generating function for labeled interval orders. A sign reversing involution on ballot matrices is defined. We show that matrices fixed under this involution are in bijection with labeled interval orders and that they decompose to a pair consisting of a permutation and an inversion table. To fully classify such pairs, results pertaining to the enumeration of permutations having a given set of ascent bottoms are given. This allows for a new formula for the number of labeled interval orders…
We survey the known results about simple permutations. In particular, we present a number of recent enumerative and structural results pertaining to simple permutations, and show how simple permutations play an important role in the study of permutation classes. We demonstrate how classes containing only finitely many simple permutations satisfy a number of special properties relating to enumeration, partial well-order and the property of being finitely based.
We provide enumerative results concerning right-to-left minima and left- to-right minima in Andre' permutations of the first and second kind. For both the two kinds, the distribution of right-to-left and left-to-right minima is the same. We provide generating functions and associated asymptotics results. Our approach is based on the tree-structure of Andre' permutations.
In this note we consider the question how the set of inversions of a permutation $π\in S_n$ can be partitioned into two subset, such that those are itself inversion sets of permutations. This is archived by exploiting a connection to a graph theoretical result. For this we establish a correspondence between the substitution decomposition of $π$ and the modular decomposition of its inversion graph. We also consider the special case of multiplicative decompositions.
Let $f: \{1, ..., n\} \rightarrow \{1, ..., n\}$ be a function (not necessarily one-to-one). An $f-derangement$ is a permutation $ g:\{1,...,n\} \rightarrow \{1,...,n\}$ such that $g(i) \neq f(i)$ for each $ i = 1, ..., n$. When $f$ is itself a permutation, this is a standard derangement. We examine properties of f-derangements, and show that when we fix the maximum number of preimages for any item under $f$, the fraction of permutations that are f-derangements tends to $ 1/e$ for large $n$, regardless of the choice of $f$. We then use this result to analyze a heuristic method to decompose bip…
Let $θ(n)$ denote the number of permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ that do not contain a 3-term arithmetic progression as a subsequence. Such permutations are known as 3-free permutations. We present a dynamic programming algorithm to count all 3-free permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. We use the output to extend and correct enumerative results in the literature for $θ(n)$ from $n=20$ out to $n=90$ and use the new values to inductively improve existing bounds on $θ(n)$.
We prove that the enumerative polynomials of generalized Stirling permutations by the statistics of plateaux, descents and ascents are partial $γ$-positive. Specialization of our result to the Jacobi-Stirling permutations confirms a recent partial $γ$-positivity conjecture due to Ma, Yeh and the second named author. Our partial $γ$-positivity expansion, as well as a combinatorial interpretation for the corresponding $γ$-coefficients, are obtained via the machine of context-free grammars and a group action on generalized Stirling permutations. Besides, we also provide an alternative approach to…
The class Av(1324), of permutations avoiding the pattern 1324, is one of the simplest sets of combinatorial objects to define that has, thus far, failed to reveal its enumerative secrets. By considering certain large subsets of the class, which consist of permutations with a particularly regular structure, we prove that the growth rate of the class exceeds 9.81. This improves on a previous lower bound of 9.47. Central to our proof is an examination of the asymptotic distributions of certain substructures in the Hasse graphs of the permutations. In this context, we consider occurrences of patte…
In this paper we study alternative tableaux introduced by Viennot. These tableaux are in simple bijection with permutation tableaux, defined previously by Postnikov . We exhibit a simple recursive structure for alternative tableaux. From this decomposition, we can easily deduce a number of enumerative results. We also give bijections between these tableaux and certain classes of labeled trees. Finally, we exhibit a bijection with permutations, and relate it to some other bijections that already appeared in the literature.
