We investigate what we call a conformal $β$ - change in Finsler spaces, namely $$ L(x,y)\to ~^{\ast}L(x,y)=e^{σ(x)}L(x,y)+β(x,y)$$ where~$σ~$ is a function of $x~ only ~and ~ β(x, y)$ is a given 1- form. This change generalizes various types of changes: conformal changes, Randers changes and $β$ - changes. Under this change, we obtain the relationships between some tensors associated with $(M,L)$ and the corresponding tensors associated with $(M,{^\ast}L)$. We investigate some $σ$- invariant tensors . This investigation allows us to give an answer to the question: Are the properties of C-reducibility, $S_3$-likeness and $S_4$-likeness invariant under a conformal $β$ - change?
The present paper is a continuation of a foregoing paper [Tensor, N. S., 69 (2008), 155-178]. The main aim is to establish \emph{an intrinsic investigation} of the conformal change of the most important special Finsler spaces, namely, $C^{h}$-recurrent, $C^{v}$-recurrent, $C^{0}$-recurrent, $C_{2}$-like, quasi-$C$-reducible, $C$-reducible, Berwald space, $S^{v}$-recurrent, $P^*$-Finsler manifold, $R_{3}$-like, $P$-symmetric, Finsler manifold of $p$-scalar curvature and Finsler manifold of $s$-$ps$-curvature. Necessary and sufficient conditions for such special Finsler manifolds to be invariant…
In this paper, we introduce and investigate a general transformation or change of Finsler metrics, which is referred to as a generalized $β$-conformal change: $$L(x,y) \longrightarrow\overline{L}(x,y) = f(e^{σ(x)}L(x,y),β(x,y)).$$ This transformation combines both $β$-change and conformal change in a general setting. The change, under this transformation, of the fundamental Finsler connections, together with their associated geometric objects, are obtained. Some invariants and various special Finsler spaces are investigated under this change. The most important changes of Finsler metrics exist…
In this paper, we prove that lightlike geodesics of a pseudo-Finsler manifold and its focal points are preserved up to reparametrization by anisotropic conformal changes, using the Chern connection and the anisotropic calculus and the fact that geodesics are critical points of the energy functional and Jacobi fields, the kernel of its index form. This result has applications to the study of Finsler spacetimes.
In this paper, we investigate the change of Finslr metrics $$L(x,y) \to\bar{L}(x,y) = f(e^{σ(x)}L(x,y),β(x,y)),$$ which we refer to as a generalized $β$-conformal change. Under this change, we study some special Finsler spaces, namely, quasi C-reducible, semi C-reducible, C-reducible, $C_2$-like, $S_3$-like and $S_4$-like Finsler spaces. We also obtain the transformation of the T-tensor under this change and study some interesting special cases. We then impose a certain condition on the generalized $β$-conformal change, which we call the b-condition, and investigate the geometric consequences …
The conformal properties of complex Finsler metrics are studied. We give a characterization of a compact complex Finsler manifold to be globally conformal Kähler. The critical points of the total holomorphic curvature and total Ricci curvature in the volume preserved conformal classes are studied. The stability of critical Kähler Finsler metrics is obtained. A Yamabe type problem for mean Ricci curvature is considered.
The paper aims to initiate a systematic study of conformal mappings between Finsler spacetimes and, more generally, between pseudo-Finsler spaces. This is done by extending several results in pseudo-Riemannian geometry which are necessary for field-theoretical applications and by proposing a technique which reduces a series of problems involving pseudo-Finslerian conformal vector fields to their pseudo-Riemannian counterparts. Also, we point out, by constructing classes of examples, that conformal groups of flat (locally Minkowskian) pseudo-Finsler spaces can be much richer than both flat Fins…
Applying concepts and tools from classical tangent bundle geometry and using the apparatus of the calculus along the tangent bundle projection ('pull-back formalism'), first we enrich the known lists of the characterizations of affine vector fields on a spray manifold and conformal vector fields on a Finsler manifold. Second, we deduce consequences on vector fields on the underlying manifold of a Finsler structure having one or two of the mentioned geometric properties.
