We propose a moving mesh adaptive approach for solving time-dependent partial differential equations. The motion of spatial grid points is governed by a moving mesh PDE (MMPDE) in which a mesh relaxation time τis employed as a regularization parameter. Previously reported results on MMPDEs have invariably employed a constant value of the parameter τ. We extend this standard approach by incorporating a variable relaxation time that is calculated adaptively alongside the solution in order to regularize the mesh appropriately throughout a computation. We focus on singular problems involving self-similar blow-up to demonstrate the advantages of using a variable relaxation ime over a fixed one in terms of accuracy, stability and efficiency.
Solution interpolation between deforming meshes is an important component for several applications in scientific computing, including indirect arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian and rezoning moving mesh methods in numerical solution of partial differential equations. In this paper, a high-order, conservative, and positivity-preserving interpolation scheme is developed based on the discontinuous Galerkin solution of a linear time-dependent equation on deforming meshes. The scheme works for bounded but otherwise arbitrary mesh deformation from the old mesh to the new one. The cost and positivity pres…
This paper develops high-order accurate entropy stable (ES) adaptive moving mesh finite difference schemes for the two- and three-dimensional special relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) and magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) equations, which is the high-order accurate extension of [J.M. Duan and H.Z. Tang, Entropy stable adaptive moving mesh schemes for 2D and 3D special relativistic hydrodynamics, J. Comput. Phys., 426(2021), 109949]. The key point is the derivation of the higher-order accurate entropy conservative (EC) and ES finite difference schemes in the curvilinear coordinates by carefully dealing …
An interface preserving moving mesh algorithm in two or higher dimensions is presented. It resolves a moving $(d-1)$-dimensional manifold directly within the $d$-dimensional mesh, which means that the interface is represented by a subset of moving mesh cell-surfaces. The underlying mesh is a conforming simplicial partition that fulfills the Delaunay property. The local remeshing algorithms allow for strong interface deformations. We give a proof that the given algorithms preserve the interface after interface deformation and remeshing steps. Originating from various numerical methods, data is …
This paper presents high order accurate discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for wave problems on moving curved meshes with general choices of basis and quadrature. The proposed method adopts an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation to map the acoustic wave equation from the time-dependent moving physical domain onto a fixed reference domain. For moving curved meshes, weighted mass matrices must be assembled and inverted at each time step when using explicit time stepping methods. We avoid this step by utilizing an easily invertible weight-adjusted approximation. The resulting semi-di…
We propose a new approach for controlling the characteristics of certain mesh faces during optimization of high-order curved meshes. The practical goals are tangential relaxation along initially aligned curved boundaries and internal surfaces, and mesh fitting to initially non-aligned surfaces. The distinct feature of the method is that it utilizes discrete finite element functions (for example level set functions) to define implicit surfaces, which are used to adapt the positions of certain mesh nodes. The algorithm does not require CAD descriptions or analytic parametrizations, and can be be…
The selection of time step plays a crucial role in improving stability and efficiency in the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) solution of hyperbolic conservation laws on adaptive moving meshes that typically employs explicit stepping. A commonly used selection of time step is a direct extension based on Courant-Friedrichs-Levy (CFL) conditions established for fixed and uniform meshes. In this work, we provide a mathematical justification for those time step selection strategies used in practical adaptive DG computations. A stability analysis is presented for a moving mesh DG method for linear scala…
A Lagrangian-type numerical scheme called the "comoving mesh method" or CMM is developed for numerically solving certain classes of moving boundary problems which include, for example, the classical Hele-Shaw flow problem and the well-known mean curvature flow problem. This finite element scheme exploits the idea that the normal velocity field of the moving boundary can be extended throughout the entire domain of definition of the problem using, for instance, the Laplace operator. Then, the boundary as well as the finite element mesh of the domain are easily updated at every time step by movin…
Adaptive moving spatial meshes are useful for solving physical models given by time-dependent partial differentialequations. However, special consideration must be given when combining adaptive meshing procedures with ensemble-based data assimilation (DA) techniques. In particular, we focus on the case where each ensemble member evolvesindependently upon its own mesh and is interpolated to a common mesh for the DA update. This paper outlines aframework to develop time-dependent reference meshes using locations of observations and the metric tensors (MTs)or monitor functions that define the spa…
Adaptive meshes have the potential to improve the accuracy and efficiency of atmospheric modelling by increasing resolution where it is most needed. Mesh re-distribution, or r-adaptivity, adapts by moving the mesh without changing the connectivity. This avoids some of the challenges with h-adaptivity (adding and removing points): the solution does not need to be mapped between meshes, which can be expensive and introduces errors, and there are no load balancing problems on parallel computers. A long standing problem with both forms of adaptivity has been changes in volume of the domain as reso…
We present an efficient mixed finite element method to solve the fourth-order thin film flow equations using moving mesh refinement. The moving mesh strategy is based on harmonic mappings developed by Li et al. [J. Comput. Phys., 170 (2001), pp. 562-588, and 177 (2002), pp. 365-393]. To achieve a high quality mesh, we adopt an adaptive monitor function and smooth it based on a diffusive mechanism. A variety of numerical tests are performed to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the method. The moving mesh refinement accurately resolves the overshoot and downshoot structures and reduces …

