Consider a modified, stable, two node Jackson network where server 2 helps server 1 when server 2 is idle. The probability of a large deviation of the number of customers at node one can be calculated using the flat boundary theory of Schwartz and Weiss [Large Deviations Performance Analysis (1994),
Chapman and Hall, New York]. Surprisingly, however, these calculations show that the proportion of time spent on the boundary, where server 2 is idle, may be zero. This is in sharp contrast to the unmodified Jackson network which spends a nonzero proportion of time on this boundary.
We prove that the long term distribution of the queue length process in an ergodic generalised Jackson network obeys the Large Deviation Principle with a deviation function given by the quasipotential. The latter is related to the unique long term idempotent distribution, which is also a stationary idempotent distribution, of the large deviation limit of the queue length processes. The proof draws on developments in queueing network stability and idempotent probability.
This paper is devoted to the problem of sample path large deviations for multidimensional queueing models with feedback. We derive a new version of the contraction principle where the continuous map is not well-defined on the whole space: we give conditions under which it allows to identify the rate function. We illustrate our technique by deriving a large deviation principle for a class of networks that contains the classical Jackson networks.
We study Donsker-Watanabe's delta functions associated with strongly hypoelliptic diffusion processes indexed by a small parameter. They are finite Borel measures on the Wiener space and admit a rough path lift. Our main result is a large deviation principle of Schilder type for the lifted measures on the geometric rough path space as the scale parameter tends to zero. As a corollary, we obtain a large deviation principle conjectured by Takanobu and Watanabe, which is a generalization of a large deviation principle of Freidlin-Wentzell type for pinned diffusion processes.
Starting from the construction of a geometric rough path associated with a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in]{1/4}, {1/2}[$ given by Coutin and Qian (2002), we prove a large deviation principle in the space of geometric rough paths, extending classical results on Gaussian processes. As a by-product, geometric rough paths associated to elements of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space of the fractional Brownian motion are obtained and an explicit integral representation is given.
In rough stochastic PDE theory of Hairer type, rough path lifts with respect to the space variable of two-parameter continuous Gaussian processes play a main role. A prominent example of such processes is the solution of the stochastic heat equation under the periodic condition. The main objective of this paper is to show that the law of the spatial lift of this process satisfies a Schilder type large deviation principle on the continuous path space over a geometric rough path space.
We construct a quasi-sure version (in the sense of Malliavin) of geometric rough paths associated with a Gaussian process with long-time memory. As an application we establish a large deviation principle (LDP) for capacities for such Gaussian rough paths. Together with Lyons' universal limit theorem, our results yield immediately the corresponding results for pathwise solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by such Gaussian process in the sense of rough paths. Moreover, our LDP result implies the result of Yoshida on the LDP for capacities over the abstract Wiener space associate…

This paper considers the problem of rate function identification for multidimensional queueing models with feedback. A set of techniques are introduced which allow this identification when the model possesses certain structural properties. The main tools used are representation formulas for exponential integrals, weak convergence methods, and the regularity properties of associated Skorokhod Problems. Two examples are treated as special cases of the general theory: the classical Jackson network and a model for processor sharing.
This paper is devoted to investigating Freidlin-Wentzell's large deviation principle for one (spatial) dimensional nonlinear stochastic wave equation $\frac{\partial^2 u^{\e}(t,x)}{\partial t^2}=\frac{\partial^2 u^{\e}(t,x)}{\partial x^2}+\sqrt{\e}σ(t, x, u^{\e}(t,x))\dot{W}(t,x)$, where $\dot{W}$ is white in time and fractional in space with Hurst parameter $H\in(\frac 14,\frac 12)$. The variational framework and the modified weak convergence criterion proposed by Matoussi et al. \cite{MSZ} are adopted here.
We study Freidlin-Wentzell's large deviation principle for one dimensional nonlinear stochastic heat equation driven by a Gaussian noise: $$\frac{\partial u^\varepsilon(t,x)}{\partial t} = \frac{\partial^2 u^\varepsilon(t,x)}{\partial x^2}+\sqrt{\varepsilon} σ(t, x, u^\varepsilon(t,x))\dot{W}(t,x),\quad t> 0,\, x\in\mathbb{R},$$ where $\dot W$ is white in time and fractional in space with Hurst parameter $H\in(\frac 14,\frac 12)$. Recently, Hu and Wang ({\it Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Probab. Stat.} {\bf 58} (2022) 379-423) studied the well-posedness of this equation without the technical condi…
Since T. Lyons invented rough path theory, one of its most successful applications is a new proof of Freidlin-Wentzell's large deviation principle for diffusion processes. In this paper we extend this method to the case of pinned diffusion processes under a mild ellipticity assumption. Besides rough path theory, our main tool is quasi-sure analysis, which is a kind of potential theory in Malliavin calculus.
We study the small-time behaviour of the rough Bergomi model, introduced by Bayer, Friz and Gatheral (2016), and prove a large deviations principle for a rescaled version of the normalised log stock price process, which then allows us to characterise the small-time behaviour of the implied volatility.
We introduce time-inhomogeneous stochastic volatility models, in which the volatility is described by a nonnegative function of a Volterra type continuous Gaussian process that may have very rough sample paths. The main results obtained in the paper are sample path and small-noise large deviation principles for the log-price process in a time-inhomogeneous super rough Gaussian model under very mild restrictions. We use these results to study the asymptotic behavior of binary barrier options, exit time probability functions, and call options.
