This paper investigates ways to enlarge the Hamiltonian subgroup Ham of the symplectomorphism group Symp(M) of the symplectic manifold (M, ω) to a group that both intersects every connected component of Symp(M) and characterizes symplectic bundles with fiber M and closed connection form. As a consequence, it is shown that bundles with closed connection form are stable under appropriate small perturbations of the symplectic form. Further, the manifold (M,ω) has the property that every symplectic M-bundle has a closed connection form if and only if the flux group vanishes and the flux homomorphism extends to a crossed homomorphism defined on the whole group Symp(M). The latter condition is equivalent to saying that a connected component of the commutator subgroup [Symp,Symp] intersects the identity component of Symp only if it also intersects Ham. It is not yet clear when this condition is satisfied.
We show that if the symplectic form vanishes on 2-tori the flux homomorphism extends to the subgroup of Symp acting trivially on π_1(M). We also give an explicit formula for the Kotschick--Morita extension of Flux in the monotone case. The results in this paper belong to the realm of soft symplectic topology, but raise some questions that may need hard methods to answer.
We deform the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms into the group of Hamiltonian automorphisms of a formal star product on a symplectic manifold. We study the geometry of that group and deform the Flux morphism in the framework of deformation quantization.
We give a complete characterization of Hamiltonian actions of compact Lie groups on exact symplectic manifolds with proper momentum maps. We deduce that every Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group on a contractible symplectic manifold with a proper momentum map is globally linearizable.
Like (co)homology group theory of formal Hamiltonian vector fields on symplectic vector spaces, we try studying homology group theory on symplecit tori introducing the notion of weight.
In this paper, we construct infinitely many bi-invariant metrics on the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group and study their basic properties and corresponding generalizations of the Hofer inequality and Sikorav one.
Using Crystal basis theory, we study the relative Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks cohomology groups of the formal Hamiltonian vector fields on 6-dimensional plane with weight =2,4,6.
On any closed symplectic manifold we construct a path-connected neighborhood of the identity in the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group with the property that each Hamiltonian diffeomorphism in this neighborhood admits a Hofer and spectral length minimizing path to the identity. This neighborhood is open in the $C^1-$topology. The construction utilizes a continuation argument and chain level result in the Floer theory of Lagrangian intersections.
This note describes some recent results about the homotopy properties of Hamiltonian loops in various manifolds, including toric manifolds and one point blow ups. We describe conditions under which a circle action does not contract in the Hamiltonian group, and construct an example of a loop $\ga$ of diffeomorphisms of a symplectic manifold M with the property that none of the loops smoothly isotopic to $\ga$ preserve any symplectic form on M. We also discuss some new conditions under which the Hamiltonian group has infinite Hofer diameter. Some of the methods used are classical (Weinstein's a…
This paper develops the pre-quantization of Lie group-valued moment maps, and establishes its equivalence with the pre-quantization of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian loop group spaces.
Given a Hamiltonian action of a proper symplectic groupoid (for instance, a Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group), we show that the transverse momentum map admits a natural constant rank stratification. To this end, we construct a refinement of the canonical stratification associated to the Lie groupoid action (the orbit type stratification, in the case of a Hamiltonian Lie group action) that seems not to have appeared before, even in the literature on Hamiltonian Lie group actions. This refinement turns out to be compatible with the Poisson geometry of the Hamiltonian action: it is a Poi…
We construct the vortex Floer homology group $VHF (M,μ;H)$ for an aspherical Hamiltonian $G$-manifold $(M, ω)$ with moment map $μ$ and a class of $G$-invariant Hamiltonian loop $H_t$, following the proposal of [3]. This is a substitute for the ordinary Hamiltonian Floer homology of the symplectic quotient of $M$. We achieve the transversality of the moduli space by the classical perturbation argument instead of the virtual technique, so the homology can be defined over ${\mathbb Z}$ or ${\mathbb Z}_2$.
