The present paper shall provide a framework for working with Gröbner bases over arbitrary rings $k$ with a prescribed finite standard set $Δ$. We show that the functor associating to a $k$-algebra $B$ the set of all reduced Gröbner bases with standard set $Δ$ is representable and that the representing scheme is a locally closed stratum in the Hilbert scheme of points. We cover the Hilbert scheme of points by open affine subschemes which represent the functor associating to a $k$-algebra $B$ the set of all border bases with standard set $Δ$ and give reasonably small sets of equations defining these schemes. We show that the schemes parametrizing Gröbner bases are connected; give a connectedness criterion for the schemes parametrizing border bases; and prove that the decomposition of the Hilbert scheme of points into the locally closed strata parametrizing Gröbner bases is not a stratification.
The Hilbert scheme of n points in the projective plane has a natural stratification obtained from the associated Hilbert series. In general, the precise inclusion relation between the closures of the strata is still unknown. Guerimand studied this problem for strata whose Hilbert series are as close as possible. Preimposing a certain technical condition he obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for the incidence of such strata. In this paper we present a new approach, based on deformation theory, to Guerimand's result. This allows us to show that the technical condition is not necessary.
Let Hilb^p be the Hilbert scheme parametrizing the closed subschemes of P^n with Hilbert polynomial p \in Q[t] over a field K of characteristic zero. By bounding below the cohomological Hilbert functions of the points of Hilb^p we define locally closed subspaces of the Hilbert scheme. The aim of this thesis is to show that some of these subspaces are connected. For this we exploit the ideals constructed by D. Mall. It turns out that these ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and that their initial ideals and their generic initial ideals coincide for any admissible term order.

We determine the codimension of the Betti strata of the family G(H) parametrizing graded Artinian quotients A of the polynomial ring R in two variables, having Hilbert function H. The Betti stratum G(B,H) parametrizes all such quotients having the graded Betti numbers determined by the relation degrees B. Our method is to identify G(B,H) as the product of determinantal varieties. We then use a result of M. Boij that reduces the calculation of codimension to showing that the most special stratum has the expected codimension. We also show that the closure of the Betti stratum is Cohen-Macaulay, …
An open question is whether the Hilbert scheme of points of a high dimensional affine space satisfies Murphy's Law, as formulated by Vakil. In this short note, we instead consider the loci in the Hilbert scheme parametrizing punctual schemes with a given Hilbert function, and we show that these loci satisfy Murphy's Law. We also prove a related result for equivariant deformations of curve singularities with $\mathbb G_m$-action.
We fix the lexicographic order $\prec$ on the polynomial ring $S=k[x_{1},...,x_{n}]$ over a ring $k$. We define $\Hi^{\precΔ}_{S/k}$, the moduli space of reduced Gröbner bases with a given finite standard set $Δ$, and its open subscheme $\Hi^{\precΔ,\et}_{S/k}$, the moduli space of families of $#Δ$ points whose attached ideal has the standard set $Δ$. We determine the number of irreducible and connected components of the latter scheme; we show that it is equidimensional over ${\rm Spec}\,k$; and we determine its relative dimension over ${\rm Spec} k$. We show that analogous statements do not h…
Let C be a locally planar curve. Its versal deformation admits a stratification by the genera of the fibres. The strata are singular; we show that their multiplicities at the central point are determined by the Euler numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points on C. These Euler numbers have made two prior appearances. First, in certain simple cases, they control the contribution of C to the Pandharipande-Thomas curve counting invariants of three-folds. In this context, our result identifies the strata multiplicities as the local contributions to the Gopakumar-Vafa BPS invariants. Second, when C i…
The Gröbner stratum of a monomial ideal $\id{j}$ is an affine variety that parametrizes the family of all ideals having $\id{j}$ as initial ideal (with respect to a fixed term ordering). The Gröbner strata can be equipped in a natural way of a structure of homogeneous variety and are in a close connection with Hilbert schemes of subvarieties in the projective space $\PP^n$. Using properties of the Gröbner strata we prove some sufficient conditions for the rationality of components of $\hilb_{p(z)}^n$. We show for instance that all the smooth, irreducible components in $\hilb_{p(z)}^n$ (or in i…
In this paper we study the geometry of the special fiber of Pappas-Rapoport models of Shimura varieties in the Hilbert case. More precisely we prove that the stratification induced by the Hodge polygon is a good stratification, which is false in the Hilbert-Siegel case for $g\geq 2$. Then we use known results on the convolution product of affine Grassmannians to describe the dimension of the strata and obtain that the forgetting morphism to the Kottwitz PEL model is flat in restriction to Hodge strata.
