We prove that every visual Gromov hyperbolic space X whose boundary at infinity has the finite capacity dimension n admits a quasi-isometric embedding into (n+1)-fold product of metric trees.
We introduce a quasi-symmetry invariant of a metric space Z called the capacity dimension. Our main result says that for a visual Gromov hyperbolic space X the asymptotic dimension of X is at most the capacity dimension of its boundary at infinity plus 1.
We show that for each n\ge 2 there is a quasi-isometric embedding of the hyperbolic space H^n in the product T^n=Tx...xT of n copies of a (simplicial) metric tree T. On the other hand, we prove that there is no quasi-isometric embedding H^2 --> TxR^m for any metric tree T and any m\ge 0.
Let X be a geodesic metric space. Gromov proved that there exists k>0 such that if every sufficiently large triangle T satisfies the Rips condition with constant k times pr(T), where pr(T) is the perimeter T, then X is hyperbolic. We give an elementary proof of this fact, also giving an estimate for k. We also show that if all the triangles T in X satisfy the Rips condition with constant k times pr(T), then X is a real tree. Moreover, we point out how this characterization of hyperbolicity can be used to improve a result by Bonk, and to provide an easy proof of the (well-known) fact that X is …
We study isometric actions of tree automorphism groups on the infinite-dimensional hyperbolic spaces. On the one hand, we exhibit a general one-parameter family of such representations and analyse the corresponding equivariant embeddings of the trees, showing that they are convex-cocompact and asymptotically isometric. On the other hand, focusing on the case of sufficiently transitive groups of automorphisms of locally finite trees, we classify completely all irreducible representations by isometries of hyperbolic spaces. It turns out that in this case our one-parameter family exhausts all non…
We deduce from a rooted tree in the disk a slalom divide and a slalom knot. A slalom knot is either the local link of a simple plane curve singularity of type A_2n, E_6, E_8 or a fibered hyperbolic knot with very special monodromy.
Let (X,d) be a tree (T) of hyperbolic metric spaces satisfying the quasi-isometrically embedded condition. Let $v$ be a vertex of $T$. Let $({X_v},d_v)$ denote the hyperbolic metric space corresponding to $v$. Then $i : X_v \rightarrow X$ extends continuously to a map $\hat{i} : \widehat{X_v} \rightarrow \widehat{X}$. This generalizes a Theorem of Cannon and Thurston. The techniques are used to give a new proof of a result of Minsky: Thurston's ending lamination conjecture for certain Kleinian groups. Applications to graphs of hyperbolic groups and local connectivity of limit sets of Kleinian …
In [9] Kaimanovich introduced the concept of augmented tree on the symbolic space of a self-similar set. It is hyperbolic in the sense of Gromov, and it was shown in [13] that under the open set condition, a self-similar set can be identified with the hyperbolic boundary of the tree. In the paper, we investigate in detail a class of simple augmented trees and the Lipschitz equivalence of such trees. The main purpose is to use this to study the Lipschitz equivalence problem of the totally disconnected self-similar sets which has been undergoing some extensive development recently.
We prove the existence of continuous boundary extensions (Cannon-Thurston maps) for the inclusion of a vertex space into a tree of (strongly) relatively hyperbolic spaces satisfying the qi-embedded condition. This implies the same result for inclusion of vertex (or edge) subgroups in finite graphs of (strongly) relatively hyperbolic groups. This generalises a result of Bowditch for punctured surfaces in 3 manifolds and a result of Mitra for trees of hyperbolic metric spaces.
Tree-graded spaces are generalizations of R-trees. They appear as asymptotic cones of groups (when the cones have cut points). Since many questions about endomorphisms and automorphisms of groups, solving equations over groups, studying embeddings of a group into another group, etc. lead to actions of groups on the asymptotic cones, it is natural to consider actions of groups on tree-graded spaces. We develop a theory of such actions which generalizes the well known theory of groups acting on R-trees. As applications of our theory, we describe, in particular, relatively hyperbolic groups with …
We show that a relatively hyperbolic group quasi-isometrically embeds in a product of finitely many trees if the peripheral subgroups do, and we provide an estimate on the minimal number of trees needed. Applying our result to the case of 3-manifolds, we show that fundamental groups of closed 3-manifolds have linearly controlled asymptotic dimension at most 8. To complement this result, we observe that fundamental groups of Haken 3-manifolds with non-empty boundary have asymptotic dimension 2.
