We use twisted stable maps to answer the following question. Let E\subset P^2 be a smooth cubic. How many rational degree d curves pass through a general points of E, have b specified tangencies with E and c unspecified tangencies, and pass through 3d-1-a-2b-c general points of P^2? The answer is given as a generalization of Kontsevich's recursion. We also investigate more general enumerative problems of this sort, and prove an analogue of a formula of Caporaso and Harris.
We construct the algebraic cobordism theory of bundles and divisors on smooth varieties. It has a simple basis (over Q) from projective spaces and its rank is equal to the number of Chern invariants. As an application we study the number of singular subvarieties satisfying given tangent conditions with a fixed smooth divisor, where the subvariety is the zero locus of a section of a vector bundle. We prove that the generating series gives a homomorphism from the algebraic cobordism group to the power series ring. This implies that the number of singular subvarieties with tangency conditions is …
In this paper we prove the algebraic-tropical correspondence for stable maps of rational curves with marked points to toric varieties such that the marked points are mapped to given orbits in the big torus and in the boundary divisor, the map has prescribed tangency to the boundary divisor, and certain quadruples of marked points have prescribed cross-ratios. In particular, our results generalize the results of Nishinou and Siebert. The proof is very short, involves only the standard theory of schemes, and works in arbitrary characteristic (including the mixed characteristic case).
The invariance of the Welschinger numbers for real unnodal Del Pezzo surfaces, which we used for the enumeration of real rational curves on real toric Del Pezzo surfaces (see math.AG/0303378 and IMRN 49 (2003), 2639-2653), follows from J.-Y. Welschinger's theorem stated and proved in a symplectic setting (math.AG/0303145 and CRAS, Ser. I, 336 (2003), 341-344). Here, we give an algebraic geometry version of the proof of the above invariance.
Welschinger's invariant bounds from below the number of real rational curves through a given generic collection of real points in the real projective plane. We estimate this invariant using Mikhalkin's approach which deals with a corresponding count of tropical curves. In particular, our estimate implies that, for any positive integer $d$, there exists a real rational curve of degree $d$ through any collection of $3d-1$ real points in the projective plane, and, moreover, asymptotically in the logarithmic scale at least one third of the complex plane rational curves through a generic point coll…
We use stable maps, and their stable lifts to the Semple bundle variety of second-order curvilinear data, to calculate certain characteristic numbers for rational plane curves. These characteristic numbers involve first-order (tangency) and second-order (inflectional) conditions. Although they may be virtual, they may be used as inputs in an enumeratively significant formula for the number of rational curves having a triple contact with a specified plane curve and passing through 3d-3 general points.
We give a formula computing the number of one-nodal rational curves that pass through an appropriate collection of constraints in a complex projective space. We combine the methods and results from three different papers.
On a space of stable maps, the psi classes are modified by subtracting certain boundary divisors. The top products of modified psi classes, usual psi classes, and classes pulled back along the evaluation maps are called twisted descendants; it is shown that in genus 0, they admit a complete recursion and are determined by the Gromov-Witten invariants. One motivation for this construction is that all characteristic numbers (of rational curves) can be interpreted as twisted descendants; this is explained in the second part, using pointed tangency classes. As an example, some of Schubert's number…
We answer some enumerative questions about irreducible rational curves on Hirzebruch surfaces, by combining an idea of Kontsevich with the study of the geometry of certain natural parameter spaces. Our formulas generalize Kontsevich's formula for rational plane curves of given degree.
Choosing a normal crossings anticanonical divisor of $\mathbb{P}^2$ leads to four log Calabi-Yau surfaces, three of which are Looijenga pairs. In this survey article, I describe how to count rational curves in these that intersect each component of the divisor in one point of maximal tangency.
We study the following question: given a set P of 3d-2 points and an immersed curve G in the real plane R^2, all in general position, how many real rational plane curves of degree d pass through these points and are tangent to this curve. We count each such curve with a certain sign, and present an explicit formula for their algebraic number. This number is preserved under small regular homotopies of a pair (P, G), but jumps (in a well-controlled way) when in the process of homotopy we pass a certain singular discriminant. We discuss the relation of such enumerative problems with finite type i…
We identify certain Gromov-Witten invariants counting rational curves with given incidence and tangency conditions with the Betti numbers of moduli spaces of point configurations in projective spaces. On the Gromov-Witten side, S. Fomin and G. Mikhalkin established a recurrence relation via tropicalization, which is realized on the moduli space side using Donaldson-Thomas invariants of subspace quivers.
Enumerating ramified coverings of the sphere with fixed ramification types is a well-known problem first considered by A. Hurwitz. Up to now, explicit solutions have been obtained only for some families of ramified coverings, for instant, those realized by polynomials in one complex variable. In this paper we obtain an explicit answer for a large new family of coverings, namely, the coverings realized by simple almost polynomials, defined below. Unlike most other results in the field, our formula is obtained by elementary methods.
One distinguishing feature of rational curves is that they have algebraic parameterizations. Arc spaces are a way of describing approximations to parameterizations of all curves in some fixed space. Playing on these descriptions, this paper introduces rationally generated arcs, and applies them towards the description and enumeration of rational curves in algebraic varieties.
