Chiriv\`ı and Maffei \cite{CM II} have proved that the multiplication of sections of any two ample spherical line bundles on the wonderful symmetric variety $X=\bar{G/H}$ is surjective. We have proved two criterions that allows ourselves to reduce the same problem on a (smooth) complete symmetric variety to the corresponding problem on the complete toric variety (respectively to the open toric variety). We have also studied in details some family of complete symmetric varieties, in particular those of rank 2.
A singular Moishezon space is not projective even if it is Kaehler. This paper gives a projectivity criterion for Kaehler Moishezon spaces. We shall use this projectivity criterion to show the density of projective symplectic varieties in the Kuranishi family of a (singular) symplectic variety.
We prove a strengthening of Kollár's Ampleness Lemma and use it to prove that any proper coarse moduli space of stable log-varieties of general type is projective. We also prove subadditivity of log-Kodaira dimension for fiber spaces whose general fiber is of log general type.
We prove that a normal variety contains finitely many maximal quasi-projective open subvarieties. As a corollary, we obtain the following generalization of the Chevalley-Kleiman projectivity criterion : a normal variety is quasi-projective if and only if every finite subset is contained in an affine open subvariety. The proof builds on a strategy of Wlodarczyk, using results of Boissiere, Gabber and Serman.
By means of analytic methods the quasi-projectivity of the moduli space of algebraically polarized varieties with a not necessarily reduced complex structure is proven including the case of non-uniruled polarized varieties.
The present paper studies the structure of characteristic varieties of fundamental groups of graph manifolds. As a consequence, a simple proof of Papadima's question is provided on the characterization of algebraic links that have quasi-projective fundamental groups. The type of quasi-projective obstructions used here are in the spirit of Papadima's original work.
We prove that small deformations of a projective variety of general type are also projective varieties of general type, with the same plurigenera. Version 2: small changes in first half. Improved version of the second half is now a separate preprint (Seshadri's criterion and openness of projectivity). Version 3: Footnote corrects citation on p.4.
The moduli space of Higgs bundles can be defined as a quotient of an infinite-dimensional space. Moreover, by the Kuranishi slice method, it is equipped with the structure of a normal complex space. In this paper, we will use analytic methods to show that the moduli space is quasi-projective. In fact, following Hausel's method, we will use the symplectic cut to construct a normal and projective compactification of the moduli space, and hence prove the quasi-projectivity. The main difference between this paper and Hausel's is that the smoothness of the moduli space is not assumed.
We prove some semipositivity theorems for singular varieties coming from graded polarizable admissible variations of mixed Hodge structure. As an application, we obtain that the moduli functor of stable varieties is semipositive in the sense of Kollár. This completes Kollár's projectivity criterion for the moduli spaces of higher-dimensional stable varieties.
We determine which nilpotent orbits in $E_6$ have normal closure and which do not. We also verify a conjecture about small representations in rings of functions on nilpotent orbit covers for type $E_6$.
In this note we give a classification of all affine normal $SL_2$-varieties containing an open dense orbit over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Such a classification was first obtained by Popov. Here we provide an alternative approach.
In this article, we investigate the geometry of reductive group actions on algebraic varieties. Given a connected reductive group $G$, we elaborate on a geometric and combinatorial approach based on Luna-Vust theory to describe every normal $G$-variety with spherical orbits. This description encompasses the classical case of spherical varieties and the theory of $\mathbb{T}$-varieties recently introduced by Altmann, Hausen, and Süss.
Let $N$ be a point of an orbit closure $\bar{O_M}$ in a module variety such that its orbit $O_N$ has codimension two in $\bar{O_M}$. We show that under some additional conditions the pointed variety $(\bar{O_M},N)$ is smoothly equivalent to a cone over a rational normal curve.
For the classical groups, Kraft and Procesi have resolved the question of which nilpotent orbits have closures which are normal and which are not, with the exception of the very even orbits in $D_{2l}$ which have partition of the form $(a^{2k}, b^2)$ for $a, b$ distinct even natural numbers with $a k + b = 2 l$. In this article, we show that these orbits do have normal closure.
