This article is the second part in the series of articles where we are developing theory of valuations on manifolds. Roughly speaking valuations could be thought as finitely additive measures on a class of nice subsets of a manifold which satisfy some additional assumptions.
The goal of this article is to introduce a notion of a smooth valuation on an arbitrary smooth manifold and establish some of the basic properties of it.
This is the first part of a series of articles where we are going to develop theory of valuations on manifolds generalizing the classical theory of continuous valuations on convex subsets of a linear space. In this article we still work only with linear spaces. We introduce a space of smooth (non-translation invariant) valuations on a finite dimensional linear space. We present three descriptions of this space. We describe the canonical multiplicative structure on it generalizing the results for polynomial valuations obtained by the author in Geom. Funct. Anal. 14 (2004).
This is the fourth part in the series of articles math.MG/0503397, math.MG/0503399, math.MG/0509512 where the theory of valuations on manifolds is developed. In this part it is shown that the filtration on valuations introduced in math.MG/0503399 is compatible with the product. Then it is proved that the Euler-Verdier involution on smooth valuations introduced in math.MG/0503399 is an automorphism of the algebra of valuations. Then an integration functional on valuations with compact support is introduced, and a property of selfduality of valuations is proved. Next a space of generalized valua…
This is a non-technical survey of a recent theory of valuations on manifolds constructed in math.MG/0503397, math.MG/0503399, math.MG/0509512, math.MG/0511171 and actually a guide to this series of articles. We review also some recent related results obtained by a number of people. We formulate some open questions.
One constructs new operations of pull-back and push-forward on valuations on manifolds with respect to submersions and immersions. A general Radon type transform on valuations is introduced using these operations and the product on valuations. It is shown that the classical Radon transform on smooth functions, and the well known Radon transform on constructible functions with respect to the Euler characteristic are special cases of this new Radon transform. An inversion formula for the Radon transform on valuations has been proven in a specific case of real projective spaces. Relations of thes…
We construct valuations on the space of finite-valued convex functions using integration of differential forms over the differential cycle associated to a convex function. We describe the kernel of this procedure and show that the intersection of this space of smooth valuations with the space of all continuous dually epi-translation invariant valuations on convex functions is dense in the latter. As an application, we obtain a description of 1-homogeneous, continuous, dually epi-translation invariant valuations that are invariant with respect to a compact subgroup operating transitively on the…
We introduce a canonical structure of a commutative associative filtered algebra with the unit on polynomial smooth valuations, and study its properties. The induced structure on the subalgebra of translation invariant smooth valuations has especially nice properties (it is the structure of the Frobenius algebra). We also present some applications.
This article is the third part of the series of articles where the theory of valuations on manifolds is constructed. In math.MG/0503399 the notion of a smooth valuation on a manifold was introduced. The goal of this article is to put a canonical multiplicative structure on the space of smooth valuations on general manifolds, thus extending some of the affine constructions from math.MG/0301148, math.MG/0503397.
Recently an algebra of smooth valuations was attached to any smooth manifold. Roughly put, a smooth valuation is finitely additive measure on compact submanifolds with corners which satisfies some extra properties. In this note we initiate a study of modules over smooth valuations. More specifically we study finitely generated projective modules in analogy to the study of vector bundles on a manifold. In particular it is shown that on a compact manifold there exists a canonical isomorphism between the $K$-ring constructed out of finitely generated projective modules over valuations and the cla…
The product of smooth valuations on manifolds is described in terms of differential forms, Gelfand transforms and blow-up spaces. It is shown that the product extends partially to generalized valuations and corresponds geometrically to transversal intersections. This result is used to prove a general kinematic formula on compact rank one symmetric spaces.
A new integral representation of smooth translation invariant and rotation equivariant even Minkowski valuations is established. Explicit formulas relating previously obtained descriptions of such valuations with the new more accessible one are also derived. Moreover, the action of Alesker's Hard Lefschetz operators on these Minkowski valuations is explored in detail.
An overview of some of the recent developments in the theory of valuations on convex sets and its generalizations to manifolds is given. The exposition is focused towards applications to integral geometry; several of such applications are discussed.
In this paper, we endow the space of continuous translation invariant valuation on convex sets generated by mixed volumes coupled with a suitable Radon measure on tuples of convex bodies with two appropriate norms. This enables us to construct a continuous extension of the convolution operator on smooth valuations to non-smooth valuations, which are in the completion of the spaces of valuations with respect to these norms. The novelty of our approach lies in the fact that our proof does not rely on the general theory of wave fronts, but on geometric inequalities deduced from optimal transport …
Generalizing Weyl's tube formula and building on Chern's work, Alesker reinterpreted the Lipschitz-Killing curvature integrals as a family of valuations (finitely-additive measures with good analytic properties), attached canonically to any Riemannian manifold, which is universal with respect to isometric embeddings. In this note, we uncover a similar structure for contact manifolds. Namely, we show that a contact manifold admits a canonical family of generalized valuations, which are universal under contact embeddings. Those valuations assign numerical invariants to even-dimensional submanifo…
New proofs of the Hadwiger theorem for smooth and for continuous valuations on convex functions are obtained, and the Klain-Schneider theorem on convex functions is established. In addition, an extension theorem for valuations defined on functions with lower dimensional domains is proved, and its connection to the Abel transform is explained.
Any Riemannian manifold has a canonical collection of valuations (finitely additive measures) attached to it, known as the intrinsic volumes or Lipschitz-Killing valuations. They date back to the remarkable discovery of H. Weyl that the coefficients of the tube volume polynomial are intrinsic invariants of the metric. As a consequence, the intrinsic volumes behave naturally under isometric immersions. This phenomenon, subsequently observed in a number of different geometric settings, is commonly referred to as the Weyl principle. In general normed spaces, the Holmes-Thompson intrinsic volumes …
We give new examples of closed smooth 4-manifolds which support singular metrics of nonpositive curvature, but no smooth ones, thereby answering affirmatively a question of Gromov. The obstruction comes from patterns of incompressible 2-tori sufficiently complicated to force branching of geodesics for nonpositively curved metrics.
Using tools and results from geometric measure theory, we give a simple new proof of the main result (Theorem 1.3) in K. Kondo and M. Tanaka, Approximation of Lipschitz Maps via Immersions and Differentiable Exotic Sphere Theorems, \textit{Nonlinear Anal.} \textbf{155} (2017), 219--249, as well as the converse statement. It explores the connections between the theory of non-smooth analysis {\it à la} F.~H. Clarke and the existence of special systems of Whitney flat $1$-forms with Sobolev regularity on certain families of homology manifolds.
