In this paper continuity theorems are established for the number of losses during a busy period of the $M/M/1/n$ queue. We consider an $M/GI/1/n$ queueing system where the service time probability distribution, slightly different in a certain sense from the exponential distribution, is approximated by that exponential distribution. Continuity theorems are obtained in the form of one or two-sided stochastic inequalities. The paper shows how the bounds of these inequalities are changed if further assumptions, associated with specific properties of the service time distribution (precisely described in the paper), are made. Specifically, some parametric families of service time distributions are discussed, and the paper establishes uniform estimates (given for all possible values of the parameter) and local estimates (where the parameter is fixed and takes only the given value). The analysis of the paper is based on the level crossing approach and some characterization properties of the exponential distribution.
This paper studies a closed queueing network containing a hub (a state dependent queueing system with service depending on the number of units residing here) and $k$ satellite stations, which are $GI/M/1$ queueing systems. The number of units in the system, $N$, is assumed to be large. After service completion in the hub, a unit visits a satellite station $j$, $1\leq j\leq k$, with probability $p_j$, and, after the service completion there, returns to the hub. The parameters of service times in the satellite stations and in the hub are proportional to $\frac{1}{N}$. One of the satellite statio…
We establish continuity of the integral representation $y(t)=x(t)+\int_0^th(y(s)) ds$, $t\ge0$, mapping a function $x$ into a function $y$ when the underlying function space $D$ is endowed with the Skorohod $M_1$ topology. We apply this integral representation with the continuous mapping theorem to establish heavy-traffic stochastic-process limits for many-server queueing models when the limit process has jumps unmatched in the converging processes as can occur with bursty arrival processes or service interruptions. The proof of $M_1$-continuity is based on a new characterization of the $M_1$ …
In this paper we establish strong embedding theorems, in the sense of the Komlos-Major-Tusnady framework, for the performance metrics of a general class of transitory queueing models of nonstationary queueing systems. The nonstationary and non-Markovian nature of these models makes the computation of performance metrics hard. The strong embeddings yield error bounds on sample path approximations by diffusion processes, in the form of functional strong approximation theorems.
The rise of electric vehicles (EVs) is unstoppable due to factors such as the decreasing cost of batteries and various policy decisions. These vehicles need to be charged and will therefore cause congestion in local distribution grids in the future. Motivated by this, we consider a charging station with finitely many parking spaces, in which electric vehicles arrive in order to get charged. An EV has a random parking time and a random charging time. Both the charging rate per vehicle and the charging rate possible for the station are assumed to be limited. Thus, the charging rate of uncharged …
This paper studies a scheduling control problem for a single-server multiclass queueing network in heavy traffic, operating in a changing environment. The changing environment is modeled as a finite state Markov process that modulates the arrival and service rates in the system. Various cases are considered: fast changing environment, fixed environment and slow changing environment. In each of the cases, using weak convergence analysis, in particular functional limit theorems for renewal processes and ergodic Markov processes, it is shown that an appropriate "averaged" version of the classical…
In this paper, we study the existence of the random fixed points under mild continuity assumptions. The main theorems consider the almost lower semicontinuous operators defined on Frechet spaces and also operators having properties weaker than lower semicontinuity. Our results either extend or improve corresponding ones present in literature.
The purpose of this note is to prove a central limit theorem for the $L^3$-modulus of continuity of the Brownian local time using techniques of stochastic analysis. The main ingredients of the proof are an asymptotic version of Knight's theorem and the Clark-Ocone formula for the $L^3$-modulus of the Brownian local time.
In this paper, we prove a characterization theorem on the number of losses during a busy period in $GI^X/GI^Y/1/n$ queueing systems, in which interarrival time distribution belongs to the class NWUE.
In this note, we recall main properties of generalized random fields and present a proof of the continuity theorem of Paul Lévy for generalized random fields in the space of tempered distributions. This theorem was first proved by Fernique (1968) in a more general setting. The aim of this note is to provide a self-contained proof that in particular avoids the abstract theory of nuclear spaces.
