We prove that if $q$ is a power of a prime $p$ and $p^k$ divides $a$, with $k\ge 0$, then \[ 1+(q-1)\sum_{0\le b(q-1)<a} \binom{a}{b(q-1)}\equiv 0\pmod{p^{k+1}}. \] The special case of this congruence where $q=p$ was proved by Carlitz in 1953 by means of rather deep properties of the Bernoulli numbers. A more direct approach produces our generalization and several related results.
Let $L/K$ be a finite extension of congruence function fields. We say that $L/K$ is a {\it radical extension} if $L$ is generated by roots of polynomials $u^{M}-α\in K[u]$, where $u^{M}$ is the action of Carlitz-Hayes. We study a special class of these extensions, the {\it radical cyclotomic} extensions. We prove that any radical cyclotomic extension has order a power of the characteristic of $K$. We also give bounds for the Carlitz-Hayes torsion of these extensions.
The classical Grunwald--Wang theorem is an example of a local--global (or Hasse) principle stating that except in some special cases which are precisely determined, an element $m$ in a number field $\mathbb{K}$ is an $a$-th power in $\mathbb{K}$ if and only if it is an $a$-th power in the completion $\mathbb{K}_{v}$ for all but finitely many primes $v$ of $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper, we prove a Carlitz module analogue of the Grunwald--Wang theorem.
For various positive integers $k$, the sums of $k$th powers of the first $n$ positive integers, $S_k(n+1)=1^k+2^k+...+n^k$, have got to be some of the most popular sums in all of mathematics. In this note we prove that for each $k\ge 2 $$ 2S_{2k+1}(n)- (2k+1)nS_{2k}(n)\equiv \{{array}{ll} 0\,(\bmod{\,n^3}) & {\rm if}\,\,k\,\,{\rm is\,\,even\,\,or}\,\, n\,\, {\rm is\,\, odd} & {\rm or} \,\, n\equiv 0\,(\bmod{\,4}) \frac{n^3}{2}\,(\bmod{\,n^3}) & {\rm if}\,\,k\,\,{\rm is\,\, odd} &,\,{\rm and}\,\, n\equiv 2\,(\bmod{\,4}). {array}.$$ The above congruence allows us to state an equivalent formulati…
The purpose of this paper is to show how a congruence between (the Fourier coefficients of) a Hilbert cusp form and a Hilbert Eisenstein series of parallel weight $2$ gives rise to congruences between algebraic parts of critical values of their $L$-functions. This is a generalization of a result of V. Vatsal.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for a negative integer to be a trivial zero of a new type of $L$-series recently discovered by F. Pellarin, and it is shown that any such trivial zero is simple. We determine the exact degree of the special polynomials associated to Pellarin's $L$-series. The theory of Carlitz polynomial approximations is developed further for both additive and $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear functions. Using Carlitz' theory we give generating series for the power sums occurring as the coefficients of the special polynomials associated to Pellarin's series, and a connection …
A connection between the theory of formal groups and arithmetic number theory is established. In particular, it is shown how to construct general Almkvist--Meurman--type congruences for the universal Bernoulli polynomials that are related with the Lazard universal formal group \cite{Tempesta1}-\cite{Tempesta3}. Their role in the theory of $L$--genera for multiplicative sequences is illustrated. As an application, sequences of integer numbers are constructed. New congruences are also obtained, useful to compute special values of a new class of Riemann--Hurwitz--type zeta functions.
In this work we prove congruences between special values of elliptic curves with CM that seem to play a central role in the analytic side of the non-commutative Iwasawa theory. These congruences are the analogue for elliptic curves with CM of those proved by Kato, Ritter and Weiss for the Tate motive. The proof is based on the fact that the critical values of elliptic curves with CM, or what amounts to the same, the critical values of Grössencharacters, can be expressed as values of Hilbert-Eisenstein series at CM points. We believe that our strategy can be generalized to provide congruences f…
We prove an integrality result for the value at s=1 of the adjoint L-function associated to a cohomological cuspidal automorphic representation on GL(n) over any number field. We then show that primes (outside an exceptional set) dividing this special value give rise to congruences between automorphic forms. We also prove a non-vanishing property at infinity for the relevant Rankin-Selberg L-functions on GL(n) x GL(n).