In this paper we first apply the chain level Floer theory to the study of Hofer's geometry of Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group in the cases without quantum contribution: we prove that any quasi-autonomous Hamiltonian path on weakly exact symplectic manifolds or any autonomous Hamiltonian path on arbitrary symplectic manifolds is length minimizing in its homotopy class with fixed ends, as long as it has a fixed maximum and a fixed minimum which are not over-twisted and all of its contractible periodic orbits of period less than one are sufficiently $C^1$-small. Next we give a construction of ne…
The group Hameo (M,ω) of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms of a connected symplectic manifold (M,ω) was defined and studied in [7] and further in [6]. In these papers, the authors consistently used the L^{(1,\infty)}-Hofer norm (and not the L^\infty-Hofer norm) on the space of Hamiltonian paths (see below for the definitions). A justification for this choice was given in [7]. In this article we study the L^\infty-case. In view of the fact that the Hofer norm on the group Ham (M,ω) of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms does not depend on the choice of the L^{(1,\infty)}-norm vs. the L^\infty-norm [9], Y.-G. …
Stefan M$\ddot{\mathrm{u}}$ller posed the problem "Do Hofer's metrics on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphism and the one of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms (Hameomorphisms) correspond?". Let $(M,ω)$ be a compact exact symplectic manifold. We prove that the group of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms is not a simple group if the positive answer of M$\ddot{\mathrm{u}}$ller's question holds . To prove this results, we introduce fragmented Hofer's norms on a normal subgroup of the group of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms.
In an earlier article we introduced a new definition for the `quantization' of a Hamiltonian loop group space $\mathcal{M}$, involving the equivariant $L^2$-index of a Dirac-type operator $\mathscr{D}$ on a non-compact finite dimensional submanifold $\mathcal{Y}$ of $\mathcal{M}$. In this article we study a Witten-type deformation of this operator, similar to the work of Tian-Zhang and Ma-Zhang. We obtain a formula for the index with infinitely many non-trivial contributions, indexed by the components of the critical set of the norm-square of the moment map. This is the main part of a new proo…
In this paper we define invariants of Hamiltonian group actions for central regular values of the moment map. The key hypotheses are that the moment map is proper and that the ambient manifold is symplectically aspherical. The invariants are based on the symplectic vortex equations. Applications include an existence theorem for relative periodic orbits, a computation for circle actions on a complex vector space, and a theorem about the relation between the invariants introduced here and the Seiberg--Witten invariants of a product of a Riemann surface with a two-sphere.
We lift a Hamiltonian loop on a symplectic manifold to a Hamiltonian loop on the symplectic one-point blow up of a symplectic manifold. Then we use Weinstein's morphism to show that the lifted Hamiltonian loop has infinite order on the fundamental group of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the blown up manifold.
The purpose of this paper is presenting a theoretical basis for the study of $ω$-Hamiltonian vector fields in a more general approach than the classical one. We introduce the concepts of $ω$-symplectic group and $ω$-semisymplectic group, and describe some of their properties. We show that the Lie algebra of such groups is a useful tool in the recognition of an $ω$-Hamiltonian vector field defined on a symplectic vector space $(V,ω)$ with respect to coordinates that are not necessarily symplectic.
We develop differential and symplectic geometry of differentiable Deligne-Mumford stacks (orbifolds) including Hamiltonian group actions and symplectic reduction. As an application we construct new examples of symplectic toric DM stacks as symplectic quotients of C^NxBG, where G is a finite non-abelian group.
We outline the construction of invariants of Hamiltonian group actions on symplectic manifolds. These invariants can be viewed as an equivariant version of Gromov-Witten invariants. They are derived from solutions of a PDE involving the Cauchy-Riemann operator, the curvature of a connection, and the moment map.
Let $(M, ω)$ be a connected compact symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian SU(2) or SO(3) action. We prove that, as fundamental group of topological spaces, $π_1(M)=π_1(M_{red})$, where $M_{red}$ is the symplectic quotient at any value of the moment map $ϕ$.
Let $Σ_g$ be a closed hyperbolic surface of genus $g$ and let $Ham(Σ_g)$ be the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $Σ_g$. The most natural word metric on this group is the autonomous metric. It has many interesting properties, most important of which is the bi-invariance of this metric. In this work we show that $Ham(Σ_g)$ is unbounded with respect to this metric.
We prove that the autonomous norm on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the two-dimensional torus is unbounded. We provide explicit examples of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms with arbitrarily large autonomous norm. For the proofs we construct quasimorphisms on $Ham(T^2)$ and some of them are Calabi.
