We consider holomorphic deformations of Fuchsian systems parameterized by the pole loci. It is well known that, in the case when the residue matrices are non-resonant, such a deformation is isomonodromic if and only if the residue matrices satisfy the Schlesinger system with respect to the parameter. Without the non-resonance condition this result fails: there exist non-Schlesinger isomonodromic deformations. In the present article we introduce the class of the so-called isoprincipal deformations of Fuchsian systems. Every isoprincipal deformation is also an isomonodromic one. In general, the class of the isomonodromic deformations is much richer than the class of the isoprincipal deformations, but in the non-resonant case these classes coincide. We prove that a deformation is isoprincipal if and only if the residue matrices satisfy the Schlesinger system. This theorem holds in the general case, without any assumptions on the spectra of the residue matrices of the deformation. An explicit example illustrating isomonodromic deformations, which are neither isoprincipal nor meromorphic with respect to the parameter, is also given.
In the present paper we discuss the general facts, concerning the Schlesinger system: the (τ)-function, the local factorization of solutions of Fuchsian equations and holomorphic deformations. We introduce the terminology "isoprincipal" for the deformations of Fuchsian equations with general (not necessarily non-resonant) matrix coefficients, corresponding to solutions of the Schlesinger system.
The paper is devoted to non-Schlesinger isomonodromic deformations for resonant Fuchsian systems. There are very few explicit examples of such deformations in the literature. In this paper we construct a new example of the non-Schlesinger isomonodromic deformation for a resonant Fuchsian system of order 5 by using middle convolution for a resonant Fuchsian system of order 2. Moreover, it is known that middle convolution is an operation that preserves Schlesinger's deformation equations for non-resonant Fuchsian systems. In this paper we show that Bolibruch's non-Schlesinger deformations of res…
In this second article of the series we study holomorphic families of generic rational matrix functions parameterized by the pole and zero loci. In particular, the isoprincipal deformations of generic rational matrix functions are proved to be isosemiresidual. The corresponding rational solutions of the Schlesinger system are constructed and the explicit expression for the related tau function is given. The main tool is the theory of joint system representations for rational matrix functions with prescribed pole and zero structures.
The Schlesinger equations $S_{(n,m)}$ describe monodromy preserving deformations of order $m$ Fuchsian systems with $n+1$ poles. They can be considered as a family of commuting time-dependent Hamiltonian systems on the direct product of $n$ copies of $m\times m$ matrix algebras equipped with the standard linear Poisson bracket. In this paper we address the problem of reduction of particular solutions of ``more complicated'' Schlesinger equations $S_{(n,m)}$ to ``simpler'' $S_{(n',m')}$ having $n'< n$ or $m' < m$.
In this paper we present a new canonical Hamiltonian formulation of the general Schlesinger equations $S_{(n,m)}$ for all $n$, $m$ and we compute the action of the symmetries of the Schlesinger equations in these coordinates.
Schlesinger transformations are algebraic transformations of a Fuchsian system that preserve its monodromy representation and act on the characteristic indices of the system by integral shifts. One of the important reasons to study such transformations is the relationship between Schlesinger transformations and discrete Painlevé equations; this is also the main theme behind our work. We derive \emph{discrete Schlesinger evolution equations} describing discrete dynamical systems generated by elementary Schlesinger transformations and give their discrete Hamiltonian description w.r.t.~the standa…
The aim of this paper is to establish an infinite dimensional generalization of the Schlesinger system -- a system of PDE's describing isomonodromic deformations of Fuchsian systems. This universal Schlesinger system first appeared in a paper by Korotkin and Samtleben in the finite dimensional case (i.e. when it reduces to the finite dimensional Schlesinger system). We intend here to establish it in its full generality, and to give its geometrical meaning in terms of deformations of Birkhoff factorizations. The Birkhoff factorization we are considering consists in finding a piecewise holomorph…
We present two examples of reductions from the evolution equations describing discrete Schlesinger transformations of Fuchsian systems to difference Painlevé equations: difference Painlevé equation d-$P\left({A}_{2}^{(1)*}\right)$ with the symmetry group ${E}^{(1)}_{6}$ and difference Painlevé equation d-$P\left({A}_{1}^{(1)*}\right)$ with the symmetry group ${E}^{(1)}_{7}$. In both cases we describe in detail how to compute their Okamoto space of the initial conditions and emphasize the role played by geometry in helping us to understand the structure of the reduction, a choice of a good coor…
We introduce a way of presentation of pairs $(E,\nabla)$, where $E$ is a bundle on a Riemann surface and $\nabla$ is a logarithmic connection in $E$, which is based on a presentation of the surface as a factor of the exterior of the unit disc. In this presentation we write the local equation of isomonodormic deformation of pairs $(E,\nabla)$. These conditions are written as a modified Schlesinger system on a Riemann sphere (and in the typical case just as an ordinary Schlesinger system) plus some linear system.
