The Hilbert scheme of n points in the projective plane has a natural stratification obtained from the associated Hilbert series. In general, the precise inclusion relation between the closures of the strata is still unknown. Guerimand studied this problem for strata whose Hilbert series are as close as possible. Preimposing a certain technical condition he obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for the incidence of such strata. In this paper we present a new approach, based on deformation theory, to Guerimand's result. This allows us to show that the technical condition is not necessary.
We compute the integral Chow ring of the quotient stack $[(\mathbb{P}^1)^n/PGL_2]$, which contains $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ as a dense open, and determine a natural $\mathbb{Z}$-basis for the Chow ring in terms of certain ordered incidence strata. We further show that all $\mathbb{Z}$-linear relations between the classes of ordered incidence strata arise from an analogue of the WDVV relations in $A^\bullet(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$. Next we compute the classes of unordered incidence strata in the integral Chow ring of the quotient stack $[{\rm Sym}^n\mathbb{P}^1/PGL_2]$ and classify all $\math…
The main goal of this work is to construct and study a reasonable compactification of the strata of the moduli space of Abelian differentials. This allows us to compute the Kodaira dimension of some strata of the moduli space of Abelian differentials. The main ingredients to study the compactifications of the strata are a version of the plumbing cylinder construction for differential forms and an extension of the parity of the connected components of the strata to the differentials on curves of compact type. We study in detail the compactifications of the hyperelliptic minimal strata and of th…
To each affine variety $X$ and $m_1,\ldots,m_k\in \mathbb{C}$ such that no subset of the $m_i$ add to zero, we construct a variety which for $m_1,\ldots,m_k \in \mathbb{N}$ specializes to the closed $(m_1,\ldots,m_k)$-incidence stratum of $Sym^{m_1+\ldots+m_k}X$. These fit into a finite-type family, which is functorial in $X$, and which is topologically a family of $\mathbb{C}$-weighted configuration spaces. We verify our construction agrees with an analogous construction in the Deligne category $Rep(S_{d})$ for $d \in \mathbb{C}$. We next classify the singularity locus and branching behaviour…
Let Hilb^p be the Hilbert scheme parametrizing the closed subschemes of P^n with Hilbert polynomial p \in Q[t] over a field K of characteristic zero. By bounding below the cohomological Hilbert functions of the points of Hilb^p we define locally closed subspaces of the Hilbert scheme. The aim of this thesis is to show that some of these subspaces are connected. For this we exploit the ideals constructed by D. Mall. It turns out that these ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and that their initial ideals and their generic initial ideals coincide for any admissible term order.

It turns out that these ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and that their initial ideals with respect to the reverse lexicographic term order are generic initial ideals.
The present paper shall provide a framework for working with Gröbner bases over arbitrary rings $k$ with a prescribed finite standard set $Δ$. We show that the functor associating to a $k$-algebra $B$ the set of all reduced Gröbner bases with standard set $Δ$ is representable and that the representing scheme is a locally closed stratum in the Hilbert scheme of points. We cover the Hilbert scheme of points by open affine subschemes which represent the functor associating to a $k$-algebra $B$ the set of all border bases with standard set $Δ$ and give reasonably small sets of equations defining t…
We determine the codimension of the Betti strata of the family G(H) parametrizing graded Artinian quotients A of the polynomial ring R in two variables, having Hilbert function H. The Betti stratum G(B,H) parametrizes all such quotients having the graded Betti numbers determined by the relation degrees B. Our method is to identify G(B,H) as the product of determinantal varieties. We then use a result of M. Boij that reduces the calculation of codimension to showing that the most special stratum has the expected codimension. We also show that the closure of the Betti stratum is Cohen-Macaulay, …
We fix the lexicographic order $\prec$ on the polynomial ring $S=k[x_{1},...,x_{n}]$ over a ring $k$. We define $\Hi^{\precΔ}_{S/k}$, the moduli space of reduced Gröbner bases with a given finite standard set $Δ$, and its open subscheme $\Hi^{\precΔ,\et}_{S/k}$, the moduli space of families of $#Δ$ points whose attached ideal has the standard set $Δ$. We determine the number of irreducible and connected components of the latter scheme; we show that it is equidimensional over ${\rm Spec}\,k$; and we determine its relative dimension over ${\rm Spec} k$. We show that analogous statements do not h…
An open question is whether the Hilbert scheme of points of a high dimensional affine space satisfies Murphy's Law, as formulated by Vakil. In this short note, we instead consider the loci in the Hilbert scheme parametrizing punctual schemes with a given Hilbert function, and we show that these loci satisfy Murphy's Law. We also prove a related result for equivariant deformations of curve singularities with $\mathbb G_m$-action.
