In this paper we examine the importance of the choice of metric in path coupling, and the relationship of this to \emph{stopping time analysis}. We give strong evidence that stopping time analysis is no more powerful than standard path coupling. In particular, we prove a stronger theorem for path coupling with stopping times, using a metric which allows us to restrict analysis to standard one-step path coupling. This approach provides insight for the design of non-standard metrics giving improvements in the analysis of specific problems.
We give illustrative applications to hypergraph independent sets and SAT instances, hypergraph colourings and colourings of bipartite graphs.
We give a new method for analysing the mixing time of a Markov chain using path coupling with stopping times. We apply this approach to two hypergraph problems. We show that the Glauber dynamics for independent sets in a hypergraph mixes rapidly as long as the maximum degree Delta of a vertex and the minimum size m of an edge satisfy m>= 2Delta+1. We also show that the Glauber dynamics for proper q-colourings of a hypergraph mixes rapidly if m>= 4 and q > Delta, and if m=3 and q>=1.65Delta. We give related results on the hardness of exact and approximate counting for both problems.
Azéma associated with an honest time L the supermartingale $Z_{t}^{L}=\mathbb{P}[L>t|\mathcal{F}_{t}]$ and established some of its important properties. This supermartingale plays a central role in the general theory of stochastic processes and in particular in the theory of progressive enlargements of filtrations. In this paper, we shall give an additive characterization for these supermartingales, which in turn will naturally provide many examples of enlargements of filtrations. In particular, we use this characterization to establish some path decomposition results, closely related to or re…
We present a short and self-contained proof of the following result: a random time is an honest time that avoids all stopping times if and only if it coincides with the (last) time of maximum of a nonnegative local martingale with zero terminal value and no jumps while at its running supremum, where the latter running supremum process is continuous. Illustrative examples involving local martingales with discontinuous paths are provided.
We propose a numerical method to approximate the value function for the optimal stopping problem of a piecewise deterministic Markov process (PDMP). Our approach is based on quantization of the post jump location---inter-arrival time Markov chain naturally embedded in the PDMP, and path-adapted time discretization grids. It allows us to derive bounds for the convergence rate of the algorithm and to provide a computable $ε$-optimal stopping time. The paper is illustrated by a numerical example.
In this paper, we present a Longstaff-Schwartz-type algorithm for optimal stopping time problems based on the Brownian motion filtration. The algorithm is based on Leão, Ohashi and Russo and, in contrast to previous works, our methodology applies to optimal stopping problems for fully non-Markovian and non-semimartingale state processes such as functionals of path-dependent stochastic differential equations and fractional Brownian motions. Based on statistical learning theory techniques, we provide overall error estimates in terms of concrete approximation architecture spaces with finite Vapni…
We develop a class of pathwise inequalities of the form $H(B_t)\ge M_t+F(L_t)$, where $B_t$ is Brownian motion, $L_t$ its local time at zero and $M_t$ a local martingale. The concrete nature of the representation makes the inequality useful for a variety of applications. In this work, we use the inequalities to derive constructions and optimality results of Vallois' Skorokhod embeddings. We discuss their financial interpretation in the context of robust pricing and hedging of options written on the local time. In the final part of the paper we use the inequalities to solve a class of optimal s…
We develop a new class of path transformations for one-dimensional diffusions that are tailored to alter their long-run behaviour from transient to recurrent or vice versa. This immediately leads to a formula for the distribution of the first exit times of diffusions, which is recently characterised by Karatzas and Ruf \cite{KR} as the minimal solution of an appropriate Cauchy problem under more stringent conditions. A particular limit of these transformations also turn out to be instrumental in characterising the stochastic solutions of Cauchy problems defined by the generators of strict loca…
Let $X$ be a bounded càdlàg process with positive jumps defined on the canonical space of continuous paths. We consider the problem of optimal stopping the process $X$ under a nonlinear expectation operator $\cE$ defined as the supremum of expectations over a weakly compact family of nondominated measures. We introduce the corresponding nonlinear Snell envelope. Our main objective is to extend the Snell envelope characterization to the present context. Namely, we prove that the nonlinear Snell envelope is an $\cE-$supermartingale, and an $\cE-$martingale up to its first hitting time of the obs…
