On period maps that are open embeddings

For certain complex projective manifolds (such as K3 surfaces and their higher dimensional analogues, the complex symplectic projective manifolds) the period map takes values in a locally symmetric variety of type IV. It is often an open embedding and in such cases it has been observed that the image is the complement of a locally symmetric (Heegner) divisor. We explain that phenomenon and get our hands on the complementary divisor in terms of geometric data.

Segre embedding and related maps and immersions in differential geometry

Segre embedding was introduced by C. Segre (1863--1924) in his famous 1891 article \cite{segre}. The Segre embedding plays an important roles in algebraic geometry as well as in differential geometry, mathematical physics, and coding theory. In this article, we survey main results on Segre embedding in differential geometry. Moreover, we also present recent differential geometric results on maps and immersions which are constructed in ways similar to Segre embedding.

Arithmetic occult period maps

Several natural complex configuration spaces admit surprising uniformizations as arithmetic ball quotients, by identifying each parametrized object with the periods of some auxiliary object. In each case, the theory of canonical models of Shimura varieties gives the ball quotient the structure of a variety over the ring of integers of a cyclotomic field. We show that the (transcendentally-defined) period map actually respects these algebraic structures, and thus that occult period maps are arithmetic. As an intermediate tool, we develop an arithmetic theory of lattice-polarized K3 surfaces.

Tate Resolutions for Segre Embeddings

We give an explicit description of the terms and differentials of the Tate resolution of sheaves arising from Segre embeddings of $¶^a\times¶^b$. We prove that the maps in this Tate resolution are either coming from Sylvester-type maps, or from Bezout-type maps arising from the so-called toric Jacobian.

L-infinity algebras, Cartan homotopies and period maps

We prove that, for every compact Kaehler manifold, the period map of its Kuranishi family is induced by a natural L-infinity morphism. An alternative construction of zip period maps for Shimura varieties

Let $S$ be the special fibre of a Shimura variety of Hodge type, with good reduction at a place above $p$. We give an alternative construction of the zip period map for $S$, which is used to define the Ekedahl-Oort strata of $S$. The method employed is local, $p$-adic, and group-theoretic in nature.

Periodic points for good reduction maps on curves

The periodic points of a morphism of good reduction for a smooth projective curve with good reduction over the p-adics form a discrete set. This is used to give an interpretation of the morphic height in terms of asymptotic properties of periodic points, and a morphic analogue of Jensen's formula.

Lifting finite self maps of equicharacteristic complete local rings

In the spirit of Fakhruddin (arXiv:math/0212208v1) and Szpiro-Bhatnagar (arXiv:1010.2715v1), we show that for an equicharacteristic complete local ring A, with a given embedding of Spec(A) in the prime spectrum Spec(R) of some complete regular local ring R, any finite self map of A can be lifted to a finite self map of R, keeping the given embedding.

Definability of mixed period maps

We equip integral graded-polarized mixed period spaces with a natural $\mathbb{R}_{alg}$-definable analytic structure, and prove that any period map associated to an admissible variation of integral graded-polarized mixed Hodge structures is definable in $\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$ with respect to this structure. As a consequence we reprove that the zero loci of admissible normal functions are algebraic.

Universality of Rank 6 Plucker Relations and Grassmann Cone Preserving Maps

The Plucker relations define a projective embedding of the Grassmann variety Gr(k,n). We give another finite set of quadratic equations which defines the same embedding, and whose elements all have rank 6. This is achieved by constructing a certain finite set of linear maps from the pth exterior power of n-dimensional space to the 2nd exterior power of 4-dimensional space and pulling back the unique Plucker relation on the latter. We also give a quadratic equation depending on (p+2) parameters having the same properties.