Let G be a compact Lie group and LG its associated loop group. The main result of this manuscript is a surjectivity theorem from the equivariant K-theory of a Hamiltonian LG-space onto the integral K-theory of its Hamiltonian LG-quotient. Our result is a K-theoretic analogue of previous work in rational Borel-equivariant cohomology of Bott, Tolman, and Weitsman. Our proof techniques differ from that of Bott, Tolman, and Weitsman in that they explicitly use the Borel construction, which we do not have at our disposal in equivariant K-theory; we instead directly construct G-equivariant homotopy …
We describe the structure of the Lie groups endowed with a left-invariant symplectic form, called symplectic Lie groups, in terms of semi-direct products of Lie groups, symplectic reduction and principal bundles with affine fiber. This description is particularly nice if the group is Hamiltonian, that is, if the left canonical action of the group on itself is Hamiltonian. The principal tool used for our description is a canonical affine structure associated with the symplectic form. We also characterize the Hamiltonian symplectic Lie groups among the connected symplectic Lie groups. We special…
Let $(M, ω)$ be a connected, compact symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian $G$ action, where $G$ is a connected compact Lie group. Let $ϕ$ be the moment map. In \cite{L}, we proved the following result for $G=S^1$ action: as fundamental groups of topological spaces, $π_1(M)=π_1(M_{red})$, where $M_{red}$ is the symplectic quotient at any value of the moment map $ϕ$. In this paper, we generalize this result to other connected compact Lie group $G$ actions. We also prove that the above fundamental group is isomorphic to that of $M/G$. We briefly discuss the generalization of the first …
Let M be a closed symplectic manifold, and let | | be a norm on the space of all smooth functions on M, which are zero-mean normalized with respect to the canonical volume form. We show that if | | is dominated from above by the L-Infinity-norm, and | | is invariant under the action of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, then it is also invariant under all volume preserving diffeomorphisms. We also prove that if | | is, additionally, not equivalent to the L-Infinity-norm, then the induced Finsler metric on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on M vanishes identically.
Let $(M,ω)$ be a closed symplectic manifold and $\textup{Ham}(M,ω)$ the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $(M,ω)$. Then the Seidel homomorphism is a map from the fundamental group of $\textup{Ham}(M,ω)$ to the quantum homology ring $QH_*(M;Λ)$. Using this homomorphism we give a sufficient condition for when a nontrivial loop $ψ$ in $\textup{Ham}(M,ω)$ determines a nontrivial loop $ψ\times\textup{id}_N$ in $\textup{Ham}(M\times N,ω\oplusη)$, where $(N,η)$ is a closed symplectic manifold such that $π_2(N)=0$.
Suppose that a compact and connected Lie group $G$ acts on a complex Hodge manifold $M$ in a holomorphic and Hamiltonian manner, and that the action linearizes to a positive holomorphic line bundle $A$ on $M$. Then there is an induced unitary representation on the associated Hardy space and, if the moment map of the action is nowhere vanishing, the corresponding isotypical components are all finite dimensional. We study the asymptotic concentration behavior of the corresponding equivariant Szegö kernels near certain loci defined by the moment map.
In this paper, we study the dynamical aspects of the \emph{Hamiltonian homeomorphism group} $Hameo(M,ω)$ which was introduced by Müller and the author. We introduce the notion of autonomous continuous Hamiltonian flows and extend the well-known conservation of energy to such flows. The definitions of the Hofer length and of the spectral invariants $ρ_a$ are extended to continuous Hamiltonian paths, and the Hofer norm and the spectral norm $γ:Ham(M,ω) \to \R_+$ are generalized to the corresponding intrinsic norms on $Hameo(M,ω)$ respectively. Using these extensions, we also extend the construct…
Given a symplectic surface $(Σ, ω)$ of genus $g \ge 4$, we show that the free group with two generators embeds into every asymptotic cone of $(\mathrm{Ham}(Σ, ω), d_\mathrm{H})$, where $d_\mathrm{H}$ is the Hofer metric. The result stabilizes to products with symplectically aspherical manifolds.
We prove that the group of Hamiltonian automorphisms of a symplectic 4-manifold contains only finitely many conjugacy classes of maximal compact tori with respect to the action of the full symplectomorphism group. We also extend to rational and ruled manifolds a result of Kedra which asserts that, if $M$ is a simply connected symplectic 4-manifold with $b_{2}\geq 3$, and if $\widetilde{M}_δ$ denotes a blow-up of $M$ of small enough capacity $δ$, then the rational cohomology algebra of the Hamiltonian group of $\widetilde{M}_δ)$ is not finitely generated. Both results are based on the fact that…
In this article we prove that for a smooth fiberwise convex Hamiltonian, the asymptotic Hofer distance from the identity gives a strict upper bound to the value at 0 of Mather's $β$ function, thus providing a negative answer to a question asked by K. Siburg in \cite{Siburg1998}. However, we show that equality holds if one considers the asymptotic distance defined in \cite{Viterbo1992}.