Let C be a locally planar curve. Its versal deformation admits a stratification by the genera of the fibres. The strata are singular; we show that their multiplicities at the central point are determined by the Euler numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points on C. These Euler numbers have made two prior appearances. First, in certain simple cases, they control the contribution of C to the Pandharipande-Thomas curve counting invariants of three-folds. In this context, our result identifies the strata multiplicities as the local contributions to the Gopakumar-Vafa BPS invariants. Second, when C i…
The Gröbner stratum of a monomial ideal $\id{j}$ is an affine variety that parametrizes the family of all ideals having $\id{j}$ as initial ideal (with respect to a fixed term ordering). The Gröbner strata can be equipped in a natural way of a structure of homogeneous variety and are in a close connection with Hilbert schemes of subvarieties in the projective space $\PP^n$. Using properties of the Gröbner strata we prove some sufficient conditions for the rationality of components of $\hilb_{p(z)}^n$. We show for instance that all the smooth, irreducible components in $\hilb_{p(z)}^n$ (or in i…
Given a smooth curve on a smooth surface, the Hilbert scheme of the surface is stratified according to the length of the intersection with the curve. The strata are highly singular. We show that this stratification admits a natural log-resolution, namely the stratified blowup. As a consequence, the induced Poisson structure on the Hilbert scheme of a Poisson surface has unobstructed deformations.
For a smooth projective variety $P$, we construct a Cartier divisor supported on the incidence locus in $\mathscr{C}_a (P) \times \mathscr{C}_{\dim(P)-a-1}(P)$. There is a natural definition of the corresponding line bundle on a product of Hilbert schemes, and we show this bundle descends to the Chow varieties. This answers a question posed by Mazur.
Let HH_{ab}(H) be the equivariant Hilbert scheme parametrizing the zero dimensional subschemes of the affine plane k^2, fixed under the one dimensional torus T_{ab}={(t^{-b},t^a), t\in k^*} and whose Hilbert function is H. This Hilbert scheme admits a natural stratification in Schubert cells which extends the notion of Schubert cells on Grassmannians. However, the incidence relations between the cells become more complicated than in the case of Grassmannians. In this paper, we give a necessary condition for the closure of a cell to meet another cell. In the particular case of Grassmannians, it…
Given a projetive surface $S$, using correspondences, we construct an infinite dimensional Lie algebra that acts on the direct sum $\Wfock$ of the cohomology groups of the incidence Hilbert schemes $S^{[n,n+1]}$ over all $n$. The algebra is related to an extension of an infinite dimensional Heisenberg algebra. The space $\Wfock$ is a highest weight representation of this algebra. Our result provides a representation-theoretic interpretation of Cheah's generating function of Betti numbers of the incidence Hilbert schemes. As a consequence, an additive basis of the cohomology group of the incide…
In this paper we study the geometry of the special fiber of Pappas-Rapoport models of Shimura varieties in the Hilbert case. More precisely we prove that the stratification induced by the Hodge polygon is a good stratification, which is false in the Hilbert-Siegel case for $g\geq 2$. Then we use known results on the convolution product of affine Grassmannians to describe the dimension of the strata and obtain that the forgetting morphism to the Kottwitz PEL model is flat in restriction to Hodge strata.
The application of methods of computational algebra has recently introduced new tools for the study of Hilbert schemes. The key idea is to define flat families of ideals endowed with a scheme structure whose defining equations can be determined by algorithmic procedures. For this reason, several authors developed new methods, based on the combinatorial properties of Borel-fixed ideals, that allow to associate to each ideal $J$ of this type a scheme $\mathbf{Mf}_{J}$, called $J$-marked scheme. In this paper we provide a solid functorial foundation to marked schemes and show that the algorithmic…
The study of the stratification associated to the number of generators of the ideals in the punctual Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plain goes back to the '70s. In this paper, we present an elegant formula for the E-polynomials of these strata.