In Finsler geometry the complete lift vector fields have distinguished geometric significance. For example a vector field on a Finsler manifold is said to be conformal if its complete lift is conformal in usual sense. In this work we define a new Riemannian or Pseudo-Riemannian metric on TM derived from a Finsler metric on the base manifold M. This metric is in some senses more general than the other lift metrics defined previously on TM and then we study the complete lift vector fields on TM. More precisely we prove; Let (M,g) be a Finsler manifold, TM its tangent bundle and G a Riemannian me…
In this paper, it is proved that any conformal vector field is homothetic on a locally projectively flat $(α,β)$-space of non-Randers type in dimension $n\ge 3$, and the local solutions of such a vector field are determined. While on a locally projectively flat Randers space, examples showthat the conformal vector fields are not necessarily homothetic.
Finsleroid-Finsler metrics form an important class of singular (y-local) Finsler metrics. They were introduced by G. S. Asanov [2] in 2006. As the special case of the general construction Asanov produced singular (y - local) examples of Landsberg spaces of dimension at least three that are not of Berwald type. The existence of regular (y - global) Landsberg metrics that are not of Berwald type is an open problem up to this day; for a detailed exposition of the so-called unicorn problem in Finsler geometry see D. Bao [3]. In this paper we are going to characterize the Finsleroid-Finsler metrics…
In this paper, we first give two fundamental principles under a technique to characterize conformal vector fields of $(α,β)$ spaces to be homothetic and determine the local structure of those homothetic fields. Then we use the principles to study conformal vector fields of some classes of $(α,β)$ spaces under certain curvature conditions. Besides, we construct a family of non-homothetic conformal vector fields on a family of locally projectively Randers spaces.
We prove the Finsler analog of the conformal Lichnerowicz-Obata conjecture showing that a complete and essential conformal vector field on a non-Riemannian Finsler manifold is a homothetic vector field of a Minkowski metric.
The paper develops the Finsler-like geometry on the 1-jet space for the jet conformal Minkowski (JCM) metric, which naturally extends the Minkowski metric in the Chernov-Pavlov framework. To this aim there are determined the nonlinear connection, distinguished (d-) Cartan linear connection, d-torsions and d-curvatures. The field geometrical gravitational and electromagnetic d-models based on the JCM metric are discussed.
Thurston, in 1986, discovered that the Schwarzian derivative has mysterious properties similar to the curvature on a manifold. After his work, there are several approaches to develop this notion on Riemannian manifolds. Here, a tensor field is identified in the study of global conformal diffeomorphisms on Finsler manifolds as a natural generalization of the Schwarzian derivative. Then, a natural definition of a Mobius mapping on Finsler manifolds is given and its properties are studied. In particular, it is shown that Mobius mappings are mappings that preserve circles and vice versa. Therefore…
A geodesic circle in Finsler geometry is a natural extension of that in a Euclidean space. In this paper, we apply Lie derivatives and the Cartan $Y$-connection to study geodesic circles and (infinitesimal) concircular transformations on a Finsler manifold. We characterize a concircular vector field with some PDEs on the tangent bundle, and then we obtain respective necessary and sufficient conditions for a concircular vector field to be conformal and a conformal vector field to be concircular. We also show conditions for two conformally related Finsler metrics to be concircular, and obtain so…
Here, by extending the definition of circle to Finsler geometry, we show that, every circle-preserving local diffeomorphism is conformal. This result implies that in Finsler geometry, the definition of concircular change of metrics, a priori, does not require the conformal assumption.
Here, the concept of electric capacity on Finsler spaces is introduced and the fundamental conformal invariant property is proved, i.e. the capacity of a compact set on a connected non-compact Finsler manifold is conformal invariant. This work enables mathematicians and theoretical physicists to become more familiar with the global Finsler geometry and one of its new applications.
