Survey article for the Proceedings of the Conference "Singularities and Computer Algebra" on Occasion of Gert-Martin Greuel's 60th Birthday, LMS Lecture Notes (to appear)
Let $(X,x)$ be an isolated complete intersection singularity and let $f : (X,x) \to (\CC,0)$ be the germ of an analytic function with an isolated singularity at $x$. An important topological invariant in this situation is the Picard-Lefschetz monodromy operator associated to $f$. We give a survey on what is known about this operator. In particular, we review methods of computation of the monodromy and its eigenvalues (zeta function), results on the Jordan normal form of it, definition and properties of the spectrum, and the relation between the monodromy and the topology of the singularity.
We describe the relationship between intersection cohomology with twisted coefficients and the perverse sheaves which play the role of the eigenspaces for the Milnor monodromy of an affine hypersurface.
We say that a complex analytic space, $X$, is an intersection cohomology manifold if and only if the shifted constant sheaf on $X$ is isomorphic to intersection cohomology; this is quickly seen to be equivalent to $X$ being a homology manifold. Given an analytic function $f$ on an intersection cohomology manifold, we describe a simple relation between $V(f)$ being an intersection cohomology manifold and the vanishing cycle Milnor monodromy of $f$. We then describe how the Sebastiani-Thom isomorphism allows us to easily produce intersection cohomology manifolds with arbitrary singular sets. Fin…
A boundary singularity is a singularity of a function on a manifold with boundary. The simple and unimodal boundary singularities were classified by V. I. Arnold and V. I. Matov. The McKay correspondence can be generalized to the simple boundary singularities. We consider the monodromy of the simple, parabolic, and exceptional unimodal boundary singularities. We show that the characteristic polynomial of the monodromy is related to the Poincaré series of the coordinate algebra of the ambient singularity.
Following Newton, Ivory and Arnold, we study the Newtonian potentials of algebraic hypersurfaces in $R^n$. The ramification of (analytic continuations of) these potential depends on a monodromy group, which can be considered as a proper subgroup of the local monodromy group of a complete intersection (acting on a {\em twisted} vanishing homology group if $n$ is odd). Studying this monodromy group we prove, in particular, that the attraction force of a hyperbolic layer of degree $d$ in $R^n$ coincides with appropriate algebraic vector-functions everywhere outside the attracting surface if $n=2$…
For a generic (polynomial) one-parameter deformation of a complete intersection, there is defined its monodromy zeta-function. We provide explicit formulae for this zeta-function in terms of the corresponding Newton polyhedra in the case the deformation is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedra. Using this result we obtain the formula for the monodromy zeta-function at the origin of a polynomial on a complete intersection, which is an analog of the Libgober--Sperber theorem.
A relation is proved between the Poincaré series of the coordinate algebra of a two-dimensional quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularity and the characteristic polynomial of its monodromy operator. For a Kleinian singularity not of type $A_{2n}$, this amounts to the statement that the Poincaré series is the quotient of the characteristic polynomial of the Coxeter element by the characteristic polynomial of the affine Coxeter element of the corresponding root system. We show that this result also follows from the McKay correspondence.
The computations that are suggested by String Theory in the B model requires the existence of degenerations of CY manifolds with maximum unipotent monodromy. In String Theory such a point in the moduli space is called a large radius limit (or large complex structure limit). In this paper we are going to construct one parameter families of $n$ dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds, which are complete intersections in toric varieties and which have a monodromy operator $T$ such that (T$^{N}-id)^{n+1}=0$ but (T$^{N}-id)^{n}\neq0,$ i.e the monodromy operator is maximal unipotent.
A problem list in singularity theory. Most of these problems are related with the algorithmic enumeration of possible topological types of non-discriminant Morsifications of real function singularities, and/or with the Picard--Lefschetz theory.
The geometric monodromy of a plane curve singularity is a quasi-finite diffeomorphism. In this paper we locate the reduction curves of the geometric monodromy and the quadratic vanishing cycles of the singularity. An application to the geometric monodromy group is given.
We give a description of the Milnor fiber and the monodromy of a singularity of the form f+zg = 0 where f and g define plane curves and have no common components. The description depends only on the topological type of the two plane curve germs defined by f and g. In particular, this gives a description of the boundary of the Milnor fiber. As a corollary, we give a simple formula for the monodromy zeta function and the Euler characteristic of the fiber.
We study mirror symmetry of complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds which have birational automorphisms of infinite order. We observe that movable cones in birational geometry are transformed, under mirror symmetry, to the monodromy nilpotent cones which are naturally glued together.