We propose a conjecture on special values of $ L $-functions in a function field context with positive characteristic coefficients. For $ M $ a uniformizable $ t $-motive with everywhere good reduction we conjecture a relation between the value of the Goss $ L $-function $ L(M^\vee, s) $ at $ s = 0 $ and the uniformization of the abelian $ t $-module associated with $ M $. When $ M $ is a power of the Carlitz $ t $-motive the conjecture specializes to a theorem of Anderson and Thakur on Carlitz zeta values. Beyond this case we present numerical evidence.
In this paper we show how one can combine the p-adic Rankin-Selberg product construction of Hida with freeness results of Hecke modules of Wiles to establish interesting congruences between special values of L-functions. These congruences is a part of some deep conjectural congruences that follow from the work of Kato on the non-commutative Iwasawa theory of the false Tate curve extension.
Given an odd prime p, we prove a congruence on the p-residue of the Fermat quotient q_p(a) in base a with 0<a<p, which arises from a generalization of the Voronoi congruences and from some other congruences on sums and weighted sums of divided Bernoulli numbers. As an application in the base 2 case, we retrieve a congruence for the first generalized harmonic number of order (p-1)/2, a generalization originally due to Z-H. Sun of a classical congruence known since long for the harmonic number of order (p-1)/2 as a special case of the Lerch formula. We find a sharpening of the Voronoi congruence…
We develop a framework to investigate conjectures on congruences between the algebraic part of special values of $L$-functions of congruent motives. We show that algebraic local Euler factors satisfy precise interpolation properties in $p$-adic families of motives and that algebraic $p$-adic $L$-functions exist in quite large generality for $p$-adic families of automorphic motives. We formulate two conjectures refining (and correcting) the currently existing formulation of the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture with coefficients in Hecke algebras and pointing out the links between conjectu…
For each of the $15$ known sporadic Apéry-like sequences, we prove congruences modulo $p^2$ that are natural extensions of the Lucas congruences modulo $p$. This extends a result of Gessel for the numbers used by Apéry in his proof of the irrationality of $ζ(3)$. Moreover, we show that each of these sequences satisfies two-term supercongruences modulo $p^{2r}$. Using special constant term representations recently discovered by Gorodetsky, we prove these supercongruences in the two cases that remained previously open.
Let $p>5$ be a prime. We prove congruences modulo $p^{3-d}$ for sums of the general form $\sum_{k=0}^{(p-3)/2}\binom{2k}{k}t^k/(2k+1)^{d+1}$ and $\sum_{k=1}^{(p-1)/2}\binom{2k}{k}t^k/k^d$ with $d=0,1$. We also consider the special case $t=(-1)^{d}/16$ of the former sum, where the congruences hold modulo $p^{5-d}$.
We prove the transfer congruence between $p$-adic Hecke $L$-functions for CM fields over cyclotomic extensions, which is a non-abelian generalization of the Kummer's congruence. The ingredients of the proof include the comparison between Hilbert modular varieties, the $q$-expansion principle, and some modification of Hsieh's Whittaker model for Katz' Eisenstein series. As a first application, we prove explicit congruence between special values of Hasse-Weil $L$-function of a CM elliptic curve twisted by Artin representations. As a second application, we prove the existence of a non-commutative…
For coprime positive integers $q$ and $e$, let $m(q,e)$ denote the least positive integer $t$ such that there exists a sum of $t$ powers of $q$ which is divisible by $e$. We prove an upper bound for $m(q.e)$ and investigate the case where $m(q,e)$ is "large". We also pay special attention to the situation where $e$ is a prime power.
