A Skolem sequence is a sequence a_1,a_2,...,a_2n (where a_i \in A = {1,...,n }), each a_i occurs exactly twice in the sequence and the two occurrences are exactly a_i positions apart. A set A that can be used to construct Skolem sequences is called a Skolem set. The problem of deciding which sets of the form A = {1,...,n} are Skolem sets was solved by Thoralf Skolem in the late 1950's. We study the natural generalization where A is allowed to be any set of n positive integers. We give necessary conditions for the existence of Skolem sets of this generalized form. We conjecture these necessary conditions to be sufficient, and give computational evidence in favor of our conjecture. We investigate special cases of the conjecture and prove that the conjecture hold for some of them. We also study enumerative questions and show that this problem has strong connections with problems related to permutation displacements.
A Skolem sequence is a linear arrangement of the multiset, {1, 1, 2, 2, ..., n, n} such that if r in [n] appears in positions i and j, then |i-j| = r. We first translate the problem to a particular set of perfect matchings, then apply the method of generating trees for open arc diagrams to generate exhaustively all Skolem sequences of a given size. Tracking the arc length between pairs of vertices in an arc annotated diagram is the central task. Although we do not surpass previously known enumerative results, this method drastically reduces the search space compared to previously known methods…
The subject of this note is a challenging conjecture about X-rays of permutations which is a special case of a conjecture regarding Skolem sequences. In relation to this, Brualdi and Fritscher [Linear Algebra and its Applications, 2014] posed the following problem: Determine a bijection between extremal Skolem sets and binary Hankel X-rays of permutation matrices. We give such a bijection, along with some related observations.
We study a family of graphs with diameter two and asymptotically optimal order for their maximum degree, obtained from perfect difference sets. We show that for all known examples of perfect difference sets, the graph we obtain is isomorphic to one of the Brown graphs, a well-known family of graphs in the degree-diameter problem.
In this paper we present a complete characterization of the smallest sets which block all the simple perfect matchings in a complete convex geometric graph on $2m$ vertices. In particular, we show that all these sets are caterpillar graphs with a special structure, and that their total number is $m \cdot 2^{m-1}$.
We study the structure of a minimum dominating set of $C_{2n+1}^n$, the Cartesian product of $n$ copies of the cycle of size $2n+1$, where $2n+1$ is a prime.
In a graph $Γ$ with vertex set $V$, a subset $C$ of $V$ is called an $(a,b)$-perfect set if every vertex in $C$ has exactly $a$ neighbors in $C$ and every vertex in $V\setminus C$ has exactly $b$ neighbors in $C$, where $a$ and $b$ are nonnegative integers. In the literature $(0,1)$-perfect sets are known as perfect codes and $(1,1)$-perfect sets are known as total perfect codes. In this paper we prove that, for any finite group $G$, if a non-trivial normal subgroup $H$ of $G$ is a perfect code in some Cayley graph of $G$, then it is also an $(a,b)$-perfect set in some Cayley graph of $G$ for …

Consider the family of all perfect matchings of the complete graph $K_{2n}$ with $2n$ vertices. Given any collection $\mathcal M$ of perfect matchings of size $s$, there exists a maximum number $f(n,x)$ such that if $s\leq f(n,x)$, then there exists a perfect matching that agrees with each perfect matching in $\mathcal M$ in at most $x-1$ edges. We use probabilistic arguments to give several lower bounds for $f(n,x)$. We also apply the Lovász local lemma to find a function $g(n,x)$ such that if each edge appears at most $g(n, x)$ times then there exists a perfect matching that agrees with each…
In this paper, we consider dominating sets $D$ and $D'$ such that $D$ and $D'$ are disjoint and there exists a perfect matching between them. Let $DD_{\textrm{m}}(G)$ denote the cardinality of smallest such sets $D, D'$ in $G$ (provided they exist, otherwise $DD_{\textrm{m}}(G) = \infty$). This concept was introduced in [Klostermeyer et al., Theory and Application of Graphs, 2017] in the context of studying a certain graph protection problem. We characterize the trees $T$ for which $DD_{\textrm{m}}(T)$ equals a certain graph protection parameter and for which $DD_{\textrm{m}}(T) = α(T)$, where…