In a previous work we have introduced the notion of embedded $\Q$-resolution, which essentially consists in allowing the final ambient space to contain abelian quotient singularities. Here we give a generalization of N. A'Campo's formula for the monodromy zeta function of a singularity in this setting. Some examples of its applications are shown.
With an explicit example, we confirm a conjecture by Neumann and Wahl that there exist cusps with no Galois cover by a complete intersection. Some computational techniques are reviewed, and a method for deciding whether a given cusp has a complete intersection Galois cover is developed.
A Fano problem is an enumerative problem of counting $r$-dimensional linear subspaces on a complete intersection in $\mathbb{P}^n$ over a field of arbitrary characteristic, whenever the corresponding Fano scheme is finite. A classical example is enumerating lines on a cubic surface. We study the monodromy of finite Fano schemes $F_{r}(X)$ as the complete intersection $X$ varies. We prove that the monodromy group is either symmetric or alternating in most cases. In the exceptional cases, the monodromy group is one of the Weyl groups $W(E_6)$ or $W(D_k)$.
We extend the tropical intersection theory to tropicalizations of germs of analytic sets. In particular, we construct a (not entirely obvious) local version of the ring of tropical fans with a nondegenerate intersection pairing. As an application, we study nearby monodromy eigenvalues -- the eigenvalues of the monodromy operators of singularities, adjacent to a given singularity of a holomorphic function $f$. More precisely, we express some of such values in terms of certain resolutions of $f$. The expression is given it terms of the exceptional divisor strata of arbitrary codimension, general…
The Poincare series of an irreducible plane curve singularity equals the zeta function of its monodromy, by a result of Campillo, Delgado and Gusein-Zade. We derive this fact from a formula of Ebeling and Gusein-Zade relating the Poincare series of a quasi-homogeneous complete intersection singularity to the Saito dual of a product of zeta functions.
In this paper we study the map associating to a linear differential operator with rational coefficients its monodromy data. The operator has one regular and one irregular singularity of Poincare' rank 1. We compute the Poisson structure of the corresponding Monodromy Preserving Deformation Equations on the space of the monodromy data.
Let $X$ be a projective manifold, and $D$ be a normal crossing divisor of $X$. By Jost-Zuo's theorem that if we have a reductive representation $ρ$ of the fundamental group $π_{1}(X^{*})$ with unipotent local monodromy, where $X^*=X-D$, then there exists a tame pluriharmonic metric $h$ on the flat bundle $\mathcal V$ associated to the local system $\mathbb V$ obtain from $ρ$ over $X^*$. Therefore, we get a harmonic bundle $(E, θ, h)$, where $θ$ is the Higgs field, i.e. a holomorphic section of $End(E)\otimesΩ^{1,0}_{X^*}$ satisfying $θ^2=0$. In this paper, we study the harmonic bundle $(E,θ,h)…
In this article, we consider the singularity of an arbitrary homogeneous polynomial with complex coefficients $f(x_0,\dots,x_n)$ at the origin of $\mathbb C^{n+1}$, via the study of the monodromy characteristic polynomials $Δ_l(t)$, and the relation between the monodromy zeta function and the Hodge spectrum of the singularity. We go further with $Δ_1(t)$ in the case $n=2$. This work is based on knowledge of multiplier ideals and local systems.
In 2011 Lemahieu and Van Proeyen proved the Monodromy Conjecture for the local topological zeta function of a non-degenerated surface singularity. We start from their work and obtain the same result for Igusa's p-adic and the motivic zeta function. In the p-adic case, this is, for a polynomial f in Z[x,y,z] satisfying f(0,0,0)=0 and non-degenerated with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we show that every pole of the local p-adic zeta function of f induces an eigenvalue of the local monodromy of f at some point of the complex zero locus of f close to the origin. Essentially the entire paper is…
A Kodaira fibration is a non-isotrivial fibration $f\colon S\rightarrow B$ from a smooth algebraic surface $S$ to a smooth algebraic curve $B$ such that all fibers are smooth algebraic curves of genus $g$. Such fibrations arise as complete curves inside the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of genus $g$ algebraic curves. We investigate here the possible connected monodromy groups of a Kodaira fibration in the case $g=3$ and classify which such groups can arise from a Kodaira fibration obtained as a general complete intersection curve inside a subvariety of $\mathcal{M}_3$ parametrizing curves whose…
The paper \cite{BM} proposed a construction of a twisted representation of the lattice vertex algebra corresponding to the Milnor lattice of a simple singularity. The main difficulty in extending the above construction to an arbitrary isolated singularity is in the so called {\em phase factors} -- the scalar functions produced by composing two vertex operators. They are certain family of multivalued analytic functions on the space of miniversal deformations. The first result in this paper is an explicit formula for the unperturbed phase factors in terms of the classical monodromy operator and …
We consider a hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^n$ with an isolated singular point at the origin, and study the mixed Hodge structure of the stalk of its intersection cohomology complex at the origin. In particular we express the dimension of each graded piece of the weight filtration of this mixed Hodge structure in terms of the numbers of the Jordan blocks in the Milnor monodromy.
