We study lattice embeddings for the class of countable groups $Γ$ defined by the property that the largest amenable uniformly recurrent subgroup $A_Γ$ is continuous. When $A_Γ$ comes from an extremely proximal action and the envelope of $A_Γ$ is co-amenable in $Γ$, we obtain restrictions on the locally compact groups $G$ that contain a copy of $Γ$ as a lattice, notably regarding normal subgroups of $G$, product decompositions of $G$, and more generally dense mappings from $G$ to a product of locally compact groups.
We prove an inequality on the difference between the spectral radius of the Cayley graph of a group $G$ and the spectral radius of the Schreier graph $H\backslash G$ for any subgroup $H$. As an application we extend Kesten's theorem on spectral radii to uniformly recurrent subgroups and give a short proof that the result of Lyons and Peres on cycle density in Ramanujan graphs holds on average. More precisely, we show that if $\mathcal G$ is an infinite deterministic Ramanujan graph, then the time spent in short cycles by a random walk of length $n$ is $o(n)$.
In this paper, a group is called weakly amenable if its left regular representation is not uniformly isolated from the trivial representation. First examples of finitely generated non-amenable weakly amenable groups are constructed.
We show that every uniformly recurrent subgroup of a locally compact group is the family of stabilizers of a minimal action on a compact space. More generally, every closed invariant subset of the Chabauty space is the family of stabilizers of an action on a compact space on which the stabilizer map is continuous everywhere. This answers a question of Glasner and Weiss. We also introduce the notion of a universal minimal flow relative to a uniformly recurrent subgroup and prove its existence and uniqueness.
We prove that every uniform approximate homomorphism from a discrete amenable group into a symmetric group is uniformly close to a homomorphism into a slightly larger symmetric group. That is, amenable groups are uniformly flexibly stable in permutations. This answers affirmatively a question of Kun and Thom and a slight variation of a question of Lubotzky. We also give a negative answer to Lubotzky's original question by showing that the group $\mathbb{Z}$ is not uniformly strictly stable. Furthermore, we show that $\text{SL}_{r}(\mathbb{Z})$, $r\geq3$, is uniformly flexibly stable, but the f…
We prove that if $G$ is a finitely generated group and $Z$ is a uniformly recurrent subgroup of $G$ then there exists a minimal system $(X,G)$ with $Z$ as its stability system. This answers a query of Glasner and Weiss \cite{GW} in the case of finitely generated groups. Using the same method (introduced by Alon, Grytczuk, Haluszczak and Riordan \cite{AGHR}) we will prove that finitely generated sofic groups have free Bernoulli-subshifts admitting an invariant probability measure.
A topological group $G$ is B-amenable if and only if every continuous affine action of $G$ on a bounded convex subset of a locally convex space has an approximate fixed point. Similar results hold more generally for slightly uniformly continuous semigroup actions.
We prove the Tits Alternative for groups acting on $2$-dimensional "recurrent" complexes with uniformly bounded cell stabilisers. This class of complexes includes, among others: $2$-dimensional Euclidean buildings, $2$-dimensional systolic complexes, $B(6)$-small cancellation complexes, and standard Cayley complexes for Artin groups of extra-large type. In the appendix written jointly with Jon McCammond we extend the result to a class of $2$-dimensional Artin groups containing all large-type Artin groups.
Let $X$ be a compact metrizable space equipped with a continuous action of a countable amenable group $G$. Suppose that the dynamical system $(X,G)$ is expansive and is the quotient by a uniformly bounded-to-one factor map of a strongly irreducible subshift. Let $τ\colon X \to X$ be a continuous map commuting with the action of $G$. We prove that if there is no pair of distinct $G$-homoclinic points in $X$ having the same image under $τ$, then $τ$ is surjective.
