If $\G$ is a finitely generated group with generators $\{g_1,...,g_j\}$ then an infinite order element $f \in \G$ is a {\em distortion element} of $\G$ provided $\displaystyle{\liminf_{n \to \infty} |f^n|/n = 0,}$ where $|f^n|$ is the word length of $f^n$ in the generators. Let $S$ be a closed orientable surface and let $\Diff(S)_0$ denote the identity component of the group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of $S$. Our main result shows that if $S$ has genus at least two and if $f$ is a distortion element in some finitely generated subgroup of $\Diff(S)_0$, then $\supp(μ) \subset \Fix(f)$ for every $f$-invariant Borel probability measure $μ$. Related results are proved for $S = T^2$ or $S^2$.
For $μ$ a Borel probability measure on $S$, denote the group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms that preserve $μ$ by $\Diff_μ(S)$. We give several applications of our main result showing that certain groups, including a large class of higher rank lattices, admit no homomorphisms to $\Diff_μ(S)$ with infinite image.
We study the connection between the Lyapunov exponents and the volume growth of boundary distortion of regions in the phase space of the dynamical system.
We prove that every distortion element in the group of diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere which has some recurrent point that is not fixed is an irrational pseudo-rotation. Moreover we prove that the differential of a distortion element in the group of diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere having at least three fixed points at a fixed point has a unique eigenvalue which is 1.
Let S be a compact orientable surface and f be an element of the group Homeo_{0}(S) of homeomorphisms of S isotopic to the identity. Denote by F a lift of f to the universal cover of S. In this article, the following result is proved: if there exists a fundamental domain D of the universal cover of S such that the sequence (d_{n}log(d_{n})/n) converges to 0 where d_{n} is the diameter of F^{n}(D), then the homeomorphism f is a distortion element of the group Homeo_{0}(S).
We consider the group of smooth diffeomorphisms of the circle. We show that any recurrent $f$ (in the sense that $\{f^n\}_{n \in Z}$ is not discrete) is in fact a distortion element (in the sense that its iterates can be written as short compositions involving finitely many smooth diffeomorphisms). Thus rotations are distortion elements.
In these lectures we consider how algebraic properties of discrete subgroups of Lie groups restrict the possible actions of those groups on surfaces. The results show a strong parallel between the possible actions of such a group on the circle $S^1$ and the measure preserving actions on surfaces. Our aim is the study of the (non)-existence of actions of lattices in a large class of non-compact Lie groups on surfaces. A definitive analysis of the analogous question for actions on $S^1$ was carried out by É. Ghys. Our approach is topological and insofar as possible we try to isolate properties o…
In this paper, we study distortion in the group $\mathcal A$ of Affine Interval Exchange Transformations (AIET). We prove that any distorted element $f$ of $\mathcal A$, has an iterate $f^ k$ that is conjugate by an element of $\mathcal A$ to a product of infinite order restricted rotations, with pairwise disjoint supports. As consequences we prove that no Baumslag-Solitar group, $BS(m,n)$ with $\vert m \vert \neq \vert n \vert$, acts faithfully by elements of $\mathcal A$, every finitely generated nilpotent group of $\mathcal A$ is virtually abelian and there is no distortion element in $\mat…
Let S be a compact connected surface and let f be an element of the group Homeo\_0(S) of homeomorphisms of S isotopic to the identity. Denote by \tilde{f} a lift of f to the universal cover of S. Fix a fundamental domain D of this universal cover. The homeomorphism f is said to be non-spreading if the sequence (d\_{n}/n) converges to 0, where d\_{n} is the diameter of \tilde{f}^{n}(D). Let us suppose now that the surface S is orientable with a nonempty boundary. We prove that, if S is different from the annulus and from the disc, a homeomorphism is non-spreading if and only if it has conjugate…
If $G$ is a finitely generated group with generators $\{g_1,..., g_s\}$, we say an infinite-order element $f \in G$ is a distortion element of $G$ provided that $\displaystyle \liminf_{n \to \infty} \frac{|f^n|}{n} = 0$, where $|f^n|$ is the word length of $f^n$ with respect to the given generators. Let $S$ be a compact orientable surface, possibly with boundary, and let $\Diff(S)_0$ denote the identity component of the group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of $S$. Our main result is that if $S$ has genus at least two, and $f$ is a distortion element in some finitely generated subgroup of $\Diff(S)_0…
The set of automorphisms of a one-dimensional \shift $(X, σ)$ forms a countable, but often very complicated, group. For zero entropy shifts, it has recently been shown that the automorphism group is more tame. We provide the first examples of countable groups that cannot embed into the automorphism group of any zero entropy \shiftno. In particular, we show that the Baumslag-Solitar groups ${\rm BS}(1,n)$ and all other groups that contain exponentially distorted elements cannot embed into ${\rm Aut}(X)$ when $h_{\rm top}(X)=0$. We further show that distortion in nilpotent groups gives a nontriv…
Any compact surface supports a continuous action of the orientation preserving affine group of the real line which is fixed point free (Lima and Plante). It is generally admitted that this action can be taken smooth although it is not easy finding references for it. Here one gives a such action.
