Let $D$ be a division algebra such that $D\t D^o$ is a Noetherian algebra, then any division subalgebra of $D$ is a {\em finitely generated} division algebra. Let $\D $ be a finite set of commuting derivations or automorphisms of the division algebra $D$, then the group $\Ev (\D)$ of common eigenvalues (i.e. {\em weights}) is a {\em finitely generated abelian} group. Typical examples of $D$ are the quotient division algebra ${\rm Frac} (\CD (X))$ of the ring of differential operators $\CD (X)$ on a smooth irreducible affine variety $X$ over a field $K$ of characteristic zero, and the quotient division algebra ${\rm Frac} (U (\Gg))$ of the universal enveloping algebra $U(\Gg)$ of a finite dimensional Lie algebra $\Gg $. It is proved that the algebra of differential operators $\CD (X)$ is isomorphic to its opposite algebra $\CD (X)^o$.
For a division ring D, finite dimensional over its center F, we give a condiction for the connectedness of the commuting graph of a matrix ring over $D$. Furthermore, we prove that if the commuting graph is connected, then its diameter is between four and six.
We study the existence of free subalgebras in division algebras, and prove the following general result: if $A$ is a noetherian domain which is countably generated over an uncountable algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic 0, then either the quotient division algebra of $A$ contains a free algebra on two generators, or it is left algebraic over every maximal subfield. As an application, we prove that if $k$ is an uncountable algebraically closed field and $A$ is a finitely generated $k$-algebra that is a domain of GK-dimension strictly less than 3, then either $A$ satisfies a polynom…
For central simple finitely generated algebras of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and for their division algebras upper bounds are obtained for the transcendence degree of their commutative subalgebras and subfields respectively. In the formulae for the upper bounds are used only two dimensions of the algebras: the Gelfand-Kirillov and the filter dimension. In the case of the ring of differential operators on a smooth irreducible affine algebraic variety the upper bounds are the exact upper bounds. A similar upper bound is given for the transcendence degree of isotropic subalgebras of strong…
Let $A$ be a finitely generated $K$-algebra that is a domain of GK dimension less than 3, and let $Q(A)$ denote the quotient division algebra of $A$. We show that if $D$ is a division subalgebra of $Q(A)$ of GK dimension at least 2 then $Q(A)$ is finite dimensional as a left $D$-vector space. We use this to show that if $A$ is a finitely generated domain of GK dimension less than 3 over an algebraically closed field $K$ then any division subalgebra $D$ of $Q(A)$ is either a finitely generated field extension of $K$ of transcendence degree at most one, or $Q(A)$ is finite dimensional as a left …
When $\mathbb{K}$ is a field, and $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ denote commuting subspaces of $\text{M}_n(\K)$ each of which contains a non-scalar matrix, we prove that $\dim \mathcal{A} +\dim \mathcal{B} \leq (n-1)^2+3$. We also give a complete description of the cases when equality holds.
Some general criteria to produce explicit free algebras inside the division ring of fractions of skew polynomial rings are presented. These criteria are applied to some special cases of division rings with natural involutions, yielding, for instance, free subalgebras generated by symmetric elements both in the division ring of fractions of the group algebra of a torsion free nilpotent group and in the division ring of fractions of the first Weyl algebra.
We show that the canonical involution on a nonabelian poly-orderable group G extends to the Hughes-free division ring of fractions D of the group algebra k[G] of G over a field k and that, with respect to this involution, D contains a pair of symmetric elements freely generating a free group subalgebra of D over k.
For any central simple algebra over a field F which contains a maximal subfield M with non-trivial F-automorphism group G, G is solvable if and only if the algebra contains a finite chain of subalgebras which are generalized cyclic algebras over their centers (field extensions of F) satisfying certain conditions. These subalgebras are related to a normal subseries of G. A crossed product algebra F is hence solvable if and only if it can be constructed out of such a finite chain of subalgebras. This result was stated for division crossed product algebras by Petit, and overlaps with a similar re…
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero, let $σ$ be an automorphism of $K$ and let $δ$ be a $σ$-derivation of $K$. We show that the division ring $D=K(x;σ,δ)$ either has the property that every finitely generated subring satisfies a polynomial identity or $D$ contains a free algebra on two generators over its center. In the case when $K$ is finitely generated over $k$ we then see that for $σ$ a $k$-algebra automorphism of $K$ and $δ$ a $k$-linear derivation of $K$, $K(x;σ)$ having a free subalgebra on two generators is equivalent to $σ$ having infinite order, and $K(x;δ)$ having a free subal…
We define a transcendence degree for division algebras, by modifying the lower transcendence degree construction of Zhang. We show that this invariant has many of the desirable properties one would expect a noncommutative analogue of the ordinary transcendence degree for fields to have. Using this invariant, we prove the following conjecture of Small. Let $k$ be a field, let $A$ be a finitely generated $k$-algebra that is an Ore domain, and let $D$ denote the quotient division algebra of $A$. If $A$ does not satisfy a polynomial identity then the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of $K$ is at most th…
Let $K$ be a field, let $σ$ be an automorphism of $K$, and let $δ$ be a derivation of $K$. We show that if $D$ is one of $K(x;σ)$ or $K(x;δ)$, then $D$ either contains a free algebra over its center on two generators, or every finitely generated subalgebra of $D$ satisfies a polynomial identity. As a corollary, we are able to show that the quotient division ring of any iterated Ore extension of an affine domain satisfying a polynomial identity either again satisfies a polynomial identity or it contains a free algebra over its center on two variables.

