This article gives conceptual statements and proofs relating parabolic induction and Jacquet functors on split reductive groups over a non-Archimedean local field to the associated Iwahori-Hecke algebra as tensoring from and restricting to parabolic subalgebras. The main tool is Bernstein's presentation of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra.
We give explicit formulae for certain elements occurring in the Bernstein presentation of an affine Hecke algebra, in terms of the usual Iwahori- Matsumoto generators. We utilize certain minimal expressions for said elements and we give a sheaf-theoretic interpretation for the existence of these minimal expressions.
Let F be a non-Archimedean local field and let G be a connected reductive affine algebraic F-group. Let I be an Iwahori subgroup of G(F) and denote by H(G; I) the Iwahori-Hecke algebra, i.e. the convolution algebra of complex-valued functions on G(F) which are left- and right-invariant by I-translations. This article proves that the Iwahori-Hecke algebra H(G; I) has both an Iwahori-Matsumoto Presentation and a Bernstein Presentation analogous to those for affine Hecke algebras on root data found in Lusztig's "Affine Hecke algebras and their graded version", and gives a basis (in other words, a…
Recently, Iwahori-Hecke algebras were associated to Kac-Moody groups over non-Archimedean local fields. We introduce principal series representations for these algebras. We study these representations and partially generalize Kato and Matsumoto irreducibility criteria.
Recently, Iwahori-Hecke algebras were associated to Kac-Moody groups over non-Archimedean local fields. In a previous paper, we introduced principal series representations for these algebras and partially generalized Kato's irreducibility criterion. In this paper, we study how some of these representations decompose when they are reducible and deduce information on the irreducible representations of these algebras.
The Iwahori-Hecke algebra has a ``natural'' trace $τ$. This trace is the evaluation at the identity element in the usual interpretation of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra as a sub-algebra of the convolution algebra of a p-adic semi-simple group. The Iwahori-Hecke algebra contains an important commutative sub-algebra ${\bf C}[θ_x]$, that was described and studied by Bernstein, Zelevinski and Lusztig. In this note we compute the generating function for the value of $τ$ on the basis $θ_x$.
This article gives a fairly self-contained treatment of the basic facts about the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of a split p-adic group, including Bernstein's presentation, Macdonald's formula, the Casselman-Shalika formula, and the Lusztig-Kato formula.
For Iwahori-spherical representations of non-Archimedean general linear groups, Chan-Savin recently expressed the Whittaker functor as a restriction to an isotypic component of a finite Iwahori-Hecke algebra module. We generalize this method to describe principal degenerate Whittaker functors. Concurrently, we view Murnaghan's formula for the Harish-Chandra--Howe character as a Grothendieck group expansion of the same module. Comparing the two approaches through the lens of Zelevinsky's PSH-algebras, we obtain an explicit unitriangular transition matrix between coefficients of the character ex…
Let $G$ be a split reductive group over a $p$-adic field $F$. Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup and $U$ the maximal unipotent subgroup of $B$. Let $ψ$ be a Whittaker character of $U$. Let $I$ be an Iwahori subgroup of $G$. We describe the Iwahori-Hecke algebra action on the Gelfand-Graev representation $(\mathrm{ind}_{U}^{G}ψ)^I$ by an explicit projective module. As a consequence, for $G=GL(n,F)$, we define and describe Bernstein-Zelevinsky derivatives of representations generated by $I$-fixed vectors in terms of the corresponding Iwahori-Hecke algebra modules. Furthermore, using Lusztig's reduction…
Let $G$ be the group of $F$-points of a split connected reductive $F$-group over a non-Archimedean local field $F$ of characteristic 0. Let $π$ be an irreducible smooth self-dual representation of $G$. The space $W$ of $π$ carries a non-degenerate $G$-invariant bilinear form $(\,,\,)$ which is unique up to scaling. The form is easily seen to be symmetric or skew-symmetric and we set $\varepsilon(π)=\pm 1$ accordingly. In this article, we show that $\varepsilon{(π)}=1$ when $π$ is a generic representation of $G$ with non-zero vectors fixed under an Iwahori subgroup $I$.
