Stable commutator length on mapping class groups

Let $Γ$ be a finite index subgroup of the mapping class group $MCG(Σ)$ of a closed orientable surface $Σ$, possibly with punctures. We give a precise condition (in terms of the Nielsen-Thurston decomposition) when an element $g\inΓ$ has positive stable commutator length. In addition, we show that in these situations the stable commutator length, if nonzero, is uniformly bounded away from 0. The method works for certain subgroups of infinite index as well and we show $scl$ is uniformly positive on the nontrivial elements of the Torelli group. A Wilson Group of Non-Uniformly Exponential Growth

This note constructs a finitely generated group $W$ whose word-growth is exponential, but for which the infimum of the growth rates over all finite generating sets is 1 -- in other words, of non-uniformly exponential growth. This answers a question by Mikhael Gromov. The construction also yields a group of intermediate growth $V$ that locally resembles $W$ in that (by changing the generating set of $W$) there are isomorphic balls of arbitrarily large radius in $V$ and $W$'s Cayley graphs.

Exponential decay in the mapping class group

We show that the probability that a finitely supported random walk on a non-elementary subgroup of the the mapping class group gives a non-pseudo-Anosov element decays exponentially in the length of the random walk. More generally, we show that if R is a set of mapping class group elements with an upper bound on their translation lengths on the complex of curves, then the probability that a random walk lies in R decays exponentially in the length of the random walk.

Fibered commensurability and arithmeticity of random mapping tori

We consider a random walk on the mapping class group of a surface of finite type. We assume that the random walk is determined by a probability measure whose support is finite and generates a non-elementary subgroup $H$. Amenable uniformly recurrent subgroups and lattice embeddings

We study lattice embeddings for the class of countable groups $Γ$ defined by the property that the largest amenable uniformly recurrent subgroup $A_Γ$ is continuous. When $A_Γ$ comes from an extremely proximal action and the envelope of $A_Γ$ is co-amenable in $Γ$, we obtain restrictions on the locally compact groups $G$ that contain a copy of $Γ$ as a lattice, notably regarding normal subgroups of $G$, product decompositions of $G$, and more generally dense mappings from $G$ to a product of locally compact groups.