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be the $p$-dimensional Witt algebra over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>3$. Let $\mathscr{N}={x\in\ggg\mid x^{[p]}=0}$ be the nilpotent variety of $\mathfrak{g}$, and $\mathscr{C}(\mathscr{N}):=\{(x,y)\in \mathscr{N}\times\mathscr{N}\mid [x,y]=0\}$ the nilpotent commuting variety of $\mathfrak{g}$. As an analogue of Premet's result in the case of classical Lie algebras [A. Premet, Nilpotent commuting varieties of reductive Lie algebras. Invent. Math., 154, 653-683, 2003.], we show that the variety $\mathscr{C}(\mathscr{N})$ is reducible and equidimens…
Given a central simple algebra with involution over an arbitrary field, étale subalgebras contained in the space of symmetric elements are investigated. The method emphasizes the similarities between the various types of involutions and privileges a unified treatment for all characteristics whenever possible. As a consequence a conceptual proof of a theorem of Rowen is obtained, which asserts that every division algebra of exponent two and degree eight contains a maximal subfield that is a triquadratic extension of the centre.
We show that the fixed elements for the natural GL_m-action on the universal division algebra UD(m,n) of m generic n x n matrices form a division subalgebra of degree n, assuming n >= 3 and 2 <= m <= n^2 - 2. This allows us to describe the asymptotic behavior of the dimension of the space of SL_m-invariant homogeneous central polynomials p(X_1,...,X_m) for n x n matrices. Here the base field is assumed to be of characteristic zero.
We approach celebrated theorems of Burnside and Wedderburn via simultaneous triangularization. First, for a general field $F$, we prove that $M_n(F)$ is the only irrreducible subalgebra of triangularizable matrices in $M_n(F)$ provided such a subalgebra exists. This provides a slight generalization of a well-known theorem of Burnside. Next, for a given $n > 1$, we characterize all fields $F$ such that Burnside's Theorem holds in $M_n(F)$, i.e., $M_n(F)$ is the only irreducible subalgebra of itself. In fact, for a subfield $F$ of the center of a division ring $D$, our simple proof of the aforem…
Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional division algebra containing a base field $k$ in its center $F$. We say that $A$ is defined over a subfield $F_0$ of $F$ if $A = A_0\otimes_{F_0} F$ for some $F_0$-subalgebra $A_0$ of $A$. We show that: (1) In many cases $A$ can be defined over a rational extension of $k$. (2) If $A$ has odd degree $n \ge 5$, then $A$ is defined over a field $F_0$ of transcendence degree at most $(n-1)(n-2)/2$ over $k$. (3) If $A$ is a $Z/m \times Z/2$-crossed product for some $m \ge 2$ (and in particular, if $A$ is any algebra of degree 4) then $A$ is Brauer equivalent to a tens…
We prove that all Rota-Baxter operators on a quadratic division algebra are trivial. For nonzero weight, we state that all Rota-Baxter operators on the simple odd-dimensional Jordan algebra of bilinear form are projections on a subalgebra along another one. For weight zero, we find a connection between the Rota-Baxter operators and the solutions to the alternative Yang-Baxter equation on the Cayley-Dickson algebra. We also investigate the Rota-Baxter operators on the matrix algebras of order two, the Grassmann algebra of plane, and the Kaplansky superalgebra.
Let $E$ be a primarily quasilocal field, $M/E$ a finite Galois extension and $D$ a central division $E$-algebra of index divisible by $[M\colon E]$. In addition to the main result of Part I, this part of the paper shows that if the Galois group $G(M/E)$ is not nilpotent, then $M$ does not necessarily embed in $D$ as an $E$-subalgebra. When $E$ is quasilocal, we find the structure of the character group of its absolute Galois group; this enables us to prove that if $E$ is strictly quasilocal and almost perfect, then the divisible part of the multiplicative group $E ^{\ast}$ equals the intersect…
Recent work applying higher gauge theory to the superstring has indicated the presence of `higher symmetry'. Infinitesimally, this is realized by a `Lie 2-superalgebra' extending the Poincare superalgebra in precisely the dimensions where the classical supersymmetric string makes sense: 3, 4, 6 and 10. In the previous paper in this series, we constructed this Lie 2-superalgebra using the normed division algebras. In this paper, we use an elegant geometric technique to integrate this Lie 2-superalgebra to a `Lie 2-supergroup' extending the Poincare supergroup in the same dimensions. Briefly, a …
This work relates to three problems, the classification of maximal Abelian subalgebras (MASAs) of the Lie algebra of square matrices, the classification of 2-step solvable Frobenius Lie algebras and the Gerstenhaber's Theorem. Let M and N be two commuting square matrices of order n with entries in an algebraically closed field K. Then the associative commutative K-algebra, they generate, is of dimension at most n. This result was proved by Murray Gerstenhaber in 1961. The analog of this property for three commuting matrices is still an open problem, its version for a higher number of commuting…
Let $(K, v)$ be a Henselian valued field satisfying the following conditions, for a given prime number $p$: (i) central division $K$-algebras of (finite) $p$-primary dimensions have Schur indices equal to their exponents; (ii) the value group $v(K)$ properly includes its subgroup $pv(K)$. The paper shows that if $\hat K$ is the residue field of $(K, v)$ and $\hat R$ is an intermediate field of the maximal $p$-extension $\hat K (p)/\hat K$, then the natural homomorphism Br$(\hat K) \to $ Br$(\hat R)$ of Brauer groups maps surjectively the $p$-component Br$(\hat K)_{p}$ on Br$(\hat R)_{p}$. It p…