We define the Iwahori-Hecke algebra for an almost split Kac-Moody group over a local non-archimedean field. We use the hovel associated to this situation, which is the analogue of the Bruhat-Tits building for a reductive group. The fixer K of some chamber in the standard apartment plays the role of the Iwahori subgroup. We can define the Iwahori-Hecke algebra as the algebra of some K-bi-invariant functions on the group with support consisting of a finite union of double classes. As two chambers in the hovel are not always in a same apartment, this support has to be in some large subsemigroup o…
Let $W$ be an Iwahori Weyl group and $W(1)$ be an extension of $W$ by an abelian group. Vigneras gave a description of the $R$-algebra $\mathcal{H}_R(q_{\tilde{s}}, c_{\tilde{s}})$ associated to $W(1)$, and also gave a basis of the center of $\mathcal{H}_R(q_{\tilde{s}}, c_{\tilde{s}})$ using the Bernstein presentation of $\mathcal{H}_R(q_{\tilde{s}}, c_{\tilde{s}})$. In this paper, we restrict to the case where $q_{\tilde{s}}=0$ and use the Iwahori-Matsumoto presentation to give a basis of the center of $\mathcal{H}_R(0, c_{\tilde{s}})$.
This is an extended and corrected version of the author's Diplomarbeit. A class of algebras called generic pro-$p$ Hecke algebras is introduced, enlarging the class of generic Hecke algebras by considering certain extensions of (extended) Coxeter groups. Examples of generic pro-$p$ Hecke algebras are given by pro-$p$-Iwahori Hecke algebras and Yokonuma-Hecke algebras. The notion of an orientation of a Coxeter group is introduced and used to define `Bernstein maps' intimately related to Bernstein's presentation and to Cherednik's cocycle. It is shown that certain relations in the Hecke algebra …
The Test Function Conjecture due to Haines and Kottwitz predicts that the geometric Bernstein center is a source of test functions required by the Langlands-Kottwitz method for expressing the local semisimple Hasse-Weil zeta function of a Shimura variety in terms of automorphic L-functions. Haines and Rapoport found an explicit formula for such test functions in the Drinfeld case with pro-p Iwahori level structure. This article generalizes the Haines-Rapoport formula for the Drinfeld case to a broader class of split groups. The main theorem presents a new formula for test functions with pro-p …
In this paper, we compute the Hecke action of a certain test function on the space of an unramified principal series of a connected reductive group over a non-archimedean local field by using the theory of Iwahori--Hecke algebra. As an application, we obtain a new expression of the local L-functions of unramified representations.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of odd residue characteristic $p$. Let $G$ be the unramified unitary group $U(2, 1)(E/F)$, and $K$ be a maximal compact open subgroup of $G$. For an $\overline{\mathbf{F}}_p$-smooth representation $π$ of $G$ containing a weight $σ$ of $K$, we follow the work of Hu (\cite{Hu12}) to attach $π$ a certain $I_K$-subrepresentation, where $I_K$ is the Iwahori subgroup in $K$. In terms of such an $I_K$-subrepresentation, we prove a sufficient condition for $π$ to be non-finitely presented. We determine such an $I_K$-subrepresentation explicitly, when $π$ is eit…
Let $G$ be the unramified unitary group $U(2, 1)(E/F)$ over a non-archimedean local field $F$ of odd residue characteristic $p$. In this paper, for any supersingular representation of $G$ that contains the Steinberg weight, we prove its pro-$p$-Iwahori invariants, as a right module over the pro-$p$-Iwahori--Hecke algebra of $G$, is \emph{not} simple.
Let $K$ be a non-discrete non-Archimedean local field with residue characteristic $p$. Let $G$ be the group of $K$ rational points of a algebraic connected reductive group defined over $K$. In this article we compute the extensions between characters of affine pro-$p$ Iwahori--Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}^{\text{aff}}$ over an algebraically closed field $R$ of characteristic $p$. In rank one case we deduce the relation between the blocks and $L$-packets.
We use Bernstein's presentation of the Iwahori-Matsumoto Hecke algebra to obtain a simple proof of the Satake isomorphism and, in the same stroke, compute the center of the Iwahori-Matsumoto Hecke algebra.
