We exhibit rigid rotations of spheres as distortion elements in groups of diffeomorphisms, thereby answering a question of J Franks and M Handel. We also show that every homeomorphism of a sphere is, in a suitable sense, as distorted as possible in the group Homeo(S^n), thought of as a discrete group.
An appendix by Y de Cornulier shows that Homeo(S^n) has the strong boundedness property, recently introduced by G Bergman. This means that every action of the discrete group Homeo(S^n) on a metric space by isometries has bounded orbits.
We discuss boundedness and distortion in transformation groups. We show that the groups $\mathrm{Diff}^r_0(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $\mathrm{Diff}^r(\mathbb{R}^n)$ have the strong distortion property, whenever $0 \leq r \leq \infty, r \neq n+1$. This implies in particular that every abstract length function on these groups is bounded. With related techniques we show that, for $M$ a closed manifold or homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold with boundary, the groups $\mathrm{Diff}_0^r(M)$ satisfy a relative Higman embedding type property, introduced by Schreier. This answers a problem aske…
In this paper, we study distortion in the group $\mathcal A$ of Affine Interval Exchange Transformations (AIET). We prove that any distorted element $f$ of $\mathcal A$, has an iterate $f^ k$ that is conjugate by an element of $\mathcal A$ to a product of infinite order restricted rotations, with pairwise disjoint supports. As consequences we prove that no Baumslag-Solitar group, $BS(m,n)$ with $\vert m \vert \neq \vert n \vert$, acts faithfully by elements of $\mathcal A$, every finitely generated nilpotent group of $\mathcal A$ is virtually abelian and there is no distortion element in $\mat…
For a linear transformation A from Rn to Rn, we give sharp bounds for the average distortion of A, that is, the average value of log of the euclidean norm of Au over all unit vectors u. This is closely related to the results of the author's paper math.DS/0312048.
In this article, we study the smooth mapping class group of a surface S relative to a given Cantor set, that is the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving smooth diffeomorphisms of S which preserve this Cantor set. When the Cantor set is the standard ternary Cantor set, we prove that the subgroup consisting of diffeomorphisms which are isotopic to the identity on S does not contain any distorted elements. Moreover, we prove a weak Tits alternative for these groups.
Let X be a path-connected topological space admitting a universal cover. Let Homeo(X,a) denote the group of homeomorphisms of X preserving degree one cohomology class a. We investigate the distortion in Homeo(X,a). Let g be an element of Homeo(X,a). We define a Nielsen-type equivalence relation on the space of g-invariant Borel probability measures on X and prove that if a homeomorphism g admits two nonequivalent invariant measures then it is undistorted. We also define a local rotation number of a homeomorphism generalising the notion of the rotation of a homeomorphism of the circle. Then we …
We prove that every distortion element in the group of diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere which has some recurrent point that is not fixed is an irrational pseudo-rotation. Moreover we prove that the differential of a distortion element in the group of diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere having at least three fixed points at a fixed point has a unique eigenvalue which is 1.
Let $G$ be the group ${\rm PAff}_+({\bf S}^1)$ of piecewise--affine circle homeomorphisms or the group ${\Diff}^{\infty}(\mathbb R/\mathbb Z)$ of smooth circle diffeomorphisms. A constructive proof that all irrational rotations are distorted in $G$ is given.
The set of automorphisms of a one-dimensional \shift $(X, σ)$ forms a countable, but often very complicated, group. For zero entropy shifts, it has recently been shown that the automorphism group is more tame. We provide the first examples of countable groups that cannot embed into the automorphism group of any zero entropy \shiftno. In particular, we show that the Baumslag-Solitar groups ${\rm BS}(1,n)$ and all other groups that contain exponentially distorted elements cannot embed into ${\rm Aut}(X)$ when $h_{\rm top}(X)=0$. We further show that distortion in nilpotent groups gives a nontriv…
We initiate a study of distortion elements in the Polish groups $\mbox{Diff}_+^k(\mathbb{S}^1)$ ($1\leq k<\infty$), as well as $\mbox{Diff}_+^{1+AC}(\mathbb{S}^1)$, in terms of maximal metrics on these groups. We classify distortion in the $k=1$ case: a $C^1$ circle diffeomorphism is $C^1$-undistorted if and only if it has a hyperbolic periodic point. On the other hand, answering a question of Navas, we exhibit analytic circle diffeomorphisms with only non-hyperbolic fixed points which are $C^{1+AC}$-undistorted, and hence $C^k$-undistorted for all $k\geq 2$. In the appendix, we exhibit a maxi…
We consider the group of smooth diffeomorphisms of the circle. We show that any recurrent $f$ (in the sense that $\{f^n\}_{n \in Z}$ is not discrete) is in fact a distortion element (in the sense that its iterates can be written as short compositions involving finitely many smooth diffeomorphisms). Thus rotations are distortion elements.
