In this paper, the relation between algebraic shifting and join which was conjectured by Eran Nevo will be proved. Let $σ$ and $τ$ be simplicial complexes and $σ* τ$ their join. Let $J_σ$ be the exterior face ideal of $σ$ and $Δ(σ)$ the exterior algebraic shifted complex of $σ$. Assume that $σ* τ$ is a simplicial complex on $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$. For any $d$-subset $S \subset [n]$, let $m_{\preceq_{rev} S}(σ)$ denote the number of $d$-subsets $R \in σ$ which is equal to or smaller than $S$ w.r.t. the reverse lexicographic order. We will prove that $m_{\preceq_{rev} S}(Δ({σ* τ}))\geq m_{\preceq_{rev} S}(Δ({Δ(σ)} * {Δ(τ)}))$ for all $S \subset [n]$. To prove this fact, we also prove that $m_{\preceq_{rev} S}(Δ(σ))\geq m_{\preceq_{rev} S}(Δ({Δ_ϕ(σ)}))$ for all $S\subset [n]$ and for all non-singular matrices $ϕ$, where $Δ_ϕ(σ)$ is the simplicial complex defined by $J_{Δ_ϕ(σ)}=\init(ϕ(J_σ))$.
We try to understand the behavior of exterior algebraic shifting with respect to basic constructions on simplicial complexes, like union and join. In particular we give a complete combinatorial description of the shifting of a disjoint union, and more generally of a union along a simplex, in terms of the shifting of its components. As a corollary, we prove the following, conjectured by Kalai: $Δ(K \cup L) = Δ(Δ(K) \cup Δ(L))$, where $K,L$ are complexes, $\cup$ means disjoint union, and $Δ$ is the exterior shifting operator. We give an example showing that replacing the operation 'union' with t…
A family $\mathcal{A}$ of sets is {\it $t$-intersecting} if the cardinality of the intersection of every pair of sets in $\mathcal{A}$ is at least $t$, and is an {\it $r$-family} if every set in $\mathcal{A}$ has cardinality $r$. A well-known theorem of Erdős, Ko, and Rado bounds the cardinality of a $t$-intersecting $r$-family of subsets of an $n$-element set, or equivalently of $(r-1)$-dimensional faces of a simplex with $n$ vertices. As a generalization of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, Borg presented a conjecture concerning the size of a $t$-intersecting $r$-family of faces of an arbitrary sim…
This thesis focuses on algebraic shifting and its applications to f-vector theory of simplicial complexes and more general graded posets. In particular, several approaches and partial results concerning the g-conjecture for simplicial spheres are presented here.
A recent framework for generalizing the Erdos-Ko-Rado Theorem, due to Holroyd, Spencer, and Talbot, defines the Erdos-Ko-Rado property for a graph in terms of the graph's independent sets. Since the family of all independent sets of a graph forms a simplicial complex, it is natural to further generalize the Erdos-Ko-Rado property to an arbitrary simplicial complex. An advantage of working in simplicial complexes is the availability of algebraic shifting, a powerful shifting (compression) technique, which we use to verify a conjecture of Holroyd and Talbot in the case of sequentially Cohen-Maca…
We show that the $h$-vector of a $2$-dimensional PS ear-decomposable simplicial complex is a pure $\mathcal{O}$-sequence. This provides a strengthening of Stanley's conjecture for matroid $h$-vectors in rank $3$. Our approach modifies the approach of combinatorial shifting for arbitrary simplicial complexes to the setting of $2$-dimensional PS ear-decomposable complexes, which allows us to greedily construct a corresponding pure multicomplex.
We investigate the shellability of the polyhedral join $\mathcal{Z}^*_M (K, L)$ of simplicial complexes $K, M$ and a subcomplex $L \subset K$. We give sufficient conditions and necessary conditions on $(K, L)$ for $\mathcal{Z}^*_M (K, L)$ being shellable. In particular, we show that for some pairs $(K, L)$, $\mathcal{Z}^*_M (K, L)$ becomes shellable regardless of whether $M$ is shellable or not. Polyhedral joins can be applied to graph theory as the independence complex of a certain generalized version of lexicographic products of graphs which we define in this paper. The graph obtained from t…
It could be expected that the moment-angle complex associated with a Golod simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to a suspension space. In this paper, we provide a counter example to this expectation. We have discovered this complex through the studies of the Golod property of the Alexander dual of a join of simplicial complexes, and that of a union of simplicial complexes.