The paper studies a class of multidimensional optimal stopping problems with infinite horizon for linear switching diffusions. There are two main novelties in the optimal problems considered: the underlying stochastic process has discontinuous paths and the cost function is not necessarily integrable on the entire time horizon, where the latter is often a key assumption in classical optimal stopping theory for diffusions, cf. [22, Corollary 2.9]. Under relatively mild conditions, we show, for the class of multidimensional optimal stopping problems under consideration, that the first entry time…
In this paper, we present a discrete-type approximation scheme to solve continuous-time optimal stopping problems based on fully non-Markovian continuous processes adapted to the Brownian motion filtration. The approximations satisfy suitable variational inequalities which allow us to construct $ε$-optimal stopping times and optimal values in full generality. Explicit rates of convergence are presented for optimal values based on reward functionals of path-dependent SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motion. In particular, the methodology allows us to design concrete Monte-Carlo schemes for no…
Last passage times arise in a number of areas of applied probability, including risk theory and degradation models. Such times are obviously not stopping times since they depend on the whole path of the underlying process. We consider the problem of finding a stopping time that minimises the $L^1$-distance to the last time a spectrally negative Lévy process $X$ is below zero. Examples of related problems in a finite horizon setting for processes with continuous paths are Du Toit et al. (2008) and Glover and Hulley (2014), where the last zero is predicted for a Brownian motion with drift, and f…
We consider the optimal stopping problem $v^{(\eps)}:=\sup_{τ\in\mathcal{T}_{0,T}}\mathbb{E}B_{(τ-\eps)^+}$ posed by Shiryaev at the International Conference on Advanced Stochastic Optimization Problems organized by the Steklov Institute of Mathematics in September 2012. Here $T>0$ is a fixed time horizon, $(B_t)_{0\leq t\leq T}$ is the Brownian motion, $\eps\in[0,T]$ is a constant, and $\mathcal{T}_{\eps,T}$ is the set of stopping times taking values in $[\eps,T]$. The solution of this problem is characterized by a path dependent reflected backward stochastic differential equations, from whic…
We study a notion of local time for a continuous path, defined as a limit of suitable discrete quantities along a general sequence of partitions of the time interval. Our approach subsumes other existing definitions and agrees with the usual (stochastic) local times a.s. for paths of a continuous semimartingale. We establish pathwise version of the Itô-Tanaka, change of variables and change of time formulae. We provide equivalent conditions for existence of pathwise local time. Finally, we study in detail how the limiting objects, the quadratic variation and the local time, depend on the choic…
We study the Small Ball Probabilities (SBPs) of Gaussian rough paths. While many works on rough paths study the Large Deviations Principles (LDPs) for stochastic processes driven by Gaussian rough paths, it is a noticeable gap in the literature that SBPs have not been extended to the rough path framework. LDPs provide macroscopic information about a measure for establishing Integrability type properties. SBPs provide microscopic information and are used to establish a locally accurate approximation for a measure. Given the compactness of a Reproducing Kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) ball, its metr…
We investigate the (functional) convex order of for various continuous martingale processes, either with respect to their diffusions coefficients for Lévy-driven SDEs or their integrands for stochastic integrals. Main results are bordered by counterexamples. Various upper and lower bounds can be derived for path wise European option prices in local volatility models. In view of numerical applications, we adopt a systematic (and symmetric) methodology: (a) propagate the convexity in a {\em simulatable} dominating/dominated discrete time model through a backward induction (or linear dynamical pr…
It is known, since the seminal work [T. Lyons, Differential equations driven by rough signals, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana, 14 (1998)], that the solution map associated to a controlled differential equation is locally Lipschitz continuous in $q$-variation resp. $1/q$-Hölder type metrics on the space of rough paths, for any regularity $1/q \in (0,1]$. We extend this to a new class of Besov-Nikolskii-type metrics, with arbitrary regularity $1/q\in (0,1]$ and integrability $p\in [ q,\infty ]$, where the case $p\in \{ q,\infty \} $ corresponds to the known cases. Interestingly, the result is obtained…