Some of the main results of [Cotti G., Dubrovin B., Guzzetti D., Duke Math. J., to appear, arXiv:1706.04808], concerning non-generic isomonodromy deformations of a certain linear differential system with irregular singularity and coalescing eigenvalues, are reviewed from the point of view of Pfaffian systems, making a distinction between weak and strong isomonodromic deformations. Such distinction has a counterpart in the case of Fuchsian systems, which is well known as Schlesinger and non-Schlesinger deformations, reviewed in Appendix A.
For the Schlesinger-type equation related to the fifth Painlevé equation (V) via isomonodromy deformation, we present a three-parameter family of matrix solutions along the imaginary axis near the point at infinity, and also the corresponding monodromy data. Two-parameter solutions of (V) with their monodromy data immediately follow from our results. Under certain conditions, these solutions of (V) admit sequences of zeros and of poles along the imaginary axis. The monodromy data are obtained by matching techniques for a perturbed linear system.
The UC hierarchy is an extension of the KP hierarchy, which possesses not only an infinite set of positive time evolutions but also that of negative ones. Through a similarity reduction we derive from the UC hierarchy a class of the Schlesinger systems including the Garnier system and the sixth Painleve equation, which describes the monodromy preserving deformations of Fuchsian linear differential equations with certain spectral types. We also present a unified formulation of the above Schlesinger systems as a canonical Hamiltonian system whose Hamiltonian functions are polynomials in the cano…
We give a geometric proof to the classical fact that the dimension of the deformations of a given generic Fuchsian equation without changing the semi-simple conjugacy class of its local monodromies (``number of accessory parameters'') is equal to half the dimension of the moduli space of deformations of the associated local system. We do this by constructing a weight 1 Hodge structure on the infinitesimal deformations of logarithmic connections, such that deformations as an equation correspond to the $(1,0)$-part. This answers a question of Nicholas Katz, who noticed the dimension doubling men…
We develop an underlying relationship between the theory of rational approximations and that of isomonodromic deformations. We show that a certain duality in Hermite's two approximation problems for functions leads to the Schlesinger transformations, i.e. transformations of a linear differential equation shifting its characteristic exponents by integers while keeping its monodromy invariant. Since approximants and remainders are described by block-Toeplitzs determinants, one can clearly understand the determinantal structure in isomonodromic deformations. We demonstrate our method in a certain…
We consider a Pfaffian system expressing isomonodromy of an irregular system of Okubo type, depending on complex deformation parameters u=(u_1,...,u_n), which are eigenvalues of the leading matrix at the irregular singuilarity. At the same time, we consider a Pfaffian system of non-normalized Schlesinger type expressing isomonodromy of a Fuchsian system, whose poles are the deformation parameters u_1,...,u_n. The parameters vary in a polydisc containing a coalescence locus for the eigenvalues of the leading matrix of the irregular system, corresponding to confluence of the Fuchsian singulariti…
Motivated by a remark and a question of Nicholas Katz, we characterize the tangent space of the space of Fuchsian equations with given generic exponents inside the corresponding moduli space of logarithmic connections: we construct a weight 1 Hodge structure on the tangent space of the moduli of logarithmic connections such that deformations of Fuchsian equations correspond to the $(1,0)$-part.
In our previous works, a relationship between Hermite's two approximation problems and Schlesinger transformations of linear differential equations has been clarified. In this paper, we study tau-functions associated with holonomic deformations of linear differential equations by using Hermite's two approximation problems. As a result, we present a determinant formula for the ratio of tau-functions (tau-quotient).
We focus on Fuchsian equations with four accessory parameters and three singular points. We see that the Fuchsian equations admit a "degeneration scheme" in some sense, which is expected to give rise to a degeneration scheme of discrete isomodromic deformation equations with four-dimensional phase space. We compute an example of discrete isomonodromic deformation equations of a certain Fuchsian equation.
We study movable singularities of Garnier systems using the connection of the latter with isomonodromic deformations of Fuchsian systems. Questions on the existence of solutions for some inverse monodromy problems are also considered.
