Different commutative semigroups may have a common saturation. We consider distinguishing semigroups with a common saturation based on their ``sparsity''. We propose to qualitatively describe sparsity of a semigroup by considering which faces of the corresponding rational polyhedral cone have saturation points. For a commutative semigroup we give a necessary and sufficient condition for determining which faces have saturation points. We also show that we can construct a commutative semigroup with arbitrary consistent patterns of faces with saturation points.
Using computational algebraic geometry techniques and Hilbert bases of polyhedral cones we derive explicit formulas and generating functions for the number of magic squares and magic cubes.
Hyperbolic polynomials elegantly encode a rich class of convex cones that includes polyhedral and spectrahedral cones. Hyperbolic polynomials are closed under taking polars and the corresponding cones, the derivative cones, yield relaxations for the associated optimization problem and exhibit interesting facial properties. While it is unknown if every hyperbolicity cone is a section of the positive semidefinite cone, it is natural to ask whether spectrahedral cones are closed under taking polars. In this note we give an affirmative answer for polyhedral cones by exhibiting an explicit spectrah…
We study the problem of when the collection of the recession cones of a polyhedral complex forms also a complex. We exhibit an example showing that this is no always the case. We also show that if the support of the given polyhedral complex satisfies a Minkowski-Weyl type condition, then the answer is positive. As a consequence, we obtain a classification theorem for proper toric schemes over a discrete valuation ring in terms of complete strongly convex rational polyhedral complexes.
Distance-based methods such as UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean) continue to play a significant role in phylogenetic research. We use polyhedral combinatorics to analyze the natural subdivision of the positive orthant induced by classifying the input vectors according to tree topologies returned by the algorithm. The partition lattice informs the study of UPGMA trees. We give a closed form for the extreme rays of UPGMA cones on n taxa, and compute the normalized volumes of the UPGMA cones for small n. Keywords: phylogenetic trees, polyhedral combinatorics, partition lat…
The theory of intrinsic volumes of convex cones has recently found striking applications in areas such as convex optimization and compressive sensing. This article provides a self-contained account of the combinatorial theory of intrinsic volumes for polyhedral cones. Direct derivations of the General Steiner formula, the conic analogues of the Brianchon-Gram-Euler and the Gauss-Bonnet relations, and the Principal Kinematic Formula are given. In addition, a connection between the characteristic polynomial of a hyperplane arrangement and the intrinsic volumes of the regions of the arrangement, …
Convex or concave sequences of $n$ positive terms, viewed as vectors in $n$-space, constitute convex cones with $2n-2$ and $n$ extreme rays, respectively. Explicit description is given of vectors spanning these extreme rays, as well as of non-singular linear transformations between the positive orthant and the simplicial cones formed by the positive concave vectors. The simplicial cones of monotone convex and concave vectors can be described similarly.
In this note, we work out a simple inductive proof showing that every polyhedral cone K is the conic hull of a finite set X of vectors. The base cases of the induction are linear subspaces and linear halfspaces of linear subspaces. The proof also shows that the components of the vectors in X can be chosen (up to their sign) to be quotients of subdeterminants of the coefficient matrix of any inequality system defining K.
The Fourier transforms of polyhedral cones can be used, via Brion's theorem, to compute various geometric quantities of polytopes, such as volumes, moments, and lattice-point counts. We present a novel method of computing these conic Fourier transforms by polynomial interpolation. Given the fact that computing volumes of polytopes is #P-hard (Dyer--Frieze [DF88]), we cannot hope for fast algorithms in the general case. However, with extra assumptions on the combinatorics of the cone, we demonstrate it is possible to compute its Fourier transform efficiently.
We describe a method for constructing characters of combinatorial Hopf algebras by means of integrals over certain polyhedral cones. This is based on ideas from resurgence theory, in particular on the construction of well-behaved averages induced by diffusion processes on the real line. We give several interpretations and proofs of the main result in terms of noncommutative symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, as well as generalizations involving matrix quasi-symmetric functions. The interpretation of noncommutative symmetric functions as alien operators in resurgence theory is also discuss…
This paper is about conic intrinsic volumes and their associated integral geometry. We pay special attention to the biconic localizations of the conic intrinsic volumes, the so-called support measures. An analysis of these quantities has so far been confined to the PhD thesis of Stefan Glasauer (1995). We rederive the results from this thesis with novel streamlined proofs and expand them in several ways. Additionally, we introduce a new class of functionals on polyhedral cones lying between the intrinsic volumes and the well-studied f-vector, which counts the equidimensional faces of a cone, a…
Let G be a perfect graph and let J be its ideal of vertex covers. We show that the Rees algebra of J is normal and that this algebra is Gorenstein if G is unmixed. Then we give a description--in terms of cliques--of the symbolic Rees algebra and the Simis cone of the edge ideal of G.
We develop a method for subdividing polyhedral complexes in a way that restricts the possible recession cones and allows one to work with a fixed class of polyhedron. We use these results to construct locally finite completions of rational polyhedral complexes whose recession cones lie in a fixed fan, locally finite polytopal completions of polytopal complexes, and locally finite zonotopal completions of zonotopal complexes.
