The confluent binomial posets with the atomic function A(n) = max (1,2^(n-2)) are classified. In particular, it is shown that in general there are non-isomorphic intervals of the same length.
In this paper we study finite Eulerian posets which are binomial, Sheffer or triangular. These important classes of posets are related to the theory of generating functions and to geometry. The results of this paper are organized as follows: We completely determine the structure of Eulerian binomial posets and, as a conclusion, we are able to classify factorial functions of Eulerian binomial posets; We give an almost complete classification of factorial functions of Eulerian Sheffer posets by dividing the original question into several cases; In most cases above, we completely determine the st…
We give a complete classification of the factorial functions of Eulerian binomial posets. The factorial function B(n) either coincides with $n!$, the factorial function of the infinite Boolean algebra, or $2^{n-1}$, the factorial function of the infinite butterfly poset. We also classify the factorial functions for Eulerian Sheffer posets. An Eulerian Sheffer poset with binomial factorial function $B(n) = n!$ has Sheffer factorial function D(n) identical to that of the infinite Boolean algebra, the infinite Boolean algebra with two new coatoms inserted, or the infinite cubical poset. Moreover,…
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the unimodality of a convolution of two sequences of binomial coefficients preceded by a finite number of ones. These convolution sequences arise as as rank sequences of posets of vertex-induced subtrees for a particular class of trees. The number of such trees whose poset of vertex-induced subgraphs containing the root is not rank unimodal is determined for a fixed number of vertices $i$.
We give a new $q$-$(1+q)$-analogue of the Gaussian coefficient, also known as the $q$-binomial which, like the original $q$-binomial $\genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{n}{k}_{q}$, is symmetric in $k$ and $n-k$. We show this $q$-$(1+q)$-binomial is more compact than the one discovered by Fu, Reiner, Stanton and Thiem. Underlying our $q$-$(1+q)$-analogue is a Boolean algebra decomposition of an associated poset. These ideas are extended to the Birkhoff transform of any finite poset. We end with a discussion of higher analogues of the $q$-binomial.
A poset is called upper homogeneous (or "upho") if every principal order filter of the poset is isomorphic to the whole poset. We observe that the rank and characteristic generating functions of upho posets are multiplicative inverses of one another.
Upper homogeneous finite type (upho) posets are a large class of partially ordered sets with the property that the principal order filter at every vertex is isomorphic to the whole poset. Well-known examples include k-array trees, the grid graphs, and the Stern poset. Very little is known about upho posets in general. In this paper, we construct upho posets with Schur-positive Ehrenborg quasisymmetric functions, whose rank-generating functions have rational poles and zeros. We also categorize the rank-generating functions of all planar upho posets. Finally, we prove the existence of an upho po…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for that the support $τ$-tilting poset of a finite dimensional algebra is isomorphic to the poset of symmetric group with weak order. Moreover we show that there are infinitely many finite dimensional algebras whose support $τ$-tilting posets are isomorphic to the poset of symmetric group with weak order.
Let $G$ be a graph on $[n]$ and $J_G$ be the binomial edge ideal of $G$ in the polynomial ring $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n,y_1,\ldots,y_n]$. In this paper we investigate some topological properties of a poset associated to the minimal primary decomposition of $J_G$. We show that this poset admits some specific subposets which are contractible. This in turn, provides some interesting algebraic consequences. In particular, we characterize all graphs $G$ for which $\mathrm{depth}\hspace{1.2mm} S/J_G=4$.
The $P$-partition generating function of a (naturally labeled) poset $P$ is a quasisymmetric function enumerating order-preserving maps from $P$ to $\mathbb{Z}^+$. Using the Hopf algebra of posets, we give necessary conditions for two posets to have the same generating function. In particular, we show that they must have the same number of antichains of each size, as well as the same shape (as defined by Greene). We also discuss which shapes guarantee uniqueness of the $P$-partition generating function and give a method of constructing pairs of non-isomorphic posets with the same generating fu…
A poset is said to be (2+2)-free if it does not contain an induced subposet that is isomorphic to 2+2, the union of two disjoint 2-element chains. Two elements in a poset are indistinguishable if they have the same strict up-set and the same strict down-set. Being indistinguishable defines an equivalence relation on the elements of the poset. We introduce the statistic maxindist, the maximum size of a set of indistinguishable elements. We show that, under a bijection of Bousquet-Melou et al., indistinguishable elements correspond to letters that belong to the same run in the so-called ascent s…
A partially ordered set is r-thick if every nonempty open interval contains at least r elements. This paper studies the flag vectors of graded, r-thick posets and shows the smallest convex cone containing them is isomorphic to the cone of flag vectors of all graded posets. It also defines a k-analogue of the Mobius function and k-Eulerian posets, which are 2k-thick. Several characterizations of k-Eulerian posets are given. The generalized Dehn-Sommerville equations are proved for flag vectors of k-Eulerian posets. A new inequality is proved to be valid and sharp for rank 8 Eulerian posets.