We consider deformations of a differential system with Poincare' rank 1 at infinity and Fuchsian singularity at zero along a stratum of a coalescence locus. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the deformation to be strongly isomonodromic, both as an explicit Pfaffian system (integrable deformation) and as a non linear system of PDEs on the residue matrix A at the Fuchsian singularity. This construction is complementary to that of [13]. For the specific system here considered, the results generalize those of [26], by giving up the generic conditions, and those of [3], by giving up t…
Several results on Heun's equation are generalized to a certain class of Fuchsian differential equations. Namely, we obtain integral representations of solutions and develop Hermite-Krichever Ansatz on them. In particular, we investigate linear differential equations that produce Painlevé equation by monodromy preserving deformation and obtain solutions of the sixth Painlevé equation which include Hitchin's solution. The relationship with finite-gap potential is also discussed.
The higher order Painleve system of type D^{(1)}_{2n+2} was proposed by Y. Sasano as an extension of the sixth Painleve equation for the affine Weyl group symmetry with the aid of algebraic geometry for Okamoto initial value space. In this article, we give it as the monodromy preserving deformation of a Fuchsian system.
We present a geometric setting for the differential Galois theory of $G$-invariant connections with parameters. As an application of some classical results on differential algebraic groups and Lie algebra bundles, we see that the Galois group of a connection with parameters with simple structural group $G$ is determined by its isomonodromic deformations. This allows us to compute the Galois groups with parameters of the general Fuchsian special linear system and of Gauss hypergeometric equation.
Several results including integral representation of solutions and Hermite-Krichever Ansatz on Heun's equation are generalized to a certain class of Fuchsian differential equations, and they are applied to equations which are related with physics. We investigate linear differential equations that produce Painlevé equation by monodromy preserving deformation and obtain solutions of the sixth Painlevé equation which include Hitchin's solution. The relationship with finite-gap potential is also discussed. We find new finite-gap potentials. Namely, we show that the potential which is written as th…
We consider a degeneration of the $q$-matrix sixth Painlevé system. As a result, we obtain a system of non-linear $q$-difference equations, which describes a deformation of a certain non-Fuchsian linear $q$-difference system. We define the spectral type for non-Fuchsian $q$-difference systems and characterize the associated linear problem in terms of the spectral type. We also consider a continuous limit of the non-linear $q$-difference system and show that the resulting system of non-linear differential equations coincides with the matrix fifth Painlevé system.
We consider a 3-dimensional Pfaffian system, whose z-component is a differential system with irregular singularity at infinity and Fuchsian at zero. In the first part of the paper, we prove that its Frobenius integrability is equivalent to the sixth Painlevé equation PVI. The coefficients of the system will be explicitly written in terms of the solutions of PVI. In this way, we remake a result of [44, 61]. We then express in terms of the Stokes matrices of the 3x3 irregular system the monodromy invariants p_{jk}=Tr(M_jM_k) of the 2-dimensional isomonodromic Fuchsian system with four singularit…
In literature, it is known that any solution of Painlevé VI equation governs the isomonodromic deformation of a second order linear Fuchsian ODE on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$. In this paper, we extend this isomonodromy theory on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$ to the moduli space of elliptic curves by studying the isomonodromic deformation of the generalized Lamé equation. Among other things, we prove that the isomonodromic equation is a new Hamiltonian system, which is equivalent to the elliptic form of Painlevé VI equation for generic parameters. For Painlevé VI equation with some special parameters, the isomonodr…
We derive a $q$-analogue of the matrix sixth Painlevé system via a connection-preserving deformation of a certain Fuchsian linear $q$-difference system. In specifying the linear $q$-difference system, we utilize the correspondence between linear differential systems and linear $q$-difference systems from the viewpoint of the spectral type. The system of non-linear $q$-difference equations thus obtained can also be regarded as a non-abelian analogue of Jimbo-Sakai's $q$-$P_{\mathrm{VI}}$.
We consider an $n\times n$ linear system of ODEs with an irregular singularity of Poincaré rank 1 at $z=\infty$, holomorphically depending on parameter $t$ within a polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$ centred at $t=0$. The eigenvalues of the leading matrix at $z=\infty$ coalesce along a locus $Δ$ contained in the polydisc, passing through $t=0$. Namely, $z=\infty$ is a resonant irregular singularity for $t\in Δ$. We analyse the case when the leading matrix remains diagonalisable at $Δ$. We discuss the existence of fundamental matrix solutions, their asymptotics, Stokes phenomenon and monodromy data as …
We consider the squared singular values of the product of $M$ standard complex Gaussian matrices. Since the squared singular values form a determinantal point process with a particular Meijer G-function kernel, the gap probabilities are given by a Fredholm determinant based on this kernel. It was shown by Strahov \cite{St14} that a hard edge scaling limit of the gap probabilities is described by Hamiltonian differential equations which can be formulated as an isomonodromic deformation system similar to the theory of the Kyoto school. We generalize this result to the case of finite matrices by …