Let $G_n=\operatorname{GL}_n(F)$, where $F$ is a non-archimedean local field with residue characteristic $p$. Our starting point is the Bernstein-decomposition of the representation category of $G_n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $\ell \neq p$ into blocks. In level zero, we associate to each block a replacement for the Iwahori-Hecke algebra which provides a Morita-equivalence just as in the complex case. Additionally, we will explain how this gives rise to a description of an arbitrary $G_n$-block in terms of simple $G_m$-blocks (for $m\leq n$), paralleling the approach …
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic not equal to 2, let $E/F$ be a finite unramified extension field, and let $σ$ be a generator of $\text{Gal}(E, F )$. Let $f$ be an element of $Z(H_{I_E})$, the center of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra for $GL_2(E)$, and let $b$ be the Iwahori base change homomorphism from $Z(H_{I_E})$ to $Z(H_{I_F})$, the center of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra for $GL_2(F)$ [8]. This paper proves the matching of the $σ$-twisted orbital integral over $GL_2(E)$ of $f$ with the orbital integral over $GL_2(F)$ of $bf$. To do so, we compute the orbital and $σ$-twis…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group defined over a non archimedean local field $k$. A theorem of Bernstein states that for any compact open subgroup $K$ of $G(k)$, there are, up to unramified twists, only finitely many $K$-spherical supercuspidal representations of $G(k)$. We prove an analogous result on the Galois side of the Langlands correspondence.
We give a combinatorial evaluation of Iwahori Whittaker functions for unramified genuine principal series representations on metaplectic covers of the general linear group over a non-archimedean local field. To describe the combinatorics, we introduce new combinatorial data that we call colored data: colored Lusztig data, colored Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and colored lattice models. We show that all three are equivalent. To achieve the result, we give an explicit Iwahori decomposition for the maximal unipotent subgroup of a split reductive group which gives the parametrization of the generaliz…
A well known result of Borel says that the category of modules over the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of a semisimple p-adic group G describes the Bernstein component associated to the unramified principal series of G. We consider Bernstein components for Sp(4,F) associated to principal series induced from simple supercuspidal representations.
We study the Iwahori-component of the Gelfand-Graev representation of a central cover of a split linear reductive group and utilize our results for three applications. In fact, it is advantageous to begin at the pro-$p$ level. Thus to begin we study the structure of a genuine pro-$p$ Iwahori-Hecke algebra, establishing Iwahori-Matsumoto and Bernstein presentations. With this structure theory we first describe the pro-$p$ part of the Gelfand-Graev representation and then the more subtle Iwahori part. For the first application we relate the Gelfand-Graev representation to the metaplectic represe…
For a connected reductive group $G$ defined over a non-archimedean local field $F$, we consider the Bernstein blocks in the category of smooth representations of $G(F)$. Bernstein blocks whose cuspidal support involves a regular supercuspidal representation are called $\textit{regular}$ Bernstein blocks. Most Bernstein blocks are regular when the residual characteristic of $F$ is not too small. Under mild hypotheses on the residual characteristic, we show that the Bernstein center of a regular Bernstein block of $G(F)$ is isomorphic to the Bernstein center of a regular depth-zero Bernstein blo…
In this paper we are interested in the geometric local theta correspondence at the Iwahori level for dual reductive pairs $(G,H)$ of type II over a non-Archimedean field of characteristic $p\neq 2$ in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. We consider the geometric version of the $I_{H}\times I_{G}$-invariants of the Weil representation $\mathcal{S}^{I_{H}\times I_{G}}$ as a bimodule under the of action Iwahori-Hecke algebras $\mathcal{H}_{I_{G}}$ and $\mathcal{H}_{I_{H}}$ and we give some partial geometric description of the corresponding category under the action of Hecke functors…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a non-archimedean local field $F$ and $I$ be an Iwahori subgroup of $G(F)$. Let $I_n$ is the $n$-th Moy-Prasad filtration subgroup of $I$. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: to give some nice presentations of the Hecke algebra of connected, reductive groups with $I_n$-level structure; and to introduce the Tits group of the Iwahori-Weyl group of groups $G$ that split over an unramified extension of $F$. The first main result of this paper is a presentation of the Hecke algebra $\mathcal H(G(F),I_n)$, generalizing the previous work of Iwahori-Matsu…
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. The classification of the irreducible representations of $GL_n(F)$, $n\ge0$ in terms of supercuspidal representations is one of the highlights of the Bernstein--Zelevinsky theory. We give an analogous classification for metaplectic coverings of $GL_n(F)$, $n\ge0$.