In this paper we introduce a certain class of families of Hessenberg varieties arising from Springer theory for symmetric spaces. We study the geometry of those Hessenberg varieties and investigate their monodromy representations in detail using the geometry of complete intersections of quadrics. We obtain decompositions of these monodromy representations into irreducibles and compute the Fourier transforms of the IC complexes associated to these irreducible representations. The results of the paper refine (part of) the Springer correspondece for the split symmetric pair (SL(N),SO(N)) in [CVX2…
If (V,0) is an isolated complete intersection singularity and X a holomorphic vector field tangent to V one can define an index of X, the so called GSV index, which generalizes the Poincare-Hopf index. We prove that the GSV index coincides with the dimension of a certain explicitely constructed vector space, if X is deformable in a certain sense and V is a curve. We also give a sufficient algebraic criterion for X to be deformable in this way. If one considers the real analytic case one can also define an index of X which is called the real GSV index. Under the condition that X has the deforma…
We study the topology of polynomial functions by deforming them generically. We explain how the non-conservation of the total ``quantity'' of singularity in the neighbourhood of infinity is related to the variation of topology in certain families of boundary singularities along the hyperplane at infinity.
We define a new equivariant (with respect to a finite group $G$ action) version of the Poincaré series of a multi-index filtration as an element of the power series ring ${\widetilde{A}}(G)[[t_1, \ldots, t_r]]$ for a certain modification ${\widetilde{A}}(G)$ of the Burnside ring of the group $G$. We give a formula for this Poincaré series of a collection of plane valuations in terms of a $G$-resolution of the collection. We show that, for filtrations on the ring of germs of functions in two variables defined by the curve valuations corresponding to the irreducible components of a plane curve s…
The monodromy conjecture is an umbrella term for several conjectured relationships between poles of zeta functions, monodromy eigenvalues and roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials in arithmetic geometry and singularity theory. Even the weakest of these relations -- the Denef--Loeser conjecture on topological zeta functions -- is open for surface singularities. We prove it for a wide class of multidimensional singularities that are non-degenerate with respect to their Newton polyhedra, including all such singularities of functions of four variables. A crucial difference from the known case of thr…
We offer an equivariant version of the classical monodromy zeta function of a singularity as a series with coefficients from the Grothendieck ring of finite G-sets tensored by the field of rational numbers. Main two ingredients of the definition are equivariant Lefschetz numbers and the lambda-structure on the Grothendieck ring of finite G-sets. We give an A'Campo type formula for the equivariant zeta function.
Let $\Cal U$ be an open neighborhood of the origin in $\Bbb C^{n+1}$ and let $f:(\Cal U, \bold 0)\to(\Bbb C, 0)$ be complex analytic. Let $z_0$ be a generic linear form on $\Bbb C^{n+1}$. If the relative polar curve $Γ^1_{f, z_0}$ at the origin is irreducible and the intersection number $\big(Γ^1_{f, z_0}\cdot V(f))_\bold 0$ is prime, then there are severe restrictions on the possible degree $n$ cohomology of the Milnor fiber at the origin. We also obtain some interesting, weaker, results when $\big(Γ^1_{f, z_0}\cdot V(f))_\bold 0$ is not prime.
For isolated complex hypersurface singularities with real defining equation we show the existence of a monodromy vector field such that complex conjugation intertwines the local monodromy diffeomorphism with its inverse. In particular, it follows that the geometric monodromy is the composition of the involution induced by complex conjugation and another involution. This topological property holds for all isolated complex plane curve singularities. Using real morsifications, we compute the action of complex conjugation and of the other involution on the Milnor fiber of real plane curve singular…
We consider a holomorphic 1-form $ω$ with an isolated zero on an isolated complete intersection singularity $(V,0)$. We construct quadratic forms on an algebra of functions and on a module of differential forms associated to the pair $(V,ω)$. They generalize the Eisenbud-Levine-Khimshiashvili quadratic form defined for a smooth $V$.