For c in [0,1] let P_n(c) denote the set of n-vertex perfect graphs with density c and C_n(c) the set of n-vertex graphs without induced C_5 and with density c. We show that log|P_n(c)|/binom{n}{2}=log|C_n(c)|/binom{n}{2}=h(c)+o(1) with h(c)=1/2 if 1/4<c<3/4 and h(c)=H(|2c-1|)/2 otherwise, where H is the binary entropy function. Further, we use this result to deduce that almost all graphs in C_n(c) have homogenous sets of linear size. This answers a question raised by Loebl, Reed, Scott, Thomason, and Thomassé [Almost all H-free graphs have the Erdős-Hajnal property] in the case of forbidden i…

We consider the following generalization of the seminal Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, due to Frankl. For k>= 2, let F be a k-wise intersecting family of r-subsets of an n element set X, i.e. any k sets in F have a nonempty intersection. If r<= (k-1/k)n, then |F|<={n-1 \choose r-1}. We extend Frankl's theorem in a graph-theoretic direction. For a graph G, and r>=1, let P^r(G) be the family of all r-subsets of the vertex set of G such that every r-subset is either an independent set or contains a maximum independent set. We will consider k-wise intersecting subfamilies of this family for the graph M_n,…
A set A of positive integers is called a perfect difference set if every nonzero integer has an unique representation as the difference of two elements of A. We construct dense perfect difference sets from dense Sidon sets. As a consequence of this new approach, we prove that there exists a perfect difference set A such that A(x) >> x^{\sqrt{2}-1-o(1)}. We also prove that there exists a perfect difference set A such that limsup_{x\to \infty}A(x)/\sqrt x\geq 1/\sqrt 2.
Consider the complete convex geometric graph on $2m$ vertices, $CGG(2m)$, i.e., the set of all boundary edges and diagonals of a planar convex $2m$-gon $P$. In [C. Keller and M. Perles, On the Smallest Sets Blocking Simple Perfect Matchings in a Convex Geometric Graph], the smallest sets of edges that meet all the simple perfect matchings (SPMs) in $CGG(2m)$ (called "blockers") are characterized, and it is shown that all these sets are caterpillar graphs with a special structure, and that their total number is $m \cdot 2^{m-1}$. In this paper we characterize the co-blockers for SPMs in $CGG(2m…
We study the minimum degree necessary to guarantee the existence of perfect and almost-perfect triangle-tilings in an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with sublinear independence number. In this setting, we show that if $δ(G) \ge n/3 + o(n)$ then $G$ has a triangle-tiling covering all but at most four vertices. Also, for every $r \ge 5$, we asymptotically determine the minimum degree threshold for a perfect triangle-tiling under the additional assumptions that $G$ is $K_r$-free and $n$ is divisible by $3$.
A subset $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is called a perfectly matchable set of $G$ if the subgraph induced by $S$ contains a perfect matching. The perfectly matchable set polynomial of $G$, first made explicit by Ohsugi and Tsuchiya, is the (ordinary) generating function $p(G; z)$ for the number of perfectly matchable sets of $G$. In this work, we provide explicit recurrences for computing $p(G; z)$ for an arbitrary (simple) graph and use these to compute the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials for certain lattice polytopes. Namely, we show that $p(G; z)$ is the $h^*$-polynomial for certain classes of s…

A dominating set $S$ in a graph $G$ is said to be perfect if every vertex of $G$ not in $S$ is adjacent to just one vertex of $S$. Given a vertex subset $S'$ of a side $P_m$ of an $m\times n$ grid graph $G$, the perfect dominating sets $S$ in $G$ with $S'=S\cap V(P_m)$ can be determined via an exhaustive algorithm $Θ$ of running time $O(2^{m+n})$. Extending $Θ$ to infinite grid graphs of width $m-1$, periodicity makes the binary decision tree of $Θ$ prunable into a finite threaded tree, a closed walk of which yields all such sets $S$. The graphs induced by the complements of such sets $S$ can …
In this paper, we investigate a variant of Ramsey numbers called defective Ramsey numbers where cliques and independent sets are generalized to $k$-dense and $k$-sparse sets, both commonly called $k$-defective sets. We focus on the computation of defective Ramsey numbers restricted to some subclasses of perfect graphs. Since direct proof techniques are often insufficient for obtaining new values of defective Ramsey numbers, we provide a generic algorithm to compute defective Ramsey numbers in a given target graph class. We combine direct proof techniques with our efficient graph generation alg…
We show that the number of positive integers $n\leq N$ such that $\mathbb{Z}/(n^2+n+1)\mathbb{Z}$ contains a perfect difference set is asymptotically $N/\log{N}$.
