We study the modular representations of finite groups of Lie type arising in the cohomology of certain quotients of Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated with Coxeter elements. These quotients are related to Gelfand-Graev representations and we present a conjecture on the Deligne-Lusztig restriction of Gelfand-Graev representations. We prove the conjecture for restriction to a Coxeter torus. We deduce a proof of Broué's conjecture on equivalences of derived categories arising from Deligne-Lusztig varieties, for a split group of type $A\_n$ and a Coxeter element. Our study is based on Lusztig's work in characteristic 0.
This article is the final one of a series of articles on certain blocks of modular representations of finite groups of Lie type and the associated geometry. We prove the conjecture of Broué on derived equivalences induced by the complex of cohomology of Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the case of Coxeter elements whenever the defining characteristic is good. We also prove a conjecture of Hiß, Lübeck and Malle on the Brauer trees of the corresponding blocks. As a consequence, we determine the Brauer trees (in particular, the decomposition matrix) of the principal $\ell$-block of $E_7(q)$ when $\el…
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the validity of the assumptions (W) and (S) stated in a previous work, about the torsion in the modular l-adic cohomology of Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to Coxeter elements. We prove that both (W) and (S) hold except for groups of type E_7 or E_8.
The notion of a linear Coxeter system introduced by Vinberg generalizes the geometric representation of a Coxeter group. Our main theorem asserts that if $v$ is an element of the Tits cone of a linear Coxeter system and $\cW$ is the corresponding Coxeter group, then $\cW v \subeq v - C_v,$ where $C_v$ is the convex cone generated by the coroots $\check α$, for which $α(v) > 0$. This implies that the convex hull of $\cW v$ is completely determined by the image of $v$ under the reflections in $\cW$. We also apply an analogous result for convex hulls of $\cW$-orbits in the dual space, although th…
A diagram obtained from the Carter diagram $Γ$ by adding one root together with its bonds such that the resulting subset of roots is linearly independent is said to be the {\it linkage diagram}. Given a linkage diagram, we associate the linkage labels vector, which is introduced like the vector of Dynkin labels. Similarly to the dual Weyl group, we introduce the group $W^{\vee}_L$ associated with $Γ$, and we call it the dual partial Weyl group. The linkage labels vectors connected under the action of $W^{\vee}_L$ constitute the linkage system $\mathscr{L}(Γ)$, which is similar to the weight sy…
We study the cohomology with modular coefficients of Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to Coxeter elements. Under some torsion-free assumption on the cohomology we derive several results on the principal l-block of a finite reductive group G(F_q) when the order of q modulo l is assumed to be the Coxeter number. These results include the determination of the planar embedded Brauer tree of the block (as conjectured by Hiss, Lübeck and Malle) and the derived equivalence predicted by the geometric version of Broué's conjecture.
We classify and explicitly construct the irreducible graded representations of anti-spherical Hecke categories which are concentrated in one degree. Each of these homogeneous representations is one-dimensional and can be cohomologically constructed via a BGG resolution involving every (infinite dimensional) standard representation of the category. We hence determine the complete first row of the inverse parabolic $p$-Kazhdan--Lusztig matrix for an arbitrary Coxeter group and an arbitrary parabolic subgroup. This generalises the Weyl--Kac character formula to all Coxeter systems (and their para…
We present a simple method for determining the shape of fundamental domains of generalized modular groups related to Weyl groups of hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras. These domains are given as subsets of certain generalized upper half planes, on which the Weyl groups act via generalized modular transformations. Our construction only requires the Cartan matrix of the underlying finite-dimensional Lie algebra and the associated Coxeter labels as input information. We present a simple formula for determining the volume of these fundamental domains. This allows us to re-produce in a simple manner the…
We relate the category of sheaves on alcoves that was constructed in "Sheaves on the alcoves and modular representations I" to the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups. In particular, we show that its indecomposable projective objects encode the simple rational characters of a reductive algebraic group in all characteristics above the Coxeter number.
For well-generated complex reflection groups, Chapuy and Stump gave a simple product for a generating function counting reflection factorizations of a Coxeter element by their length. This is refined here to record the number of reflections used from each orbit of hyperplanes. The proof is case-by-case via the classification of well-generated groups. It implies a new expression for the Coxeter number, expressed via data coming from a hyperplane orbit; a case-free proof of this due to J. Michel is included.