We prove that there exists a universal constant $c$ such that any closed hyperbolic 3-manifold admits a triangulation of treewidth at most $c$ times its volume. The converse is not true: we show there exists a sequence of hyperbolic 3-manifolds of bounded treewidth but volume approaching infinity. Along the way, we prove that crushing a normal surface in a triangulation does not increase the carving-width, and hence crushing any number of normal surfaces in a triangulation affects treewidth by at most a constant multiple.
We provide new examples of acylindrically hyperbolic groups arising from actions on simplicial trees. In particular, we consider amalgamated products and HNN-extensions, 1-relator groups, automorphism groups of polynomial algebras, 3-manifold groups and graph products. Acylindrical hyperbolicity is then used to obtain some results about the algebraic structure, analytic properties and measure equivalence rigidity of groups from these classes.
We analyse the existence question for essential laminations in 3-manifolds. The purpose is to prove that there are infinitely many closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds which do not admit essential laminations. This answers in the negative a question posed by Gabai and Oertel. The proof is obtained by analysing certain group actions on trees and showing that certain 3-manifold groups only have trivial actions on trees. In general the trees are neither simplicial nor metric. There are corollaries concerning the existence question for Reebless foliations and pseudo-Anosov flows.
We prove the equivalence between a relative bottleneck property and being quasi-isometric to a tree-graded space. As a consequence, we deduce that the quasi-trees of spaces defined axiomatically by Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara are quasi-isometric to tree-graded spaces. Using this we prove that mapping class groups quasi-isometrically embed into a finite product of simplicial trees. In particular, these groups have finite Assouad-Nagata dimension, direct embeddings exhibiting $\ell^p$ compression exponent $1$ for all $p\geq 1$ and they quasi-isometrically embed into $\ell^1(\mathbb N)$. We deduce…
We define analogues of the graphs of free splittings, of cyclic splittings, and of maximally-cyclic splittings of $F_N$ for free products of groups, and show their hyperbolicity. Given a countable group $G$ which splits as $G=G_1\ast\dots\ast G_k\ast F$, where $F$ denotes a finitely generated free group, we identify the Gromov boundary of the graph of relative cyclic splittings with the space of equivalence classes of $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. A tree is \emph{$\mathcal{Z}$-averse} if it is not compatible with any tree $T'$, that is itself comp…
Given an iterated function system (IFS) of contractive similitudes, the theory of Gromov hyperbolic graph on the IFS has been established recently. In the paper, we introduce a notion of simple augmented tree which is a Gromov hyperbolic graph. By generalizing a combinatorial device of rearrangeable matrix, we show that there exists a near-isometry between the simple augmented tree and the symbolic space of the IFS, so that their hyperbolic boundaries are Lipschitz equivalent. We then apply this to consider the Lipschitz equivalence of self-similar sets with or without assuming the open set co…
We describe in this paper a geometric construction in the projective p-adic plane that gives, together with a suitable notion of p-adic convexity, some open subsets of P 2 .Q p / naturally endowed with a "Hilbert" distance and a transitive action of PGL.2; Q p / by isometries. ese open sets are natural analogues of the hyperbolic disc, more precisely of Klein's projective model. But, unlike the real case, there is not only one such hyperbolic disc. Indeed, we nd three of them if p is odd (and seven if p D 2). Let us stress out that neither the usual notion of convexity nor that of connectednes…
We study the hyperbolic random geometric graph introduced in Krioukov et al. For a sequence $R_n \to \infty$, we define these graphs to have the vertex set as Poisson points distributed uniformly in balls $B(0,R_n) \subset B_d^α$, the $d$-dimensional Poincaré ball (unit d-ball with the Poincaré metric $d_α$ corresponding to negative curvature $-α^2, α> 0$) by connecting any two points within a distance $R_n$ according to the metric $d_ζ, ζ> 0$. Denoting these graphs by $HG_n(R_n ; α, ζ)$, we study asymptotic counts of copies of a fixed tree $Γ_k$ (with the ordered degree sequence $d_{(1)} \leq…
We show that trees of manifolds, the topological spaces introduced by Jakobsche, appear as boundaries at infinity of various spaces and groups. In particular, they appear as Gromov boundaries of some hyperbolic groups, of arbitrary dimension, obtained by the procedure of strict hyperbolization. We also recognize these spaces as boundaries of arbitrary Coxeter groups with manifold nerves, and as Gromov boundaries of the fundamental groups of singular spaces obtained from some finite volume hyperbolic manifolds by cutting off their cusps and collapsing the resulting boundary tori to points.
