We give the definition of Lazard and Hall sets in the context of transitive factorizations of free monoids. The equivalence of the two properties is proved. This allows to build new effective bases of free partially commutative Lie algebras. The commutation graphs for which such sets exist are completely characterized and we explicit, in this context, the classical PBW rewriting process.
We introduce the concept of the primitivity of independent set in vertex-transitive graphs, and investigate the relationship between the primitivity and the structure of maximum independent sets in direct products of vertex-transitive graphs. As a consequence of our main results, we positively solve an open problem related to the structure of independent sets in powers of vertex-transitive graphs.
Motivated by some questions in Euclidean Ramsey theory, our aim in this note is to show that there exists a cyclic quadrilateral that does not embed into any transitive set (in any dimension). We show that in fact this holds for almost all cyclic quadrilaterals, and we also give explicit examples of such cyclic quadrilaterals. These are the first explicit examples of spherical sets that do not embed into transitive sets.
In this short note we present a simple combinatorial trick which can be effectively applied to show the non--existence of sharply transitive sets of permutations in certain finite permutation groups.
We show that for every $1 \le k \le d/(\log d)^C$, every finite transitive set of unit vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$ lies within distance $O(1/\sqrt{\log (d/k)})$ of some codimension $k$ subspace, and this distance bound is best possible. This extends a result of Ben Green, who proved it for $k=1$.
We further study sets of labeled dice in which the relation "is a better die than" is non-transitive. Focusing on sets with an additional symmetry we call "balance," we prove that sets of $n$ such $m$-sided dice exist for all $n,m \geq 3$. We then show how to construct a set of $n$ dice such that the relation behaves according to the direction of the arrows of any tournament (complete directed graph) on $n$ vertices.
The direct product $G\times H$ of graphs $G$ and $H$ is defined by: \[V(G\times H)=V(G)\times V(H)\] and \[E(G\times H)=\left\{[(u_1,v_1),(u_2,v_2)]: (u_1,u_2)\in E(G) \mbox{\ and\ } (v_1,v_2)\in E(H)\right\}.\] In this paper, we will prove that the equality $$α(G\times H)=\max\{α(G)|H|, α(H)|G|\}$$ holds for all vertex-transitive graphs $G$ and $H$, which provides an affirmative answer to a problem posed by Tardif (Discrete Math. 185 (1998) 193-200). Furthermore, the structure of all maximum independent sets of $G\times H$ are determined.
In this paper, we give a direct construction for a set of dice realizing any given tournament $T$. The construction for a tournament with $n$ vertices requires a number of sides on the order of $n$, which appears to be the best general construction to date. Our construction relies only on a standard theorem from graph theory.
A finite set $X$ in some Euclidean space $R^n$ is called Ramsey if for any $k$ there is a $d$ such that whenever $R^d$ is $k$-coloured it contains a monochromatic set congruent to $X$. This notion was introduced by Erdos, Graham, Montgomery, Rothschild, Spencer and Straus, who asked if a set is Ramsey if and only if it is spherical, meaning that it lies on the surface of a sphere. This question (made into a conjecture by Graham) has dominated subsequent work in Euclidean Ramsey theory. In this paper we introduce a new conjecture regarding which sets are Ramsey; this is the first ever `rival' c…
By H. Strietz, 1975, and G. Czédli, 1996, the complete lattice $Equ(A)$ of all equivalences is four-generated, provided the size $|A|$ is an accessible cardinal. Results of I. Chajda and G. Czédli, 1996, G. Takách, 1996, T. Dolgos, 2015, and J.\ Kulin 2016, show that both the lattice $Quo(A)$ of all quasiorders on $A$ and, for $|A|\leq \aleph_0$, the lattice $Tran(A)$ of all transitive relations on $A$ have small generating sets. Based on complicated earlier constructions, we derive some new results in a concise but not self-contained way.
We construct irreducible balanced non-transitive sets of $n$-sided dice for any positive integer $n$, which was raised in \cite[Question 5.2]{SS17}. One main tool of the construction is to study so-called fair sets of dice. Furthermore, we also study the distribution of the probabilities of balanced non-transitive sets of dice. For a lower bound, we show that the probability could be arbitrarily close to $\frac{1}{2}$ and for a upper bound, we construct a balanced non-transitive set of dice whose probability is $\frac{1}{2} + \frac{13-\sqrt{153}}{24} \approx \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{9.12}.$
We say that a finite subset of the unit sphere in $\mathbf{R}^d$ is transitive if there is a group of isometries which acts transitively on it. We show that the width of any transitive set is bounded above by a constant times $(\log d)^{-1/2}$. This is a consequence of the following result: If $G$ is a finite group and $ρ: G \rightarrow \mbox{U}_d(\mathbf{C})$ a unitary representation, and if $v \in \mathbf{C}^d$ is a unit vector, there is another unit vector $w \in \mathbf{C}^d$ such that \[ \sup_{g \in G} |\langle ρ(g) v, w \rangle| \leq (1 + c \log d)^{-1/2}.\] These results answer a questi…
Let $Ω=\{1,2,...,n\}$ where $n \ge 2$. The {\em shape} of an ordered set partition $P=(P_1,..., P_k)$ of $Ω$ is the integer partition $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_k)$ defined by $λ_i = |P_i|$. Let G be a group of permutations acting on $Ω$. For a fixed partition $λ$ of n, we say that G is {\em $λ$-transitive} if G has only one orbit when acting on partitions P of shape $\la$. A corresponding definition can also be given when G is just a set. For example, if $λ=(n-t,1,...,1)$, then a $λ$-transitive group is the same as a t-transitive permutation group and if $λ=(n-t,t)$, then we recover the t-homogeneous perm…
An orientation of a graph is semi-transitive if it is acyclic, and for any directed path $v_0\rightarrow v_1\rightarrow \cdots\rightarrow v_k$ either there is no arc between $v_0$ and $v_k$, or $v_i\rightarrow v_j$ is an arc for all $0\leq i<j\leq k$. An undirected graph is semi-transitive if it admits a semi-transitive orientation. Semi-transitive graphs generalize several important classes of graphs and they are precisely the class of word-representable graphs studied extensively in the literature. Determining if a triangle-free graph is semi-transitive is an NP-hard problem. The existence o…
We investigate the relationship between two constructions of maximal comma-free codes described respectively by Eastman and by Scholtz and the notions of Hall sets and Lazard sets introduced in connection with factorizations of free monoids and bases of free Lie algebras.
We study the problem of half-domination sets of vertices in vertex transitive infinite graphs generated by regular or semi-regular tessellations of the plane. In some cases, the results obtained are sharp and in the rest, we show upper bounds for the average densities of vertices in half-domination sets.
Let $G(X,Y)$ be a connected, non-complete bipartite graph with $|X|\leq |Y|$. An independent set $A$ of $G(X,Y)$ is said to be trivial if $A\subseteq X$ or $A\subseteq Y$. Otherwise, $A$ is nontrivial. By $α(X,Y)$ we denote the size of maximal-sized nontrivial independent sets of $G(X,Y)$. We prove that if the automorphism group of $G(X,Y)$ is transitive on $X$ and $Y$, then $α(X,Y)=|Y|-d(X)+1$, where $d(X)$ is the common degree of vertices in $X$. We also give the structures of maximal-sized nontrivial independent sets of $G(X,Y)$. As applications of this result, we give the upper bound of si…
