This is a revision of arXiv:math/0605304 [math.CT]. It was pointed out to us by Martin Szyld that what was Lemma 1.14 could not be proved at that point. What was Lemma 1.20 depended on it. The old Definition 2.1 is replaced by new material. The old Lemma 1.14 can then be proved now as Lemma 2.6. The old Lemma 1.20 (with typos corrected) is now Lemma 2.7. A few minor typos were also corrected

We define the notion of 2-filtered 2-category and give an explicit construction of the bicolimit of a category valued 2-functor. A category considered as a trivial 2-category is 2-filtered if and only if it is a filtered category, and our construction yields a category equivalent to the category resulting from the usual construction of filtered colimits of categories. Weaker axioms suffice for this construction, and we call the corresponding notion pre 2-filtered 2-category. The full set of axioms is necessary to prove that 2-filtered bicolimits have the properties corresponding to the essential properties of filtered bicolimits. Kennison already considered filterness conditions on a 2-category under the name of bifiltered 2-category. It is easy to check that a bifiltered 2-category is 2-filtered, so our results apply to bifiltered 2-categories. Actually Kennison's notion is equivalent to ours, but the other direction of this equivalence is not entirely trivial.
We discuss a number of general constructions concerning additive $ C^* $-categories, focussing in particular on establishing the existence of bicolimits. As an illustration of our results we show that balanced tensor products of module categories over $ C^* $-tensor categories exist without any finiteness assumptions.
We show the existence of bilimits of 2-cofiltered diagrams of topoi, generalizing the construction of cofiltered bilimits developed in "SGA 4 Springer LNM 270 (1972)". For any given such diagram, we show that it can be represented by a 2-cofiltered diagram of small sites with finite limits, and we construct a small site for the inverse limit topos. This is done by taking the 2-filtered bicolimit of the underlying categories and inverse image functors. We use the construction of this bicolimit developed in "A construction of 2-filtered bicolimits of categories, Cah. Top. et Geo. Diff. Vol. XLVI…
This paper has two objectives. The first is to develop the theory of bicategories enriched in a monoidal bicategory -- categorifying the classical theory of categories enriched in a monoidal category -- up to a description of the free cocompletion of an enriched bicategory under a class of weighted bicolimits. The second objective is to describe a universal property of the process assigning to a monoidal category V the equipment of V-enriched categories, functors, transformations, and modules; we do so by considering, more generally, the assignation sending an equipment C to the equipment of C…
We prove that a triangulated category which is the underlying category of a stable derivator has a filtered enhancement, providing an affirmative answer to a conjecture in [3].
The paper studies analytic functors between presheaf categories. Generalising results of A. Joyal and of R. Hasegawa for analytic endofunctors on the category of sets, we give two characterisations of analytic functors between presheaf categories over groupoids: (i) as functors preserving filtered colimits, quasi-pullbacks, and cofiltered limits; and (ii) as functors preserving filtered colimits and wide quasi-pullbacks. The development establishes that small groupoids, analytic functors between their presheaf categories, and quasi-cartesian natural transformations between them form a 2-catego…
The filtered derived category of an abelian category has played a useful role in subjects including geometric representation theory, mixed Hodge modules, and the theory of motives. We develop a natural generalization using current methods of homotopical algebra, in the formalisms of stable infinity-categories, stable model categories, and pretriangulated, idempotent-complete dg categories. We characterize the filtered stable infinity-category Fil(C) of a stable infinity-category C as the left exact localization of sequences in C along the infinity-categorical version of completion (and prove a…
Given a 2-category $\mathcal{A}$, a $2$-functor $\mathcal{A} \overset {F} {\longrightarrow} \mathcal{C}at$ and a distinguished 1-subcategory $Σ\subset \mathcal{A}$ containing all the objects, a $σ$-cone for $F$ (with respect to $Σ$) is a lax cone such that the structural $2$-cells corresponding to the arrows of $Σ$ are invertible. The conical $σ$-limit is the universal (up to isomorphism) $σ$-cone. The notion of $σ$-limit generalises the well known notions of pseudo and lax limit. We consider the fundamental notion of $σ$-filtered} pair $(\mathcal{A}, \, Σ)$ which generalises the notion of 2-f…
In this paper we go into the study of 2-limits and 2-colimits in the 2-category CAT the category of small categories. More precisely we show the commutation of filtered 2-colimits and finite 2-limits. It is a generalization of a classical result in category theory.
The importance of accessible categories has been widely recognized; they can be described as those freely generated in some precise sense by a small set of objects and, because of that, satisfy many good properties. More specifically finitely accessible categories can be characterized as: (a) free cocompletions of small categories under filtered colimits, and (b) categories of flat presheaves on some small category. The equivalence between (a) and (b) is what makes the theory so general and fruitful. Notions of enriched accessibility have also been considered in the literature for various base…
Let $R$ be an artin ring and $Θ=\{Θ(1),Θ(2),\cdots,Θ(n)\}$ be a family of objects in an artin extriangulated $R$-category $(\cal C,\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$ such that $\mathbb{E}(Θ(j),Θ(i))=0$ for all $j\geq i$. In this paper, we show that the class $\cal P(Θ)$ of the $Θ$-projective objects is a precovering class and the class $\cal I(Θ)$ of the $Θ$-injective objects is a preenveloping one in $\cal C$. Furthermore, if $\cal C$ has enough projectives and enough injectives, we show that the subcategory $\cal F(Θ)$ of $Θ$-filtered objects is functorially finite in $\cal C$. As an appliacation, th…
We study the interaction between the notions of filteredness, fractions and fibrations in the theory of bicategories, generalizing classical results for categories. We give an explicit formula for filtered pseudo-colimits of categories indexed by a bicategory, and we use it to compute the hom-categories of a bicategory of fractions. As a consequence, we show that the canonical pseudo-functor into a bicategory of fractions is exact.