We discuss the tropical analogues of several basic questions of convex duality. In particular, the polar of a tropical polyhedral cone represents the set of linear inequalities that its elements satisfy. We characterize the extreme rays of the polar in terms of certain minimal set covers which may be thought of as weighted generalizations of minimal transversals in hypergraphs. We also give a tropical analogue of Farkas lemma, which allows one to check whether a linear inequality is implied by a finite family of linear inequalities. Here, the certificate is a strategy of a mean payoff game. We…
The {\em hypermetric cone} is defined as the cone of semimetrics satisfying the {\em hypermetric inequalities}. Every {\em Delaunay polytope} corresponds to a ray of this polyhedral cone. The Delaunay polytopes, which correspond to extreme rays are called {\em extreme}. We use this polyhedral cone and the {\em closest vector problem} to present a new technique that allow to find, from a given extreme Delaunay polytope, some new ones. Then, we show some examples of applications of this technique in low-dimensions.
Finite quasi semimetrics on $n$ can be thought of as nonnegative valuations on the edges of a complete directed graph on $n$ vertices satisfying all possible triangle inequalities. They comprise a polyhedral cone whose symmetry groups were studied for small $n$ by Deza, Dutour and Panteleeva. We show that the symmetry and combinatorial symmetry groups are as they conjectured. Integral quasi semimetrics have apecial place in the theory of tiled orders, being known as exponent matrices, and can be viewed as monoids under componentwise maximum; we provide a novel derivation of the automorphism gr…
We introduce polyhedral cones associated with $m$-hemimetrics on $n$ points, and, in particular, with $m$-hemimetrics coming from partitions of an $n$-set into $m+1$ blocks. We compute generators and facets of the cones for small values of $m,n$ and study their skeleton graphs.
Tropical polyhedra are known to be representable externally, as intersections of finitely many tropical half-spaces. However, unlike in the classical case, the extreme rays of their polar cones provide external representations containing in general superfluous half-spaces. In this paper, we prove that any tropical polyhedral cone in R^n (also known as "tropical polytope" in the literature) admits an essentially unique minimal external representation. The result is obtained by establishing a (partial) anti-exchange property of half-spaces. Moreover, we show that the apices of the half-spaces ap…
In this expository article we give an introduction to Ehrhart theory, i.e., the theory of integer points in polyhedra, and take a tour through its applications in enumerative combinatorics. Topics include geometric modeling in combinatorics, Ehrhart's method for proving that a couting function is a polynomial, the connection between polyhedral cones, rational functions and quasisymmetric functions, methods for bounding coefficients, combinatorial reciprocity theorems, algorithms for counting integer points in polyhedra and computing rational function representations, as well as visualizations …
We consider polyhedral cones, associated with quasi-semi-metrics (oriented distances), in particular, with oriented multi-cuts, on n points. We computed the number of facets and of extreme rays, their adjacencies, and incidences of the cones QMET_n and OMCUT_n for n=3, 4, 5 (see Table 1) and, partially for n=6. Some results for general n are also given
Conical zeta values associated with rational convex polyhedral cones generalise multiple zeta values. We renormalise conical zeta values at poles by means of a generalisation of Connes and Kreimer's Algebraic Birkhoff Factorisation. This paper serves as a motivation for and an application of this generalised renormalisation scheme. The latter also yields an Euler-Maclaurin formula on rational convex polyhedral lattice cones which relates exponential sums to exponential integrals. When restricted to Chen cones, it reduces to Connes and Kreimer's Algebraic Birkhoff Decomposition for maps with va…
The problem of determining the set of possible eigenvalues of 3 Hermitian matrices that sum up to zero is known as the Horn problem. The answer is a polyhedral cone, which, following Knutson and Tao, can be described as the projection of a simpler cone in the space of triangular tableaux (or hives) to the boundary nodes of the tableau. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial problem defined in terms of certain weighted planar graphs giving rise to exactly the same polyhedral cone. In our framework, the values at the inner nodes of the triangular tableaux receive a natural interpretation. O…
The domain of allowed von Neumann entropies of a holographic field theory carves out a polyhedral cone -- the holographic entropy cone -- in entropy space. Such polyhedral cones are characterized by their extreme rays. For an arbitrary number of parties, it is known that the so-called perfect tensors are extreme rays. In this work, we constrain the form of the remaining extreme rays by showing that they correspond to geometries with vanishing mutual information between any two parties, ensuring the absence of Bell pair type entanglement between them. This is tantamount to proving that besides …
Lecture hall partitions are a fundamental combinatorial structure which have been studied extensively over the past two decades. These objects have produced new results, as well as reinterpretations and generalizations of classicial results, which are of interest in combinatorial number theory, enumerative combinatorics, and convex geometry. In a recent survey of Savage \cite{Savage-LHP-Survey}, a wide variety of these results are nicely presented. However, since the publication of this survey, there have been many new developments related to the polyhedral geometry and Ehrhart theory arising …
We show that a recent identity of Beck-Gessel-Lee-Savage on the generating function of symmetrically contrained compositions of integers generalizes naturally to a family of convex polyhedral cones that are invariant under the action of a finite reflection group. We obtain general expressions for the multivariate generating functions of such cones, and work out the specific cases of a symmetry group of type A (previously known) and types B and D (new). We obtain several applications of the special cases in type B, including identities involving permutation statistics and lecture hall partition…