The goal of this paper is to study ergodic and rigidity properties of smooth actions of the discrete Heisenberg group $\H$. We establish the decomposition of the tangent space of any $C^\infty$ compact Riemannian manifold $M$ for Lyapunov exponents, and show that all Lyapunov exponents for the center elements are zero. We obtain that if an $\H$ group action contains an Anosov element, then under certain conditions on the element, the center elements are of finite order. In particular there is no faithful codimensional one Anosov Heisenberg group action on any manifolds, and no faithful codimen…
We initiate a study of distortion elements in the Polish groups $\mbox{Diff}_+^k(\mathbb{S}^1)$ ($1\leq k<\infty$), as well as $\mbox{Diff}_+^{1+AC}(\mathbb{S}^1)$, in terms of maximal metrics on these groups. We classify distortion in the $k=1$ case: a $C^1$ circle diffeomorphism is $C^1$-undistorted if and only if it has a hyperbolic periodic point. On the other hand, answering a question of Navas, we exhibit analytic circle diffeomorphisms with only non-hyperbolic fixed points which are $C^{1+AC}$-undistorted, and hence $C^k$-undistorted for all $k\geq 2$. In the appendix, we exhibit a maxi…
We exhibit rigid rotations of spheres as distortion elements in groups of diffeomorphisms, thereby answering a question of J Franks and M Handel. We also show that every homeomorphism of a sphere is, in a suitable sense, as distorted as possible in the group Homeo(S^n), thought of as a discrete group. An appendix by Y de Cornulier shows that Homeo(S^n) has the strong boundedness property, recently introduced by G Bergman. This means that every action of the discrete group Homeo(S^n) on a metric space by isometries has bounded orbits.
In this article, we study the smooth mapping class group of a surface S relative to a given Cantor set, that is the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving smooth diffeomorphisms of S which preserve this Cantor set. When the Cantor set is the standard ternary Cantor set, we prove that the subgroup consisting of diffeomorphisms which are isotopic to the identity on S does not contain any distorted elements. Moreover, we prove a weak Tits alternative for these groups.
We prove that a countable group with an effective minimal non-elementary convergence group action is a Powers group. More strongly we prove that it is a strongly Powers group and thus its non-trivial subnormal subgroups are $C^*$-simple.
Let X be a path-connected topological space admitting a universal cover. Let Homeo(X,a) denote the group of homeomorphisms of X preserving degree one cohomology class a. We investigate the distortion in Homeo(X,a). Let g be an element of Homeo(X,a). We define a Nielsen-type equivalence relation on the space of g-invariant Borel probability measures on X and prove that if a homeomorphism g admits two nonequivalent invariant measures then it is undistorted. We also define a local rotation number of a homeomorphism generalising the notion of the rotation of a homeomorphism of the circle. Then we …
Let $M_1$ and $M_2$ be two $n$-dimensional smooth manifolds with boundary. Suppose we glue $M_1$ and $M_2$ along some boundary components (which are, therefore, diffeomorphic). Call the result $N.$ If we have a group $G$ acting continuously on $M_1,$ and also acting continuously on $M_2,$ such that the actions are compatible on glued boundary components, then we get a continuous action of $G$ on $N$ that stitches the two actions together. However, even if the actions on $M_1$ and $M_2$ are smooth, the action on $N$ probably will not be smooth. We give a systematic way of smoothing out the glue…
We show that under certain simple assumptions on the topology (structure) of networks of strongly interacting chaotic elements a phenomenon of long range action takes place, namely that the asymptotic (as time goes to infinity) dynamics of an arbitrary large network is completely determined by its boundary conditions. This phenomenon takes place under very mild and robust assumptions on local dynamics with short range interactions. However, we show that it is unstable with respect to arbitrarily weak local random perturbations.
