The main theorem of Galois theory states that there are no finite group-subgroup pairs with the same invariants. On the other hand, if we consider complex linear reductive groups instead of finite groups, the analogous statement is no longer true: There exist counterexample group-subgroup pairs with the same invariants. However, it's possible to classify all these counterexamples for certain types of groups. In [16], we provided the classification for connected complex irreducible groups, and, in this paper, for connected complex orthogonal groups, i.e., groups that preserve some non-degenerate quadratic form.
Applying the embedding of $A_{n-1}$ in $B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$ we construct a new supercharacter theory for the Sylow subgroups in orthogonal and symplectic groups over a finite field. The constructed supercharacter appears to be a little bit more precise than the previously known one.
We construct two supercharacter theories (in the sense of P. Diaconis and I.M. Isaacs) for the parabolic subgroups in orthogonal and symplectic groups. For each supercharacter theory, we obtain a supercharacter analog of the A.A.Kirillov formula for irreducible characters of finite unipotent groups.
Let $n\geq 3,$ and let $Y$ be a simply connected, simple algebraic group of type $D_{n+1}$ over an algebraically closed field $K.$ Also let $X$ be the subgroup of type $B_n$ of $Y,$ embedded in the usual way. In this paper, we correct an error in a proof of a theorem of Seitz, resulting in the discovery of a new family of triples $(X,Y,V),$ where $V$ denotes a finite-dimensional, irreducible, rational $KY$-module, on which $X$ acts irreducibly. We go on to investigate the impact of the existence of the new examples on the classification of the maximal closed connected subgroups of the classica…
With an arbitrary finite graph having a special form of 2-intervals (a diamond-shaped graph) we associate a subgroup of a symmetric group and a representation of this subgroup; state a series of problems on such groups and their representations; and present results of some computer simulations. The case we are most interested in is that of the Young graph and subgroups generated by natural involutions of Young tableaux. In particular, the classical Young's orthogonal form can be regarded as a deformation of our construction. We also state asymptotic problems for infinite groups.
Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group and let $\g =\n_- +\hh +\n$ be a triangular decomposition of $\g= \hbox{Lie}\,G$. Let $\b =\hh +\n$ and let $H,N,B$ be Lie subgroups of $G$ corresponding respectively to $\hh,\n$ and $\b$. We may identify $\n_-$ with the dual space to $\n$. The coadjoint action of $N$ on $\n_-$ extends to an action of $B$ on $\n_-$. There exists a unique nonempty Zariski open orbit $X$ of $B$ on $\n_-$. Any $N$-orbit in $X$ is a maximal coadjoint orbit of $N$ in $\n_-$. The cascade of orthogonal roots defines a cross-section $\r_-^{\times}$ of the set of such orbits leading to…
Let G be the split special orthogonal group of degree 2n+1 over a field F of char F \ne 2. Then we describe G-orbits on the triple flag varieties G/P\times G/P\times G/P and G/P\times G/P\times G/B with respect to the diagonal action of G where P is a maximal parabolic subgroup of G of the shape (n,1,n) and B is a Borel subgroup. As by-products, we also describe GL_n-orbits on G/B, Q_{2n}-orbits on the full flag variety of GL_{2n} where Q_{2n} is the fixed-point subgroup in Sp_{2n} of a nonzero vector in F^{2n} and 1\times Sp_{2n}-orbits on the full flag variety of GL_{2n+1}. In the same way, …
We define and study supercharacters of the classical finite unipotent groups of symplectic and orthogonal types (over any finite field of odd characteristic). We show how supercharacters for groups of those types can be obtained by restricting the supercharacter theory of the finite unitriangular group, and prove that supercharacters are orthogonal and provide a partition of the set of all irreducible characters. We also describe all irreducible characters of maximum degree in terms of the root system, and show how they can be obtained as constituents of particular supercharacters.
Given a finite group $G$, its double Burnside ring $B(G,G)$, has a natural duality operation that arises from considering opposite $(G,G)$-bisets. In this article, we systematically study the subgroup of units of $B(G,G)$, where elements are inverse to their dual, so called orthogonal units. We show the existence of an inflation map that embeds the group of orthogonal units of $B(G/N,G/N)$ into the group of orthogonal units of $B(G,G)$, when $N$ is a normal subgroup of $G$, and study some properties and consequences. In particular, we use these maps to determine the orthogonal units of $B(G,G)…
The paper is devoted to the problem of finding free generators in the fields of invariants for actions of unipotent groups on affine varieties. We consider the case when the unipotent group is the unipotent radical in an arbitrary parabolic subgroup in the reductive group of classical type GL(n), SL(n), O(n) or Sp(2n). In the explicit form, we present a system of free generators in the field of invariants for the action of the unipotent radical on the reductive group by conjugation.
