This paper considers the problem of rate function identification for multidimensional queueing models with feedback. A set of techniques are introduced which allow this identification when the model possesses certain structural properties. The main tools used are representation formulas for exponential integrals, weak convergence methods, and the regularity properties of associated Skorokhod Problems. Two examples are treated as special cases of the general theory: the classical Jackson network and a model for processor sharing.
This paper is devoted to the problem of sample path large deviations for multidimensional queueing models with feedback. We derive a new version of the contraction principle where the continuous map is not well-defined on the whole space: we give conditions under which it allows to identify the rate function. We illustrate our technique by deriving a large deviation principle for a class of networks that contains the classical Jackson networks.
We study the design of dynamic scheduling controls in closed queueing networks with a fixed number of jobs. Each time a server becomes available, the controller has (limited) flexibility in choosing the buffer from which to serve a job. If no jobs are available at any compatible buffer, the server idles. If the job is served, it relocates to a ``destination'' buffer. We study how to maximize throughput in steady state via a large deviations analysis. We propose a family of simple state-dependent policies called Scaled MaxWeight (SMW) policies that dynamically manage the distribution of jobs in…
A multi-class single-server queueing model with finite buffers, in which scheduling and admission of customers are subject to control, is studied in the moderate deviation heavy traffic regime. A risk-sensitive cost set over a finite time horizon $[0,T]$ is considered. The main result is the asymptotic optimality of a control policy derived via an underlying differential game. The result is the first to address a queueing control problem at the moderate deviation regime that goes beyond models having the so called pathwise minimality property. Moreover, despite the well known fact that an opti…
We consider multiclass feedforward queueing networks with first in first out and priority service disciplines at the nodes, and class dependent deterministic routing between nodes. The random behavior of the network is constructed from cumulative arrival and service time processes which are assumed to satisfy an appropriate sample path large deviation principle. We establish logarithmic asymptotics of large deviations for waiting time, idle time, queue length, departure and sojourn-time processes in critical loading. This transfers similar results from Puhalskii about single class queueing net…
We study a differential game that governs the moderate-deviation heavy-traffic asymptotics of a multiclass single-server queueing control problem with a risk-sensitive cost. We consider a cost set on a finite but sufficiently large time horizon, and show that this formulation leads to stationary feedback policies for the game. Several aspects of the game are explored, including its characterization via a (one-dimensional) free boundary problem, the semi-explicit solution of an optimal strategy, and the specification of a saddle point. We emphasize the analogy to the well-known Harrison-Taksar …
We consider multi-class single-server queueing networks that have a product form stationary distribution. A new limit result proves a sequence of such networks converges weakly to a stochastic flow level model. The stochastic flow level model found is insensitive. A large deviation principle for the stationary distribution of these multi-class queueing networks is also found. Its rate function has a dual form that coincides with proportional fairness. We then give the first rigorous proof that the stationary throughput of a multi-class single-server queueing network converges to a proportional…
This paper develops tools to obtain robust probabilistic estimates for queueing models at the large deviations (LD) scale. These tools are based on the recently introduced robust Rényi bounds, which provide LD estimates (and more generally risk-sensitive (RS) cost estimates) that hold uniformly over an uncertainty class of models, provided that the class is defined in terms of Rényi divergence with respect to a reference model and that estimates are available for the reference model. One very attractive quality of the approach is that the class to which the estimates apply may consist of hard …
Consider a queueing system fed by traffic from $N$ independent and identically distributed marked point processes. We establish several novel sample path large deviations results in the scaled uniform topology for such a system with a small buffer. This includes both the heavily loaded case (the load grows as $N\rightarrow\infty$) and the previously unexplored lightly loaded case (the load vanishes as $N\rightarrow\infty$); this latter case requires the introduction of novel speed scalings for such queueing systems. Alongside these sample path large deviations results, we introduce a new frame…
Multiclass open queueing networks find wide applications in communication, computer and fabrication networks. Often one is interested in steady-state performance measures associated with these networks. Conceptually, under mild conditions, a regenerative structure exists in multiclass networks, making them amenable to regenerative simulation for estimating the steady-state performance measures. However, typically, identification of a regenerative structure in these networks is difficult. A well known exception is when all the interarrival times are exponentially distributed, where the instants…
We prove that the long term distribution of the queue length process in an ergodic generalised Jackson network obeys the Large Deviation Principle with a deviation function given by the quasipotential. The latter is related to the unique long term idempotent distribution, which is also a stationary idempotent distribution, of the large deviation limit of the queue length processes. The proof draws on developments in queueing network stability and idempotent probability.