The application of methods of computational algebra has recently introduced new tools for the study of Hilbert schemes. The key idea is to define flat families of ideals endowed with a scheme structure whose defining equations can be determined by algorithmic procedures. For this reason, several authors developed new methods, based on the combinatorial properties of Borel-fixed ideals, that allow to associate to each ideal $J$ of this type a scheme $\mathbf{Mf}_{J}$, called $J$-marked scheme. In this paper we provide a solid functorial foundation to marked schemes and show that the algorithmic…
The study of the stratification associated to the number of generators of the ideals in the punctual Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plain goes back to the '70s. In this paper, we present an elegant formula for the E-polynomials of these strata.
Given a smooth curve on a smooth surface, the Hilbert scheme of the surface is stratified according to the length of the intersection with the curve. The strata are highly singular. We show that this stratification admits a natural log-resolution, namely the stratified blowup. As a consequence, the induced Poisson structure on the Hilbert scheme of a Poisson surface has unobstructed deformations.
We study closures of GL_2(R)-orbits on the total space of the Hodge bundle over the moduli space of curves under the assumption that they are algebraic manifolds. We show that, in the generic stratum, such manifolds are the whole stratum, the hyperelliptic locus or parameterize curves whose Jacobian has additional endomorphisms. This follows from a cohomological description of the tangent bundle to strata. For non-generic strata similar results can be shown by a case-by-case inspection. We also propose to study a notion of 'linear manifold' that comprises Teichmueller curves, Hilbert modular s…
We prove the existence of an affine paving for the three-step flag Hilbert scheme $$ \text{Hilb}^{n, n+1, n+2}(0) := \left\{\mathbb{C}[[x,y]]\supset I_n\supset I_{n+1}\supset I_{n+2}: I_i \,\,\text{ ideals with } \text{dim}_{\mathbb{C}} {\mathbb{C}[x,y]}/{I_i} = i \right\} $$ of 0-dimensional subschemes that are supported at the origin of $\mathbb{C}^2$. This is done by showing that the space stratifies in smooth subvarieties, the Hilbert-Samuel's strata, each of which has an affine paving with cells of known dimension, indexed by marked Young diagrams. The affine pavings of the Hilbert-Samuel…
The Hilbert scheme of $n$ points in the affine plane contains the open subscheme parametrizing $n$ distinct points in the affine plane, and the closed subscheme parametrizing ideals of codimension $n$ supported at the origin of the affine plane. Both schemes admit Białynicki-Birula decompositions into moduli spaces of ideals with prescribed lexicographic Gröbner deformations. We show that both decompositions are stratifications in the sense that the closure of each stratum is a union of certain other strata. We show that the corresponding two partial orderings on the set of of monomial ideals …
Given a homogeneous ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over a field, one may record, for each degree $d$ and for each polynomial $f\in I_d$, the set of monomials in $f$ with nonzero coefficients. These data collectively form the tropicalization of $I$. Tropicalizing ideals induces a "matroid stratification" on any (multigraded) Hilbert scheme. Very little is known about the structure of these stratifications. In this paper, we explore many examples of matroid strata, including some with interesting combinatorial structure, and give a convenient way of visualizing them. We show that the matroid str…
In this paper we provide a new method to certify that a nearby polynomial system has a singular isolated root with a prescribed multiplicity structure. More precisely, given a polynomial system f $=(f\_1, \ldots, f\_N)\in C[x\_1, \ldots, x\_n]^N$, we present a Newton iteration on an extended deflated system that locally converges, under regularity conditions, to a small deformation of $f$ such that this deformed system has an exact singular root. The iteration simultaneously converges to the coordinates of the singular root and the coefficients of the so called inverse system that describes th…
We study the geometry and topology of Hilbert schemes of points on the orbifold surface [C^2/G], respectively the singular quotient surface C^2/G, where G is a finite subgroup of SL(2,C) of type A or D. We give a decomposition of the (equivariant) Hilbert scheme of the orbifold into affine space strata indexed by a certain combinatorial set, the set of Young walls. The generating series of Euler characteristics of Hilbert schemes of points of the singular surface of type A or D is computed in terms of an explicit formula involving a specialized character of the basic representation of the corr…

For a given monomial ideal $J \subset k[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ and a given monomial order $\prec$, the moduli functor of all reduced Gröbner bases with respect to $\prec$ whose initial ideal is $J$ is determined. In some cases, such a functor is representable by an affine scheme of finite type over $k$, and a locally closed subfunctor of a Hilbert scheme. The moduli space is called the Gröbner basis scheme, the Gröbner strata and so on if it exists. This paper introduces an alternative procedure for explicitly constructing a defining ideal of the Gröbner basis scheme and its Zariski tangent spaces…