The aim of the present paper is to establish a global theory of conformal changes in Finsler geometry. Under this change, we obtain the relationships between the most important geometric objects associated to $(M,L)$ and the corresponding objects associated to $(M,\tilde{L})$, $\widetilde{L}=e^{σ(x)} L$ being the Finsler conformal transformation. We have found explicit global expressions relating the two associated Cartan connections $\nabla$ and $\widetilde{\nabla}$, the two associated Berwald connections $D$ and $\widetilde{D}$ and the two associated Barthel connections $Γ$ and $\widetildeΓ$…
On a Finsler manifold $(M,L)$, we consider the change $L\longrightarrow\bar{L}(x,y)=e^{σ(x)}L(x,y)+β(x,y)$, which we call a $β$-conformal change. This change generalizes various types of changes in Finsler geometry: conformal, $C$-conformal, $h$-conformal, Randers and generalized Randers changes. Under this change, we obtain an explicit expression relating the Cartan connection associated to $(M,L)$ and the transformed Cartan connection associated to $(M,\bar{L})$. We also express some of the fundamental geometric objects (canonical spray, nonlinear connection, torsion tensors, ...etc.) of $(M…
The Finslerian unit ball is called the {\it Finsleroid} if the covering indicatrix is a space of constant curvature. We prove that Finsler spaces with such indicatrices possess the remarkable property that the tangent spaces are conformally flat with the conformal factor of the power dependence on the Finsler metric function. It is amazing but the fact that in such spaces the notion of the two-vector angle defined by the geodesic arc on the indicatrix can readily be induced from the Riemannian space obtained upon the conformal transformation, which opens up the straightforward way to induce al…
The aim of this paper is to develop on the 1-jet space J^1(R, M^n) the Finsler-like geometry (in the sense of distinguished (d-) connection, d-torsions, d-curvatures and some gravitational-like and electromagnetic-like geometrical models) attached to the (t,x)-conformal deformation of the Berwald-Moor metric.
In the year 1984 Shibata investigated the theory of a change which is called a $ β$-change of a Finsler metric. On the other hand in 1985 a systematic study of geometry of hypersurfaces in Finsler spaces was given by Matsumoto. In the present paper is to devoted to the study of a condition for a Randers conformal change to be projective and find out when a totally geodesic hypersurface $ F^{n-1} $ remains to be a totally geodesic hypersurface $ F^{n-1} $ under the projective Randers conformal change. Further obatined the condition under which a Finslerian hypersurfaces given by the projective …
The electric capacity of a conductor in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space $R^3 $ is defined as a ratio of a given positive charge on the conductor to the value of potential on the surface. This definition of the capacity is independent of the given charge. The capacity of a set as a mathematical notion was defined first by N. Wiener (1924) and was developed by O. Forstman, C. J. de La Vallee Poussin, and several other French mathematicians in connection with potential theory. This paper develops the theory of conformal invariants for Finsler manifolds. More precisely we prove: The capacity of …
We show that if a Finsler space is conformally automorphic to a Riemannian space and the automorphism is positively homogeneous with respect to tangent vectors, then the indicatrix of the Finsler space is a space of constant curvature. In this case, the Finslerian two-vector angle can explicitly be found, which gives rise to simple and explicit representation for the connection preserving the angle in the indicatrix-homogeneous case. The connection is metrical and the Finsler space is obtainable from the Riemannian space by means of the parallel deformation. Since also the transitivity of cova…
An $n$-dimensional ($n\geq 2$) simply connected, compact without boundary Finsler space of positive constant sectional curvature is conformally homeomorphic to an n-sphere in the Euclidean space $\R^{n+1}$.
The problem of conformal transformation and conformal flatness of Finsler spaces has been studied by so many researchers $\left[ 6,16,17,20,21\right] .$ Recently, Prasad et. al $\left[ 19\right] $ have studied three dimensional conformally flat Landsberg and Berwald spaces and have given some important results. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the idea of conformal change to four dimensional Finsler spaces and find the suitable conditions under which a four dimensional conformally flat Landsberg space becomes a Berwald space.
For every Finsler metric $F$ we associate a Riemannian metric $g_F$ (called the Binet-Legendre metric). The transformation $F \mapsto g_F$ is $C^0$-stable and has good smoothness properties, in contrast to previous constructions. The Riemannian metric $g_F$ also behaves nicely under conformal or bilipshitz deformation of the Finsler metric $F$. These properties makes it a powerful tool in Finsler geometry and we illustrate that by solving a number of named Finslerian geometric problems. We also generalize and give new and shorter proofs of a number of known results. In particular we answer a q…
In this paper, we studied a Finsler space whose metric is given by an h-exponential change and obtain the Cartan connection coefficients for the change. We also find the necessary and sufficient condition for an h-exponential change of Finsler metric to be projective.
In every conformal class of Finsler (or Riemannian) metrics on a closed manifold there exists a residual subset of Finsler metrics, such that, with respect to the residual Finsler metrics, in any non-trivial homotopy class of free loops there is precisely one shortest geodesic loop.
