This is the first in a series of papers that deals with duality statements such as Mukai-duality (T-duality, from algebraic geometry) and the Baum-Connes conjecture (from operator $K$-theory). These dualities are expressed in terms of categories of modules. In this paper, we develop a general framework needed to describe these dualities. In various geometric contexts, e.g. complex geometry, generalized complex geometry, and noncommutative geometry, the geometric structure is encoded in a certain differential graded algebra. We develop the module theory of such differential graded algebras in such a way that we can recover the derived category of coherent sheaves on a complex manifold. In this paper and ones to follow we apply this to stating and proving the duality statements mentioned above. After developing the general framework, we look at a (complex) Lie algebroid $\A\to T_\cx X$. One can then consider our analogue of the derived category of coherent sheaves, integrable with respect to the Lie algebroid. We then establish a (Serre) duality theorem for "elliptic" Lie algebroids and for noncommutative tori.
We discuss a general duality principle, between noncommutative analogues of the standard cube $\mathbb Z_2^N$, and nonocommutative analogues of the standard sphere $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$. This duality is by construction of algebraic geometric nature, and conjecturally connects the corresponding quantum isometry groups, taken in an affine sense.
This is the second in a series of papers intended to set up a framework to study categories of modules in the context of non-commutative geometries. In \cite{mem} we introduced the basic DG category $\Pc_{\A^\bullet}$, the perfect category of $\A^\bullet$, which corresponded to the category of coherent sheaves on a complex manifold. In this paper we enlarge this category to include objects which correspond to quasi-coherent sheaves. We then apply this framework to proving an equivalence of categories between derived categories on the noncommutative complex torus and on a holomorphic gerbe on t…
Topological T-duality is a transformation taking a gerbe on a principal torus bundle to a gerbe on a principal dual-torus bundle. We give a new geometric construction of T-dualization, which allows the duality to be extended in following two directions. First, bundles of groups other than tori, even bundles of some nonabelian groups, can be dualized. Second, bundles whose duals are families of noncommutative groups (in the sense of noncommutative geometry) can be treated, though in this case the base space of the bundles is best viewed as a topological stack. Some methods developed for the con…
Noncommutative near-group fusion categories were completely classified in the previous work of the first named author by using an operator algebraic method (and hence under the assumption of unitarity), and they were shown to be group theoretical though the corresponding pointed categories were not identified. In this note we give a purely algebraic construction of the noncommutative near-group fusion categories starting from pointed categories categorically Morita equivalent to them.
We construct explicitly noncommutative deformations of categories of holomorphic line bundles over higher dimensional tori. Our basic tools are Heisenberg modules over noncommutative tori and complex/holomorphic structures on them introduced by A. Schwarz. We obtain differential graded (DG) categories as full subcategories of curved DG categories of Heisenberg modules over the complex noncommutative tori. Also, we present the explicit composition formula of morphisms, which in fact depends on the noncommutativity.
In this survey article we discuss a framework of noncommutative geometry with differential graded categories as models for spaces. We outline a construction of the category of noncommutative spaces and also include a discussion on noncommutative motives. We propose a motivic measure with values in a motivic ring. This enables us to introduce certain zeta functions of noncommutative spaces.
A review of the applications of noncommutative geometry to a systematic formulation of duality symmetries in string theory is presented. The spectral triples associated with a lattice vertex operator algebra and the corresponding Dirac-Ramond operators are constructed and shown to naturally incorporate target space and discrete worldsheet dualities as isometries of the noncommutative space. The target space duality and diffeomorphism symmetries are shown to act as gauge transformations of the geometry. The connections with the noncommutative torus and Matrix Theory compactifications are also d…
After introducing a noncommutative counterpart of commutative algebraic geometry based on monoidal categories of quasi-coherent sheaves we show that various constructions in noncommutative geometry (e.g. Morita equivalences, Hopf-Galois extensions) can be given geometric meaning extending their geometric interpretations in the commutative case. On the other hand, we show that some constructions in commutative geometry (e.g. faithfully flat descent theory, principal fibrations, equivariant and infinitesimal geometry) can be interpreted as noncommutative geometric constructions applied to commut…
In this paper we study the category of standard holomorphic vector bundles on a noncommutative two-torus. We construct a functor from the derived category of such bundles to the derived category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic curve and prove that it induces an equivalence with the subcategory of stable objects. By the homological mirror symmetry for elliptic curves this implies an equivalence between the derived category of holomorphic bundles on a noncommutative two-torus and the Fukaya category of the corresponding symplectic (commutative) torus.
We show that Braun-Chuang-Lazarev's derived quotient prorepresents a naturally defined noncommutative derived deformation functor. Given a noncommutative partial resolution of a Gorenstein algebra, we show that the associated derived quotient controls part of its dg singularity category. We use a recent result of Hua and Keller to prove a recovery theorem, which can be thought of as providing a solution to a derived enhancement of a conjecture made by Donovan and Wemyss about the birational geometry of threefold flops.