In this paper we provide a sufficient condition for a prime to be a congruence prime for an automorphic form $f$ on the unitary group $U(n,n)(A_F)$ for a large class of totally real fields $F$ via a divisibility of a special value of the standard $L$-function associated to $f$. We also study $\ell$-adic properties of the Fourier coefficients of an Ikeda lift $I_ϕ$ (of an elliptic modular form $ϕ$) on $U(n,n)(A_{\mathbf{Q}})$ proving that they are $\ell$-adic integers which do not all vanish modulo $\ell$. Finally we combine these results to show that the condition of $\ell$ being a congruence …
We find experimental examples of congruences of Hecke eigenvalues between automorphic representations of groups such as $\mathrm{GSp}_2(\mathbb{A})$, $\mathrm{SO}(4,3)(\mathbb{\mathbb{A}})$ and $\mathrm{SO}(5,4)(\mathbb{A})$, where the prime modulus should, for various reasons, appear in the algebraic part of a critical "tensor-product" $L$-value associated to cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A})$ and $\mathrm{GSp}_2(\mathbb{A})$. Using special techniques for evaluating $L$-functions with few known coefficients, we compute sufficiently good approximations to detec…
We study congruences involving truncated hypergeometric series of the form_rF_{r-1}(1/2,...,1/2;1,...,1;λ)_{(mp^s-1)/2} = \sum_{k=0}^{(mp^s-1)/2} ((1/2)_k/k!)^r λ^k where p is a prime and m, s, r are positive integers. These truncated hypergeometric series are related to the arithmetic of a family of algebraic varieties and exhibit Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer type congruences. In particular, when r=3, they are related to K3 surfaces. For special values of λ, with s=1 and r=3, our congruences are stronger than what can be predicted by the theory of formal groups because of the presence of ellipti…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. In the paper we collect the author's various conjectures on congruences modulo $p$ or $p^2$, which are concerned with sums of binomial coefficients, Lucas sequences, power residues and special binary quadratic forms.
Scattering constants are special values of Dirichlet series associated to non-holomorphic Eisenstein series. In this paper we give closed formulas for the scattering constants related to a non-congruence subgroup obtained via a Belyi map of an elliptic curve.
The main results of this article concern the definition of a compactly supported cohomology class for the congruence group $Γ_0(p^n)$ with values in the second Milnor $K$-group (modulo 2-torsion) of the ring of $p$-integers of the cyclotomic extension $\Q(μ_{p^n})$. We endow this cohomology group with a natural action of the standard Hecke operators and discuss the existence of special Hecke eigenclasses in its parabolic cohomology. Moreover, for $n=1$, assuming the non-degeneracy of a certain pairing on $p$-units induced by the Steinberg symbol when $(p,k)$ is an irregular pair, i.e. $p|\frac…
The polynomial Ramanujan sum was first introduced by Carlitz [7], and a generalized version by Cohen [10]. In this paper, we study the arithmetical and analytic properties of these sums, derive various fundamental identities, such as H older formula, reciprocity formula, orthogonality relation and Davenport{Hasse type formula. In particular, we show that the special Dirichlet series involving the polynomial Ramanujan sums are, indeed, the entire functions on the whole complex plane, we also give a square mean values estimation. The main results of this paper are new appearance to us, which ind…
For a positive integer $k$, we extend the surjectivity results from special linear groups (Type $A_k$) and symplectic linear groups (Type $C_k$) onto product of generalized projective spaces by associating the rows or columns, to certain congruence ideal subgroups of special linear groups and symplectic linear groups.
We fix $\ell$ a prime and let $M$ be an integer such that $\ell\not|M$; let $f\in S_2(Γ_1(M\ell^2))$ be a newform supercuspidal of fixed type related to the nebentypus, at $\ell$ and special at a finite set of primes. Let $\TT^ψ$ be the local quaternionic Hecke algebra associated to $f$. The algebra $\TT^ψ$ acts on a module $\mathcal M^ψ_f$ coming from the cohomology of a Shimura curve. Applying the Taylor-Wiles criterion and a recent Savitt's theorem, $\TT^ψ$ is the universal deformation ring of a global Galois deformation problem associated to $\orho_f$. Moreover $\mathcal M^ψ_f$ is free of …
We use the arithmetic of ideals in orders to parameterize the roots $μ\pmod m$ of the polynomial congruence $F(μ) \equiv 0 \pmod m$, $F(X) \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$ monic, irreducible and degree $d$. Our parameterization generalizes Gauss's classic parameterization of the roots of quadratic congruences using binary quadratic forms, which had previously only been extended to the cubic polynomial $F(X) = X^3 - 2$. We show that only a special class of ideals are needed to parameterize the roots $μ\pmod m$, and that in the cubic setting, $d = 3$, general ideals correspond to pairs of roots $μ_1 \pmod{m_1…
We define and study a collection of special cycles on certain non-PEL Shimura varieties for $U(2,1) \times U(1,1)$ that appear naturally in the context of the recent conjectures of Gan, Gross and Prasad on restrictions of automorphic forms for unitary groups and conjectural generalizations of the Gross--Zagier formula. We prove a combinatorial formula expressing the Galois action in terms of the distance function on the Bruhat--Tits buildings for these groups. In addition, we calculate explicitly the Hecke polynomial appearing in the congruence relation conjectured by Blasius and Rogawski. Usi…
In this paper we study special bases of certain spaces of half-integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms. We establish a criterion for the integrality of Fourier coefficients of such bases. By using recursive relations between Hecke operators, we derive relations of Fourier coefficients of each basis element and obtain congruences of the Fourier coefficients, which extend known congruences for traces of singular moduli.
