This article is devoted to obtain the $Γ$-limit, as $ε$ tends to zero, of the family of functionals $$F_ε(u)=\int_Ωf\Bigl(x,\frac{x}ε,..., \frac{x}{ε^n},\nabla u(x)\Bigr)dx$$, where $f=f(x,y^1,...,y^n,z)$ is periodic in $y^1,...,y^n$, convex in $z$ and satisfies a very weak regularity assumption with respect to $x,y^1,...,y^n$. We approach the problem using the multiscale Young measures.
The interplay between multiscale homogenization and dimension reduction for nonlinear elastic thin plates is analyzed in the case in which the scaling of the energy corresponds to Kirchhoff's nonlinear bending theory for plates. Different limit models are deduced depending on the relative ratio between the thickness parameter $h$ and the two homogenization scales $\ep$ and $\ep^2$.
We consider the well-travelled problem of homogenization of random integral functionals. When the integrand has standard growth conditions, the qualitative theory is well-understood. When it comes to unbounded functionals, that is, when the domain of the integrand is not the whole space and may depend on the space-variable, there is no satisfactory theory. In this contribution we develop a complete qualitative stochastic homogenization theory for nonconvex unbounded functionals with convex growth. We first prove that if the integrand is convex and has $p$-growth from below (with $p>d$, the dim…
We study homogenization of multiscale Maxwell wave equation that depends on $n$ separable microscopic scales in a domain $D\subset{\mathbb R}^d$ on a finite time interval $(0,T)$. Due to the non-compactness of the embedding of $H_0(\curl,D)$ in $L^2(D)^d$, homogenization of Maxwell wave equation can be significantly more complicated than that of scalar wave equations in the $H^1(D)$ setting, and requires analysis uniquely for Maxwell wave equations. We employ multiscale convergence. The homogenized Maxwell wave equation and the initial condition are deduced from the multiscale homogenized equa…
We study the rate of convergence in periodic homogenization for convex Hamilton--Jacobi equations with multiscales, where the Hamiltonian $H=H(x, y, p): \mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{T}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R }$ depends on both of the spatial variable and the oscillatory variable. In particular, we show that for the Cauchy problem, the rate of convergence is $O(\sqrtε)$ by optimal control formulas, scale separations and curve cutting techniques. We also show the rate $O(\sqrtε)$ of homogenization for the static problem based on the same idea. Additionally, we provide examples that i…
The quasi-periodic homogenization for some classes of first-order Hamilton-Jaconi-Bellman equation is studied in this paper. The cell problem of the quasi-periodic homogenization satisfies the non-resonance condition, under which the corresponding deterministic system is ergodic. The almost periodic homogenization for the same classes of equations is also solved, as a limit of a sequence of quasi-periodic homogenizations. Here, the almost periodicity is in the sense of H. Bohr. This result has been cited by some authors, for example: by H. Ishii, "Almost periodic homogenization of Hamilton-Jac…
In this paper we derive quantitative estimates in the context of stochastic homogenization for integral functionals defined on finite partitions, where the random surface integrand is assumed to be stationary. Requiring the integrand to satisfy in addition a multiscale functional inequality, we control quantitatively the fluctuations of the asymptotic cell formulas defining the homogenized surface integrand. As a byproduct we obtain a simplified cell formula where we replace cubes by almost flat hyperrectangles.
Inspired by continuum mechanical contact problems with geological fault networks, we consider elliptic second order differential equations with jump conditions on a sequence of multiscale networks of interfaces with a finite number of non-separating scales. Our aim is to derive and analyze a description of the asymptotic limit of infinitely many scales in order to quantify the effect of resolving the network only up to some finite number of interfaces and to consider all further effects as homogeneous. As classical homogenization techniques are not suited for this kind of geometrical setting, …
A periodic homogenization result of nonconvex integral functionals in the vectorial case with convex bounded constraints on gradients is proved. The class of integrands considered have singular behavior near the boundary of the convex set of the constraints. We apply the result to the case of periodic homogenization in hyperelasticity for bounded gradients of deformations.