We generalize the notion of tight geodesics in the curve complex to tight trees. We then use tight trees to construct model geometries for certain surface bundles over graphs. This extends some aspects of the combinatorial model for doubly degenerate hyperbolic 3-manifolds developed by Brock, Canary, and Minsky during the course of their proof of the Ending Lamination Theorem. Thus we obtain uniformly Gromov-hyperbolic geometric model spaces equipped with geometric $G-$actions, where $G$ admits an exact sequence of the form $$1 \to π_1(S) \to G \to Q \to 1.$$ Here $S$ is a closed surface of ge…
The K-theoretic Farrell-Jones isomorphism conjecture for a group ring $R[G]$ has been proved for several groups. The toolbox for proving the Farrell-Jones conjecture for a given group depends on some geometric properties of the group as it is the case of hyperbolic groups. The technique used to prove it for hyperbolic groups $G$ relies in the concept of an $N$-transfer space endowed with a $G$ action. In this work, we give an explicit construction of a $1$-transfer space.
A quasi-tree is a geodesic metric space quasi-isometric to a tree. We give a general construction of many actions of groups on quasi-trees. The groups we can handle include non-elementary (relatively) hyperbolic groups, rank 1 CAT(0) groups, mapping class groups and Out(Fn). As an application, we show that mapping class groups act on finite products of δ-hyperbolic spaces so that orbit maps are quasi-isometric embeddings. We prove that mapping class groups have finite asymptotic dimension.
In this paper, we study the capacity dimension of the boundary of $CAT(0)$ spaces. We first compare the two metrics on the boundary of a hyperbolic $CAT(0)$ space, i.e., the visual metric and the conical metric, and prove that they give the same capacity dimension of the boundary. Then we study the capacity dimension of the boundary of buildings, which is an important class of $CAT(0)$ spaces. Finally, we give a possible method to prove the finiteness of the asymptotic dimension of $CAT(0)$ spaces.
We prove a combination theorem for trees of (strongly) relatively hyperbolic spaces and finite graphs of (strongly) relatively hyperbolic groups. This gives a geometric extension of Bestvina and Feighn's Combination Theorem for hyperbolic groups and answers a question of Swarup. We also prove a converse to the main Combination Theorem.
We prove that for a relatively hyperbolic group G there is a sequence of relatively hyperbolic proper quotients such that their growth rates converge to the growth rate of G. Under natural assumptions, the same conclusion holds for the critical exponent of a cusp-uniform action of G on a hyperbolic metric space. As a corollary, we obtain that the critical exponent of a torsion-free geometrically finite Kleinian group can be arbitrarily approximated by those of quotient groups. This resolves a question of Dal'bo-Peigné-Picaud-Sambusetti. Our approach is based on the study of Patterson-Sullivan …
We introduce a concept of tree-graded metric space and we use it to show quasi-isometry invariance of certain classes of relatively hyperbolic groups, to obtain a characterization of relatively hyperbolic groups in terms of their asymptotic cones, to find geometric properties of Cayley graphs of relatively hyperbolic groups, and to construct the first example of finitely generated group with a continuum of non-$π_1$-equivalent asymptotic cones. Note that by a result of Kramer, Shelah, Tent and Thomas, continuum is the maximal possible number of different asymptotic cones of a finitely generate…

Motivated by computational aspects of persistent homology for Vietoris-Rips filtrations, we generalize a result of Eliyahu Rips on the contractibility of Vietoris-Rips complexes of geodesic spaces for a suitable parameter depending on the hyperbolicity of the space. We consider the notion of geodesic defect to extend this result to general metric spaces in a way that is also compatible with the filtration. We further show that for finite tree metrics the Vietoris-Rips complexes collapse to their corresponding subforests. We relate our result to modern computational methods by showing that thes…
