The generalised Paley graphs are, as their name suggests, a generalisation of the Paley graphs, first defined by Paley in 1933 (see \cite{Paley}). They arise as the relation graphs of symmetric cyclotomic association schemes. However, their automorphism groups may be much larger than the groups of the corresponding schemes. We determine the parameters for which the graphs are connected, or equivalently, the schemes are primitive. Also we prove that generalised Paley graphs are sometimes isomorphic to Hamming graphs and consequently have large automorphism groups, and we determine precisely the parameters for this to occur. We prove that in the connected, non-Hamming case, the automorphism group of a generalised Paley graph is a primitive group of affine type, and we find sufficient conditions under which the group is equal to the one-dimensional affine group of the associated cyclotomic association scheme. The results have been applied in \cite{LLP} to distinguish between cyclotomic schemes and similar twisted versions of these schemes, in the context of homogeneous factorisations of complete graphs.
A graph is Cartesian decomposable if it is isomorphic to a Cartesian product of (more than one) strictly smaller graphs, each of which has more than one vertex and admits no such decomposition. These smaller graphs are called the Cartesian-prime factors of the Cartesian decomposition, and were shown, by Sabidussi and Vizing independently, to be uniquely determined up to isomorphism. We characterise by their parameters those generalised Paley graphs which are Cartesian decomposable, and we prove that for such graphs, the Cartesian-prime factors are themselves smaller generalised Paley graphs. T…
A generalised Paley map is a Cayley map for the additive group of a finite field F, with a subgroup S=-S of the multiplicative group as generating set, cyclically ordered by powers of a generator of S. We characterise these as the orientably regular maps with orientation-preserving automorphism group acting primitively and faithfully on the vertices; allowing a non-faithful primitive action yields certain cyclic coverings of these maps. We determine the fields of definition and the orbits of the absolute Galois group on these maps, and we show that if (q-1)/(p-1) divides |S|, where |F|=q=p^e w…
A graph is called a GRR if its automorphism group acts regularly on its vertex-set. Such a graph is necessarily a Cayley graph. Godsil has shown that there are only two infinite families of finite groups that do not admit GRRs : abelian groups and generalised dicyclic groups. Indeed, any Cayley graph on such a group admits specific additional graph automorphisms that depend only on the group. Recently, Dobson and the last two authors showed that almost all Cayley graphs on abelian groups admit no automorphisms other than these obvious necessary ones. In this paper, we prove the analogous resul…
Infinite analogues of the Paley graphs are constructed, based on uncountably many infinite but locally finite fields. Weil's estimate for character sums shows that they are all isomorphic to the random or universal graph of Erd\H os, Rényi and Rado. Automorphism groups and connections with model theory are considered.
We investigate the combinatorial interplay between automorphisms and opposition in (primarily finite) generalised polygons. We provide restrictions on the fixed element structures of automorphisms of a generalised polygon mapping no chamber to an opposite chamber. Furthermore, we give a complete classification of automorphisms of finite generalised polygons which map at least one point and at least one line to an opposite, but map no chamber to an opposite chamber. Finally, we show that no automorphism of a finite thick generalised polygon maps all chambers to opposite chambers, except possibl…
We study the point regular groups of automorphisms of some of the known generalised quadrangles. In particular we determine all point regular groups of automorphisms of the thick classical generalised quadrangles. We also construct point regular groups of automorphisms of the generalised quadrangle of order $(q-1,q+1)$ obtained by Payne derivation from the classical symplectic quadrangle $\mathsf{W}(3,q)$. For $q=p^f$ with $f\geq 2$ we obtain at least two nonisomorphic groups when $p\geq 5$ and at least three nonisomorphic groups when $p=2$ or $3$. Our groups include nonabelian 2-groups, group…
We show that if G is a group of automorphisms of a thick finite generalised quadrangle Q acting primitively on both the points and lines of Q, then G is almost simple. Moreover, if G is also flag-transitive then G is of Lie type.