If $α\in S_n$ is a permutation of $\{1, 2, \ldots, n\}$, the inversion set of $α$ is $Φ(α) = \{(i, j) \, | \, 1 \leq i < j \leq n, α(i) > α(j)\}$. We describe all $r$-tuples $α_1, α_2, \ldots, α_r \in S_n$ such that $Δ_n^+ = \{(i, j) \, | \, 1 \leq i < j \leq n\}$ is the disjoint union of $Φ(α_1), Φ(α_2), \ldots, Φ(α_r)$. Using this description we prove that certain faces of the Littlewood-Richardson cone are simplicial and provide an algorithm for writing down their sets of generating rays. We also discuss analogous problems for the Weyl groups of root systems of types $B$, $C$ and $D$ provid…
An ascent sequence is one consisting of non-negative integers in which the size of each letter is restricted by the number of ascents preceding it in the sequence. Ascent sequences have recently been shown to be related to (2+2)-free posets and a variety of other combinatorial structures. In this paper, we prove in the affirmative some recent conjectures concerning pattern avoidance for ascent sequences. Given a pattern $τ$, let $\mathcal{S}_τ(n)$ denote the set of ascent sequences of length $n$ avoiding $τ$. Here, we show that the joint distribution of the statistic pair $(\asc,\zero)$ on $\m…
Let $γ_n$ be the permutation on $n$ symbols defined by $γ_n = (1\ 2\...\ n)$. We are interested in an enumerative problem on colored permutations, that is permutations $β$ of $n$ in which the numbers from 1 to $n$ are colored with $p$ colors such that two elements in a same cycle have the same color. We show that the proportion of colored permutations such that $γ_n β^{-1}$ is a long cycle is given by the very simple ratio $\frac{1}{n- p+1}$. Our proof is bijective and uses combinatorial objects such as partitioned hypermaps and thorn trees. This formula is actually equivalent to the proportio…
In this paper, we proposed an interesting problem that might be classified into enumerative combinatorics. Featuring a distinctive two-fold dependence upon the sequences' terms, our problem can be really difficult, which calls for novel approaches to work it out for any given pair $(m,n)$. Complete or partial solutions for $m=2, 3$ with smaller $n$'s are listed. Moreover, we have proved the necessary condition for $p(m,n) \neq 0$ and suggested an elegant asymptotic formula for $p(2,n)$. In addition, several challenging conjectures are provided, together with concise comments.
Monotone grid classes of permutations have proven very effective in helping to determine structural and enumerative properties of classical permutation pattern classes. Associated with grid class $\mathrm{Grid}(M)$ is a graph, $G(M)$, known as its "row-column" graph. We prove that the exponential growth rate of $\mathrm{Grid}(M)$ is equal to the square of the spectral radius of $G(M)$. Consequently, we utilize spectral graph theoretic results to characterise all slowly growing grid classes and to show that for every $γ\geqslant2+\sqrt{5}$ there is a grid class with growth rate arbitrarily clos…
In 1916, MacMahon showed that permutations in $S_n$ with a fixed descent set $I$ are enumerated by a polynomial $d_I(n)$. Diaz-Lopez, Harris, Insko, Omar, and Sagan recently revived interest in this descent polynomial, and suggested the direction of studying such enumerative questions for other consecutive patterns (descents being the consecutive pattern $21$). Zhu studied this question for the consecutive pattern $321$. We continue this line of work by studying the case of any consecutive pattern of the form $k,k-1,\ldots,1$, which we call a $k$-descent. In this paper, we reduce the problem o…
The notion of a descent polynomial, a function in enumerative combinatorics that counts permutations with specific properties, enjoys a revived recent research interest due to its connection with other important notions in combinatorics, viz. peak polynomials and symmetric functions. We define the function $\mathfrak{d}^{m}(I,n)$ as a generalization of the descent polynomial and we prove that for any positive integer $m$, this function is a polynomial in $n$ for sufficiently large $n$ (similarly to the descent polynomial). We obtain an explicit formula for $\mathfrak{d}^{m}(I,n)$ when $m$ is s…
The partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of $n$ sites. It is partially asymmetric in the sense that the probability of hopping left is $q$ times the probability of hopping right. Additionally, particles may enter from the left with probability $α$ and exit from the right with probability $β$. In this paper we prove a close connection between the PASEP and the combinatorics of permutation tableaux. (These tableaux come indirectly from t…