The aim of the present paper is to provide an intrinsic investigation of projective changes in Finlser geometry, following the pullback formalism. Various known local results are generalized and other new intrinsic results are obtained. Nontrivial characterizations of projective changes are given. The fundamental projectively invariant tensors, namely, the projective deviation tensor, the Weyl torsion tensor, the Weyl curvature tensor and the Douglas tensor are investigated. The properties of these tensors and their interrelationships are obtained. Projective connections and projectively flat …
Recently, we have studied the Finsler space with h-Matsumoto change and found Cartan connection for the transformed space [2]. In this paper, we have discussed certain geometrical properties of the hypersurface of a Finsler space for the h-Matsumoto change.
Recently we have obtained the Cartan connection for the Finsler space whose metric is given by an exponential change with an h-vector. In this paper, we discuss certain geometric properties of a Finslerian hyperspace subjected to an h-exponential change of metric.
In this paper, we consider Kropina change of $m$-th root Finsler metrics. We find necessary and sufficient condition under which the Kropina change of an $m$-th root Finsler metric be locally dually flat. Then we prove that the Kropina change of an $m$-th root Finsler metric is locally projectively flat if and only if it is locally Minkowskian.
In this paper, we study the relationship between isoparametric hypersurfaces and hypersurfaces with constant principal curvatures in Finsler spaces. We give some examples of isoparametric hypersurfaces with (non)constant principal curvatures on Randers manifolds with nonconstant flag curvatures. Furthermore, we construct an example of a conformally flat Randers manifold which admits a family of nonisoparametric hyperplanes with constant principal curvatures.
Let $(M,F)$ be a Finsler manifold. We construct a 1-cocycle on $\Diff(M)$ with values in the space of differential operators acting on sections of some bundles, by means of the Finsler function $F.$ As an operator, it has several expressions: in terms of the Chern, Berwald, Cartan or Hashiguchi connection, although its cohomology class does not depend on them. This cocycle is closely related to the conformal Schwarzian derivatives introduced in our previous work. The second main result of this paper is to discuss some properties of the conformally invariant quantization map by means of a Sazak…
The concept of h-vector was introduced by H. Izumi in 1980. Recently we have obtained the Cartan connection for the Finsler space whose metric is given by Kropina change with an h-vector. In 1985, M. Matsumoto studied the theory of Finsler hypersurface. In this paper, we derive certain geometrical properties of a Finslerian hypersurface subjected to a Kropina change with an h-vector
The present paper deals with the Killing correspondence between some Finsler spaces. We consider a Finsler space equipped with a $β$-change of metric and study the Killing correspondence between the original Finsler space and the Finsler space equipped with $β$-change of metric. We obtain necessary and sufficient condition for a vector field Killing in the original Finsler space to be Killing in the Finsler space equipped with $β$-change of metric. Certain consequences of such result are also discussed.
In this paper, we consider a Finsler space with a Randers change of Quartic metric F = $\sqrt[4]{α^4 + β^4} + β$. The conditions for this space to be with reversible geodesics are obtained. Further, we study some geometrical properties of F with reversible geodesics and prove that the Finsler metric F induces a generalized weighted quasi-distance $d_F$ on M.
In some recent papers, the relations existing between the metric properties of Randers spaces and the conformal geometry of stationary Lorentzian manifolds were discovered and investigated. In this note, we focus on the equality between the index of a geodesic in a Randers space and that of its lightlike lift in the associated conformal stationary spacetime. Moreover we make some remarks about regularity of the energy functional of a Finsler metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of $H^1$ curves between two points, in connection with infinite dimensional techniques in Morse Theory.
In this paper, we find a condition under which a Finsler space with Kropina change of mth-root metric is projectively related to a mth-root metric and also we find a condition under which this Kropina transformed mth-root metric is locally dually flat. Moreover we find the condition for its Projective flatness.
