Exponential Genus Problems in one-relator products of groups

Exponential equations in free groups were studied initially by Lyndon and Schutzenberger and then by Comerford and Edmunds. Comerford and Edmunds showed that the problem of determining whether or not the class of quadratic exponential equations have solution is decidable, in finitely generated free groups. In this paper we show that for finite systems of quadratic exponential equations decidability passes, under certain hypotheses, from the factor groups to free products and one-relator products.

A Magnus theorem for some one-relator groups

We will say that a group G possesses the Magnus property if for any two elements u,v in G with the same normal closure, u is conjugate to v or v^{-1}. We prove that some one-relator groups, including the fundamental groups of closed nonorientable surfaces of genus g>3 possess this property. The analogous result for orientable surfaces of any finite genus was obtained by the first author [Geometric methods in group theory, Contemp. Math, 372 (2005) 59-69].

Heegaard splittings and 1-relator groups

We show that if $M$ is a fibered, orientable 3-manifold, and if $π_1 M$ has 1-relator presentation, then the presentation is induced by a Heegaard splitting of $M$. A corollary is that, for these manifolds, the rank of $π_1 M$ is equal to the "restricted" Heegaard genus of $M$. We also explore the analogy between 1-relator groups and Haken 3-manifolds, showing that every 1-relator group possesses a "1-relator hierarchy".

Algorithmic and combinatorial methods for enumerating the relators of a group presentation

The main achievement of this thesis is an algorithm which given a finite group presentation and natural numbers n and k, computes all the relators of length and area up to n and k respectively. The complexity of this algorithm is better by a factor which is over-exponential than that of classical methods using van Kampen diagrams.

Irreducible components in an algebraic variety of representations of a family of one-relator groups

Given a finitely generated group G, the set Hom(G,SL_2 C) inherits the structure of an algebraic variety R(G)called the "representation variety" of G. This algebraic variety is an invariant of G. Genericity, the Arzhantseva-Ol'shanskii method and the Isomorphism Problem for One-Relator Groups

We apply the method of Arzhantseva-Ol'shanskii to prove that for an exponentially generic (in the sense of Ol'shanskii) class of one-relator groups the isomorphism problem is solvable in at most exponential time. This is obtained as a corollary of our more general result that for any fixed integers $m>1, n>0$ there is an exponentially generic class of $m$-generator $n$-relator groups where every group has only one Nielsen equivalence class of $m$-tuples generating non-free subgroups. Generic properties of Whitehead's Algorithm and isomorphism rigidity of random one-relator groups

We prove that Whitehead's algorithm for solving the automorphism problem in a fixed free group $F_k$ has strongly linear time generic-case complexity. This is done by showing that the ``hard'' part of the algorithm terminates in linear time on an exponentially generic set of input pairs. We then apply these results to one-relator groups. Division in group rings of surface groups

We prove a division algorithm for group rings of high genus surface groups and use it to show that some $2$-complexes with surface fundamental groups are standard. We also give an application of division to cohomological dimension of $2$-relator groups acting on $\mathbb H^n$.

Quasiconvexity and Amalgams

We obtain a criterion for quasiconvexity of a subgroup of an amalgamated free product of two word hyperbolic groups along a virtually cyclic subgroup. The result provides a method of constructing new word hyperbolic group in class (Q), that is such that all their finitely generated subgroups are quasiconvex. It is known that free groups, hyperbolic surface groups and most 3-dimensional Kleinian groups have property (Q).
