A classical result of N. Levinson characterizes the existence of a nonzero integrable function vanishing on a nonempty open subset of the real line in terms of the pointwise decay of its Fourier transform. We prove an analogue of this result for Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type.
In this paper we study an extension problem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type and use the solution to prove Hardy-type inequalities for fractional powers of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. Next, we study the mapping properties of the extension operator. In the last part we prove Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities on these spaces.
Generalizing a result of Roe \cite{Roe} Strichartz proved in \cite{Str} that if a doubly-infinite sequence $\{f_k\}$ of functions on $\R^n$ satisfies $f_{k+1}=Δf_k$ and $|f_{k}(x)|\leq M$ for all $k=0,\pm 1,\pm 2,...$ and $x\in \R^n$, then $Δf_0(x)= -f_0$. Strichartz also showed that the result fails for hyperbolic 3-space. This negative result can be indeed extended to any Riemannian symmetric space of noncompact type. Taking this into account we shall prove that for all Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type the theorem actually holds true when uniform boundedness is modified suitabl…
Let $X$ be a Riemannian symmetric space of noncompact type and $T$ be a linear translation-invariant operator which is bounded on $L^p(X)$. We shall show that if $T$ is not a constant multiple of identity then there exist complex constants $z$ such that $zT$ is chaotic on $L^p(X)$ when $p$ is in the sharp range $2<p<\infty$. This vastly generalizes the result that dynamics of the (perturbed) heat semigroup is chaotic on $X$ proved in [15, 17].
An $L^2$ version of the celebrated Denjoy-Carleman theorem regarding quasi-analytic functions was proved by Chernoff \cite{CR} on $\mathbb R^d$ using iterates of the Laplacian. In $1934$ Ingham \cite{I} used the classical Denjoy-Carleman theorem to relate the decay of Fourier transform and quasi-analyticity of integrable functions on $\mathbb R$. In this paper we extend both these theorems to Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type and show that the theorem of Ingham follows from that of Chernoff.
A result of Chernoff gives sufficient condition for an $L^2$-function on $\R^n$ to be quasi-analytic. This is a generalization of the classical Denjoy-Carleman theorem on $\R$ and of the subsequent work on $\R^n$ by Bochner and Taylor. In this note we endeavour to obtain an exact analogue of the result of Chernoff for $L^p, p\in [1,2]$ functions on the Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. No restriction on the rank of the symmetric spaces and no condition on the symmetry of the functions is assumed.
Let $μ$ be a $K$-invariant compactly supported distribution on a noncompact Riemannian symmetric space $X=G/K$. If the spherical Fourier transform $\widetildeμ(λ)$ is slowly decreasing, it is known that the right convolution operator $c_μ\colon f\mapsto f*μ$ maps $\mathcal E(X)$ onto $\mathcal E(X)$. In this paper, we prove the converse of this result. We also prove that $c_μ$ has a fundamental solution if and only if $\widetildeμ(λ)$ is slowly decreasing.
Ramanujan's Master theorem states that, under suitable conditions, the Mellin transform of a power series provides an interpolation formula for the coefficients of this series. Based on the duality of Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact and noncompact type inside a common complexification, we prove an analogue of Ramanujan's Master Theorem for the spherical Fourier transform of a spherical Fourier series. This extend the results proven by Bertram for Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank-one.
In this paper we consider a complete connected noncompact Riemannian manifold M with bounded geometry and spectral gap. We prove that the imaginary powers of the Laplacian and the Riesz transform are bounded from the Hardy space X^1(M), introduced in previous work of the authors, to L^1(M).
We consider Schrödinger operators on possibly noncompact Riemannian manifolds, acting on sections in vector bundles, with locally square integrable potentials whose negative part is in the underlying Kato class. Using path integral methods, we prove that under geodesic completeness these differential operators are essentially self-adjoint on the space of smooth functions with compact support, and that the corresponding operator closures are semibounded from below. These results apply to nonrelativistic Pauli-Dirac operators that describe the energy of Hydrogen type atoms on Riemannian 3-manifo…
In this paper we consider a complete connected noncompact Riemannian manifold M with bounded geometry and spectral gap. We prove that the Hardy type spaces X^k(M), introduced in a previous paper of the authors, have an atomic characterization. As an application, we prove that the Riesz transforms of even order 2k are bounded from X^k(M) to L^1(M)and on L^p(M) for 1<p<\infty.
We establish sharp Adams type inequalities on Sobolev spaces $W^{α, n/α}(X)$ of any fractional order $α< n$ on Riemannian symmetric space $X$ of noncompact type with dimension $n$ and of arbitrary rank. We also establish sharp Hardy-Adams inequalities on the Sobolev spaces $W^{n/2, 2}(X)$. For the real hyperbolic spaces, such results were recently obtained by J. Li et al. (Trans. AMS, 2020). We use Fourier analysis on the symmetric spaces to obtain these results.
