Let D be a divisor in a complex analytic manifold X. A natural problem is to determine when the de Rham complex of meromorphic forms on X with poles along D is quasi-isomorphic to its subcomplex of logarithmic forms. In this mostly expository note, we recall the main results about this problem. In particular, we point out the relevance of the theory of D-modules to this topic.
After explaining the definition of pure and mixed Hodge modules on complex manifolds, we describe some of Saito's most important results and their proofs, and then discuss two simple applications of the theory.
We introduce the notion of a holonomic D-module on a smooth (idealized) logarithmic scheme and show that Verdier duality can be extended to this context. In contrast to the classical case, the pushforward of a holonomic module along an open immersion is in general not holonomic. We introduce a "perverse" t-structure on the category of coherent logarithmic D-modules which makes the dualizing functor t-exact on holonomic modules. This allows us to transfer some of the formalism from the classical setting and in particular show that every holonomic module on an open subscheme can be extended to a…
In the first part we deepen the six-functor theory of (holonomic) logarithmic D-modules, in particular with respect to duality and pushforward along projective morphisms. Then, inspired by work of Ogus, we define a logarithmic analogue of the de Rham functor, sending logarithmic D-modules to certain graded sheaves on the so-called Kato-Nakayama space. For holonomic modules we show that the associated sheaves have finitely generated stalks and that the de Rham functor intertwines duality for D-modules with a version of Poincaré-Verdier duality on the Kato-Nakayama space. Finally, we explain how…
We introduce the notion of log $p$-smoothness which weakens that of log-smoothness and that of having locally $p$-bases. We extend Berthelot's construction of arithmetic $D$-modules and some properties in this context.
Let $O_X$ (resp. $D_X$) be the sheaf of holomorphic functions (resp. the sheaf of linear differential operators with holomorphic coefficients) on $X$ (=the complex affine n-space). Let $Y$ be a locally weakly quasi-homogeneous free divisor defined by a polynomial $f$. In this paper we prove that, locally, the annihilating ideal of $1/f^k$ over $D_X$ is generated by linear differential operators of order 1 (for $k$ big enough). For this purpose we prove a vanishing theorem for the extension groups of a certain logarithmic $D_X$--module with $O_X$. The logarithmic $D_X$--module is naturally asso…
We use filtered log-$\mathscr{D}$-modules to represent the (dual) localization of Saito's Mixed Hodge Modules along a smooth hypersurface, and show that they also behave well under the direct image functor and the dual functor in the derived category of filtered log-$\mathscr{D}$-modules. The results of this paper can be used to generalize the result of M. Popa and C. Schnell about Kodaira dimension and zeros of holomorphic one-forms into the log setting.
We describe mirror symmetry for weak toric Fano manifolds as an equivalence of D-modules equipped with certain filtrations. We discuss in particular the logarithmic degeneration behavior at the large radius limit point, and express the mirror correspondence as an isomorphism of Frobenius manifolds with logarithmic poles. The main tool is an identification of the Gauss-Manin system of the mirror Landau-Ginzburg model with a hypergeometric D-module, and a detailed study of a natural filtration defined on this differential system. We obtain a solution of the Birkhoff problem for lattices defined …
The purpose of this paper is to investigate properties of the minimal free resolution of the modules of multi-logarithmic forms along a reduced equidimensional subspace. We first consider a notion of freeness for reduced complete intersections, and more generally for reduced equidimensional subspaces embedded in a smooth manifold, which generalizes the notion of Saito free divisors. The first main result is a characterization of freeness in terms of the projective dimension of the module of multi-logarithmic k -forms, where k is the codimension. We also prove that there is a perfect pairing be…
We introduce a new definition of a generalized logarithmic module of multiarrangements by uniting those of the logarithmic derivation and the differential modules. This module is realized as a logarithmic derivation module of an arrangement of hyperplanes with a multiplicity consisting of both positive and negative integers. We consider several properties of this module including Saito's criterion and reflexivity. As applications, we prove a shift isomorphism and duality of some Coxeter multiarrangements by using the primitive derivation.
We prove a duality formula for two ${\cal D}$-modules arising from logarithmic derivations w.r.t. a plane curve. As an application we give a differential proof of a logarithmic comparison theorem of Calderón-Mond-Narváez-Castro.