Homogenization of a scalar elliptic equation in a bounded domain with Neuman boundary condition is studied. Coefficients of the operator are oscillating over two different groups of variables with different small periods $\varepsilon$ and $δ=δ(\varepsilon)$. We assume that $δ/{\varepsilon}$ tends to zero as $\varepsilon$ tends to zero. It is known that the limit problem is obtained through reiterated homogenization procedure and corresponds to an elliptic equation with constant coefficients. The difference for resolvents of the initial and the limit problems is estimated in operator $(L^2\to L…
We prove stochastic homogenization for integral functionals defined on Sobolev spaces, where the stationary, ergodic integrand satisfies a degenerate growth condition of the form \begin{equation*} c|ξA(ω,x)|^p\leq f(ω,x,ξ)\leq |ξA(ω,x)|^p+Λ(ω,x) \end{equation*} for some $p\in (1,+\infty)$ and with a stationary and ergodic diagonal matrix $A$ such that its norm and the norm of its inverse satisfy minimal integrability assumptions. We also consider the convergence when Dirichlet boundary conditions or an obstacle condition are imposed. Assuming the strict convexity and differentiability of $f$ w…
In this article, we study homogenization of a parabolic linear problem governed by a coefficient matrix with rapid spatial and temporal oscillations in periodically perforated domains with homogeneous Neumann data on the boundary of the holes. We prove results adapted to the problem for a characterization of multiscale limits for gradients and very weak multiscale convergence.
We study the limit behaviour of a sequence of non-convex, vectorial, random integral functionals, defined on $W^{1,1}$, whose integrands satisfy degenerate linear growth conditions. These involve suitable random, scale-dependent weight-functions. Under minimal assumptions on the integrand and on the weight-functions, we show that the sequence of functionals homogenizes to a non-degenerate functional defined on $BV$.
In this paper we prove a general homogenization result for monotone parabolic problems with an arbitrary number of microscopic scales in space as well as in time, where the scale functions are not necessarily powers of epsilon. The main tools for the homogenization procedure are multiscale convergence and very weak multiscale convergence, both adapted to evo lution problems. At the end of the paper an example is given to concretize the use of the main result.
This paper is devoted to the homogenization of the heat conduction equation, with a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, having a periodically oscillating thermal conductivity and a vanishing volumetric heat capacity. A homogenization result is established by using the evolution settings of multiscale and very weak multiscale convergence. In particular, we investigate how the relation between the volumetric heat capacity and the microscopic structure effects the homogenized problem and its associated local problem. It turns out that the properties of the microscopic geometry of the proble…
This work deals with the homogenization of functionals with linear growth in the context of $\mathcal{A}$-quasiconvexity. A representation theorem is proved, where the new integrand function is obtained by solving a cell problem where the coupling between homogenization and the $\mathcal{A}$-free condition plays a crucial role. This result extends some previous work to the linear case, thus allowing for concentration effects.
This work is devoted to the study of two-scale gradient Young measures naturally arising in nonlinear elasticity homogenization problems. Precisely, a characterization of this class of measures is derived and an integral representation formula for homogenized energies, whose integrands satisfy very weak regularity assumptions, is obtained in terms of two-scale gradient Young measures.
This Note aims at presenting a simple and efficient procedure to derive the structure of high-order corrector estimates for the homogenization limit applied to a semi-linear elliptic equation posed in perforated domains. Our working technique relies on monotone iterations combined with formal two-scale homogenization asymptotics. It can be adapted to handle more complex scenarios including for instance nonlinearities posed at the boundary of perforations and the vectorial case, when the model equations are coupled only through the nonlinear production terms.
We study homogenization by Gamma-convergence of periodic multiple integrals of the calculus of variations when the integrand can take infinite values outside of a convex set of matrices.
We study stochastic homogenization for convex integral functionals $$u\mapsto \int_D W(ω,\tfrac{x}\varepsilon,\nabla u)\,\mathrm{d}x,\quad\mbox{where}\quad u:D\subset \mathbb{R}^d\to\mathbb{R}^m,$$ defined on Sobolev spaces. Assuming only stochastic integrability of the map $ω\mapsto W(ω,0,ξ)$, we prove homogenization results under two different sets of assumptions, namely $\bullet_1\quad$ $W$ satisfies superlinear growth quantified by the stochastic integrability of the Fenchel conjugate $W^*(\cdot,0,ξ)$ and a mild monotonicity condition that ensures that the functional does not increase too …
In this paper we develop some new techniques to study the multiscale elliptic equations in the form of $-\text{div} \big(A_\varepsilon \nabla u_{\varepsilon} \big) = 0$, where $A_\varepsilon(x) = A(x, x/\varepsilon_1,\cdots, x/\varepsilon_n)$ is an $n$-scale oscillating periodic coefficient matrix, and $(\varepsilon_i)_{1\le i\le n}$ are scale parameters. We show that the $C^α$-Hölder continuity with any $α\in (0,1)$ for the weak solutions is stable, namely, the constant in the estimate is uniform for arbitrary $(\varepsilon_1, \varepsilon_2, \cdots, \varepsilon_n) \in (0,1]^n$ and particularl…
The $Γ$-limit of a family of functionals $u\mapsto \int_{Ω}f\left( \frac{x}{\varepsilon },\frac{x}{\varepsilon ^{2}},D^{s}u\right) dx$ is obtained for $s=1,2$ and when the integrand $f=f\left( y,z,v\right) $ is a continous function, periodic in $y$ and $z$ and convex with respect to $v$ with nonstandard growth. The reiterated two-scale limits of second order derivative are characterized in this setting.
