We find an invariant characterization of planar webs of maximum rank. For 4-webs, we prove that a planar 4-web is of maximum rank three if and only if it is linearizable and its curvature vanishes. This result leads to the direct web-theoretical proof of the Poincaré's theorem: a planar 4-web of maximum rank is linearizable. We also find an invariant intrinsic characterization of planar 4-webs of rank two and one and prove that in general such webs are not linearizable. This solves the Blaschke problem ``to find invariant conditions for a planar 4-web to be of rank 1 or 2 or 3''. Finally, we find invariant characterization of planar 5-webs of maximum rank and prove than in general such webs are not linearizable.
We propose a definition of genericity for singular flat planar 3-webs formed by integral curves of implicit ODEs and give a classification of generic singularities of such webs.
We investigate the space of abelian relations of planar webs admitting infinitesimal automorphisms. As an application, we construct 4k-14 new algebraic families of global exceptionnal k-webs on the projective plane, for each k >4.
We prove that any planar 4-web defines a unique projective structure in the plane in such a way that the leaves of the foliations are geodesics of this projective structure. We also find conditions for the projective structure mentioned above to contain an affine symmetric connection, and conditions for a planar 4-web to be equivalent to a geodesic 4-web on an affine symmetric surface. Similar results are obtained for planar d-webs, d > 4, provided that additional d-4 second-order invariants vanish.
We study non-flat planar 3-webs with infinitesimal symmetries. Using multi-dimensional Schwarzian derivative we give a criterion for linearization of such webs and present a projective classification thereof. Using this classification we show that the Gronwall conjecture is true for 3-webs admitting infinitesimal symmetries.
In the complex setting, let $F(x,y,y')=0$ be an analytic or algebraic differential equation with $y'$-degree $d$. We deal with the qualitative study of such equations through the geometry of the planar $d$-web generated by the generic family of integral curves. Infinitesimal symmetries of these configurations are discussed by using meromorphic connections methods "à la Cartan-Spencer".
We give various results and applications using the connection $(E,\nabla)$ associated with a $d$-web. Precisely, we exhibit fundamental invariants of the web related to the differential equation of first order which presents the web. They cast some new lights on the connection and its construction, both conceptually and effectively. We describe 4 and 5-webs from this point of view and show for instance that the connection gives account for the linearizability conditions of the web. Moreover, we get characterization of maximal rank webs such as exceptional 5-webs, and 4-webs \emph{via} a new pr…
We find relative differential invariants of orders eight and nine for a planar nonparallelizable 3-web such that their vanishing is necessary and sufficient for a 3-web to be linearizable. This solves the Blaschke conjecture for 3-webs. As a side result, we show that the number of linearizations in the Gronwall conjecture does not exceed fifteen and give criteria for rigidity of 3-webs.
We present a projectively invariant description of planar linear 3-webs. For a non-hexagonal 3-web, we introduce family of projective torsion-free Cartan connections, the web leaves being geodesics for each member of the family, and give a web linearization criterion. Finally, we propose an algorithm for resolving the Gronwall conjecture and illustrate this approach by proving the conjecture for 3-webs whose 2 foliations are 2 pencils of lines.
Confocal conics form an orthogonal net. Supplementing this net with one of the following: 1) the net of Cartesian coordinate lines aligned along the principal axes of conics, 2) the net of Apollonian pencils of circles whose foci coincide with the foci of conics, 3) the net of tangents to a conic of the confocal family, we get a planar 4-web. We show that each of these 4-webs is of maximal rank and characterize confocal conics from the web theory viewpoint.