Given an action of a complex reductive Lie group G on a normal variety X, we show that every analytically Zariski-open subset of X admitting an analytic Hilbert quotient with projective quotient space is given as the set of semistable points with respect to some G-linearised Weil divisor on X. Applying this result to Hamiltonian actions on algebraic varieties we prove that semistability with respect to a momentum map is equivalent to GIT-semistability in the sense of Mumford and Hausen. It follows that the number of compact momentum map quotients of a given algebraic Hamiltonian G-variety is f…
We study the geometry of equicharacteristic partial affine flag varieties associated to tamely ramified groups $G$ in characteristics $p>0$ dividing the order of the fundamental group $π_1(G_{\text{der}})$. We obtain that most Schubert varieties are not normal and provide an explicit criterion for when this happens. Apart from this, we show, on the one hand, that loop groups of semisimple groups satisfying $p \mid \lvert π_1(G_{\text{der}})\rvert$ are not reduced, and on the other hand, that their integral realizations are ind-flat. Our methods allow us to classify all tamely ramified Pappas-Z…
We prove that in characteristic zero the multiplication of sections of dominant line bundles on a complete symmetric variety $X=\bar{G/H}$ is a surjective map. As a consequence the cone defined by a complete linear system over $X$, or over a closed $G$ stable subvariety of $X$ is normal. This gives an affirmative answer to a question raised by Faltings. A crucial point of the proof is a combinatorial property of root systems.
We prove that the multiplication of sections of globally generated line bundles on a model wonderful variety M of simply connected type is always surjective. This follows by a general argument which works for every wonderful variety and reduces the study of the surjectivity for every couple of globally generated line bundles to a finite number of cases. As a consequence, the cone defined by a complete linear system over M or over a closed G-stable subvariety of M is normal. We apply these results to the study of the normality of the compactifications of model varieties in simple projective spa…
Let g be a semisimple Lie algebra of finite dimension. The nullcone N of g is the set of (x,y) in g x g such that x and y are nilpotents and are in the same Borel sualgebra. The main result of this paper is that N is a closed and irreducible subvariety of g x g, its normalisation has rational singularities and its normalization morphism is bijective.
Regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties form an important family of subvarieties of the flag variety, which are often singular and sometimes not normal varieties. Like Schubert varieties, they contain distinguished points called permutation flags. In this paper, we give a combinatorial characterization for a permutation flag of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety to be a singular point. We also apply this result to characterize regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties which are normal algebraic varieties.
A two-orbit variety is a normal complete complex algebraic variety on which a reductive complex algebraic group acts with exactly two orbits. The aim of this paper is to give the classification of all two-orbit varieties and to prove Luna's conjecture, namely that two-orbit varieties are spherical.
We prove that special ample line bundles on toric varieties arising from root systems are projectively normal. Here the maximal cones of the fans correspond to the Weyl chambers, and special means that the bundle is torus-equivariant such that the character of the line bundle that corresponds to a maximal Weyl chamber is dominant with respect to that chamber. Moreover, we prove that the associated semigroup rings are quadratic.
Asymptotic syzygies of a normal crossing variety follow the same vanishing behavior as one of its smooth components, unless there is a cohomological obstruction arising from how the smooth components intersect each other. In that case, we compute the asymptotic syzygies in terms of the cohomology of the simplicial complex associated to the normal crossing variety. We combine our results on normal crossing varieties with knowledge of degenerations of certain smooth projective varieties to obtain some results on asymptotic syzygies of those smooth projective varieties.
In this article we prove new results on projective normality and normal presentation of adjunction bundle associated to an ample and globally generated line bundle on higher dimensional smooth projective varieties with nef canonical bundle. As one of the consequences of the main theorem, we give bounds on very ampleness and projective normality of pluricanonical linear systems on varieties of general type in dimensions three, four and five. These improve known such results.