For each $1\leq n\leq6$ we present formulas for the number of $n-$nodal curves in an $n-$dimensional linear system on a smooth, projective surface. This yields in particular the numbers of rational curves in the system of hyperplane sections of a generic $K3-$surface imbedded in \p{n} by a complete system of curves of genus $n$ as well as the number {\bf17,601,000} of rational ({\em singular}) plane quintic curves in a generic quintic threefold.
We give a practical formula for counting irreducible nodal genus-three plane curves that a fixed generic complex structure on the normalization. As an intermediate step, we enumerate rational plane curves that have a $(3,4)$-cusp.
We introduce enumerative invariants of real del Pezzo surfaces that count real rational curves belonging to a given divisor class, passing through a generic conjugation-invariant configuration of points and satisfying preassigned tangency conditions to given smooth arcs centered at the fixed points. The counted curves are equipped with Welschinger-type signs. We prove that such a count does not depend neither on the choice of the point-arc configuration, nor on the variation of the ambient real surface. These invariants can be regarded as a real counterpart of (complex) descendant invariants.
This paper contains an attempt to formulate rigorously and to check predictions in enumerative geometry of curves following from Mirror Symmetry. The main tool is a new notion of stable map. We give an outline of a contsruction of Gromov-Witten invariants for all algebraic projective or closed symplectic manifolds. Mirror Symmetry in the basic example of rational curves on a quintic 3-folds is reduced to certain complicated but explicit identity. The strategy of computations can be described as follows: 1) we reduce counting problems to questions concerning Chern classes on spaces of curves on…
We solve the problem of counting elliptic curves with fixed j-invariant in projective space with tangency conditions. This is equivalent to couting rational nodal curves with condition on the node of the image. The solution is given in the form of effective recursions. We give explicit formulas when the dimension of the ambient projective space is at most 5. Many numerical examples are provided. A C++ program implementing most of the recursions is available on the author's webpage (see \cite{dn}).
We address the problem of existence of refined (i.e., depending on a formal parameter) tropical enumerative invariants, and we present two new examples of a refined count of rational marked tropical curves. One of the new invariants counts plane rational tropical curves with an unmarked vertex of arbitrary valency. It was motivated by the tropical enumeration of plane cuspidal tropical curves given by Y. Ganor and the author, which naturally led to consideration of plane tropical curves with an unmarked four-valent vertex. Another refined invariant counts rational tropical curves of a given de…
The theory of Q-Cartier divisors on the space of n-pointed, genus 0, stable maps to projective space is considered. Generators and Picard numbers are computed. A recursive algorithm computing all top intersection products of Q-Divisors is established. As a corollary, an algorithm computing all characteristic numbers of rational curves in P^r is proven (including simple tangency conditions). Computations of these characteristic numbers are carried out in many examples. The degree of the 1-cuspidal rational locus in the linear system of degree d plane curves is explicitly evaluated.
We generalize a formula due to Macdonald that relates the singular Betti numbers of $X^{n}/G$ to those of $X$, where $X$ is a compact manifold and $G$ is any subgroup of the symmetric group $S_{n}$ acting on $X^{n}$ by permuting coordinates. Our result is completely axiomatic: in a general setting, given an endomorphism on the cohomology $H^{\bullet}(X)$, it explains how we can explicitly relate the Lefschetz series of the induced endomorphism on $H^{\bullet}(X^{n})^{G}$ to that of the given endomorphism on $H^{\bullet}(X)$ in the presence of the Künneth formula with respect to a cup product. …
We establish a homology relation for the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces of real curves which lifts to a WDVV-type relation for real Gromov-Witten invariants of real symplectic manifolds; we also obtain a vanishing theorem for these invariants. For many real symplectic manifolds, these results reduce all genus 0 real invariants with conjugate pairs of constraints to genus 0 invariants with a single conjugate pair of constraints. In particular, we give a complete recursion for counts of real rational curves in odd-dimensional projective spaces with conjugate pairs of constraints and specify all c…
We compute the Gromov-Witten invariants of the projective plane blown up in r general points. These are determined by associativity from r+1 intial values. Applications are given to the enumeration of rational plane curves with prescribed multiplicities at fixed general points. We show that the numbers are enumerative if at least one of the prescribed multiplicities is 1 or 2. In particular, all the invariants for r<=8 (the Del Pezzo case) are enumerative.
We present an efficient deterministic algorithm which outputs exact expressions in terms of $n$ for the number of monic degree $n$ irreducible polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of characteristic $p$ for which the first $l < p$ coefficients are prescribed, provided that $n$ is coprime to $p$. Each of these counts is $\frac{1}{n}(q^{n-l} + \mathcal{O}(q^{n/2}))$. The main idea behind the algorithm is to associate to an equivalent problem a set of Artin-Schreier curves defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$ whose number of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-rational affine points must be combined. This is accomplished by c…
Floor diagrams are a class of weighted oriented graphs introduced by E. Brugalle and the second author. Tropical geometry arguments lead to combinatorial descriptions of (ordinary and relative) Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces in terms of floor diagrams and their generalizations. In a number of cases, these descriptions can be used to obtain explicit (direct or recursive) formulas for the corresponding enumerative invariants. In particular, we use this approach to enumerate rational curves of given degree passing through a collection of points on the complex plane and having maxim…