In the article "On the linearizability of 3-webs" (Nonlinear analysis 47, (2001) pp.2643-2654), published in 2001, we studied the linearizability problem for 3-webs on a 2-dimensional manifold. Four years after the publication of our article, V.V.Goldberg and V.V.Lychagin in the paper "On linearization of planar three-webs and Blaschke's conjecture" (C.R.Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I. vol. 341. num 3 (2005)) obtained similar results by a different method and criticized our article by qualifying the proofs incomplete. However, they obtained false result on the linearizability of a certain web. We pr…
In this paper we study the linearizability problem for 3-webs on a 2-dimensional manifold. With an explicit computation based on the theory developed in the paper "On the linearizability of 3-webs" (Nonlinear analysis 47, (2001) pp. 2643-2654), we examine a 3-web whose linearizability was claimed in the same paper. We show that, contrary to the statement of the papers "On the Blaschke conjecture for 3-webs" (arXiv: math.DG/0411460) and "On linearization of planar three-webs and Blaschke's conjecture", (C.R.Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I. vol. 341. num 3 (2005)), this particular web is linearizable. …
In this text, we investigate webs which can be associated to cluster algebras from the point of view of the abelian functional equations these webs carry, focusing on the polylogarithmic ones. We introduce a general notion of webs whose rank is `As Maximal as Possible' (AMP) and show that many webs associated either to polylogarithmic functional equations or to cluster algebras are of this type. In particular, we prove a few results and state some conjectures about cluster webs associated to (pairs of) Dynkin diagrams. Along the way, we show that many of the classical functional equations sati…
A criterion for the holomorphy of the curvature of smooth planar webs and applications to dual webs of homogeneous foliations on $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$
We give a one parameter family of exceptional planar 5-webs. Each web is formed by four pencils of lines and by a foliation defined by the level curves of a function sn_k(x)sn_k(y) where sn_k denotes a Jacobi's elliptic function.
In this paper, we study local solutions F=(F1,..,Fn) of a general functional equation of the form F1(U1(x,y))+....+Fn(Un(x,y))=0. A such equation will be called an ``abelian functional equation'' (Afe). We will restrict ourselves to the case when the inner functions Ui's are real rational functions. First we prove that if the components Fi of F are measurable then they are analytic and are characterized as solutions of a certain linear differential equation constructed from the Ui's. Then we apply our results to the resolution of Afe's which are generalised versions of the classical functional…
According to Alain Hénaut, a planar 4-web is called Nakai's web if the cross-ratio of the tangents to the four foliations at each point is constant and if it has no hexagonal 3-subweb. We prove that Nakai's webs have rank 0 or 1. We give examples with rank 1 and present a universal way to build such examples.
Gronwall conjecture states that a planar 3-web which admits more than one distinct linearization is locally equivalent to an algebraic web. We give a partial answer to the conjecture in the affirmative for the class of planar 3-webs with the web curvature that vanishes to order three at a point. The differential relation on the third order jet of web curvature provides an explicit criterion for unique linearization.
We discuss the curvilinear web $\boldsymbol{\mathcal W}_{0,n+3}$ on the moduli space $\mathcal M_{0,n+3}$ of projective configurations of $n+3$ points on $\mathbf P^1$ defined by the $n+3$ forgetful maps $\mathcal M_{0,n+3}\rightarrow \mathcal M_{0,n+2}$. We recall classical results which show that this web is linearizable when $n$ is odd, or is equivalent to a web by conics when $n$ is even. We then turn to the abelian relations (ARs) of these webs. After recalling the well-known case when $n=2$ (related to the 5-terms functional identity of the dilogarithm), we focus on the case of the 6-web…
We propose the Legendrian web in a contact three manifold as a second order generalization of the planar web. An Abelian relation for a Legendrian web is analogously defined as an additive equation among the first integrals of its foliations. For a class of Legendrian $\, d$-webs defined by simple second order ODE's, we give an algebraic construction of $$ ρ_d = \frac{(d-1)(d-2)(2d+3)}{6}$$ linearly independent Abelian relations. We then employ the method of local differential analysis and the theory of linear differential systems to show that $\, ρ_d$ is the maximum rank of a Legendrian $\, d…
We generalize to webs of any codimension results already known in codimension one. Given a holomorphic $d$-web $\cal W$ of codimension $q$ $(q\leq n-1)$ in an ambiant $n$-dimensional holomorphic manifold $U$, we define for any integer $p$ $(1\leq p\leq q)$ the condition for such a web to be \emph{$p$-ordinary} $($resp. \emph{strongly $p$-ordinary}$)$. If this condition is satisfied, we then prove that its $p$-rank $r_p({\cal W})$ $\bigl($resp. its closed $p$-rank $\widetilde r_p({\cal W})\bigr)$, i.e. the maximal dimension of the vector space of the germs of $p$-abelian relations $($resp. of c…