We study a poset of compositions restricted by part size under a partial ordering introduced by Björner and Stanley. We show that our composition poset $C_{d+1}$ is isomorphic to the poset of words $A_d^*$. This allows us to use techniques developed by Björner to study the Möbius function of $C_{d+1}$. We use counting arguments and shellability as avenues for proving that the Möbius function is $μ(u,w)=(-1)^{|u|+|w|}{w\choose u}_{dn}$, where ${w\choose u}_{dn}$ is the number of $d$-normal embeddings of $u$ in $w$. We then prove that the formal power series whose coefficients are given by the z…
Let $P$ be a finite poset. Let $L:=J(P)$ denote the lattice of order ideals of $P$. Let $b_i(L)$ denote the number of Boolean intervals of $L$ of rank $i$. We construct a simple graph $G(P)$ from our poset $P$. Denote by $f_i(P)$ the number of the cliques $K_{i+1}$, contained in the graph $G(P)$. Our main results are some linear equations connecting the numbers $f_i(P)$ and $b_i(L)$. We reprove the Dehn--Sommerville equations for simplicial polytopes. In our proof we use free resolutions and the theory of Stanley--Reisner rings.
We introduce cubic coordinates, which are integer words encoding intervals in the Tamari lattices. Cubic coordinates are in bijection with interval-posets, themselves known to be in bijection with Tamari intervals. We show that in each degree the set of cubic coordinates forms a lattice, isomorphic to the lattice of Tamari intervals. Geometric realizations are naturally obtained by placing cubic coordinates in space, highlighting some of their properties. We consider the cellular structure of these realizations. Finally, we show that the poset of cubic coordinates is shellable.
The higher Bruhat order is a poset of cubical tilings of a cyclic zonotope whose covering relations are cubical flips. For a 2-dimensional zonotope, the higher Bruhat order is isomorphic to a poset on commutation classes of reduced words for the longest element of a type A Coxeter system. For this case, we prove that the noncontractible intervals are in natural correspondence with the zonogonal tilings of a zonogon. Our proof uses some tools developed by Felsner and Weil to show that the two standard orderings on the rhombic tilings of a zonogon are identical.
In this paper, we investigate the M{ö}bius function $μ\_{\mathcal{S}}$ associated to a (locally finite) poset arising from a semigroup $\mathcal{S}$ of $\mathbb{Z}^m$. We introduce and develop a new approach to study $μ\_{\mathcal{S}}$ by using the Hilbert series of $\mathcal{S}$. The latter enables us to provide formulas for $μ\_{\mathcal{S}}$ when $\mathcal{S}$ belongs to certain families of semigroups. Finally, a characterization for a locally finite poset to be isomorphic to a semigroup poset is given.
Let $n=\prod_p p^{ν_p(n)}$ denote the canonical factorization of $n\in \N$. The binomial convolution of arithmetical functions $f$ and $g$ is defined as $(f\circ g)(n)=\sum_{d\mid n} (\prod_p \binom{ν_p(n)}{ν_p(d)}) f(d)g(n/d),$ where $\binom{a}{b}$ is the binomial coefficient. We provide properties of the binomial convolution. We study the $\C$-algebra $({\cal A},+,\circ,\C)$, characterizations of completely multiplicative functions, Selberg multiplicative functions, exponential Dirichlet series, exponential generating functions and a generalized binomial convolution leading to various Möbius…
A barcode is a finite multiset of intervals on the real line, $B = \{ (b_i, d_i)\}_{i=1}^n$. Barcodes are important objects in topological data analysis, where they serve as summaries of the persistent homology groups of a filtration. The combinatorial properties of barcodes have also been studied, mainly in the context of interval orders and interval graphs. In this paper, we define a new family of maps from the space of barcodes with $n$ bars to the permutation sets of various multisets, known as multipermutations. These multipermutations provide new combinatorial invariants on the space of …
For any finite set $\A$ of $n$ points in $\R^2$, we define a $(3n-3)$-dimensional simple polyhedron whose face poset is isomorphic to the poset of ``non-crossing marked graphs'' with vertex set $\A$, where a marked graph is defined as a geometric graph together with a subset of its vertices. The poset of non-crossing graphs on $\A$ appears as the complement of the star of a face in that polyhedron. The polyhedron has a unique maximal bounded face, of dimension $2n_i +n -3$ where $n_i$ is the number of points of $\A$ in the interior of $\conv(\A)$. The vertices of this polytope are all the pseu…
