Homotopy classes of nanowords and nanophrases are combinatorial generalizations of virtual knots and links. Goussarov, Polyak and Viro defined finite type invariants for virtual knots and links via semi-virtual crossings. We extend their definition to nanowords and nanophrases. We study finite type invariants of low degrees. In particular, we show that the linking matrix and T invariant defined by Fukunaga are finite type of degree one and degree two respectively. We also give a finite type invariant of degree 4 for open homotopy of Gauss words.
This paper is concerned with nanowords, a generalization of links, introduced by Turaev. It is shown that the system of bigraded homology groups is an invariant of nanowords by introducing a new notion. This paper gives two examples which show the independence of this invariant from some of Turaev's homotopy invariants.

The trapezoidal Fox conjecture states that the coefficient sequence of the Alexander polynomial of an alternating knot is unimodal. We are motivated by a harder question, the strong Fox conjecture, which asks whether the coefficient sequence of the Alexander polynomial of alternating knots is actually log-concave. Our approach is to introduce a polynomial $Δ(t)$ associated to a Christoffel word and to prove that its coefficient sequence is log-concave. This implies the strong Fox conjecture for two-bridge knots.
We define families of aperiodic words associated to Lorenz knots that arise naturally as syllable permutations of symbolic words corresponding to torus knots. An algorithm to construct symbolic words of satellite Lorenz knots is defined. We prove, subject to the validity of a previous conjecture, that Lorenz knots coded by some of these families of words are hyperbolic, by showing that they are neither satellites nor torus knots and making use of Thurston's theorem. We investigate cobordisms of free knots. Free knots and links are also called homotopy classes of Gauss words and phrases. We define a new strong invariant of free knots which allows to detect free knots not cobordant to the trivial one.
We discuss relations between quantum BPS invariants defined in terms of a product decomposition of certain series, and difference equations (quantum A-polynomials) that annihilate such series. We discuss a topological approach to words introduced by the author. Words on an arbitrary alphabet are approximated by Gauss words and then studied up to natural modifications inspired by the Reidemeister moves on knot diagrams. This leads us to a notion of homotopy for words. We introduce several homotopy invariants of words and give a homotopy classification of words of length five.

In 2005 V. Turaev introduced the theory of topology of words and phrases. Turaev defined an equivalence relation on generalized words and phrases which is called homotopy. This is suggested by the Reidemeister moves in the knot theory. Then Turaev gave the homotopy classification of generalized words with less than or equal to five letters. In this paper we give the classification of generalized phrases up to homotopy with less than or equal to three letters. To do this we construct a new homotopy invariant for nanophrases over any $α$.

We introduce natural language processing into the study of knot theory, as made natural by the braid word representation of knots. We study the UNKNOT problem of determining whether or not a given knot is the unknot.