We study the uniformly recurrent subgroups of groups acting by homeomorphisms on a topological space. We prove a general result relating uniformly recurrent subgroups to rigid stabilizers of the action, and deduce a $C^*$-simplicity criterion based on the non-amenability of rigid stabilizers. As an application, we show that Thompson's group $V$ is $C^\ast$-simple, as well as groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms of the real line. This provides examples of finitely presented $C^\ast$-simple groups without free subgroups. We prove that a branch group is either amenable or $C^\ast$-simple…
The objective of this series is to study metric geometric properties of (coarse) disjoint unions of amenable Cayley graphs. We employ the Cayley topology and observe connections between large scale structure of metric spaces and group properties of Cayley accumulation points. In this Part I, we prove that a disjoint union has property A of G. Yu if and only if all groups appearing as Cayley accumulation points in the space of marked groups are amenable. As an application, we construct two disjoint unions of finite special linear groups (and unimodular linear groups) with respect to two systems…
For locally compact groups amenability and Kazhdan's property (T) are mutually exclusive in the sense that a group having both properties is compact. This is no longer true for more general Polish groups. However, a weaker result still holds for SIN groups (topological groups admitting a basis of conjugation-invariant neighbourhoods of identity): if such a group admits sufficiently many unitary representations, then it is precompact as soon as it is amenable and has the strong property (T) (i.e. admits a finite Kazhdan set). If an amenable topological group with property (T) admits a faithful …
Let $Λ$ be a row-finite and source-free higher rank graph with finitely many vertices. In this paper, we define the Higman-Thompson like group $\Lht$ of the graph C*-algebra $\mathcal{O}_Λ$ to be a special subgroup of the unitary group in $Ø_Λ$. It is shown that $\Lht$ is closely related to the topological full groups of the groupoid associated with $Λ$. Some properties of $\Lht$ are also investigated. We show that its commutator group $\DLht$ is simple and that $\DLht$ has only one nontrivial uniformly recurrent subgroup if $Λ$ is aperiodic and strongly connected. Furthermore, if $Λ$ is singl…
We study skew-amenable topological groups, i.e., those admitting a left-invariant mean on the space of bounded real-valued functions left-uniformly continuous in the sense of Bourbaki. We prove characterizations of skew-amenability for topological groups of isometries and automorphisms, clarify the connection with extensive amenability of group actions, establish a Følner-type characterization, and discuss closure properties of the class of skew-amenable topological groups. Moreover, we isolate a dynamical sufficient condition for skew-amenability and provide several concrete variations of thi…
Extensive amenability is a property of group actions which has recently been used as a tool to prove amenability of groups. We study this property and prove that it is preserved under a very general construction of semidirect products. As an application, we establish the amenability of all subgroups of the group IET of interval exchange transformations that have angular components of rational rank~${\leq 2}$. In addition, we obtain a reformulation of extensive amenability in terms of inverted orbits and use it to present a purely probabilistic proof that recurrent actions are extensively amena…
The recent breakthrough works [6,8,9] which established the amenability for new classes of groups, lead to the following question: is the action $W(\mathbb{Z}^d) \curvearrowright \mathbb{Z}^d$ extensively amenable? (Where $W(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ is the {\em wobbling group} of permutations $σ:\mathbb{Z}^d \to \mathbb{Z}^d$ with bounded range). This is equivalent to asking whether the action $(\mathbb{Z}/2\ \mathbb{Z})^{(\mathbb{Z}^d)} \rtimes W(\mathbb{Z}^d) \curvearrowright (\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{(\mathbb{Z}^d)}$ is amenable. The $d=1$ and $d=2$ and have been settled respectively in [6,8]. By [9]…
The objective of this series is to study metric geometric properties of disjoint unions of amenable Cayley graphs by group properties of the Cayley accumulation points in the space of marked groups. In this Part II, we prove that a disjoint union admits a fibred coarse embedding into a Hilbert space (in a generalized sense) if and only if the Cayley boundary of the sequence in the space of marked groups is uniformly a-T-menable. We furthermore extend this result to ones with other target spaces. By combining our main results with constructions of Arzhantseva--Osajda and Osajda, we construct tw…