We define the superclasses for a classical finite unipotent group $U$ of type $B_{n}(q)$, $C_{n}(q)$, or $D_{n}(q)$, and show that, together with the supercharacters defined in a previous paper, they form a supercharacter theory. In particular, we prove that the supercharacters take a constant value on each superclass, and evaluate this value. As a consequence, we obtain a factorization of any superclass as a product of elementary superclasses. In addition, we also define the space of superclass functions, and prove that it is spanned by the supercharacters. As as consequence, we (re)obtain th…
For all prime powers q we restrict the unipotent characters of the special orthogonal groups SO_5(q) and SO_7(q) to a maximal parabolic subgroup. We determine all irreducible constituents of these restrictions for SO_5(q) and a large part of the irreducible constituents for SO_7(q).
Let G be a semisimple complex Lie group. In this article, we study Geometric Invariant Theory on a flag variety G/B with respect to the action of a principal 3-dimensional simple subgroup S of G. We determine explicitly the GIT-equivalence classes of S-ample line bundles on G/B. We show that, under mild assumptions, among the GIT-classes there are chambers, in the sense of Dolgachev-Hu. The Hilbert quotients Y=X//S with respect to various chambers form a family of Mori dream spaces, canonically associated with G. We are able to determine three important cones in the Picard group of any of thes…
In this note, I will prove a conjecture in \cite{BYY}, which is related to the invariants of a maximal parabolic subgroup of $\GL_{n+1}$. Consequently, the natural tensor invariants of this typical maximal parabolic subgroup of $\GL_{n+1}$ are determined when $n\geq r$.
In this paper, we determine the modular invariants of finite modular pseudo-reflection subgroups of the finite general linear group $ \text{GL}_n(q) $ acting on the tensor product of the symmetric algebra $ S^{\bullet}(V) $ and the exterior algebra $ \wedge^{\bullet}(V) $ of the natural $ \text{GL}_n(q) $-module $ V $. We are particularly interested in the case where $ G $ is a subgroup of the parabolic subgroups of $ \text{GL}_n(q) $ which is a generalization of Weyl group of Cartan type Lie algebra.
Let F be a local field of character zero. Let E be a quadratic field extension of F. We show that any P-invariant linear functional on a GL(n,E)-distinguished irreducible smooth admissible representation of GL(2n,F) is also GL(n,E)-invariant where P is a mirabolic subgroup of GL(n,E).
The algebra of invariants of d-tuples of n x n skew-symmetric matrices under the action of the orthogonal group by simultaneous conjugation is considered over an infinite field of characteristic different from two. For n=3 and d>0 a minimal set of generators is established. A homogeneous system of parameters (i.e., an algebraically independent set such that the algebra of invariants is a finitely generated free module over subalgebra generated by this set) is described for n=3 and d>0, for n=4 and d=2,3, for n=5 and d=2.
The paper investigates a significant part of the automorphic, in fact of the so-called Eisenstein cohomology of split odd orthogonal groups over Q. The main result provides a description of residual and regular Eisenstein cohomology classes for maximal parabolic Q-subgroups in case of generic cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations of their Levi subgroups. That is, such identifying necessary conditions on these latter representations as well as on the complex parameters in order for the associated Eisenstein series to possibly yield non-trivial classes in the automorphic cohomology.