We prove that a certain genuine Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}$ on the non-linear double cover of a simple, simply-laced, simply-connected, Chevalley group $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}_{2}$ admits a Bernstein presentation. This presentation has two consequences. First, the Bernstein component containing the genuine unramified principal series is equivalent to $\mathcal{H}$-mod. Second, $\mathcal{H}$ is isomorphic to the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of the linear group $G/Z_{2}$, where $Z_{2}$ is the $2$-torsion of the center of $G$. This isomorphism of Hecke algebras provides a correspondence between certain gen…
Let $H$ be a generic affine Hecke algebra (Iwahori-Matsumoto definition) over a polynomial algebra with a finite number of indeterminates over the ring of integers. We prove the existence of an integral Bernstein-Lusztig basis related to the Iwahori-Matsumoto basis by a strictly upper triangular matrix, from which we deduce that the center $Z$ of $H$ is finitely generated and that $H$ is a finite type $Z$-module (this was proved after inversion of the parameters by Bernstein-Lusztig), and we give some applications to the theory of $H$-modules where the parameters act by 0. These results are re…
Let W be an Iwahori-Weyl group of a connected reductive group G over a non-archimedean local field. I prove that if w is an element of W that does not act on the corresponding apartment of G by a translation then one can apply to w a sequence of conjugations by simple reflections, each of which is length-preserving, resulting in an element w' for which there exists a simple reflection s such that l(sw's)>l(w'). Even for affine Weyl groups, a special case of Iwahori-Weyl groups and also an important subclass of Coxeter groups, this is a new fact about conjugacy classes. Further, there are impli…
We prove the rank 1 case of a conjecture of Frenkel-Gaitsgory: critical level Kac-Moody representations with regular central characters localize onto the affine Grassmannian. The method uses an analogue in local geometric Langlands of the existence of Whittaker models for most representations of $GL_2$ over a non-Archimedean field.
Harish-Chandra induction and restriction functors play a key role in the representation theory of reductive groups over finite fields. In this paper, extending earlier work of Dat, we introduce and study generalisations of these functors which apply to a wide range of finite and profinite groups, typical examples being compact open subgroups of reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields. We prove that these generalisations are compatible with two of the tools commonly used to study the (smooth, complex) representations of such groups, namely Clifford theory and the orbit method. As a t…
In 2014, Braverman, Kazhdan, Patnaik and Bardy-Panse, Gaussent and Rousseau associated Iwahori-Hecke algebras to Kac-Moody groups over non-Archimedean local fields. In a previous paper, we defined and studied their principal series representations. In 1982, Kato provided an irreducibility criterion for these representations, in the reductive case. We had obtained partially this criterion in the Kac-Moody case. In this paper, we prove this criterion in the Kac-Moody case.
We prove that for every Bushnell-Kutzko type that satisfies a certain rigidity assumption, the equivalence of categories between the corresponding Bernstein component and the category of modules for the Hecke algebra of the type induces a bijection between irreducible unitary representations in the two categories. This is a generalization of the unitarity criterion of Barbasch and Moy for representations with Iwahori fixed vectors.
Let $G$ denote a possibly discrete topological group admitting an open subgroup $I$ which is pro-$p$. If $H$ denotes the corresponding Hecke algebra over a field $k$ of characteristic $p$ then we study the adjunction between $H$-modules and $k$-linear smooth $G$-representations in terms of various model structures. If $H$ is a Gorenstein ring we single out a full subcategory of smooth $G$-representations which is equivalent to the category of all Gorenstein projective $H$-modules via the functor of $I$-invariants. This applies to groups of rational points of split connected reductive groups ov…
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. We prove that every Bernstein component in the smooth dual of each inner form of the general linear group $GL_n(F)$ is canonically in bijection with the extended quotient for the action, given by Bernstein, of a finite group on a complex torus. For inner forms of $SL_n(F)$ we prove that each Bernstein component is canonically in bijection with the associated twisted extended quotient. In both cases, the bijections satisfy naturality properties with respect to the tempered dual, parabolic induction, central character, and the local Langlands corresponde…
This paper deals with the geometric local theta correspondence at the Iwahori level for dual reductive pairs of type II over a non Archimedean field $F$ of characteristic $p\neq 2$ in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. First we construct and study the geometric version of the invariants of the Weil representation of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras. In the particular case of $(GL_1, GL_m)$ we give a complete geometric description of the corresponding category. The second part of the paper deals with geometric local Langlands functoriality at the Iwahori level in a general setting. Giv…
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected reductive group over a {non-archimedean local field} $F$. Let $K_\mathcal{F}$ be the parahoric subgroup attached to a facet $\mathcal{F}$ in the Bruhat--Tits building of $\mathbf{G}$. The ultimate goal of the present paper is to describe the center of the parahoric--Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}(\mathbf{G}(F)//K_{\mathcal{F}}, \mathbb{Z}[q^{-1}])$ with level $K_{\mathcal{F}}$ and prove the compatibility of generalized (twisted) Bernstein and Satake homomorphisms.
