We present a theory and applications of discrete exterior calculus on simplicial complexes of arbitrary finite dimension. This can be thought of as calculus on a discrete space. Our theory includes not only discrete differential forms but also discrete vector fields and the operators acting on these objects. This allows us to address the various interactions between forms and vector fields (such as Lie derivatives) which are important in applications. Previous attempts at discrete exterior calculus have addressed only differential forms. We also introduce the notion of a circumcentric dual of a simplicial complex. The importance of dual complexes in this field has been well understood, but previous researchers have used barycentric subdivision or barycentric duals. We show that the use of circumcentric duals is crucial in arriving at a theory of discrete exterior calculus that admits both vector fields and forms.
We derive a numerical method for Darcy flow, hence also for Poisson's equation in mixed (first order) form, based on discrete exterior calculus (DEC). Exterior calculus is a generalization of vector calculus to smooth manifolds and DEC is one of its discretizations on simplicial complexes such as triangle and tetrahedral meshes. DEC is a coordinate invariant discretization, in that it does not depend on the embedding of the simplices or the whole mesh. We start by rewriting the governing equations of Darcy flow using the language of exterior calculus. This yields a formulation in terms of flux…
We construct a two-parameter covariant differential calculus on the quantum $h$-exterior plane. We also give a deformation of the two-dimensional fermionic phase space.
We revisit the theory of Discrete Exterior Calculus (DEC) in 2D for general triangulations, relying only on Vector Calculus and Matrix Algebra. We present DEC numerical solutions of the Poisson equation and compare them against those found using the Finite Element Method with linear elements (FEML).

Finite element exterior calculus refers to the development of finite element methods for differential forms, generalizing several earlier finite element spaces of scalar fields and vector fields to arbitrary dimension $n$, arbitrary polynomial degree $r$, and arbitrary differential form degree $k$. The study of finite element exterior calculus began with the $\mathcal P_rΛ^k$ and $\mathcal P_r^-Λ^k$ families of finite element spaces on simplicial triangulations. In their development of these spaces, Arnold, Falk, and Winther rely on a duality relationship between $\mathcal P_rΛ^k$ and $\mathri…
Simplicial, piecewise-flat discretizations of manifolds provide a clear path towards curvature analysis on discrete geometries and for solutions of PDE's on manifolds of complex topologies. In this manuscript we review and expand on discrete exterior calculus methods using hybrid domains. We then analyze the geometric structure of curvature operators in a piecewise-flat lattice.
A new category of Lie algebras, called generalized Lie algebras, is presented such that classical Lie algebras and Lie-Rinehart algebras are objects of this new category. A new philosophy over generalized Lie algebroids theory is presented using the notion of generalized Lie algebra and examples of objects of the category of generalized Lie algebroids are presented. An exterior differential calculus on generalized Lie algebras is pre- sented and a theorem of Maurer-Cartan type is obtained. Supposing that any submodule(vector subbundle) of a generalized Lie algebra(algebroid) is an interior alg…
A spectral approach to building the exterior calculus in manifold learning problems is developed. The spectral approach is shown to converge to the true exterior calculus in the limit of large data. Simultaneously, the spectral approach decouples the memory requirements from the amount of data points and ambient space dimension. To achieve this, the exterior calculus is reformulated entirely in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian operator on functions. The exterior derivatives of these eigenfunctions (and their wedge products) are shown to form a frame (a type of spann…

In this paper we present a new theory of calculus over $k$-dimensional domains in a smooth $n$-manifold, unifying the discrete, exterior, and continuum theories. The calculus begins at a single point and is extended to chains of finitely many points by linearity, or superposition. It converges to the smooth continuum with respect to a norm on the space of ``pointed chains,'' culminating in the chainlet complex. Through this complex, we discover a broad theory of coordinate free, multivector analysis in smooth manifolds for which both the classical Newtonian calculus and the Cartan exterior cal…
A Lie algebroid over a manifold is a vector bundle over that manifold whose properties are very similar to those of a tangent bundle. Its dual bundle has properties very similar to those of a cotangent bundle: in the graded algebra of sections of its external powers, one can define an operator similar to the exterior derivative. We present in this paper the theory of Lie derivatives, Schouten-Nijenhuis brackets and exterior derivatives in the general setting of a Lie algebroid, its dual bundle and their exterior powers. All the results (which, for their most part, are already known) are given …
A generalization of exterior calculus is considered by allowing the partial derivatives in the exterior derivative to assume fractional orders. That is, a fractional exterior derivative is defined. This is found to generate new vector spaces of finite and infinite dimension, fractional differential form spaces. The definitions of closed and exact forms are extended to the new fractional form spaces with closure and integrability conditions worked out for a special case. Coordinate transformation rules are also computed. The transformation rules are different from those of the standard exterior…
We begin with a short presentation of the basic concepts related to Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids, but the main part of this paper deals with Lie algebroids. We present the theory of Lie derivatives, Schouten-Nijenhuis brackets and exterior derivatives in the genera…
We establish the equivalence of the Tuynman midpoint area formula for a spherical triangle to the classical area formulas of Euler and of Cagnoli. The derivation also yields a variant of the Cagnoli formula in terms of the medial triangle. We introduce the three barycentric coordinates of a point within the spherical triangle as area ratios which sum to unity. The barycentric coordinates are the Whitney 0-forms, scalar functions over the domain of the triangle associated with each vertex. We then construct, by exterior differentiation of the barycentric coordinates, succinct expressions for th…
In the language of $L^\infty$-modules proposed by Gigli, we introduce a first order calculus on a topological Lusin measure space $(M,\mathfrak{m})$ carrying a quasi-regular, strongly local Dirichlet form $\mathscr{E}$. Furthermore, we develop a second order calculus if $(M,\mathscr{E},\mathfrak{m})$ is tamed by a signed measure in the extended Kato class in the sense of Erbar, Rigoni, Sturm and Tamanini. This allows us to define e.g. Hessians, covariant and exterior derivatives, Ricci curvature, and second fundamental form.
We generalize the Schouten calculus of multivector fields to commutative Lie Rinehart pairs and define a non negatively graded Lie oo-algebra on their exterior power.
We develop a geometric version of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations for discrete mechanics and constrained discrete mechanics. The geometric approach consists of using suitable Lagrangian and isotropic submanifolds. We also provide a transition between the discrete and the continuous problems and propose variationality as an interesting geometric property to take into account in the design and computer simulation of numerical integrators.