We prove a homogenization theorem for a class of quadratic convolution energies with random coefficients. Under suitably stated hypotheses of ergodicity and stationarity we prove that the $Γ$-limit of such energy is almost surely a deterministic quadratic Dirichlet-type integral functional, whose integrand can be characterized through an asymptotic formula. The proof of this characterization relies on results on the asymptotic behaviour of subadditive processes. The proof of the limit theorem uses a blow-up technique common for local energies, that can be extended to this `asymptotically-local…
We analyze the asymptotic behavior of a multiscale problem given by a sequence of integral functionals subject to differential constraints conveyed by a constant-rank operator with two characteristic length scales, namely the film thickness and the period of oscillating microstructures, by means of $Γ$-convergence. On a technical level, this requires a subtile merging of homogenization tools, such as multiscale convergence methods, with dimension reduction techniques for functionals subject to differential constraints. One observes that the results depend critically on the relative magnitude b…
In this paper we establish compactness results of multiscale and very weak multiscale type for sequences bounded in $L^{2}(0,T;H_{0}^{1}(Ω))$, fulfilling a certain condition. We apply the results in the homogenization of the parabolic partial differential equation $\varepsilon ^{p}\partial_{t}u_{\varepsilon }\left( x,t\right) -\nabla \cdot \left( a\left( x/\varepsilon ,x/\varepsilon ^{2},t/\varepsilon^{q},t/\varepsilon ^{r}\right) \nabla u_{\varepsilon }\left( x,t\right)\right) = f\left( x,t\right) $, where $0<p<q<r$. The homogenization result reveals two special phenomena, namely that the hom…

We analyze the $Γ$-convergence of sequences of free-discontinuity functionals arising in the modeling of linear elastic solids with surface discontinuities, including phenomena as fracture, damage, or material voids. We prove compactness with respect to $Γ$-convergence and represent the $Γ$-limit in an integral form defined on the space of generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^p$). We identify the integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas and prove a non-interaction property between bulk and surface contributions. Eventually, we investigate sequences of correspondin…
A central question in numerical homogenization of partial differential equations with multiscale coefficients is the accurate computation of effective quantities, such as the homogenized coefficients. Computing homogenized coefficients requires solving local corrector problems followed by upscaling relevant local data. The most naive way of computing homogenized coefficients is by solving a local elliptic problem, which is known to suffer from the so-called resonance error dominating all other errors inherent in multiscale computations. A far more efficient modelling strategy, based on adding …
We describe an efficient domain decomposition-based framework for nonlinear multiscale PDE problems. The framework is inspired by manifold learning techniques and exploits the tangent spaces spanned by the nearest neighbors to compress local solution manifolds. Our framework is applied to a semilinear elliptic equation with oscillatory media and a nonlinear radiative transfer equation; in both cases, significant improvements in efficacy are observed. This new method does not rely on detailed analytical understanding of the multiscale PDEs, such as their asymptotic limits, and thus is more vers…
We study the magnetic energy of magnetic polymer composite materials as the average distance between magnetic particles vanishes. We model the position of these particles in the polymeric matrix as a stochastic lattice scaled by a small parameter $\varepsilon$ and the magnets as classical $\pm 1$ spin variables interacting via an Ising type energy. Under surface scaling of the energy we prove, in terms of $Γ$-convergence that, up to subsequences, the (continuum) $Γ$-limit of these energies is finite on the set of Caccioppoli partitions representing the magnetic Weiss domains where it has a loc…
$Γ$-convergence techniques are used to give a characterization of the behavior of a family of heterogeneous multiple scale integral functionals. Periodicity, standard growth conditions and nonconvexity are assumed whereas a stronger uniform continuity with respect to the macroscopic variable, normally required in the existing literature, is avoided. An application to dimension reduction problems in reiterated homogenization of thin films is presented.

In this paper, we consider a microscopic semilinear elliptic equation posed in periodically perforated domains and associated with the Fourier-type condition on internal micro-surfaces. The first contribution of this work is the construction of a reliable linearization scheme that allows us, by a suitable choice of scaling arguments and stabilization constants, to prove the weak solvability of the microscopic model. Asymptotic behaviors of the microscopic solution with respect to the microscale parameter are thoroughly investigated in the second theme, based upon several cases of scaling. In p…