In this note we present a new short and direct proof of Lévy's continuity theorem in arbitrary dimension $d$, which does not rely on Prohorov's theorem, Helly's selection theorem or the uniqueness theorem for characteristic functions. Instead, it is based on convolution with a small (scalar) Gaussian distribution as well as on basic facts about weak convergence and measure theory. Moreover, we show how, by similar means, one may prove the fact that a distribution with integrable characteristic function is absolutely continuous with respect to $d$-dimensional Lebesgue measure and derive the for…
The Laplace transforms of positive measures on $\mathbb{R}_{+}$ converge if and only if their distribution functions converge at continuity points of the limiting measure. We extend this classical continuity theorem to the case of generalised signed Radon measures. The result for the signed case requires some additional conditions, which follow from recent results on vague convergence of signed Radon measures. As an application, we introduce a novel Tauberian condition for generalised signed Radon measures that extends Karamata's Tauberian theorem.
We generalize the Kolmogorov continuity theorem and prove the continuity of a class of stochastic fields with the parameter. As an application, we derive the continuity of solutions for nonlocal stochastic parabolic equations driven by non-Gaussian Lévy noises.
We give a stochastic generalization of transport theorem on smooth manifold. Furthermore, we deduce a system of continuity equation and present some application on torus.
We introduce a framework and develop a theory of transitory queueing models. These are models that are not only non-stationary and time-varying but also have other features such as the queueing system operates over finite time, or only a finite population arrives. Such models are relevant in many real-world settings, from queues at post-offces, DMV, concert halls and stadia to out-patient departments at hospitals. We develop fluid and diffusion limits for a large class of transitory queueing models. We then introduce three specific models that fit within this framework, namely, the Delta(i)/GI…
A version of the Kolmogorov-Chentsov theorem on sample differentiability and Hölder continuity of random fields on domains of cone type is proved, and the result is generalized to manifolds.
Multiclass open queueing networks find wide applications in communication, computer and fabrication networks. Often one is interested in steady-state performance measures associated with these networks. Conceptually, under mild conditions, a regenerative structure exists in multiclass networks, making them amenable to regenerative simulation for estimating the steady-state performance measures. However, typically, identification of a regenerative structure in these networks is difficult. A well known exception is when all the interarrival times are exponentially distributed, where the instants…
In this article we provide a proof of the so called absolute continuity theorem for random dynamical systems on $R^d$ which have an invariant probability measure. First we present the construction of local stable manifolds in this case. Then the absolute continuity theorem basically states that for any two transversal manifolds to the family of local stable manifolds the induced Lebesgue measures on these transversal manifolds are absolutely continuous under the map that transports every point on the first manifold along the local stable manifold to the second manifold, the so-called Poincaré …
We introduce the notion of linear multifractional stable sheets in the broad sense (LMSS) with $α\in(0,2]$, to include both linear multifractional Brownian sheets ($α=2$) and linear multifractional stable sheets ($α<2$). The purpose of the present paper is to study the existence and joint continuity of the local times of LMSS, and also the local Hölder condition of the local times in the set variable. Among the main results of this paper, Theorem 2.4 provides a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of local times of LMSS; Theorem 3.1 shows a sufficient condition for the joint co…
This article is concerned with modulus of continuity of Brownian local times. Specifically, we focus on 3 closely related problems: (a) Limit theorem for a Brownian modulus of continuity involving Riesz potentials, where the limit law is an intricate Gaussian mixture. (b) Central limit theorems for the projections of L2 modulus of continuity for a 1-dimensional Brownian motion. (c) Extension of the second result to a 2-dimensional Brownian motion. Our proofs rely on a combination of stochastic calculus and Malliavin calculus tools, plus a thorough analysis of singular integrals.
In this thesis, we study the queueing systems with heterogeneous servers and service rate uncertainty under the Halfin-Whitt heavy traffic regime. First, we analyse many server queues with abandonments when service rates are i.i.d. random variables. We derive a diffusion approximation using a novel method. The diffusion has a random drift, and hence depending on the realisations of service rates, the system can be in Quality Driven (QD), Efficiency Driven (ED) or Quality-Efficiency-Driven (QED) regime. When the system is under QD or QED regime, the abandonments are negligible in the fluid limi…
In this paper we prove an approximate continuity result for stochastic differential equations with normal reflections in domains satisfying Saisho's conditions, which together with the Wong-Zakai approximation result completes the support theorem for such diffusions in the uniform convergence topology. Also by adapting Millet and Sanz-Solé's idea, we characterize in Hölder norm the support of diffusions reflected in domains satisfying the Lions-Sznitman conditions by proving limit theorems of adapted interpolations. Finally we apply the support theorem to establish a boundary-interior maximum …
We devise an abstract, modular scheme to prove continuity of the Lyapunov exponents for a general class of linear cocycles. The main assumption is the availability of appropriate large deviation type (LDT) estimates which are uniform in the data. We provide a modulus of continuity that depends explicitly on the sharpness of the LDT estimate. Our method uses an inductive procedure based on the deterministic, general Avalanche Principle in [4]. The main advantage of this approach, besides the fact that it provides quantitative estimates, is its versatility, as it applies to quasi-periodic cocycl…
We establish a compactness result in approach theory which we apply to obtain a generalization of Prokhorov's Theorem for the continuity approach structure.
