Combinatorial Aspects of Classical Resolution of Singularities

We describe combinatorial aspects of classical resolution of singularities that are free of characteristic and can be applied to singular foliations and vector fields as well as to functions and varieties. In particular, we give a combinatorial version of Hironaka's maximal contact theory in terms of characteristic polyhedra systems and we show the global existence of maximal contact in this context.

Severi degrees on toric surfaces

Ardila and Block used tropical results of Brugalle and Mikhalkin to count nodal curves on a certain family of toric surfaces. Building on a linearity result of the first author, we revisit their work in the context of the Goettsche-Yau-Zaslow formula for counting nodal curves on arbitrary smooth surfaces, addressing several questions they raised by proving stronger versions of their main theorems. Combinatorial aspects of mirror symmetry

The purpose of this paper is to review some combinatorial ideas behind the mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. We suggest as a basic combinatorial object the notion of a Gorenstein polytope of index r. A natural combinatorial duality for d-dimensional Gorenstein polytopes of index r extends the well-known polar duality for reflexive polytopes (case r=1). Combinatorial aspects of exceptional sequences on (rational) surfaces

We investigate combinatorial aspects of exceptional sequences in the derived category of coherent sheaves on certain smooth and complete algebraic surfaces. We show that to any such sequence there is canonically associated a complete toric surface whose torus fixpoints are either smooth or cyclic T-singularities (in the sense of Wahl) of type $\frac{1}{r^2}(1, kr - 1)$. We also show that any exceptional sequence can be transformed by mutation into an exceptional sequence which consists only of objects of rank one.

Recursive combinatorial aspects of compactified moduli spaces

A connection between moduli spaces of algebro-geometric objects and moduli spaces of polyhedral objects has been under investigation in recent years. Loosely speaking, the skeleton of an algebro-geometric moduli space is expressed as the modul space of the skeleta of the objects it parametrizes. The connection is based on the combinatorial properties of the boundary of the algebro-geometric moduli spaces. This paper overviews this topic with focus on moduli of curves, admissible covers, Jacobians and their Neron models.

Naturality of Abel maps

We give a combinatorial characterization of nodal curves admitting a natural d-th Abel map to their Picard scheme, for any positive integer d. "Natural" here means compatible with and independent of specialization.

Rigid isotopy classification of generic rational quintics in $\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^{2}$

For line arrangements in P^2 with nice combinatorics (in particular, for those which are nodal away the line at infinity), we prove that the combinatorics contains the same information as the fundamental group together with the meridianal basis of the abelianization. We consider the determination of the number $c_k(α)$ of ordered factorisations of an arbitrary permutation on n symbols, with cycle distribution $α$, into k-cycles such that the factorisations have minimal length and such that the group generated by the factors acts transitively on the n symbols. The case k=2 corresponds to the celebrated result of Hurwitz on the number of topologically distinct holomorphic functions on the 2-sphere that preserve a given number of elementary branch point singularities. Geometry of genus one fine compactified universal Jacobians

We introduce a general abstract notion of fine compactified Jacobian for nodal curves of arbitrary genus. We focus on genus 1 and prove combinatorial classification results for fine compactified Jacobians in the case of a single nodal curve and in the case of the universal family over the moduli space of stable pointed curves. We show that if the fine compactified Jacobian of a nodal curve of genus 1 can be extended to a smoothing of the curve, then it can be described as the moduli space of stable sheaves with respect to some polarisation. Degree-2 Abel maps and hyperelleptic curves

In this paper we resolve the degree-2 Abel map for nodal curves. Our results are based on a previous work of the authors reducing the problem of the resolution of the Abel map to a combinatorial problem via tropical geometry. As an application, we characterize when the (symmetrized) degree-2 Abel map is not injective, a property that, for a smooth curve, is equivalent to the curve being hyperelliptic.