It is shown that there is an order isomorphism $ϕ'$ from the poset $V$ of $B\times B$-orbits on the wonderful compactification of a semi-simple adjoint group $G$ with Weyl group $W$ to an interval in reverse Chevalley-Bruhat order on a non-canonically associated Coxeter group $\hat{W}$ (in general neither finite nor affine). Moreover, $ϕ'$ preserves the corresponding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Springer's (partly conjectural) construction of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the analogues of $V$ for general Coxeter groups $W$ is completed by reducing it by a similar order isomorphism to known r…
We consider the set of affine alcoves associated with a root system R as a topological space and consider a certain category S of sheaves of Z-modules on this space. Here Z is the structure algebra of the root system over a field k. To any wall reflection we associate a wall crossing functor on S. In the companion article "Sheaves on the alcoves and modular representations II" we prove that S encodes the simple rational characters of the connected, simply connected algebraic group with root system R over k, in the case that k is algebraically closed with characteristic above the Coxeter number…
Let $W$ denote a simply-laced Coxeter group with $n$ generators. We construct an $n$-dimensional representation $ϕ$ of $W$ over the finite field $F_2$ of two elements. The action of $ϕ(W)$ on $F_2^n$ by left multiplication is corresponding to a combinatorial structure extracted and generalized from Vogan diagrams. In each case W of types A, D and E, we determine the orbits of $F_2^n$ under the action of $ϕ(W)$, and find that the kernel of $ϕ$ is the center $Z(W)$ of $W.$
Using the geometry of the projective plane over the finite field F_q, we construct a Hermitian Lorentzian lattice L_q of dimension (q^2 + q + 2) defined over a certain number ring $\cO$ that depends on q. We show that infinitely many of these lattices are p-modular, that is, p L'_q = L_q, where p is some prime in $\cO$ such that |p|^2 = q. The reflection group of the Lorentzian lattice obtained for q = 3 seems to be closely related to the monster simple group via the presentation of the bimonster as a quotient of the Coxeter group on the incidence graph of P^2(F_3). The Lorentzian lattices L_q…
The Hodge filtration of the module of derivations on the orbit space of a finite real reflection group acting on an $\ell$-dimensional Euclidean space was introduced and studied by K. Saito. The filtration is equivalent data to the flat structure or the Frobenius manifold structure. We will show that the Hodge filtration coincides with the filtration by the order of contacts to the reflecting hyperplanes. Moreover, a standard basis for the Hodge filtration is explicitly given.
Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group W with Coxeter number h, we call a Coxeter element any regular element (in the sense of Springer) of order h in W; this is a slight extension of the most common notion of Coxeter element. We show that the class of these Coxeter elements forms a single orbit in W under the action of reflection automorphisms. For Coxeter and Shephard groups, this implies that an element c is a Coxeter element if and only if there exists a simple system S of reflections such that c is the product of the generators in S. We moreover deduce multiple furth…
In the computation of the intersection cohomology of Shimura varieties, or of the $L^2$ cohomology of equal rank locally symmetric spaces, combinatorial identities involving averaged discrete series characters of real reductive groups play a large technical role. These identities can become very complicated and are not always well-understood (see for example the appendix of [8]). We propose a geometric approach to these identities in the case of Siegel modular varieties using the combinatorial properties of the Coxeter complex of the symmetric group. Apart from some introductory remarks about …
Let $G$ be a unipotent group over a field of characteristic $p > 0$. The theory of character sheaves on $G$ was initiated by V. Drinfeld and developed jointly with D. Boyarchenko. They also introduced the notion of $\mathbb{L}$-packets of character sheaves. Each $\mathbb{L}$-packet can be described in terms of a modular category. Now suppose that the nilpotence class of $G$ is less than $p$. Then the $\mathbb{L}$-packets are in bijection with the set $\mathfrak{g}^*/G$ of coadjoint orbits, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is the Lie ring scheme obtained from $G$ using the Lazard correspondence and $\mathf…
Let W be an arbitrary Coxeter group of simply-laced type (possibly infinite but of finite rank), u,v be any two elements in W, and i be a reduced word (of length m) for the pair (u,v) in the Coxeter group W\times W. We associate to i a subgroup Gamma_i in GL_m(Z) generated by symplectic transvections. We prove among other things that the subgroups corresponding to different reduced words for the same pair (u,v) are conjugate to each other inside GL_m(Z). We also generalize the enumeration result of the first three authors (see AG/9802093) by showing that, under certain assumptions on u and v, …