We study gerbes with connection over an etale stack via noncommutative algebras of differential forms on a groupoid presenting the stack. We then describe a dg-category of modules over any such algebra, which we claim represents a dg-enhancement of the derived category of coherent analytic sheaves on the gerbe in question. This category can be used to phrase and prove Fourier-Mukai type dualities between gerbes and other noncommutative spaces. As an application of the theory, we show that a gerbe with flat connection on a torus is dual (in a sense analogous to Fourier-Mukai duality or T-dualit…
Blatter-Montgomery duality theorem is generalized into braided tensor categories. It is shown that $Hom(V,W)$ is a braided Yetter-Drinfeld module for any two braided Yetter-Drinfeld modules $V$ and $W$.
A noncommutative deformation of a quadric surface is usually described by a three-dimensional cubic Artin-Schelter regular algebra. In this paper we show that for such an algebra its bounded derived category embeds into the bounded derived category of a commutative deformation of the Hilbert scheme of two points on the quadric. This is the second example in support of a conjecture by Orlov. Based on this example, we formulate an infinitesimal version of the conjecture, and provide some evidence in the case of smooth projective surfaces.
We state and prove a general result establishing that T-duality simplifies the bulk-boundary correspondence, in the sense of converting it to a simple geometric restriction map. This settles in the affirmative several earlier conjectures of the authors, and provides a clear geometric picture of the correspondence. In particular, our result holds in arbitrary spatial dimension, in both the real and complex cases, and also in the presence of disorder, magnetic fields, and H-flux. These special cases are relevant both to String Theory and to the study of the quantum Hall effect and topological in…
We show how DG categories arise naturally in noncommutative differential geometry and use them to derive noncommutative analogues of the Bianchi identities for the curvature of a connection. We also give a derivation of formulae for characteristic classes in noncommutative geometry following Chern's original derivation, rather than using cyclic cohomology. We show that a related DG category for extendable bimodule connections is a monoidal tensor category and in the metric compatible case give an analogue of a classical antisymmetry of the Riemann tensor. The monoidal structure implies the exi…
We construct a new gauge theory on a pair of d-dimensional noncommutative tori. The latter comes from an intimate relationship between the noncommutative geometry associated with a lattice vertex operator algebra A and the noncommutative torus. We show that the (truncated) tachyon subalgebra of A is naturally isomorphic to a class of twisted modules representing quantum deformations of the algebra of functions on the torus. We construct the corresponding even real spectral triples and determine their Morita equivalence classes using string duality arguments. These constructions yield simple pr…
We investigate the noncommutative gauge theories arising on the worldvolumes of D-branes in non-geometric backgrounds obtained by T-duality from twisted tori. We revisit the low-energy effective description of D-branes on three-dimensional T-folds, examining both cases of parabolic and elliptic twists in detail. We give a detailed description of the decoupling limits and explore various physical consequences of the open string non-geometry. The T-duality monodromies of the non-geometric backgrounds lead to Morita duality monodromies of the noncommutative Yang-Mills theories induced on the D-br…
We examine the structure of spacetime symmetries of toroidally compactified string theory within the framework of noncommutative geometry. Following a proposal of Frohlich and Gawedzki, we describe the noncommutative string spacetime using a detailed algebraic construction of the vertex operator algebra. We show that the spacetime duality and discrete worldsheet symmetries of the string theory are a consequence of the existence of two independent Dirac operators, arising from the chiral structure of the conformal field theory. We demonstrate that these Dirac operators are also responsible for …
We give two proofs of a level-rank duality for braided fusion categories obtained from quantum groups of type $C$ at roots of unity. The first proof uses conformal embeddings, while the second uses a classification of braided fusion categories associated with quantum groups of type $C$ at roots of unity. In addition we give a similar result for non-unitary braided fusion categories quantum groups of types $B$ and $C$ at odd roots of unity.
The aim of these notes is to collect and motivate the basic localization toolbox for the geometric study of ``spaces'', locally described by noncommutative rings and their categories of one-sided modules. We present the basics of Ore localization of rings and modules in much detail. Common practical techniques are studied as well. We also describe a counterexample for a folklore test principle. Localization in negatively filtered rings arising in deformation theory is presented. A new notion of the differential Ore condition is introduced in the study of localization of differential calculi. T…
A noncommutative algebra of the complex $q$-twistors and their differentials is considered on the basis of the quantum $GL_q (4)\times SL_q (2)$ group. Real and pseudoreal $q$-twistors are discussed too. We consider the quantum-group self-duality equation in the framework of the local gauge algebra of differential forms on $q$-twistor spaces. Quantum deformations of the general multi-instanton solutions are constructed. The corresponding noncommutative algebras of moduli are introduced. The general $q$-instanton connection is a function of the $q$-twistors and the $q$-moduli .
For each finite semisimple tensor category, we associate a quantum group (face algebra) whose comodule category is equivalent to the original one, in a simple natural manner. To do this, we also give a generalization of the Tannaka-Krein duality, which assigns a face algebra for each tensor category equipped with an embedding into a certain kind of bimodule category.