We extend the Markov additive methodology developed in [Ann. Appl. Probab. 9 (1999) 110-145, Ann. Appl. Probab. 11 (2001) 596-607] to obtain the sharp asymptotics of the steady state probability of a queueing network when one of the nodes gets large. We focus on a new phenomenon we call a bridge. The bridge cases occur when the Markovian part of the twisted Markov additive process is one null recurrent or one transient, while the jitter cases treated in [Ann. Appl. Probab. 9 (1999) 110-145, Ann. Appl. Probab. 11 (2001) 596-607] occur when the Markovian part is (one) positive recurrent. The asy…
We consider rough stochastic volatility models where the driving noise of volatility has fractional scaling, in the "rough" regime of Hurst parameter $H < 1/2$. This regime recently attracted a lot of attention both from the statistical and option pricing point of view. With focus on the latter, we sharpen the large deviation results of Forde-Zhang (2017) in a way that allows us to zoom-in around the money while maintaining full analytical tractability. More precisely, this amounts to proving higher order moderate deviation estimates, only recently introduced in the option pricing context. Thi…
The paper considers a continuous-time birth-death process where the jump rate has an asymptotically polynomial dependence on the process position. We obtain a rough exponential asymptotics for the probability of excursions of a re-scaled process contained within a neighborhood of a given continuous non-negative function.
We establish a Sanov type large deviation principle for an ensemble of interacting Brownian rough paths. As application a large deviations for the ($k$-layer, enhanced) empirical measure of weakly interacting diffusions is obtained. This in turn implies a propagation of chaos result in rough path spaces and allows for a robust subsequent analysis of the particle system and its McKean-Vlasov type limit, as shown in two corollaries.
We study a class of dissipative PDE's perturbed by an unbounded kick force. Under some natural assumptions, the restrictions of solutions to integer times form a homogeneous Markov process. Assuming that the noise is rough with respect to the space variables and has a non-degenerate law, we prove that the system in question satisfies a large deviation principle in tau-topology. Under some additional hypotheses, we establish a Gallavotti-Cohen type symmetry for the rate function of an entropy production functional and the strict positivity and finiteness of the mean entropy production in the st…
Asymptotics deviation probabilities of the sum S n = X 1 + $\times$ $\times$ $\times$ + X n of independent and identically distributed real-valued random variables have been extensively investigated, in particular when X 1 is not exponentially integrable. For instance, A.V. Nagaev formulated exact asymptotics results for P(S n > x n) when x n > n 1/2 (see, [13, 14]). In this paper, we derive rough asymptotics results (at logarithmic scale) with shorter proofs relying on classical tools of large deviation theory and expliciting the rate function at the transition.
Using a rough path formulation, we investigate existence, uniqueness and regularity for the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with Stratonovich noise on the one dimensional torus. As a main result we show the continuity of the so-called Itô-Lyons map in the energy spaces $L^\infty(0,T;H^k)\cap L^2(0,T;H^{k+1})$ for any $k\ge1$. The proof proceeds in two steps. First, based on an energy estimate in the aforementioned space together with a compactness argument we prove existence of a unique solution, implying the continuous dependence in a weaker norm. This is then strengthened in the …
Importance sampling is a technique that is commonly used to speed up Monte Carlo simulation of rare events. However, little is known regarding the design of efficient importance sampling algorithms in the context of queueing networks. The standard approach, which simulates the system using an a priori fixed change of measure suggested by large deviation analysis, has been shown to fail in even the simplest network setting (e.g., a two-node tandem network). Exploiting connections between importance sampling, differential games, and classical subsolutions of the corresponding Isaacs equation, we…
We present a new methodology to analyze large classes of (classical and rough) stochastic volatility models, with special regard to short-time and small noise formulae for option prices. Our main tool is the theory of regularity structures, which we use in the form of [Bayer et al; A regularity structure for rough volatility, 2017]. In essence, we implement a Laplace method on the space of models (in the sense of Hairer), which generalizes classical works of Azencott and Ben Arous on path space and then Aida, Inahama--Kawabi on rough path space. When applied to rough volatility models, e.g. in…
For a family of bond percolation models on Z^{2} that includes the Fortuin-Kasteleyn random cluster model, we consider properties of the ``droplet'' that results, in the percolating regime, from conditioning on the existence of an open dual circuit surrounding the origin and enclosing at least (or exactly) a given large area A. This droplet is a close surrogate for the one obtained by Dobrushin, Kotecký and Shlosman by conditioning the Ising model; it approximates an area-A Wulff shape. The local part of the deviation from the Wulff shape (the ``local roughness'') is the inward deviation of th…
We study the droplet that results from conditioning the subcritical Fortuin-Kasteleyn planar random cluster model on the presence of an open circuit Gamma_0 encircling the origin and enclosing an area of at least (or exactly) n^2. We consider local deviation of the droplet boundary, measured in a radial sense by the maximum local roughness, MLR(Gamma_0), this being the maximum distance from a point in the circuit Gamma_0 to the boundary of the circuit's convex hull; and in a longitudinal sense by what we term maximum facet length, MFL(Gamma_0), namely, the length of the longest line segment of…
This is the first in a series of three papers that addresses the behaviour of the droplet that results, in the percolating phase, from conditioning the Fortuin-Kasteleyn planar random cluster model on the presence of an open dual circuit Gamma_0 encircling the origin and enclosing an area of at least (or exactly) n^2. (By the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation, the model is a close relative of the droplet formed by conditioning the Potts model on an excess of spins of a given type.) We consider local deviation of the droplet boundary, measured in a radial sense by the maximum local roughness, ML…