In this paper we consider a complete connected noncompact Riemannian manifold M with Ricci curvature bounded from below, positive injectivity radius and spectral gap b. We introduce a sequence X^1(M), X^2(M), ... of new Hardy spaces on M, the sequence Y^1(M/, Y^2(M), ... of their dual spaces, and show that these spaces may be used to obtain endpoint estimates for purely imaginary powers of the Laplace-Beltrami operator and for more general spectral multipliers associated to the Laplace--Beltrami operator L on M. Under the additional condition that the volume of the geodesic balls of radius r i…
Let $G$ be a noncompact semisimple Lie group equipped with a certain invariant Riemannian metric. Then, we can consider a heat kernel function on $G$ associated to the Riemannian metric. We give an explicit formula for the heat kernel when $G = SL(2,\mathbb{R})$. The main tools are spherical transform and Helgason-Fourier transform for homogeneous vector bundles studied by R. Camporesi.
The notion of strictly outward minimising hull is investigated for open sets of finite perimeter sitting inside a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. Under natural geometric assumptions on the ambient manifold, the strictly outward minimising hull $Ω^*$ of a set $Ω$ is characterised as a maximal volume solution of the least area problem with obstacle, where the obstacle is the set itself. In the case where $Ω$ has $\mathscr{C}^{1, α}$-boundary, the area of $\partial Ω^*$ is recovered as the limit of the $p$-capacities of $Ω$, as $p \to 1^+$. Finally, building on the existence of strictly …
In this paper we prove the Fourier restriction theorem for $p=2$ on Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type with real rank one which extends the earlier result proved in \cite[Theorem 1.1]{KRS}. This result depends on the weak $L^2$ estimates of the Poisson transform of $L^2$ function. By using this estimate of the Poisson transform we also characterizes all weak $L^2$ eigenfunction of the Laplace--Beltrami operator of Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type with real rank one and eigenvalue $-(λ^2+ρ^2)$ for $λ\in\R\setminus\{0\}$.
Let $G $ be a noncompact semisimple Lie group with finite centre. Let $X=G/K$ be the associated Riemannian symmetric space and assume that $X$ is of rank one. The spectral projections associated to the Laplace-Beltrami operator are given by $P_λf =f\ast Φ_λ$, where $Φ_λ$ are the elementary spherical functions on $X$. In this paper, we prove an Ingham type uncertainty principle for $P_λf$. Moreover, similar results are obtained in the case of spectral projections associated to Dunkl Laplacian.
We investigate Sobolev and Hardy inequalities, specifically weighted Minerbe's type estimates, in noncompact complete connected Riemannian manifolds whose geometry is described by an isoperimetric profile. In particular, we assume that the manifold satisfies the $p$-hyperbolicity property, stated in terms of a necessary integral Dini condition on the isoperimetric profile. Our method seems to us to combine sharply the knowledge of the isoperimetric profile and the optimal Bliss type Hardy inequality depending on the geometry of the manifold. We recover the well known best Sobolev constant in t…
In 1975, P.R. Chernoff used iterates of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{R}^n$ to prove an $L^2$ version of the Denjoy-Carleman theorem which provides a sufficient condition for a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}^n$ to be quasi-analytic. In this paper, we prove an exact analogue of Chernoff's theorem for all rank one Riemannian symmetric spaces (of noncompact and compact types) using iterates of the associated Laplace-Beltrami operators.
We prove that if $τ$ is a large positive number, then the atomic Goldberg-type space $\mathfrak{h}^1(N)$ and the space $\mathfrak{h}_{\mathcal R_τ}^1(N)$ of all integrable functions on $N$ whose local Riesz transform $\mathcal R_τ$ is integrable are the same space on any complete noncompact Riemannian manifold $N$ with Ricci curvature bounded from below and positive injectivity radius. We also relate $\mathfrak{h}^1(N)$ to a space of harmonic functions on the slice $N\times (0,δ)$ for $δ>0$ small enough.
In this paper we consider a complete connected noncompact Riemannian manifold M with bounded geometry and spectral gap. We realize the dual space Y^h(M) of the Hardy-type space X^h(M), introduced in a previous paper of the authors, as the class of all locally square integrable functions satisfying suitable BMO-like conditions, where the role of the constants is played by the space of global k-quasi-harmonic functions. Furthermore we prove that Y^h(M) is also the dual of the space X^k_fin(M) of finite linear combination of X^k-atoms. As a consequence, if Z is a Banach space and T is a Z-valued …
We study fractional Sobolev and Besov spaces on noncompact Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry. Usually, these spaces are defined via geodesic normal coordinates which, depending on the problem at hand, may often not be the best choice. We consider a more general definition subject to different local coordinates and give sufficient conditions on the corresponding coordinates resulting in equivalent norms. Our main application is the computation of traces on submanifolds with the help of Fermi coordinates. Our results also hold for corresponding spaces defined on vector bundles of bounde…