We prove a Fredholm property for spin-c Dirac operators $\mathsf{D}$ on non-compact manifolds satisfying a certain condition with respect to the action of a semi-direct product group $K\ltimes Γ$, with $K$ compact and $Γ$ discrete. We apply this result to an example coming from the theory of Hamiltonian loop group spaces. In this context we prove that a certain index pairing $[\mathcal{X}] \cap [\mathsf{D}]$ yields an element of the formal completion $R^{-\infty}(T)$ of the representation ring of a maximal torus $T \subset G$; the resulting element has an additional antisymmetry property under…
We prove that the fundamental group of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the symplectic manifold that is obtain by blowing up a submanifold contains an element of infinite order. We prove this using Weinstein's morphism and by constructing explicitly such loop of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms.
We construct an embedding $Φ$ of $[0,1]^{\infty}$ into $Ham(M, ω)$, the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a suitable closed symplectic manifold $(M, ω)$. We then prove that $Φ$ is in fact a quasi-isometry. After imposing further assumptions on $(M, ω)$, we adapt our methods to construct a similar embedding of $\mathbb{R} \oplus [0,1]^{\infty}$ into either $Ham(M, ω)$ or $\widetilde{Ham}(M, ω)$, the universal cover of $Ham(M, ω)$. Along the way, we prove results related to the filtered Floer chain complexes of radially symmetric Hamiltonians. Our proofs rely heavily on a continuity result…
The main purpose of this paper is to carry out some of the foundational study of $C^0$-Hamiltonian geometry and $C^0$-symplectic topology. We introduce the notions of the strong and the weak {\it Hamiltonian topology} on the space of Hamiltonian paths, and on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. We then define the {\it group} $Hameo(M,ω)$ and the space $Hameo^w(M,ω)$ of {\it Hamiltonian homeomorphisms} such that $$ Ham(M,ω) \subsetneq Hameo(M,ω) \subset Hameo^w(M,ω) \subset Sympeo(M,ω) $$ where $Sympeo(M,ω)$ is the group of symplectic homeomorphisms. We prove that $Hameo(M,ω)$ is a {\it n…
We provide an alternative method for obtaining of compatible Poisson structures on Lie groups by means of the adjoint representations of Lie algebras. In this way, we calculate some compatible Poisson structures on four dimensional and nilpotent six dimensional symplectic real Lie groups. Then using Magri-Morosi's theorem we obtain new bi-Hamiltonian systems with four dimensional and nilpotent six dimensional symplectic real Lie groups as phase spaces.
In this paper, we investigate the relative Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks cohomology groups of the formal Hamiltonian vector fields on R^4. In the case of formal Hamiltonian vector fields on R^2, we computed the relative Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks cohomology groups of weight <20 in the paper by Mikami-Nakae-Kodama. The main strategy there was decomposing the Gel'fand-Fucks cochain complex into irreducible factors and picking up the trivial representations and their concrete bases, and ours is essentially the same. By computer calculation, we determine the relative Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks cohomology groups of …
Let M be a weakly monotone symplectic manifold, and H be a time-dependent Hamiltonian; we assume that the periodic orbits of the corresponding time-dependent Hamiltonian vector field are non-degenerate. We construct a refined version of the Floer chain complex associated to these data and any regular covering of M, and derive from it new lower bounds for the number of periodic orbits. We prove in particular that if the fundamental group of M is finite and solvable or simple, then the number of periodic orbits is not less than the minimal number of generators of the fundamental group. For a gen…
Various Hamiltonian actions of loop groups $\wt G$ and of the algebra $\text{diff}_1$ of first order differential operators in one variable are defined on the cotangent bundle $T^*\wt G$ of a Loop Group. The moment maps generating the $\text{diff}_1$ actions are shown to factorize through those generating the loop group actions, thereby defining commuting diagrams of Poisson maps to the duals of the corresponding centrally extended algebras. The maps are then used to derive a number of infinite commuting families of Hamiltonian flows that are nonabelian generalizations of the dispersive water …
It is argued that renormalisation group flow can be interpreted as being a Hamiltonian vector flow on a phase space which consists of the couplings of the theory and their conjugate \lq\lq momenta", which are the vacuum expectation values of the corresponding composite operators. The Hamiltonian is linear in the conjugate variables and can be identified with the vacuum expectation value of the trace of the energy-momentum operator. For theories with massive couplings the identity operator plays a central role and its associated coupling gives rise to a potential in the flow equations. The evol…
We show that for a special class of geometric quantizations with "small" quantum errors, the quantum classical correspondence gives rise to an asymptotic projective representation of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. As an application, we get an obstruction to Hamiltonian actions of finitely presented groups.