Using Watson's terminating $_8ϕ_7$ transformation formula, we prove a family of $q$-congruences modulo the square of a cyclotomic polynomial, which were originally conjectured by the author and Zudilin [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 475 (2019), 1636--646]. As an application, we deduce two supercongruences modulo $p^4$ ($p$ is an odd prime) and their $q$-analogues. This also partially confirms a special case of Swisher's (H.3) conjecture.
Recently the first author proved a congruence proposed in 2006 by Adamchuk: $\sum_{k=1}^{\lfloor\frac{2p}{3}\rfloor}\binom{2k}{k}\equiv 0\pmod{p^2}$ for any prime $p=1 \pmod{3}$. In this paper, we provide more examples (with proofs) of congruences of the same kind $$\sum_{k=1}^{\lfloor\frac{ap}{r}\rfloor}\binom{2k}{k}x^k \pmod{p^2}$$ where $p$ is a prime such that $p\equiv 1 \pmod{r}$, $a/r$ is a fraction in $(1/2,1)$ and $x$ is a $p$-adic integer. The key ingredients are the $p$-adic Gamma functions $Γ_p$ and a special class of computer-discovered hypergeometric identities.
Let $p_r(n)$ denote the number of $r$-component multipartitions of $n$, and let $S_{γ,λ}$ be the space spanned by $η(24z)^γϕ(24z)$, where $η(z)$ is the Dedekind's eta function and $ϕ(z)$ is a holomorphic modular form in $M_λ({\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}))$. In this paper, we show that the generating function of $p_r(\frac{m^k n +r}{24})$ with respect to $n$ is congruent to a function in the space $S_{γ,λ}$ modulo $m^k$. As special cases, this relation leads to many well known congruences including the Ramanujan congruences of $p(n)$ modulo $5,7,11$ and Gandhi's congruences of $p_2(n)$ modulo 5 and $p…
In this paper, using properties of Ramanujan sums and of the discrete Fourier transform of arithmetic functions, we give an explicit formula for the number of solutions of the linear congruence $a_1x_1+\cdots +a_kx_k\equiv b \pmod{n}$, with $\gcd(x_i,n)=t_i$ ($1\leq i\leq k$), where $a_1,t_1,\ldots,a_k,t_k, b,n$ ($n\geq 1$) are arbitrary integers. As a consequence, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions under which the above restricted linear congruence has no solutions. The number of solutions of this kind of congruence was first considered by Rademacher in 1925 and Brauer in 1926, in …
We prove a representation stability result for the codimension-one cohomology of the level three congruence subgroup of $\mathbf{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$. This is a special case of a question of Church-Farb-Putman which we make more precise. Our methods involve proving several finiteness properties of the Steinberg module for the group $\mathbf{SL}_n(K)$ for $K$ a field. This also lets us give a new proof of Ash-Putman-Sam's homological vanishing theorem for the Steinberg module. We also prove an integral refinement of Church-Putman's homological vanishing theorem for the Steinberg module for the gr…
The Delannoy polynomial $D_n(x)$ is defined by $$ D_n(x)=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}{n+k\choose k}x^k. $$ We prove that, if $x$ is an integer and $p$ is a prime not dividing $x(x+1)$, then \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)D_k(x)^3 &\equiv p\left(\frac{-4x-3}{p}\right) \pmod{p^2}, \\ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)D_k(x)^4 &\equiv p \pmod{p^2}, \\ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(-1)^k(2k+1)D_k(x)^3 &\equiv p\left(\frac{4x+1}{p}\right) \pmod{p^2}, \end{align*} where $\big(\frac{\cdot}{p}\big)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. The first two congruences confirm a conjecture of Z.-W. Sun [Sci. China 57 (2014), 1375--1400].…