A trivial projective change of a Finsler metric $F$ is the Finsler metric $F + df$. I explain when it is possible to make a given Finsler metric both forward and backward complete by a trivial projective change. The problem actually came from lorentz geometry and mathematical relativity: it was observed that it is possible to understand the light-line geodesics of a (normalized, standard) stationary 4-dimensional space-time as geodesics of a certain Finsler Randers metric on a 3-dimensional manifold. The trivial projective change of the Finsler metric corresponds to the choice of another 3-dim…
The notion of a Douglas space of second kind of a Finsler space with $(α, β)$-metric was introduced by I. Y. Lee [9]. Since then, so many geometers have studied this topic e. g., [14]. In this paper, we prove that a Douglas space of second kind with special $% (α, β)$-metric $α+εβ+ k \frac{β^2}{α}$ is conformally transformed to a Douglas space of second kind. Further, we obtain some results which prove that a Douglas space of second kind with certain $(α, β)$-metrics such as Randers metric, Kropina metric, first approximate Matsumoto metric and Finsler space with square metric is conformally t…
In this paper, we consider Randers change of some special $ (α, β)- $ metrics. First we find the fundamental metric tensor and Cartan tensor of these Randers changed $ (α, β)- $metrics. Next, we establish a general formula for inverse of fundamental metric tensors of these metrics. Finally, we find the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the Randers change of these $ (α, β)- $ metrics are projectively and locally dually flat.
In this paper, we discuss the Finsler spaces $(M^n,L)$ and $(M^n,\,^{*}L)$, where $^{*}L(x,y)$ is obtained from $L(x,y)$ by Kropina change $^{*}L(x,y)=\frac{L^2(x,y)}{b_i(x,y)\,y^i}$ and $b^{}_{i}(x,y)$ is an $h$-vector in $(M^n,L)$. We find the necessary and sufficient condition when the Cartan connection coefficients for both spaces $(M^n,L)$ and $(M^n,\,^{*}L)$ are the same. We also find the necessary and sufficient condition for Kropina change with an $h$-vector to be projective.
In the present paper, we find the conditions to characterize projective change between two $(α, β)$-metrics, F = $α+ εβ+ k\frac{β^2}α$ ($ε$ and k $\neq$ 0 are constants) and a Matsumoto metric $\bar{F}=\frac{\barα^2}{\barα -\barβ}$ on a manifold with dimension $n \geq 3$ where $α$ and $\barα$ are two Riemannian metrics, $β$ and $\barβ$ are two non-zero 1-forms. Moreover, we study such projective changes when F has some special curvature properties.
The study of curvature properties of homogeneous Finsler spaces with $(α, β)$-metrics is one of the central problems in Riemann-Finsler geometry. In this paper, we consider homogeneous Finsler spaces with square metric and Randers change of square metric. First, we derive the explicit formulae for Ricci curvature of homogeneous Finsler spaces with these metrics. Next, we find a necessary and sufficient condition under which a homogeneous Finsler space with either of these metrics is of vanishing $S$-curvature. The formulae for Ricci curvature of homogeneous Finsler spaces with square metric an…
The Finsler spaces in which the tangent Riemannian spaces are conformally flat prove to be characterized by the condition that the indicatrix is a space of constant curvature. In such spaces the Finslerian normalized two-vector angle can be explicated from the respective two-vector angle of the associated Riemannian space. Therefore the way is opening to propose explicitly the connection preserving the angle even at the indicatrix-inhomogeneous level, that is, when the indicatrix curvature value ${\mathcal C}_{\text{Ind.}} $ is permitted to be an arbitrary smooth function of the indicatrix pos…
We review properties of so-called special conformal Killing tensors on a Riemannian manifold $(Q,g)$ and the way they give rise to a Poisson-Nijenhuis structure on the tangent bundle $TQ$. We then address the question of generalizing this concept to a Finsler space, where the metric tensor field comes from a regular Lagrangian function $E$, homogeneous of degree two in the fibre coordinates on $TQ$. It is shown that when a symmetric type (1,1) tensor field $K$ along the tangent bundle projection $τ: TQ\to Q$ satisfies a differential condition which is similar to the defining relation of specia…
The study of curvature properties of homogeneous Finsler spaces with $(α, β)$-metrics is one of the central problems in Riemann-Finsler geometry. In the present paper, the existence of invariant vector fields on homogeneous Finsler spaces with square $(α, β)$-metric and Randers changed square $(α, β)$-metric is proved. Further, an explicit formula for $S$-curvature of these $(α, β)$-metrics is established. Finally, using the formula of $S$-curvature, the mean Berwald curvature of afore said $(α, β)$-metrics is calculated.