Tent and Ziegler proved that the automorphism group of the Urysohn sphere is simple and that the automorphism group of the Urysohn space is simple modulo bounded automorphisms. A key component of their proof is the definition of a stationary independence relation (SIR). In this paper we prove that the existence of a SIR satisfying some extra axioms is enough to prove simplicity of the automorphism group of a countable structure. The extra axioms are chosen with applications in mind, namely homogeneous structures which admit a "metric-like amalgamation", for example all primitive 3-constrained …
A generalised quadrangle is a point-line incidence geometry G such that: (i) any two points lie on at most one line, and (ii) given a line L and a point p not incident with L, there is a unique point on L collinear with p. They are a specific case of the generalised polygons introduced by Tits, and these structures and their automorphism groups are of some importance in finite geometry. An integral part of understanding the automorphism groups of finite generalised quadrangles is knowing which groups can act primitively on their points, and in particular, which almost simple groups arise as au…
It is proved that a code $L(q)$ which is monomially equivalent to the Pless symmetry code $C(q)$ of length $2q+2$ contains the (0,1)-incidence matrix of a Hadamard 3-$(2q+2,q+1,(q-1)/2)$ design $D(q)$ associated with a Paley-Hadamard matrix of type II. Similarly, any ternary extended quadratic residue code contains the incidence matrix of a Hadamard 3-design associated with a Paley-Hadamard matrix of type I. If $q=5, 11, 17, 23$, then the full permutation automorphism group of $L(q)$ coincides with the full automorphism group of $D(q)$, and a similar result holds for the ternary extended quadr…
We classify the regular maps $\mathcal M$ which have automorphism groups $G$ acting faithfully and primitively on their vertices. As a permutation group $G$ must be of almost simple or affine type, with dihedral point stabilisers. We show that all such almost simple groups, namely all but a few groups ${\rm PSL}_2(q)$, ${\rm PGL}_2(q)$ and ${\rm Sz}(q)$, arise from regular maps, which are always non-orientable. In the affine case, the maps $\mathcal M$ occur in orientable and non-orientable Petrie dual pairs. We give the number of maps associated with each group, together with their genus and …

A graph with a semiregular group of automorphisms can be thought of as the derived cover arising from a voltage graph. Since its inception, the theory of voltage graphs and their derived covers has been a powerful tool used in the study of graphs with a significant degree of symmetry. We generalise this theory to graphs with a group of automorphisms that is not necessarily semiregular, and we generalise several well-known results of the classical theory of voltage graphs to this broader setting.
The theory of voltage graphs has become a standard tool in the study graphs admitting a semiregular group of automorphisms. We introduce the notion of a cyclic generalised voltage graph to extend the scope of this theory to graphs admitting a cyclic group of automorphism that may not be semiregular. We use this new tool to classify all cubic graphs admitting a cyclic group of automorphisms with at most three vertex-orbits and we characterise vertextransitivity for each of these classes. In particular, we show that a cubic vertex-transitive graph admitting a cyclic group of automorphisms with a…
In this article we construct a new family of linear maximum rank distance (MRD) codes for all parameters. This family contains the only known family for general parameters, the Gabidulin codes, and contains codes inequivalent to the Gabidulin codes. This family also contains the well-known family of semifields known as Generalised Twisted Fields. We also calculate the automorphism group of these codes, including the automorphism group of the Gabidulin codes.
In combinatorial topology we aim to triangulate manifolds such that their topological properties are reflected in the combinatorial structure of their description. Here, we give a combinatorial criterion on when exactly triangulations of 3-manifolds with transitive cyclic symmetry can be generalised to an infinite family of such triangulations with similarly strong combinatorial properties. In particular, we construct triangulations of Seifert fibred spaces with transitive cyclic symmetry where the symmetry preserves the fibres and acts non-trivially on the homology of the spaces. The triangul…
Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space. Consider the ortho-Grassmann graph $Γ^{\perp}_{k}(H)$ whose vertices are $k$-dimensional subspaces of $H$ (projections of rank $k$) and two subspaces are connected by an edge in this graph if they are compatible and adjacent (the corresponding rank-$k$ projections commute and their difference is an operator of rank $2$). Our main result is the following: if $\dim H\ne 2k$, then every automorphism of $Γ^{\perp}_{k}(H)$ is induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator; if $\dim H=2k\ge 6$, then every automorphism of $Γ^{\perp}_{k}(H)$ is induced by a unitary o…
The largest order $n(d,k)$ of a graph of maximum degree $d$ and diameter $k$ cannot exceed the Moore bound, which has the form $M(d,k)=d^k - O(d^{k-1})$ for $d\to\infty$ and any fixed $k$. Known results in finite geometries on generalised $(k+1)$-gons imply, for $k=2,3,5$, the existence of an infinite sequence of values of $d$ such that $n(d,k)=d^k - o(d^k)$. This shows that for $k=2,3,5$ the Moore bound can be asymptotically approached in the sense that $n(d,k)/M(d,k)\to 1$ as $d\to\infty$; moreover, no such result is known for any other value of $k\ge 2$. The corresponding graphs are, howeve…
If $G$ is a group of permutations of a set $Ω$, then the suborbits of $G$ are the orbits of point-stabilisers $G_α$ acting on $Ω$. The cardinalities of these suborbits are the subdegrees of $G$. Every infinite primitive permutation group $G$ with finite subdegrees acts faithfully as a group of automorphisms of a locally-finite connected vertex-primitive directed graph $Γ$ with vertex set $Ω$, and there is consequently a natural action of $G$ on the ends of $Γ$. We show that if $G$ is closed in the permutation topology of pointwise convergence, then the structure of $G$ is determined by the len…