If $\G$ is a finitely generated group with generators $\{g_1,...,g_j\}$ then an infinite order element $f \in \G$ is a {\em distortion element} of $\G$ provided $\displaystyle{\liminf_{n \to \infty} |f^n|/n = 0,}$ where $|f^n|$ is the word length of $f^n$ in the generators. Let $S$ be a closed orientable surface and let $\Diff(S)_0$ denote the identity component of the group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of $S$. Our main result shows that if $S$ has genus at least two and if $f$ is a distortion element in some finitely generated subgroup of $\Diff(S)_0$, then $\supp(μ) \subset \Fix(f)$ for every $f…
We give a description of the group of all quasisymmetric self-maps of the Julia set of $f(z)=z^2-1$ that have orientation preserving homeomorphic extensions to the whole plane. More precisely, we prove that this group is the uniform closure of the group generated by the Thompson group of the unit circle and an inversion. Moreover, this result is quantitative in the sense that distortions of the approximating maps are uniformly controlled by the distortion of the given map.
In the present paper we study two sequences of real numbers associated to a symplectic diffeomorphism: the uniform norm of the differential of its n-th iteration and the word length of its n-th iteration. In the latter case we assume that our diffeomorphism lies in a finitely generated group of symplectic diffeomorphisms. We find lower bounds on the growth rates of these sequences in a number of situations. These bounds depend on the symplectic geometry of the manifold rather than on the specific choice of a diffeomorphism. They are obtained by using recent results of Schwarz on Floer homology…
In these lectures we consider how algebraic properties of discrete subgroups of Lie groups restrict the possible actions of those groups on surfaces. The results show a strong parallel between the possible actions of such a group on the circle $S^1$ and the measure preserving actions on surfaces. Our aim is the study of the (non)-existence of actions of lattices in a large class of non-compact Lie groups on surfaces. A definitive analysis of the analogous question for actions on $S^1$ was carried out by É. Ghys. Our approach is topological and insofar as possible we try to isolate properties o…
Let S be a compact orientable surface and f be an element of the group Homeo_{0}(S) of homeomorphisms of S isotopic to the identity. Denote by F a lift of f to the universal cover of S. In this article, the following result is proved: if there exists a fundamental domain D of the universal cover of S such that the sequence (d_{n}log(d_{n})/n) converges to 0 where d_{n} is the diameter of F^{n}(D), then the homeomorphism f is a distortion element of the group Homeo_{0}(S).
If $G$ is a finitely generated group with generators $\{g_1,..., g_s\}$, we say an infinite-order element $f \in G$ is a distortion element of $G$ provided that $\displaystyle \liminf_{n \to \infty} \frac{|f^n|}{n} = 0$, where $|f^n|$ is the word length of $f^n$ with respect to the given generators. Let $S$ be a compact orientable surface, possibly with boundary, and let $\Diff(S)_0$ denote the identity component of the group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of $S$. Our main result is that if $S$ has genus at least two, and $f$ is a distortion element in some finitely generated subgroup of $\Diff(S)_0…
Let S be a compact connected surface and let f be an element of the group Homeo\_0(S) of homeomorphisms of S isotopic to the identity. Denote by \tilde{f} a lift of f to the universal cover of S. Fix a fundamental domain D of this universal cover. The homeomorphism f is said to be non-spreading if the sequence (d\_{n}/n) converges to 0, where d\_{n} is the diameter of \tilde{f}^{n}(D). Let us suppose now that the surface S is orientable with a nonempty boundary. We prove that, if S is different from the annulus and from the disc, a homeomorphism is non-spreading if and only if it has conjugate…
Let (G,X) be a locally compact transformation group, in which G acts freely on X. We show that the associated transformation-group C^*-algebra is a Fell algebra if and only if X is a Cartan G-space.