Flow in fractured porous media is modeled frequently by discrete fracture-matrix approaches where fractures are treated as dimensionally reduced manifolds. Generalizing earlier work we focus on two-phase flow in time-dependent fracture geometries including the fracture's aperture. We present the derivation of a reduced model for immiscible two-phase flow in porous media. For the reduced model we present a fully conforming finite-volume discretization coupled with a moving-mesh method. This method permits arbitrary movement of facets of the triangulation while being fully conservative. In numer…
We present a novel second-order semi-implicit hybrid finite volume / finite element (FV/FE) scheme for the numerical solution of the incompressible and weakly compressible Navier-Stokes equations on moving unstructured meshes using an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation. The scheme is based on a suitable splitting of the governing PDE into subsystems and employs staggered grids, where the pressure is defined on the primal simplex mesh, while the velocity and the remaining flow quantities are defined on an edge-based staggered dual mesh. The key idea of the scheme is to discretize t…
A high-order, well-balanced, positivity-preserving quasi-Lagrange moving mesh DG method is presented for the shallow water equations with non-flat bottom topography. The well-balance property is crucial to the ability of a scheme to simulate perturbation waves over the lake-at-rest steady state such as waves on a lake or tsunami waves in the deep ocean. The method combines a quasi-Lagrange moving mesh DG method, a hydrostatic reconstruction technique, and a change of unknown variables. The strategies in the use of slope limiting, positivity-preservation limiting, and change of variables to ens…

We present a posteriori error estimates for inconsistent and non-hierarchical Galerkin methods for linear parabolic problems, allowing them to be used in conjunction with very general mesh modification for the first time. We treat schemes which are non-hierarchical in the sense that the spatial Galerkin spaces used on consecutive time-steps may be completely unrelated from one another. The practical interest of this setting is demonstrated by applying our results to finite element methods on moving meshes and using the estimators to drive an adaptive algorithm based on a virtual element method…

Hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) cover a wide range of interesting phenomena, from human and hearth-sciences up to astrophysics: this unavoidably requires the treatment of many space and time scales in order to describe at the same time observer-size macrostructures, multi-scale turbulent features, and also zero-scale shocks. Moreover, numerical methods for solving hyperbolic PDEs must reliably handle different families of waves: smooth rarefactions, and discontinuities of shock and contact type. In order to achieve these goals, an effective approach consists in the combination…
High-order accurate well-balanced energy stable adaptive moving mesh finite difference schemes for the shallow water equations with non-flat bottom topography
This paper develops entropy stable (ES) adaptive moving mesh schemes for the 2D and 3D special relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) equations. They are built on the ES finite volume approximation of the RHD equations in curvilinear coordinates, the discrete geometric conservation laws, and the mesh adaptation implemented by iteratively solving the Euler-Lagrange equations of the mesh adaption functional in the computational domain with suitably chosen monitor functions. First, a sufficient condition is proved for the two-point entropy conservative (EC) flux, by mimicking the derivation of the conti…
This paper extends the high-order entropy stable (ES) adaptive moving mesh finite difference schemes developed in [14] to the two- and three-dimensional (multi-component) compressible Euler equations with the stiffened equation of state. The two-point entropy conservative (EC) flux is first constructed in the curvilinear coordinates. The high-order semi-discrete EC schemes are given with the aid of the two-point EC flux and the high-order discretization of the geometric conservation laws, and then the high-order semi-discrete ES schemes satisfying the entropy inequality are derived by adding t…
We present a new family of very high order accurate direct Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) Finite Volume (FV) and Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes for the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic PDE systems on moving 2D Voronoi meshes that are regenerated at each time step and which explicitly allow topology changes in time. The Voronoi tessellations are obtained from a set of generator points that move with the local fluid velocity. We employ an AREPO-type approach, which rapidly rebuilds a new high quality mesh rearranging the element shapes and neighbors in order to guarantee a robust mesh …
For most finite element simulations, boundary-conforming meshes have significant advantages in terms of accuracy or efficiency. This is particularly true for complex domains. However, with increased complexity of the domain, generating a boundary-conforming mesh becomes more difficult and time consuming. One might therefore decide to resort to an approach where individual boundary-conforming meshes are pieced together in a modular fashion to form a larger domain. This paper presents a stabilized finite element formulation for fluid and temperature equations on sliding meshes. It couples the so…