We present a method to calculate intertwining operators between the underlying Harish-Chandra modules of degenerate principal series representations of a semisimple Lie group $G$ and a semisimple subgroup $G'$, and between their composition factors. Our method describes the restriction of these operators to the $K'$-isotypic components, $K'\subseteq G'$ a maximal compact subgroup, and reduces the representation theoretic problem to an infinite system of scalar equations of a combinatorial nature. For rank one orthogonal and unitary groups and spherical principal series representations we calcu…
Let $G=SO(8n+4,\mathbb{C})$ ($n\ge 1$). Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $P (\supset B)$ denote the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ corresponding to the simple root $α_{4n+2}$. In this article, we prove projective normality of the GIT quotients of certain Schubert varieties in the orthogonal Grassmannian $G/P$ with respect to the descent of a suitable $T$-linearized very ample line bundle.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field ${\bf k}$ of characteristic not equal to 2, let $\B$ be the variety of all Borel subgroups of $G$, and let $K$ be a symmetric subgroup of $G$. Fixing a closed $K$-orbit in $\B$, we associate to every $K$-orbit on $\B$ some subsets of the Weyl group of $G$, and we study them as invariants of the $K$-orbits. When ${\bf k} = {\mathbb C}$, these invariants are used to determine when an orbit of a real form of $G$ and an orbit of a Borel subgroup of $G$ have non-empty intersection in $\B$. We also characterize the i…
The theorems of M. Ratner, describing the finite ergodic invariant measures and the orbit closures for unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups, are extended for actions of subgroups generated by unipotent elements. More precisely: Let G be a Lie group (not necessarily connected) and Gamma a closed subgroup of G. Let W be a subgroup of G such that Ad(W) is contained in the Zariski closure (in the group of automorphisms of the Lie algebra of G) of the subgroup generated by the unipotent elements of Ad(W). Then any finite ergodic invariant measure for the action of W on G/Gamma is a h…
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p\geqslant 0$, let $H$ be a proper closed subgroup of $G$ and let $V$ be a nontrivial irreducible $KG$-module, which is $p$-restricted, tensor indecomposable and rational. Assume that the restriction of $V$ to $H$ is irreducible. In this paper, we study the triples $(G,H,V)$ of this form when $G$ is a classical group and $H$ is positive-dimensional. Combined with earlier work of Dynkin, Seitz, Testerman and others, our main theorem reduces the problem of classifying the triples $(G,H,V)$ to the case w…
The spaces of invariants and the zonal spherical functions associated with quantum super 2-shpheres defined by $\Bbb{C}_{q}(osp(1,2))$ are discussed. Connection between the zonal spherical functions and orthogonal $q$-polynomials from the Askey-Wilson scheme is investigated.
A subgroup H of an algebraic group G is said to be strongly solvable if H is contained in a Borel subgroup of G. This paper is devoted to establishing relationships between the following three combinatorial classifications of strongly solvable spherical subgroups in reductive complex algebraic groups: Luna's general classification of arbitrary spherical subgroups restricted to the strongly solvable case, Luna's 1993 classification of strongly solvable wonderful subgroups, and the author's 2011 classification of strongly solvable spherical subgroups. We give a detailed presentation of all the t…
Let $G$ be a higher rank semisimple linear algebraic group over a non-Archimedean local field. The simplicial complexes corresponding to any sequence of pairwise non-conjugate irreducible lattices in $G$ are Benjamini-Schramm convergent to the Bruhat-Tits building. Convergence of the relative Plancherel measures and normalized Betti numbers follows. This extends the work of Abert, Bergeron, Biringer, Gelander, Nokolov, Raimbault and Samet from real Lie groups to linear groups over arbitrary local fields. Along the way, various results concerning Invariant Random Subgroups and in particular a v…
Given a connected simply connected semisimple group G and a connected spherical subgroup K we determine the generators of the extended weight monoid of G/K, based on the homogeneous spherical datum of G/K. Let H be a reductive subgroup of G and let P be a parabolic subgroup of H for which G/P is spherical. A triple (G,H,P) with this property is called multiplicity free system and we determine the generators of the extended weight monoid of G/P explicitly in the cases where (G,H) is strictly indecomposable. The extended weight monoid of G/P describes the induction from H to G of an irreducible …
Let K be the product O(n_1) x O(n_2) x ... x O(n_r) of orthogonal groups. Let V the r-fold tensor product of defining representations of each orthogonal factor. We compute a stable formula for the dimension of the K-invariant algebra of degree d homogeneous polynomial functions on V. To accomplish this, we compute a formula for the number of matchings which commute with a fixed permutation. Finally, we provide formulas for the invariants and describe a bijection between a basis for the space of invariants and the isomorphism classes of certain r-regular graphs on d vertices, as well as a metho…
The orthogonal group acts on the space of several $n\times n$ matrices by simultaneous conjugation. For an infinite field of characteristic different from two, relations between generators for the algebra of invariants are described. As an application, the maximal degree of elements of a minimal system of generators is described with deviation $3$. This note contains concise but precise description of the results. All proofs can be found in arXiv: 0902.4266 and arXiv: 1011.5201.