We classify the irreducible Hermitian real variations of Hodge structure admitting an infinitesimal normal function, and draw conclusions for cycle-class maps on families of abelian varieties with a given Mumford-Tate group.
We provide a complete description of normal affine algebraic varieties over the real numbers endowed with an effective action of the real circle, that is, the real form of the complex multiplicative group whose real locus consists of the unitary circle in the real plane. Our approach builds on the geometrico-combinatorial description of normal affine varieties with effective actions of split tori in terms of proper polyhedral divisors on semiprojective varieties due to Altmann and Hausen
We reduce the problem of the projective normality of polarized abelian varieties to check the rank of very explicit matrices. This allow us to prove some results on normal generation of primitive line bundles on abelian threefolds and fourfolds. We also give two situations where the projective normality always fails. Finally we make some conjecture.
We show that the linear syzygy spaces of elliptic normal curves, their secant varieties and of bielliptic canonical curves are spanned by geometric syzygies.
We investigate flexibility of affine varieties with an action of a linear algebraic group. Flexibility of a smooth affine variety with only constant invertible functions and a locally transitive action of a reductive group is proved. Also we show that a normal affine complexity-zero horospherical variety is flexible.
We prove that the canonical ring of a canonical variety in the sense of de Fernex and Hacon is finitely generated. We prove that canonical varieties are klt if and only if R(-K_X) is finitely generated. We introduce a notion of nefness for non-Q-Gorenstein varieties and study some of its properties. We then focus on these properties for non-Q-Gorenstein toric varieties.
We list the irreducible reduced and not degenerate normal projective varieties $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$ of dimension $n$ and degree five defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of char$(k) = 0$. In the smooth case, or when $n = 2$, we give also classification results for any algebraically closed field $k$ of char$(k) \geq 0$.
In this paper we study a notion of volume for Cartier divisors on arbitrary blow-ups of normal complex algebraic varieties of dimension greater than one, with a distinguished point. We apply this to study a volume for normal isolated singularities, generalizing work on surfaces done by Wahl. We also compare this volume of isolated singularities to a different generalization due to Boucksom, de Fernex and Favre.
We show that any normal irreducible affine $n$-dimensional $SL_n$-variety $X$ is determined by its automorphism group in the category of normal irreducible affine varieties: if $Y$ is an irreducible affine normal algebraic variety such that $Aut(X) \cong Aut(Y)$ as ind-groups, then $Y \cong X$ as varieties. If we drop the condition of normality on $Y$ , then $X$ is not uniquely determined and we classify all such varieties. In case $n \ge 3$, all the above results hold true if we replace $Aut(X)$ by $U(X)$, where $U(X)$ is the subgroup of $Aut(X)$ generated by all one-dimensional unipotent sub…
We prove that every simplicial complex is the dual complex of some simple normal crossing divisor in a smooth variety. As an application, we simplify and extend the results of Kapovich--Kollár (math.AG:1109.4047) on the existence of singularities with given dual complex.
We give a bound of $k$ for a very ample lattice polytope to be $k$-normal. Equivalently, we give a new combinatorial bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of normal projective toric varieties.
In this paper, we show that the secant variety to a smooth projective variety embedded by a sufficiently positive line bundle is normal. As an application, we deduce that the secant variety to a general canonical curve of genus at least 7 is normal.
We give a new proof for the fact that the number of torus fixed points for the degenerated flag variety is equal to the normalized median Genocchi number, using the identification with a certain Schubert variety. We further study the torus fixed points for the symplectic degenerated flag variety and develop a combinatorial model, symplectic Dellac configurations, so parametrize them. The number of these symplectic fixed points is conjectured to be the median Euler number.
We prove, using invariant Zariski-Riemann spaces, that every normal toric variety over a valuation ring of rank one can be embedded as an open dense subset into a proper toric variety equivariantly. This extends a well known theorem of Sumihiro for toric varieties over a field to this more general setting.