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic $0$ and $G=Sp(4,F)$. Let $(π,W)$ be an irreducible smooth self-dual representation $G$. The space $W$ of $π$ admits a non-degenerate $G$-invariant bilinear form $(\,,\,)$ which is unique up to scaling. The form $(\,,\,)$ is easily seen to be symmetric or skew-symmetric and we set $\varepsilon(π)=\pm 1$ accordingly. In this paper, we show that $\varepsilon{(π)}=1$ when $π$ is an Iwahori spherical representation of $G$.
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected reductive group defined over a locally compact non-archimedean field $F$, let $\mathbf{P}$ be a parabolic subgroup with Levi $\mathbf{M}$ and compatible with a pro-$p$ Iwahori subgroup of $G := \mathbf{G}(F)$. Let $R$ be a commutative unital ring. We introduce the parabolic pro-$p$ Iwahori--Hecke $R$-algebra $\mathcal{H}_R(P)$ of $P := \mathbf{P}(F)$ and construct two $R$-algebra morphisms $Θ^P_M\colon \mathcal{H}_R(P)\to \mathcal{H}_R(M)$ and $Ξ^P_G\colon \mathcal{H}_R(P) \to \mathcal{H}_R(G)$ into the pro-$p$ Iwahori--Hecke $R$-algebra of $M := \mathbf{M}(F)$ …
Let $F$ be a non-discrete non-Archimedean locally compact field. In this article for a level zero Bernstein component $s$, we classify those irreducible smooth representations of ${\rm GL}_n{\integers{F}}$ (called typical representations) whose appearance in a smooth irreducible representation $π$ of ${\rm GL}_n{F}$ implies that the cuspidal support of $π$ is $s$. These results extend, for level zero representations, the results of Henniart and Paškūnas on cuspidal representations. The results are independent of the characteristic of the base field.
We study the center of the pro-p Iwahori-Hecke ring H of a connected split p-adic reductive group G. For k an algebraically closed field with characteristic p, we prove that the center of the k-algebra H_k:= H\otimes_Z k contains an affine semigroup algebra which is naturally isomorphic to the Hecke algebra attached to any irreducible smooth k-representation of a given hyperspecial maximal compact subgroup of G. This isomorphism is obtained using the inverse Satake isomorphism constructed in arXiv:1207.5557. We apply this to classify the simple supersingular H_k-modules, study the supersingula…
In "All p-adic reductive groups are tame" Bernstein proved that for a reductive group G over a local non-archimedean field F and a compact open subgroup K of G there exists a uniform bound N(G,K) such that for every irreducible, smooth, and admissible representation V of G the dimension of the subspace of K-fixed vectors in V is bounded by N(G,K). In this note I repeat the proof of Bernstein and give my proof to one of the two main lemmas. The new proof of this lemma gives a new, sharper bound for the constant N(G,K).
Among connected linear algebraic groups, quasi-reductive groups generalize pseudo-reductive groups, which in turn form a useful relaxation of the notion of reductivity. We study quasi-reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields, focusing on aspects involving their locally compact topology. For such groups we construct valuated root data (in the sense of Bruhat--Tits) and we make them act nicely on affine buildings. We prove that they admit Iwasawa and Cartan decompositions, and we construct small compact open subgroups with an Iwahori decomposition. We also initiate the smooth represent…
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a split reductive $p$-adic group with connected centre. We show that each Bernstein block in the principal series of $\mathcal{G}$ admits a definite geometric structure, namely that of an extended quotient. For the Iwahori-spherical block, this extended quotient has the form $T//W$ where $T$ is a maximal torus in the Langlands dual group of $\mathcal{G}$ and $W$ is the Weyl group of $\mathcal{G}$.