We prove limit theorems for cylindrical martingale problems associated to Lévy generators. Furthermore, we give sufficient and necessary conditions for the Feller property of well-posed problems with continuous coefficients. We discuss two applications. First, we derive continuity and linear growth conditions for the existence of weak solutions to infinite-dimensional stochastic differential equations driven by Lévy noise. Second, we derive continuity, local boundedness and linear growth conditions for limit theorems and the Feller property of weak solutions to stochastic partial differential …
This paper constructs a solvability theory for a system of stochastic partial differential equations. On account of the Kolmogorov continuity theorem, solutions are looked for in certain Hölder-type classes in which a random field is treated as a space-time function taking values in $L^{p}$-space of random variables. A modified stochastic parabolicity condition involving $p$ is proposed to ensure the finiteness of the associated norm of the solution, which is showed to be sharp by examples. The Schauder-type estimates and the solvability theorem are proved.
We consider a semi-open queueing network (SOQN), where a customer requires exactly one resource from the resource pool for service. If there is a resource available, the customer is immediately served and the resource enters an inner network. If there is no resource available, the new customer has to wait in an external queue until one becomes available ("backordering"). When a resource exits the inner network, it is returned to the resource pool and waits for another customer. In this paper, we present a new solution approach. To approximate the inner network with the resource pool of the SOQ…
Continuity of local time for Brownian motion ranks among the most notable mathematical results in the theory of stochastic processes. This article addresses its implications from the point of view of applications. In particular an extension of previous results on an explicit role of continuity of (natural) local time is obtained for applications to recent classes of problems in physics, biology and finance involving discontinuities in a dispersion coefficient. The main theorem and its corollary provide physical principles that relate macro scale continuity of deterministic quantities to micro …
We determine a weaker sufficient condition than that of Theorem 5.2.1 in Fleming and Soner (2006) for the continuity of the value functions of stochastic exit time control problems.
We give a stochastic calculus proof of the Central Limit Theorem \[ {\int (L^{x+h}_{t}- L^{x}_{t})^{2} dx- 4ht\over h^{3/2}} \stackrel{\mathcal{L}}{\Longrightarrow}c(\int (L^{x}_{t})^{2} dx)^{1/2} η\] as $h\to 0$ for Brownian local time $L^{x}_{t}$. Here $η$ is an independent normal random variable with mean zero and variance one.
We provide a sufficient condition for the continuity of real valued permanental processes. When applied to the subclass of permanental processes which consists of squares of Gaussian processes, we obtain the sufficient condition for continuity which is also known to be necessary. Using an isomorphism theorem of Eisenbaum and Kaspi which relates Markov local times and permanental processes, we obtain a general sufficient condition for the joint continuity of local times.
Prolongating our previous paper on the Einstein relation, we study the motion of a particle diffusing in a random reversible environment when subject to a small external forcing. In order to describe the long time behavior of the particle, we introduce the notions of steady state and weak steady state. We establish the continuity of weak steady states for an ergodic and uniformly elliptic environment. When the environment has finite range of dependence, we prove the existence of the steady state and weak steady state and compute its derivative at a vanishing force. Thus we obtain a complete "F…
We consider a stationary fluid queue with fractional Brownian motion input. Conditional on the workload at time zero being greater than a large value $b$, we provide the limiting distribution for the amount of time that the workload process spends above level $b$ over the busy cycle straddling the origin, as $b\to\infty$. Our results can be interpreted as showing that long delays occur in large clumps of size of order $b^{2-1/H}$. The conditional limit result involves a finer scaling of the queueing process than fluid analysis, thereby departing from previous related literature.
We consider a single server system with infinite waiting room in a random environment. The service system and the environment interact in both directions. Whenever the environment enters a prespecified subset of its state space the service process is completely blocked: Service is interrupted and newly arriving customers are lost. We prove an if-and-only-if-condition for a product form steady state distribution of the joint queueing-environment process. A consequence is a strong insensitivity property for such systems. We discuss several applications, e.g. from inventory theory and reliability…