We address the conjecture of [Durfee1978], bounding the singularity genus, p_g, by a multiple of the Milnor number, μ, for an n-dimensional isolated complete intersection singularity. We show that the original conjecture of Durfee, namely (n+1)!p_g\leq μ, fails whenever the codimension r is greater than one. Moreover, we propose a new inequality, and we verify it for homogeneous complete intersections. In the homogeneous case the inequality is guided by a `combinatorial inequality', that might have an independent interest.
We classify three dimensional isolated weighted homogeneous rational complete intersection singularities, which define many new four dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories. We also determine the mini-versal deformation of these singularities, and therefore solve the Coulomb branch spectrum and Seiberg-Witten solution.
There are some generalizations of the classical Eisenbud-Levine-Khimshashvili formula for the index of a singular point of an analytic vector field on $R^n$ for vector fields on singular varieties. We offer an alternative approach based on the study of indices of 1-forms instead of vector fields. When the variety under consideration is a real isolated complete intersection singularity (icis), we define an index of a (real) 1-form on it. In the complex setting we define an index of a holomorphic 1-form on a complex icis and express it as the dimension of a certain algebra. In the real setting, …
For a germ of a quasihomogeneous function with an isolated critical point at the origin invariant with respect to an appropriate action of a finite abelian group, H. Fan, T. Jarvis, and Y. Ruan defined the so-called quantum cohomology group. It is considered as the main object of the quantum singularity theory (FJRW-theory). We define orbifold versions of the monodromy operator on the quantum (co)homology group, of the Milnor lattice, of the Seifert form and of the intersection form. We also describe some symmetry properties of invariants of invertible polynomials refining the known ones.
We study the monodromy representation of the system $E_C$ of differential equations annihilating Lauricella's hypergeometric function $F_C$ of $m$ variables. Our representation space is the twisted homology group associated with an integral representation of $F_C$. We find generators of the fundamental group of the complement of the singular locus of $E_C$, and give some relations for these generators. We express the circuit transformations along these generators, by using the intersection forms defined on the twisted homology group and its dual.
We consider the system $\mathcal{F}_4(a,b,c)$ of differential equations annihilating Appell's hypergeometric series $F_4(a,b,c;x)$. We find the integral representations for four linearly independent solutions expressed by the hypergeometric series $F_4$. By using the intersection forms of twisted (co)homology groups associated with them, we provide the monodromy representation of $\mathcal{F}_4(a,b,c)$ and the twisted period relations for the fundamental systems of solutions of $\mathcal{F}_4$.
In 1982, Tamaki Yano proposed a conjecture predicting how is the set of $b$-exponents of an irreducible plane curve singularity germ which is generic in its equisingularity class. In 1986, Pi.~Cassou-Noguès proved the conjecture for the one Puiseux pair case. In a previous work the authors proved the conjecture for two Puiseux pairs germs whose complex algebraic monodromy has distinct eigenvalues. A natural problem induced by Yano's conjecture is, for a generic equisingular deformation of an isolated plane curve singularity germ to study how the set of $b$-exponents depends on the topology of …
We study the topological K-theory spectrum of the dg singularity category associated to a weighted projective complete intersection. We calculate the topological K-theory of the dg singularity category of a weighted projective hypersurface in terms of its Milnor fiber and monodromy operator, and, as an application, we obtain a lift of the Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro construction to the level of spectra.
For quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities, the logarithmic comparison theorem has been characterized explicitly by Holland and Mond. In the non quasihomogeneous case, we give a necessary condition for the logarithmic comparison theorem in terms of the Gauss-Manin system of the singularity. It shows in particular that the logarithmic comparison theorem can hold for a non quasihomogeneous singularity only if 1 is an eigenvalue of the monodromy.
The famous $4n^2$-inequality is extended to generic complete intersection singularities: it is shown that the multiplicity of the self-intersection of a mobile linear system with a maximal singularity is higher than $4n^2μ$, where $μ$ is the multiplicity of the singular point.
We establish a criterion for sheaves on an adically complete DG scheme to be coherent. We deduce a description of coherent sheaves on an adically complete lci singularity in terms of modules for a DG Lie algebra.
We generalize the cosection localized Gysin map to intersection homology and Borel-Moore homology, which provides us with a purely topological construction of the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten invariants and some GLSM invariants.
The integral monodromy on the Milnor lattice of an isolated quasihomogeneous singularity is subject of an almost untouched conjecture of Orlik from 1972. We prove this conjecture for all iterated Thom-Sebastiani sums of chain type singularities and cycle type singularities. The main part of the paper is purely algebraic. It provides tools for dealing with sums and tensor products of ${\mathbb Z}$-lattices with automorphisms of finite order and with cyclic generators. The calculations are involved. They use fine properties of unit roots, cyclotomic polynomials, their resultants and discriminant…