For an essential, central hyperplane arrangement A in V=k^{n+1}, we show that Ω^1(A) (the module of logarithmic one forms with poles along A) gives rise to a locally free sheaf on P^n if and only if for all X in L_A with rank X<dim V, the module Ω^1(A_X) is free. Our main result is that in this case the Poicare polynomial of A is essentially the Chern polynomial. The proof is based on a result of Solomon and Terao and on a formula we give for the Chern polynomial of a bundle E on P^n in terms of the Hilbert series of \oplus_m H^0(\wedge^iE(m)). If Ω^1(A)has projective dimension one and is loca…
Given a morphism $X \to S$ of log schemes of characteristic $p > 0$ and a lifting of $X'$ over $S$ modulo $p^2$, we use Lorenzon's indexed algebras $A_X^{gp}$ and $B_{X/S}$ to construct an equivalence between $O_X$-modules with nilpotent integrable connection and indexed $B_{X/S}$-modules with nilpotent $B_{X/S}$-linear Higgs field. If either satisfies a stricter nilpotence condition, we find an isomorphism between the de Rham cohomology of the connection and the Higgs cohomology of the Higgs field.
We prove a structure theorem for the differential operator in the 0-term of the ${\cal V}$-filtration with respect to a free divisor. Using this theorem, we give a formula for the logarithmic de Rham complex in terms of ${\cal V}_0$-modules. We also give a sufficient condition for perversity of the logarithmic de Rham complex.
Let X be a complex analytic manifold and D \subset X a free divisor. Integrable logarithmic connections along D can be seen as locally free {\cal O}_X-modules endowed with a (left) module structure over the ring of logarithmic differential operators {\cal D}_X(\log D). In this paper we study two related results: the relationship between the duals of any integrable logarithmic connection over the base rings {\cal D}_X and {\cal D}_X(\log D), and a differential criterion for the logarithmic comparison theorem. We also generalize a formula of Esnault-Viehweg in the normal crossing case for the Ve…
In this paper we survey the role of D-module theory in the comparison between logarithmic and meromorphic de Rham complexes of integrable logarithmic connections with respect to free divisors, and we present some new linearity conditions on the Jacobian ideal which arise in this setting.
In this paper we study the comparison between the logarithmic and the meromorphic de Rham complexes along a divisor in a complex manifold. We focus on the case of free divisors, starting with the case of locally quasihomogeneous divisors, and we explain how D-module theory can be used for this comparison.
Kyoji Saito's notion of a free divisor was generalized by the first author to reduced Gorenstein spaces and by Delphine Pol to reduced Cohen-Macaulay spaces. Starting point is the Aleksandrov-Terao theorem: A hypersurface is free if and only if its Jacobian ideal is maximal Cohen-Macaulay. Pol obtains a generalized Jacobian ideal as a cokernel by dualizing Aleksandrov's multi-logarithmic residue sequence. Notably it is essentially a suitably chosen complete intersection ideal that is used for dualizing. Pol shows that this generalized Jacobian ideal is maximal Cohen-Macaulay if and only if the…
For a germ $f$ on a complex manifold $X$, we introduce a complex derived from the Liouville form acting on logarithmic differential forms, and give an exactness criterion. We use this Liouville complex to connect properties of the $D$-module generated by $f^s$ to homological data of the Jacobian ideal; specifically we show that for a large class of germs the annihilator of $f^s$ is generated by derivations. Through local cohomology, we connect the cohomology of the Milnor fiber to the Jacobian module via logarithmic differentials. In particular, we consider (not necessarily reduced) hyperplane…
We obtain several new characterizations of splayedness for divisors: a Leibniz property for ideals of singularity subschemes, the vanishing of a `splayedness' module, and the requirements that certain natural morphisms of modules and sheaves of logarithmic derivations and logarithmic differentials be isomorphisms. We also consider the effect of splayedness on the Chern classes of sheaves of differential forms with logarithmic poles along splayed divisors, as well as on the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of the complements of these divisors. A postulated relation between these different noti…
The geometric motivic Poincaré series of a variety, which was introduced by Denef and Loeser, takes into account the classes in the Grothendieck ring of the sequence of jets of arcs in the variety. Denef and Loeser proved that this series has a rational form. We describe it in the case of an affine toric variety of arbitrary dimension. The result, which provides an explicit set of candidate poles, is expressed in terms of the sequence of Newton polyhedra of certain monomial ideals, which we call logarithmic jacobian ideals, associated to the modules of differential forms with logarithmic poles…
In this paper, we investigate representations of $\operatorname{At}(N)$, the Atiyah algebroids of a holomorphic line bundles $N$ over a complex manifold $Y$. In particular, we relate $\operatorname{At}(N)$-modules with logarithmic connections through two functors. On the one hand, we use these functors to the define invariants (monodromy) for representations of Atiyah algebroids. On the other hand, this opens the way to use the theory of Lie algebroids to study problems about logarithmic connections; we will give an example of this by showing that the existence of Deligne's extensions of flat …
We show that the arithmetic D-module associated to an overconvergent F-isocrystal over a smooth curve is holonomic. We first prove that unipotent F-isocrystals are holonomic D-module by using the fact that such F-isocrystals come from logarithmic F-isocrystals. We deduce the general case from the semi-stable theorem for F-isocrystals over curves of Matsuda-Trihan which relies on the p-adic monodromy theorem independently proved by André, Kedlaya and Mebkhout. The main result has already been proved by D. Caro.