Importance sampling is a technique that is commonly used to speed up Monte Carlo simulation of rare events. However, little is known regarding the design of efficient importance sampling algorithms in the context of queueing networks. The standard approach, which simulates the system using an a priori fixed change of measure suggested by large deviation analysis, has been shown to fail in even the simplest network setting (e.g., a two-node tandem network). Exploiting connections between importance sampling, differential games, and classical subsolutions of the corresponding Isaacs equation, we…
This paper considers Gaussian flows multiplexed in a queueing network. A single node being a useful but often incomplete setting, we examine more advanced models. We focus on a (two-node) tandem queue, fed by a large number of Gaussian inputs. With service rates and buffer sizes at both nodes scaled appropriately, Schilder's sample-path large-deviations theorem can be applied to calculate the asymptotics of the overflow probability of the second queue. More specifically, we derive a lower bound on the exponential decay rate of this overflow probability and present an explicit condition for the…
This paper is devoted to the problem of sample path large deviations for the Markov processes on R_+^N having a constant but different transition mechanism on each boundary set {x:x_i=0 for i\notinΛ, x_i>0 for i\inΛ}. The global sample path large deviation principle and an integral representation of the rate function are derived from local large deviation estimates. Our results complete the proof of Dupuis and Ellis of the sample path large deviation principle for Markov processes describing a general class of queueing networks.
Our model is a constrained homogeneous random walk in a nonnegative orthant Z_+^d. The convergence to stationarity for such a random walk can often be checked by constructing a Lyapunov function. The same Lyapunov function can also be used for computing approximately the stationary distribution of this random walk, using methods developed by Meyn and Tweedie. In this paper we show that, for this type of random walks, computing the stationary probability exactly is an undecidable problem: no algorithm can exist to achieve this task. We then prove that computing large deviation rates for this mo…
We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical measure process associated with a general class of finite-state mean field interacting particle systems with Lipschitz continuous transition rates that satisfy a certain ergodicity condition. The approach is based on a variational representation for functionals of a Poisson random measure. Under an appropriate strengthening of the ergodicity condition, we also prove a locally uniform large deviation principle. The main novelty is that more than one particle is allowed to change its state simultaneously, and so a standard approach to th…
We consider the problem of efficient simulation estimation of the density function at the tails, and the probability of large deviations for a sum of independent, identically distributed, light-tailed and non-lattice random vectors. The latter problem besides being of independent interest, also forms a building block for more complex rare event problems that arise, for instance, in queueing and financial credit risk modelling. It has been extensively studied in literature where state independent exponential twisting based importance sampling has been shown to be asymptotically efficient and a …
We prove that bridges of subelliptic diffusions on a compact manifold, with distinct ends, satisfy a large deviation principle in a space of Holder continuous functions, with a good rate function, when the travel time tends to 0. This leads to the identification of the deterministic first order asymptotics of the distribution of the bridge under generic conditions on the endpoints of the bridge.

Large deviations of conservative interacting particle systems, such as the zero range process, about their hydrodynamic limit and their respective rate functions lead to the analysis of the skeleton equation; a degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic PDE with irregular drift. We develop a robust well-posedness theory for such PDEs in energy-critical spaces based on concepts of renormalized solutions and the equation's kinetic form. We establish these properties by proving that renormalized solutions are equivalent to classical weak solutions, extending concepts of [DiPerna, Lions; Ann. Math., 1989], […