We consider the polynomial representation S(V*) of the rational Cherednik algebra H_c(W) associated to a finite Coxeter group W at constant parameter c. We show that for any degree d of W and nonnegative integer m the space S(V*) contains a single copy of the reflection representation V of W spanned by the homogeneous singular polynomials of degree d-1+hm, where h is the Coxeter number of W; these polynomials generate an H_c(W) submodule with the parameter c=(d-1)/h+m. We express these singular polynomials through the Saito polynomials that are flat coordinates of the Saito metric on the orbit…
The notion of limit roots of a Coxeter group W was recently introduced (see arXiv:1112.5415 and arXiv:1303.6710): they are the accumulation points of directions of roots of a root system for W. In the case where the root system lives in a Lorentzian space W admits a faithful representation as a discrete reflection group of isometries on a hyperbolic space; the accumulation set of any of its orbits is then classically called the limit set of W. In this article we show that the limit roots of a Coxeter group W acting on a Lorentzian space is equal to the limit set of W seen as a discrete reflect…
We present a combinatorial procedure (based on the W-graph of the Coxeter group) which shows that the characters of many intersection cohomology complexes on low rank complex flag varieties with coefficients in an arbitrary field are given by Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements. Our procedure exploits the existence and uniqueness of parity sheaves. In particular we are able to show that the characters of all intersection cohomology complexes with coefficients in a field on the flag variety of type A_n for n < 7 are given by Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements. By results of Soergel, this implies a part …
We consider the partition of a finite Coxeter group $W$ into left cells with respect to a weight function $L$. In the equal parameter case, Lusztig has shown that the representations carried by the left cells are precisely the so-called constructible ones. We show that this holds for general $L$, if the conjectural properties (P1)--(P15) in Lusztig's book on Hecke algebras with unequal parameters hold for $W,L$. Our proofs use the idea (Gyoja, Rouquier) that left cell representations are projective in the sense of modular representation theory. This also gives partly new proofs for Lusztig's r…
The orbits space of an irreducible linear representation of a finite group is a variety whose coordinate ring is the ring of invariant polynomials. Boris Dubrovin proved that the orbits space of the standard reflection representation of an irreducible finite Coxeter group $\mathcal W$ acquires a natural polynomial Frobenius manifold structure. We apply Dubrovin's method on various orbits spaces of linear representations of finite groups. We find some of them has non or several natural Frobenius manifold structures. On the other hand, these Frobenius manifold structures include rational and tri…
Involution words are variations of reduced words for twisted involutions in Coxeter groups. They arise naturally in the study of the Bruhat order, of certain Iwahori-Hecke algebra modules, and of orbit closures in flag varieties. Specifically, to any twisted involutions $x$, $y$ in a Coxeter group $W$ with automorphism $*$, we associate a set of involution words $\hat{\mathcal{R}}_*(x,y)$. This set is the disjoint union of the reduced words of a set of group elements $\mathcal{A}_*(x,y)$, which we call the atoms of $y$ relative to $x$. The atoms, in turn, are contained in a larger set $\mathca…
In this paper we relate umbral moonshine to the Niemeier lattices: the 23 even unimodular positive-definite lattices of rank 24 with non-trivial root systems. To each Niemeier lattice we attach a finite group by considering a naturally defined quotient of the lattice automorphism group, and for each conjugacy class of each of these groups we identify a vector-valued mock modular form whose components coincide with mock theta functions of Ramanujan in many cases. This leads to the umbral moonshine conjecture, stating that an infinite-dimensional module is assigned to each of the Niemeier lattic…
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group and let $Z$ be the stabilizer of a nilpotent element $e$ of the Lie algebra of $G$. We consider the action of $Z$ on the flag variety of $G$, and we focus on the case where this action has a finite number of orbits (i.e., $Z$ is a spherical subgroup). This holds for instance if $e$ has height $2$. In this case we give a parametrization of the $Z$-orbits and we show that each $Z$-orbit has a structure of algebraic affine bundle. In particular, in type $A$, we deduce that each orbit has a natural cell decomposition. In the aim to study the (strong) Bruhat o…
