One constructs new operations of pull-back and push-forward on valuations on manifolds with respect to submersions and immersions. A general Radon type transform on valuations is introduced using these operations and the product on valuations. It is shown that the classical Radon transform on smooth functions, and the well known Radon transform on constructible functions with respect to the Euler characteristic are special cases of this new Radon transform. An inversion formula for the Radon transform on valuations has been proven in a specific case of real projective spaces. Relations of these operations to yet another classical type of integral geometry, Crofton and kinematic formulas, are indicated.
This article is the second part in the series of articles where we are developing theory of valuations on manifolds. Roughly speaking valuations could be thought as finitely additive measures on a class of nice subsets of a manifold which satisfy some additional assumptions. The goal of this article is to introduce a notion of a smooth valuation on an arbitrary smooth manifold and establish some of the basic properties of it.
This is the first part of a series of articles where we are going to develop theory of valuations on manifolds generalizing the classical theory of continuous valuations on convex subsets of a linear space. In this article we still work only with linear spaces. We introduce a space of smooth (non-translation invariant) valuations on a finite dimensional linear space. We present three descriptions of this space. We describe the canonical multiplicative structure on it generalizing the results for polynomial valuations obtained by the author in Geom. Funct. Anal. 14 (2004).
This is the fourth part in the series of articles math.MG/0503397, math.MG/0503399, math.MG/0509512 where the theory of valuations on manifolds is developed. In this part it is shown that the filtration on valuations introduced in math.MG/0503399 is compatible with the product. Then it is proved that the Euler-Verdier involution on smooth valuations introduced in math.MG/0503399 is an automorphism of the algebra of valuations. Then an integration functional on valuations with compact support is introduced, and a property of selfduality of valuations is proved. Next a space of generalized valua…
This is a non-technical survey of a recent theory of valuations on manifolds constructed in math.MG/0503397, math.MG/0503399, math.MG/0509512, math.MG/0511171 and actually a guide to this series of articles. We review also some recent related results obtained by a number of people. We formulate some open questions.
We obtain new general results on the structure of the space of translation invariant continuous valuations on convex sets (a version of the hard Lefschetz theorem). Using these and our previous results we obtain explicit characterization of unitarily invariant translation invariant continuous valuations. It implies new integral geometric formulas for real submanifolds in Hermitian spaces generalizing the classical kinematic formulas in Euclidean spaces due to Poincaré, Chern, Santaló, and others.
We study the properties of the multiplicative structure on valuations on convex sets. We prove a new version of the hard Lefschetz theorem for even translation invariant continuous valuations, and discuss related problems of integral geometry. Then we formulate a conjectural analogue of this result for odd valuations.
This article is the third part of the series of articles where the theory of valuations on manifolds is constructed. In math.MG/0503399 the notion of a smooth valuation on a manifold was introduced. The goal of this article is to put a canonical multiplicative structure on the space of smooth valuations on general manifolds, thus extending some of the affine constructions from math.MG/0301148, math.MG/0503397.
Recently an algebra of smooth valuations was attached to any smooth manifold. Roughly put, a smooth valuation is finitely additive measure on compact submanifolds with corners which satisfies some extra properties. In this note we initiate a study of modules over smooth valuations. More specifically we study finitely generated projective modules in analogy to the study of vector bundles on a manifold. In particular it is shown that on a compact manifold there exists a canonical isomorphism between the $K$-ring constructed out of finitely generated projective modules over valuations and the cla…
We consider the space of convex functions defined in the Euclidean $n$-dimensional space, which are lower semi-continuous and tend to infinity at infinity. We study real-valued valuations defined on this space of functions, which are invariant under the composition with rigid motions, monotone and verify a certain type of continuity. Among these valuations we prove integral representation formulas for those which are, additionally, simple or homogeneous.
The algebras of valuations on $S^6$ and $S^7$ invariant under the actions of $\mathrm G_2$ and $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$ are shown to be isomorphic to the algebra of translation-invariant valuations on the tangent space at a point invariant under the action of the isotropy group. This is in analogy with the cases of real and complex space forms, suggesting the possibility that the same phenomenon holds in all Riemannian isotropic spaces. Based on the description of the algebras the full array of kinematic formulas for invariant valuations and curvature measures in $S^6$ and $S^7$ is computed. A key t…
A new integral representation of smooth translation invariant and rotation equivariant even Minkowski valuations is established. Explicit formulas relating previously obtained descriptions of such valuations with the new more accessible one are also derived. Moreover, the action of Alesker's Hard Lefschetz operators on these Minkowski valuations is explored in detail.
We provide an integral representation for continuous, rotation invariant and dot product invariant valuations defined on the space Lip$(S^{n-1})$ of Lipschitz continuous functions on the unit $n-$sphere.
We provide a general framework for the study of valuations on Banach lattices. This complements and expands several recent works about valuations on function spaces, including $L_p(μ)$, Orlicz spaces and spaces $C(K)$ of continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space. In particular, we study decomposition properties, boundedness and integral representation of continuous valuations.
We describe explicitly the algebra of Spin(9)-invariant, translation-invariant, continuous valuations on the octonionic plane. Namely, we present a basis in terms of invariant differential forms and determine the Bernig-Fu convolution on this space. The main technical ingredient we introduce is an extension of the invariant theory of the Lie group Spin(7) to the isotropy representation of the action of Spin(9) on the 15-dimensional sphere, reflecting the underlying octonionic structure. As an application, we compute the principal kinematic formula on the octonionic plane and express in our bas…
The space of constructible functions form a dense subspace of the space of generalized valuations. In this note we prove a somewhat stronger property that the sequential closure, taken sufficiently many (in fact, infinitely many) times, of the former space is equal to the latter one. This stronger property is necessary for some applications in the theory of valuations on manifolds.
We study real-valued valuations on the space of Lipschitz functions over the Euclidean unit sphere $S^{n-1}$. After introducing an appropriate notion of convergence, we show that continuous valuations are bounded on sets which are bounded with respect to the Lipschitz norm. This fact, in combination with measure theoretical arguments, will yield an integral representation for continuous and rotation invariant valuations on the space of Lipschitz functions over the 1-dimensional sphere.
Generalizing Weyl's tube formula and building on Chern's work, Alesker reinterpreted the Lipschitz-Killing curvature integrals as a family of valuations (finitely-additive measures with good analytic properties), attached canonically to any Riemannian manifold, which is universal with respect to isometric embeddings. In this note, we uncover a similar structure for contact manifolds. Namely, we show that a contact manifold admits a canonical family of generalized valuations, which are universal under contact embeddings. Those valuations assign numerical invariants to even-dimensional submanifo…
The product of smooth valuations on manifolds is described in terms of differential forms, Gelfand transforms and blow-up spaces. It is shown that the product extends partially to generalized valuations and corresponds geometrically to transversal intersections. This result is used to prove a general kinematic formula on compact rank one symmetric spaces.
Any Riemannian manifold has a canonical collection of valuations (finitely additive measures) attached to it, known as the intrinsic volumes or Lipschitz-Killing valuations. They date back to the remarkable discovery of H. Weyl that the coefficients of the tube volume polynomial are intrinsic invariants of the metric. As a consequence, the intrinsic volumes behave naturally under isometric immersions. This phenomenon, subsequently observed in a number of different geometric settings, is commonly referred to as the Weyl principle. In general normed spaces, the Holmes-Thompson intrinsic volumes …