We show that the following problems are NP-complete. 1. Can the vertex set of a graph be partitioned into two sets such that each set induces a perfect graph? 2. Is the difference between the chromatic number and clique number at most $1$ for every induced subgraph of a graph? 3. Can the vertex set of every induced subgraph of a graph be partitioned into two sets such that the first set induces a perfect graph, and the clique number of the graph induced by the second set is smaller than that of the original induced subgraph? 4. Does a graph contain a stable set whose deletion results in a perf…
Reflexive polytopes which have the integer decomposition property are of interest. Recently, some large classes of reflexive polytopes with integer decomposition property coming from the order polytopes and the chain polytopes of finite partially ordered sets are known. In the present paper, we will generalize this result. In fact, by virtue of the algebraic technique on Gröbner bases, new classes of reflexive polytopes with the integer decomposition property coming from the order polytopes of finite partially ordered sets and the stable set polytopes of perfect graphs will be introduced. Furt…
In this paper, we show that, given two down-sets (simplicial complexes) there is a matching between them that matches disjoint sets and covers the smaller of the two down-sets. This result generalizes an unpublished result of Berge from circa 1980. The result has nice corollaries for cross-intersecting families and Chvátal's conjecture. More concretely, we show that Chvátal's conjecture is true for intersecting families with covering number $2$. A family $\mathcal F\subset 2^{[n]}$ is intersection-union (IU) if for any $A,B\in\mathcal F$ we have $1\le |A\cap B|\le n-1$. Using the aforementione…
Let G be a fixed connected multigraph with no loops. A random n-lift of G is obtained by replacing each vertex of G by a set of n vertices (where these sets are pairwise disjoint) and replacing each edge by a randomly chosen perfect matching between the n-sets corresponding to the endpoints of the edge. Let X_G be the number of perfect matchings in a random lift of G. We study the distribution of X_G in the limit as n tends to infinity, using the small subgraph conditioning method. We present several results including an asymptotic formula for the expectation of X_G when G is d-regular, d\geq …
We revisit the following problem (along with its higher dimensional variant): Given a set $S$ of $n$ points inside an axis-parallel rectangle $U$ in the plane, find a maximum-area axis-parallel sub-rectangle that is contained in $U$ but contains no points of $S$. (I) We present an algorithm that finds a large empty box amidst $n$ points in $[0,1]^d$: a box whose volume is at least $\frac{\log{d}}{4(n + \log{d})}$ can be computed in $O(n+d \log{d})$ time. (II) To better analyze the above approach, we introduce the concepts of perfect vector sets and properly overlapping partitions, in connectio…
Let $G$, $H$ be finite groups and let $X$ be a finite $G$-set. $G$-perfect nonlinear functions from $X$ to $H$ have been studied in several papers. They have more interesting properties than perfect nonlinear functions from $G$ itself to $H$. By introducing the concept of a $(G, H)$-related difference family of $X$, we obtain a characterization of $G$-perfect nonlinear functions on $X$. When $G$ is abelian, we characterize a $G$-difference set of $X$ by the Fourier transform on a normalized $G$-dual set $\widehat X$. We will also investigate the existence and constructions of $G$-perfect nonli…
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph without isolated vertices. A set $S\subseteq V$ is a paired-dominating set if every vertex in $V-S$ has at least one neighbor in $S$ and the subgraph induced by $S$ contains a perfect matching. In this paper, we present a linear-time algorithm to determine whether a given vertex in a block graph is contained in all its minimum paired-dominating sets.