Let $S$ be the affine plane $\C^2$ together with an appropriate $\mathbb T = \C^*$ action. Let $\hil{m,m+1}$ be the incidence Hilbert scheme. Parallel to \cite{LQ}, we construct an infinite dimensional Lie algebra that acts on the direct sum $$\Wft = \bigoplus_{m=0}^{+\infty}H^{2(m+1)}_{\mathbb T}(S^{[m,m+1]})$$ of the middle-degree equivariant cohomology group of $\hil{m,m+1}$. The algebra is related to the loop algebra of an infinite dimensional Heisenberg algebra. In addition, we study the transformations among three different linear bases of $\Wft$. Our results are applied to the ring stru…
We study closures of GL_2(R)-orbits on the total space of the Hodge bundle over the moduli space of curves under the assumption that they are algebraic manifolds. We show that, in the generic stratum, such manifolds are the whole stratum, the hyperelliptic locus or parameterize curves whose Jacobian has additional endomorphisms. This follows from a cohomological description of the tangent bundle to strata. For non-generic strata similar results can be shown by a case-by-case inspection. We also propose to study a notion of 'linear manifold' that comprises Teichmueller curves, Hilbert modular s…
We prove the existence of an affine paving for the three-step flag Hilbert scheme $$ \text{Hilb}^{n, n+1, n+2}(0) := \left\{\mathbb{C}[[x,y]]\supset I_n\supset I_{n+1}\supset I_{n+2}: I_i \,\,\text{ ideals with } \text{dim}_{\mathbb{C}} {\mathbb{C}[x,y]}/{I_i} = i \right\} $$ of 0-dimensional subschemes that are supported at the origin of $\mathbb{C}^2$. This is done by showing that the space stratifies in smooth subvarieties, the Hilbert-Samuel's strata, each of which has an affine paving with cells of known dimension, indexed by marked Young diagrams. The affine pavings of the Hilbert-Samuel…
The Hilbert scheme of $n$ points in the affine plane contains the open subscheme parametrizing $n$ distinct points in the affine plane, and the closed subscheme parametrizing ideals of codimension $n$ supported at the origin of the affine plane. Both schemes admit Białynicki-Birula decompositions into moduli spaces of ideals with prescribed lexicographic Gröbner deformations. We show that both decompositions are stratifications in the sense that the closure of each stratum is a union of certain other strata. We show that the corresponding two partial orderings on the set of of monomial ideals …
Given a homogeneous ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over a field, one may record, for each degree $d$ and for each polynomial $f\in I_d$, the set of monomials in $f$ with nonzero coefficients. These data collectively form the tropicalization of $I$. Tropicalizing ideals induces a "matroid stratification" on any (multigraded) Hilbert scheme. Very little is known about the structure of these stratifications. In this paper, we explore many examples of matroid strata, including some with interesting combinatorial structure, and give a convenient way of visualizing them. We show that the matroid str…
In this paper we provide a new method to certify that a nearby polynomial system has a singular isolated root with a prescribed multiplicity structure. More precisely, given a polynomial system f $=(f\_1, \ldots, f\_N)\in C[x\_1, \ldots, x\_n]^N$, we present a Newton iteration on an extended deflated system that locally converges, under regularity conditions, to a small deformation of $f$ such that this deformed system has an exact singular root. The iteration simultaneously converges to the coordinates of the singular root and the coefficients of the so called inverse system that describes th…
Let $\mathcal{H}_{a,b}^n$ denote the component of the Hilbert scheme whose general point parameterizes an $a$-plane union a $b$-plane meeting transversely in $\mathbf{P}^n$. We show that $\mathcal{H}_{a,b}^n$ is smooth and isomorphic to successive blow ups of $\mathbf{Gr}(a,n) \times \mathbf{Gr}(b,n)$ or $\text{Sym}^2 \mathbf{Gr}(a,n)$ along certain incidence correspondences. We classify the subschemes parameterized by $\mathcal{H}_{a,b}^n$ and show that this component has a unique Borel fixed point. We also study the birational geometry of this component. In particular, we describe the effect…
We study the geometry and topology of Hilbert schemes of points on the orbifold surface [C^2/G], respectively the singular quotient surface C^2/G, where G is a finite subgroup of SL(2,C) of type A or D. We give a decomposition of the (equivariant) Hilbert scheme of the orbifold into affine space strata indexed by a certain combinatorial set, the set of Young walls. The generating series of Euler characteristics of Hilbert schemes of points of the singular surface of type A or D is computed in terms of an explicit formula involving a specialized character of the basic representation of the corr…
We give an orbifold Riemann-Roch formula in closed form for the Hilbert series of a quasismooth polarized n-fold X,D, under the assumption that X is projectively Gorenstein with only isolated orbifold points. Our formula is a sum of parts each of which is integral and Gorenstein symmetric of the same canonical weight; the orbifold parts are called "ice cream functions". This form of the Hilbert series is particularly useful for computer algebra, and we illustrate it on examples of K3 surfaces and Calabi-Yau 3-folds. These results apply also with higher dimensional orbifold strata (see [A. Buck…

We study the enumerative geometry of rational curves on the Hilbert schemes of points of a K3 surface. Let $S$ be a K3 surface and let $\mathsf{Hilb}^d(S)$ be the Hilbert scheme of $d$ points of $S$. In case of elliptically fibered K3 surfaces $S \to \mathbb{P}^1$, we calculate genus $0$ Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathsf{Hilb}^d(S)$, which count rational curves incident to two generic fibers of the induced Lagrangian fibration $\mathsf{Hilb}^d(S) \to \mathbb{P}^d$. The generating series of these invariants is the Fourier expansion of a power of the Jacobi theta function times a modular form…