This paper presents a new approach to the dimension theory and Orlov spectra of triangulated categories by considering natural filtrations that arise in the pretriangulated setting.
The present paper is devoted to study the homotopy category associated with a simplicial descent category (D,s,E) (arXiv:0808.3684v2). We prove that the class E of equivalences has a calculus of left fractions over a quotient category of D modulo homotopy. We study the fiber/cofiber sequences induced by a (co)simplicial descent structure. Examples of such fiber/cofiber sequences are deduced for (commutative) differential graded algebras, simplicial sets or topological spaces. We prove that the homotopy category of a stable simplicial descent category is triangulated. In addition, these triangu…
This article provides some basic results on weight structures, weight complex functors and homotopy categories. We prove that the full subcategories K(A)^{w < n}, K(A)^{w > n}, K(A)^- and K(A)^+ (of objects isomorphic to suitably bounded complexes) of the homotopy category K(A) of an additive category A are idempotent complete, which confirms that (K(A)^{w <= 0}, K(A)^{w >= 0}) is a weight structure on K(A). We discuss weight complex functors and provide full details of an argument sketched by M. Bondarko, which shows that if w is a bounded weight structure on a triangulated category T that ha…
A classical result of Tannaka duality is the fact that a coalgebra over a field can be reconstructed from its category of finite dimensional representations by using the forgetful functor which sends a representation to its underlying vector space. There is also a corresponding recognition result, which characterizes those categories equipped with a functor to finite dimensional vector spaces which are equivalent to the category of finite dimensional representations of a coalgebra. In this paper we study a generalization of these questions to an arbitrary cosmos, that is, a complete and cocomp…
We show that categories of modules over a ring in Homotopy Type Theory (HoTT) satisfy the internal versions of the AB axioms from homological algebra. The main subtlety lies in proving AB4, which is that coproducts indexed by arbitrary sets are left-exact. To prove this, we replace a set with its strict category of (ordered) finite sub-multisets. From showing that the latter is filtered, we deduce left-exactness of the coproduct. More generally, we show that exactness of filtered colimits (AB5) implies AB4 for any abelian category in HoTT. Our approach is heavily inspired by Roswitha Harting's…
Under certain conditions, a scheme can be reconstructed from its category of quasi-coherent sheaves. The Tannakian reconstruction theorem provides another example where a geometric object can be reconstructed from an associated category, in this case the category of its finite dimensional representations. Lurie's result that the pseudofunctor which sends a geometric stack to its category of quasi-coherent sheaves is fully faithful provides a conceptual explanation for why this works. In this paper we prove a generalized Tannakian recognition theorem, in order to characterize a part of the imag…
We introduce the notion of homological systems $Θ$ for triangulated categories. Homological systems generalize, on one hand, the notion of stratifying systems in module categories, and on the other hand, the notion of exceptional sequences in triangulated categories. We prove that, attached to the homological system $Θ,$ there are two standardly stratified algebras $A$ and $B,$ which are derived equivalent. Furthermore, it is proved that the category $\F(Θ),$ of the $Θ$-filtered objects in a triangulated category $\T,$ admits in a very natural way an structure of an exact category, and then th…
The purpose of this short and elementary note is to identify some classes of exact categories introduced in L. Previdi's thesis. Among other things we show: (1) An exact category is partially abelian exact if and only if it is abelian. (2) An exact category satisfies the axioms AIC and AIC° if and only if it is quasi-abelian in the sense of J.-P. Schneiders. (3) An exact category satisfies AIC if and only if it is an additive category of the type considered by G. Laumon in his work on derived categories of filtered ${\cal D}$-modules. In all of the above classes all morphisms have kernels and …
In the sixties, Grothendieck developed the theory of pro-objects over a category. The fundamental property of the category $Pro(C)$ is that there is an embedding $C \stackrel{c}{\rightarrow} Pro(C)$, $Pro(C)$ is closed under small cofiltered limits, and these are free in the sense that for any category $E$ closed under small cofiltered limits, pre-composition with $c$ determines an equivalence of categories $Cat(Pro(C),E)_+ \simeq Cat(C,E)$, (the $+$ indicates the full subcategory of the functors that preserve cofiltered limits). In this work we develop a 2-dimensional pro-object theory. Given…
Examples of exact categories in representation theory are given by the category of Delta-filtered modules over quasi-hereditary algebras, but also by various categories related to matrix problems, such as poset representations or representations of bocses. Motivated by the matrix problem background, we study in this article the reduction of exact structures, and consider the poset Ex(A) of all exact structures on a fixed additive category A. This poset turns out to be a complete lattice, and under suitable conditions results of Enomoto's imply that it is boolean. We initiate in this article a …
We study polynomial functors of degree 2, called quadratic, with values in the category of abelian groups $Ab$, and whose source category is an arbitrary category $\C$ with null object such that all objects are colimits of copies of a generating object $E$ which is small and regular projective; this includes all pointed algebraic varieties. More specifically, we are interested in such quadratic functors $F$ from $\C$ to $Ab$ which preserve filtered colimits and suitable coequalizers; one may take reflexive ones if $\C$ is Mal'cev and Barr exact. A functorial equivalence is established between …
