Existence of $E_0$--Semigroups for Arveson Systems: Making Two Proofs into One

Since quite a time there were available only two rather difficult and involved proofs, the original one by Arveson and a more recent one by Liebscher, of the fact that for every Arveson system there exists an E_0-semigroup. We put together two recent short proofs, one by Skeide and one by Arveson, to obtain a still simpler one, which unfies the advantages of each proof and discards with their disadvantages.

$E_0$-semigroups: around and beyond Arveson's work

We give an account of the theory of $E_0$-semigroups. We first focus on Arveson's contributions to the field and related results. Then we present the recent development of type II and type III $E_0$-semigroups. We also include a short note in Appendix, based on Arveson's observation, on noncommutative Poisson boundaries.

Constructing Proper Markov Semigroups for Arveson Systems

We show that the Markov semigroup obtained by Floricel in [Flo08] compressing the $E_0$-semigroup of Skeide [Ske06], does not consist of endomorphisms. It, therefore, cannot be the tail flow of an $E_0$-semigroup. As a corollary of our result, Floricel's construction will allow to get examples of proper type III Markov semigroups that are not tensor products of simpler ones, provided we find type III Arveson systems that do not factor into tensor products.

A Simple Proof of the Fundamental Theorem about Arveson Systems

With every Eo-semigroup (acting on the algebra of of bounded operators on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space) there is an associated Arveson system. One of the most important results about Arveson systems is that every Arveson system is the one associated with an Eo-semigroup. In these notes we give a new proof of this result that is considerably simpler than the existing ones and allows for a generalization to product systems of Hilbert module (to be published elsewhere).

Arveson's characterisation of CCR flows: the multiparameter case

In this paper, we revisit Arveson's characterisation of CCR flows in terms of decomposibility of the product system in the multiparameter context. We show that a multiparameter $E_0$-semigroup is a CCR flow if and only if it is decomposable and admits a unit. In contrast to the one parameter situtation, we exhibit uncountably many examples of decomposable $E_0$-semigroups which do not admit any unit. Nondegenerate Representations of Continuous Product Systems

We show that every (continuous) faithful product system admits a (continuous) faithful nondegenerate representation. For Hilbert spaces this is equivalent to Arveson's result that every Arveson system comes from an E_0-semigroup. We point out that for Hilbert modules this is not so. As applications we show a C*-algebra version of a result for von Neumann algebras due to Arveson and Kishimoto, and a result about existence of elementary dilations for (semi-)faithful CP-semigroups.

E$_0$-semigroups and product systems of W$^*$-bimodules

Product systems have been originally introduced to classify E$_0$-semigroups on type I factors by Arveson. We develop the classification theory of E$_0$-semigroups on a general von Neumann algebra and the dilation theory of CP$_0$-semigroups in terms of W$^*$-bimodules. For this, we provide a notion of product system of W$^*$-bimodules. This is a W$^*$-bimodule version of Arveson's and Bhat-Skeide's product systems. A Problem of Powers and the Product of Spatial Product Systems

In the 2002 AMS summer conference on ``Advances in Quantum Dynamics'' in Mount Holyoke Robert Powers proposed a sum operation for spatial E0-semigroups. Still during the conference Skeide showed that the Arveson system of that sum is the product of spatial Arveson systems. This product may but need not coincide with the tensor product of Arveson systems. The Powers sum of two spatial E0-semigroups is, therefore, up to cocycle conjugacy Skeide's product of spatial noises.

Commutants of von Neumann Modules, Representations of B^a(E) and Other Topics Related to Product Systems of Hilbert Modules

We review some of our results from the theory of product systems of Hilbert modules. We explain that the product systems obtained from a CP-semigroup in a paper by Bhat and Skeide and in a paper by Muhly and Solel are commutants of each other.