Inspired by the work of Izakhian and Rhodes, a theory of representation of hereditary collections by boolean matrices is developed. This corresponds to representation by finite $\vee$-generated lattices. The lattice of flats, defined for hereditary collections, lattices and matrices, plays a central role in the theory. The representations constitute a lattice and the minimal and strictly join irreducible elements are studied, as well as various closure operators.
We determine a term order on the monomials in the variables $\varx{i}{j}$, $1 \leq i < j \leq n$, such that corresponding initial ideal of the ideal of Pfaffians of degree $r$ of a generic $n$ by $n$ skew-symmetric matrix is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a join of a simplicial sphere and a simplex. Moreover, we demonstrate that the Pfaffians of the $2r$ by $2r$ skew-symmetric submatrices form a Gröbner basis for the given term order. The same methods and similar term orders as for the Pfaffians also yield squarefree initial ideals for certain determinantal ideals. Yet, in contrast to the case o…
The "simplicial complexes" and "join" (*) today used within combinatorics aren't the classical concepts, cf. Spanier (1966) p. 108-9, but, exept for \emptyset, complexes having {\emptyset} as a subcomplex resp. \Sigma1 * \Sigma2 := {\sigma1 \cup \sigma2 | \sigmai \in \Sigmai} implying a tacit change of unit element w.r.t. the join operation, from \emptyset to {\emptyset}. Extending the classical realization functor to this category of simplicial complexes we end up with a "restricted" category of topological spaces, "containing" the classical and where the classical (co)homology theory, as wel…
For a simplicial complex K on m vertices and simplicial complexes K1,...,Km a composed simplicial complex K(K1,...,Km) is introduced. This construction generalizes an iterated simplicial wedge construction studied by A. Bahri, M. Bendersky, F. R. Cohen and S. Gitler and allows to describe the combinatorics of generalized joins of polytopes P(P1,...,Pm) defined by G. Agnarsson. The composition defines a structure of an operad on a set of finite simplicial complexes. We prove the following: (1) a composed complex K(K1,...,Km) is a simplicial sphere iff K is a simplicial sphere and Ki are the bou…
We show that if the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ associated to a simplicial complex $K$ is homotopy equivalent to a connected sum of sphere products with two spheres in each product, then $K$ decomposes as the simplicial join of an $n$-simplex $Δ^n$ and a minimally non-Golod complex. In particular, we prove that $K$ is minimally non-Golod for every moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ homeomorphic to a connected sum of two-fold products of spheres, answering a question of Grbić, Panov, Theriault and Wu.
In this paper, we study the combinatorics of a certain minimal factorization of the elements in a finite lattice $L$ called the canonical join representation. The join $\bigvee A =w$ is the canonical join representation of $w$ if $A$ is the unique lowest subset of $L$ satisfying $\bigvee A=w$ (where "lowest" is made precise by comparing order ideals under containment). When each element in $L$ has a canonical join representation, we define the canonical join complex to be the abstract simplicial complex of subsets $A$ such that $\bigvee A$ is a canonical join representation. We characterize th…
We consider a certain class of simplicial complexes which includes the independence complexes of forests. We show that if a simplicial complex $K$ belongs to this class, then the polyhedral join $\mathcal{Z}^*_{K}(\underline{X}, \emptyset)$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of CW complexes of the form $Σ^r X_{i_1} * X_{i_2} * \cdots * X_{i_k}$, where $\underline{X}$ is a family $\{X_i\}_{i \in V(K)}$ of CW complexes and $Σ$ denotes the unreduced suspension. This result is applied to study the homotopy type of the independence complex of the lexicographic product $G[H]$ of a graph $H$ over …
The canonical join complex of a semidistributive lattice is a simplicial complex whose faces are canonical join representations of elements of the semidistributive lattice. We give a combinatorial classification of the faces of the canonical join complex of the lattice of biclosed sets of segments supported by a tree, as introduced by the third author and McConville. We also use our classification to describe the elements of the shard intersection order of the lattice of biclosed sets. As a consequence, we prove that this shard intersection order is a lattice.