We prove that for a normal projective variety $X$ in characteristic 0, and a base-point free ample line bundle $L$ on it, the restriction map of divisor class groups $\Cl(X)\to \Cl(Y)$ is an isomorphism for a general member $Y\in |L|$ provided that $\dim{X}\geq 4$. This is a generalization of the Grothendieck-Lefschetz Theorem, for divisor class groups of singular varieties.
Let $Y$ be a normal and projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ and $V$ a vector bundle over $Y$. We prove that if there exist a $k$-scheme $X$ and a finite surjective morphism $g:X\to Y$ that trivializes $V$ then $V$ is essentially finite.
Let $X$ be a projective variety and let $C$ be a rational normal curve on $X$. We compute the normal bundle of $C$ in a general complete intersection of hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degree in $X$. As a result, we establish the separable rational connectedness of a large class of varieties, including general Fano complete intersections of hypersurfaces of degree at least three in flag varieties, in arbitrary characteristic. In addition, we give a new way of computing the normal bundle of certain rational curves in products of varieties in terms of their restricted tangent bundles and nor…
The higher Nash blowup of an algebraic variety replaces singular points with limits of certain spaces carrying higher order data associated to the variety at non-singular points. In the case of normal toric varieties we give a combinatorial description of the higher Nash blowup in terms of a Gröbner fan. This description will allow us to prove the analogue of Nobile's theorem on the usual Nash blowup in this context. More precisely, we prove that for a normal toric variety, the higher Nash blowup is an isomorphism if and only if the variety is non-singular.
We study the depth properties of certain direct image sheaves on normal varieties. Let $f: Y\rightarrow X$ be a proper morphism of relative dimension $d$ from a smooth variety onto a normal variety such that the preimage $E$ of the singular locus of $X$ is a divisor. We show that for any integer $m>0$, the higher direct image $R^df_*ω^{\otimes m}_Y(aE)$ modulo the torsion subsheaf is $S_2$, provided that $a$ is sufficiently large. In case $f$ is birational, we give criteria on $a$ for the direct image $f_*ω_Y(aE)$ to coincide with $ω_X$. We also introduce an index measuring the singularities o…
Normal toric varieties over a field or a discrete valuation ring are classified by rational polyhedral fans. We generalize this classification to normal toric varieties over an arbitrary valuation ring of rank one. The proof is based on a generalization of Sumihiro's theorem to this non-noetherian setting. These toric varieties play an important role for tropicalizations.
We prove that the higher Nash blowup of a normal toric variety defined over a field of positive characteristic is an isomorphism if and only if it is non-singular. We also extend a result by R. Toh-Yama which shows that higher Nash blowups do not give a one-step resolution of the $A_3$-singularity. These results were previously known only in characteristic zero.
For a smooth projective variety $X\subset ¶^r$ embedded by the complete linear system, Property $N_p$ has been studied for a long time. On the other hand, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity conjecture and related problems have been focused for a projective variety which is not necessarily linearly normal. This paper aims to explain the influence of Property $N_p$ on higher normality and defining equations of a smooth variety embedded by sub-linear system. Also we prove a claim about Property $N_p$ of surface scrolls which is a generalization of Green's work in \cite{Green} about Property $N_p$ for…
Let $G$ be a connected algebraic $k$-group acting on a normal $k$-variety, where $k$ is a field. We show that $X$ is covered by open $G$-stable quasi-projective subvarieties; moreover, any such subvariety admits an equivariant embedding into the projectivization of a $G$-linearized vector bundle on an abelian variety, quotient of $G$. This generalizes a classical result of Sumihiro for actions of smooth connected affine algebraic groups.
Our primary result is that a demi-normal quasi-projective variety can be embedded in a demi-normal projective variety. Recall that a demi-normal variety $X$ is a variety with properties $S_2$, $G_1$, and seminormality. Equivalently, $X$ has Serre's $S_2$ property and there is an open subvariety $U$ with complement of codimension at least 2 in $X$, such that the only singularities of $U$ are (analytically) double normal crossings. The term demi-normal was coined by Kollár in \cite{Kol13}. As a consequence of this embedding theorem, we prove a semi-smooth Grauert-Riemenschneider vanishing theore…