Recently, Rattan and the first author (Ann. Comb. 25 (2021) 697-728) proved a conjectured inequality of Berkovich and Uncu (Ann. Comb. 23 (2019) 263-284) concerning partitions with an impermissible part. In this article, we generalize this inequality upon considering t impermissible parts. We compare these with partitions whose certain parts appear with a frequency which is a perfect t^{th} power. Our inequalities hold after a certain bound, which for given t is a polynomial in s, a major improvement over the previously known bound in the case t=1. To prove these inequalities, our methods invo…
Monadic second order logic can be used to express many classical notions of sets of vertices of a graph as for instance: dominating sets, induced matchings, perfect codes, independent sets or irredundant sets. Bounds on the number of sets of any such family of sets are interesting from a combinatorial point of view and have algorithmic applications. Many such bounds on different families of sets over different classes of graphs are already provided in the literature. In particular, Rote recently showed that the number of minimal dominating sets in trees of order $n$ is at most $95^{\frac{n}{13…
A set of vertices in a graph is c-colorable if the subgraph induced by the set has a proper c-coloring. In this paper, we study the problem of finding a step-by-step transformation (reconfiguration) between two c-colorable sets in the same graph. This problem generalizes the well-studied Independent Set Reconfiguration problem. As the first step toward a systematic understanding of the complexity of this general problem, we study the problem on classes of perfect graphs. We first focus on interval graphs and give a combinatorial characterization of the distance between two c-colorable sets. Th…
The problem of leaders location plays an important role in the controllability of undirected graphs. The concept of minimal perfect critical vertex set is introduced by drawing support from the eigenvector of Laplace matrix. Using the notion of minimal perfect critical vertex set, the problem of finding the minimum number of controllable leader vertices is transformed into the problem of finding all minimal perfect critical vertex sets. Some necessary and sufficient conditions for special minimal perfect critical vertex sets are provided, such as minimal perfect critical 2 vertex set, and minim…
A vertex subset $S$ of a graph $G$ is a perfect (resp. quasiperfect) dominating set in $G$ if each vertex $v$ of $G\setminus S$ is adjacent to only one vertex ($d_v\in\{1,2\}$ vertices) of $S$. Perfect and quasiperfect dominating sets in the regular tessellation graph of Schläfli symbol $\{3,6\}$ and in its toroidal quotients are investigated, yielding the classification of their perfect dominating sets and most of their quasiperfect dominating sets $S$ with induced components of the form $K_ν$, where $ν\in\{1,2,3\}$ depends only on $S$.
In order to investigate multiplicative structures in additively large sets, Beiglböck et al. raised a significant open question as to whether or not every subset of the natural numbers with bounded gaps (syndetic set) contains arbitrarily long geometric progressions. A result of Erdős implies that syndetic sets contain a $2$-term geometric progression with integer common ratio, but we still do not know if they contain such a progression with common ratio being a perfect square. In this article, we prove that for each $k\in \mathbb{N}$, a syndetic set contains $2$-term geometric progressions wi…
In this paper we study nearly perfect sequences (NPS) via their connection to direct product difference sets (DPDS). We prove the connection between a $p$-ary NPS of period $n$ and type $γ$ and a cyclic $(n,p,n,\frac{n-γ}{p}+γ,0,\frac{n-γ}{p})$-DPDS for an arbitrary integer $γ$. Next, we present the necessary conditions for the existence of a $p$-ary NPS of type $γ$. We apply this result for excluding the existence of some $p$-ary NPS of period $n$ and type $γ$ for $n \leq 100$ and $\vert γ\vert \leq 2$. We also prove the similar results for an almost $p$-ary NPS of type $γ$. Finally, we show …