Given any order ideal $U$ consisting of color-squarefree monomials involving variables with $d$ colors, we associate to it a balanced $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)$ that we call a balanced squeezed complex. In fact, these complexes have properties similar to squeezed balls as introduced by Kalai and the more general squeezed complexes, introduced by the authors. We show that any balanced squeezed complex is vertex-decomposable and that its flag $h$-vector can be read off from the underlying order ideal. Moreover, we describe explicitly its Stanley-Reisner ideal $I…
We introduce and study a $d$-dimensional generalization of Hamiltonian cycles in graphs - the Hamiltonian $d$-cycles in $K_n^d$ (the complete simplicial $d$-complex over a vertex set of size $n$). Those are the simple $d$-cycles of a complete rank, or, equivalently, of size $1 + {{n-1} \choose d}$. The discussion is restricted to the fields $F_2$ and $Q$. For $d=2$, we characterize the $n$'s for which Hamiltonian $2$-cycles exist. For $d=3$ it is shown that Hamiltonian $3$-cycles exist for infinitely many $n$'s. In general, it is shown that there always exist simple $d$-cycles of size ${{n-1} …
We study the average simplex cardinality Dim^+(G) = sum_x |x|/(|G|+1) of a finite abstract simplicial complex G. The functional is a homomorphism from the monoid of simplicial complexes to the rationals: the formula Dim^+(G + H) = Dim^+(G) + Dim^+(H) holds for the join + similarly as for the augmented inductive dimension dim^+(G) = dim(G)+1 where dim is the inductive dimension dim(G) = 1+ sum_x dim(S(x))/|G| with unit sphere S(x) (a recent theorem of Betre and Salinger). In terms of the generating function f(t) = 1+v_0 t + v_1 t^2 + ... +v_d t^(d+1) defined by the f-vector (v_0,v_1, \dots) of …
In their paper proving the Hirsch bound for flag normal simplicial complexes (Math. Oper.~Res.~2014) Adiprasito and Benedetti define the notion of~\emph{combinatorial segment}. The study of the maximal length of these objects provides the upper bound~$O(n2^d)$ for the diameter of any normal pure simplicial complex of dimension~$d$ with~$n$ vertices, and the Hirsch bound $n-d$ if the complexes are, moreover, flag. In the present article, we propose a formulation of combinatorial segments which is equivalent but more local, by introducing the notions of monotonicity and conservativeness of dual …
A Bier sphere $Bier(K) = K\ast_ΔK^\circ$, defined as the deleted join of a simplicial complex and its Alexander dual $K^\circ$, is a purely combinatorial object (abstract simplicial complex). Here we study a hidden geometry of Bier spheres by describing their natural geometric realizations, compute their volume, describe an effective criterion for their polytopality, and associate to $K$ a natural fan $Fan(K)$, related to the Braid fan. Along the way we establish a connection of Bier spheres of maximal volume with recent generalizations of the classical Van Kampen-Flores theorem and clarify th…

We define a ring R of geometric objects G generated by finite abstract simplicial complexes. To every G belongs Hodge Laplacian H as the square of the Dirac operator determining its cohomology and a unimodular connection matrix L). The sum of the matrix entries of the inverse of L is the Euler characteristic. The spectra of H as well as inductive dimension add under multiplication while the spectra of L multiply. The nullity of the Hodge of H are the Betti numbers which can now be signed. The map assigning to G its Poincare polynomial is a ring homomorphism from R the polynomials. Especially t…
We prove two recent conjectures on some upper bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the binomial edge ideals of some different classes of graphs. We prove the conjecture of Matsuda and Murai for graphs which has a cut edge or a simplicial vertex, and hence for chordal graphs. We determine the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of the join of graphs in terms of the regularity of the original graphs, and consequently prove the conjecture of Matsuda and Murai for such a graph, and hence for complete $t$-partite graphs. We also generalize some results of Schenzel and Zafar about comp…
Rowmotion is a simple cyclic action on the distributive lattice of order ideals of a poset: it sends the order ideal x to the order ideal generated by the minimal elements not in x. It can also be computed in "slow motion" as a sequence of local moves. We use the setting of trim lattices to generalize both definitions of rowmotion, proving many structural results along the way. We introduce a flag simplicial complex (similar to the canonical join complex of a semidistributive lattice), and relate our results to recent work of Barnard by proving that extremal semidistributive lattices are trim.…