Let $X$ be a complex analytic manifold, $D\subset X$ a locally quasi-homogeneous free divisor, $E$ an integrable logarithmic connection with respect to $D$ and $L$ the local system of the horizontal sections of $E$ on $X-D$. In this paper we give an algebraic description in terms of $E$ of the regular holonomic D-module whose de Rham complex is the intersection complex associated with $L$. As an application, we perform some effective computations in the case of quasi-homogeneous plane curves.
This primarily expository article collects together some facts from the literature about the monodromy of differential equations on a p-adic (rigid analytic) annulus, though often with simpler proofs. These include Matsuda's classification of quasi-unipotent nabla-modules, the Christol-Mebkhout construction of the ramification filtration, and the Christol-Dwork Frobenius antecedent theorem. We also briefly discuss the p-adic local monodromy theorem without proof.
Let $W$ be a finite irreducible real reflection group, which is a Coxeter group. We explicitly construct a basis for the module of differential 1-forms with logarithmic poles along the Coxeter arrangement by using a primitive derivation. As a consequence, we extend the Hodge filtration, indexed by nonnegative integers, into a filtration indexed by all integers. This filtration coincides with the filtration by the order of poles. The results are translated into the derivation case.
Let W be a finite group generated by unitary reflections and A be the set of reflecting hyperplanes. We will give a characterization of the logarithmic differential forms with poles along A in terms of anti-invariant differential forms. If W is a Coxeter group defined over the real numbers, then the characterization provides a new method to find a basis for the module of logarithmic differential forms out of basic invariants.
In this article, we prove that a free divisor in a three dimensional complex manifold must be Euler homogeneous in a strong sense if the cohomology of its complement is the hypercohomology of its logarithmic differential forms. F.J. Calderon-Moreno et al. conjectured this implication in all dimensions and proved it in dimension two. We prove a theorem which describes in all dimensions a special minimal system of generators for the module of formal logarithmic vector fields. This formal structure theorem is closely related to the formal decomposition of a vector field by Kyoji Saito and is used…
A complex hypersurface D in complex affine n-space C^n is a linear free divisor (LFD) if its module of logarithmic vector fields has a global basis of linear vector fields. We classify all LFDs for n at most 4. Analogous to Grothendieck's comparison theorem, we say that the global logarithmic comparison theorem (GLCT) holds for D if the complex of global logarithmic differential forms computes the complex cohomology of the complement of D in C^n. We develop a general criterion for the GLCT for LFDs and prove that it is fulfilled whenever the Lie algebra of linear logarithmic vector fields is r…
We construct a monomorphism of the De Rham complex of scalar multivalued meromorphic forms on the projective line, holomorphic on the complement to a finite set of points, to the chain complex of the Lie algebra of $sl_2$-valued algebraic functions on the same complement with coefficients in a tensor product of contragradient Verma modules over the affine Lie algebra $\hat{sl}_2$. We show that the existence of singular vectors in the Verma modules (the Malikov-Feigin-Fuchs singular vectors) is reflected in the new relations between the cohomology classes of logarithmic differential forms.
