This is the first paper in a series to study vertex algebra-like objects arising from infinite-dimensional quantum groups (quantum affine algebras and Yangians). In this paper we lay the foundation for this study. For any vector space $W$, we study what we call quasi compatible subsets of $\Hom (W,W((x)))$ and we prove that any maximal quasi compatible subspace has a natural nonlocal (namely noncommutative) vertex algebra structure with $W$ as a natural faithful quasi module in a certain sense and that any quasi compatible subset generates a nonlocal vertex algebra with $W$ as a quasi module. In particular, taking $W$ to be a highest weight module for a quantum affine algebra we obtain a nonlocal vertex algebra with $W$ as a quasi module. We also formulate and study a notion of quantum vertex algebra and we give general constructions of nonlocal vertex algebras, quantum vertex algebras and their modules.
A notion of vertex bialgebra and a notion of module nonlocal vertex algebra for a vertex bialgebra are studied and then a smash product construction of nonlocal vertex algebras is presented. For every nonlocal vertex algebra $V$ satisfying a suitable condition, a canonical bialgebra $B(V)$ is constructed such that primitive elements of $B(V)$ are essentially pseudo derivations and group-like elements are essentially pseudo endomorphisms. Furthermore, vertex algebras associated with Heisenberg Lie algebras as well as those associated with nondegenerate even lattices are reconstructed through sm…
In this paper, we study $(G,χ_ϕ)$-equivariant $ϕ$-coordinated quasi modules for nonlocal vertex algebras. Among the main results, we establish several conceptual results, including a generalized commutator formula and a general construction of weak quantum vertex algebras and their $(G,χ_ϕ)$-equivariant $ϕ$-coordinated quasi modules. As an application, we also construct (equivariant) $ϕ$-coordinated quasi modules for lattice vertex algebras by using Lepowsky's work on twisted vertex operators.
This is a paper in a series to study vertex algebra-like structures arising from various algebras including quantum affine algebras and Yangians. In this paper, we study notions of $\hbar$-adic nonlocal vertex algebra and $\hbar$-adic (weak) quantum vertex algebra, slightly generalizing Etingof-Kazhdan's notion of quantum vertex operator algebra. For any topologically free $\C[[\h]]$-module $W$, we study $\hbar$-adically compatible subsets and $\hbar$-adically $§$-local subsets of $(\End W)[[x,x^{-1}]]$. We prove that any $\hbar$-adically compatible subset generates an $\hbar$-adic nonlocal ve…
In this paper we introduce and study a twisted tensor product construction of nonlocal vertex algebras. Among the main results, we establish a universal property and give a characterization of a twisted tensor product. Furthermore, we give a construction of modules for a twisted tensor product. We also show that smash products studied by one of us before can be realized as twisted tensor products.
This is a sequel to \cite{li-qva}. In this paper, we focus on the construction of quantum vertex algebras over $\C$, whose notion was formulated in \cite{li-qva} with Etingof and Kazhdan's notion of quantum vertex operator algebra (over $\C[[h]]$) as one of the main motivations. As one of the main steps in constructing quantum vertex algebras, we prove that every countable-dimensional nonlocal (namely noncommutative) vertex algebra over $\C$, which either is irreducible or has a basis of PBW type, is nondegenerate in the sense of Etingof and Kazhdan. Using this result, we establish the nondege…
We develop a theory of $ϕ$-coordinated (quasi) modules for a nonlocal vertex algebra and we establish a conceptual construction of nonlocal vertex algebras and their $ϕ$-coordinated (quasi) modules, where $ϕ$ is what we call an associate of the one-dimensional additive formal group. By specializing $ϕ$ to a particular associate, we obtain a new construction of weak quantum vertex algebras in the sense of \cite{li-qva1}. As an application, we associate weak quantum vertex algebras to quantum affine algebras, and we also associate quantum vertex algebras and $ϕ$-coordinated modules to a certain …
We study graded nonlocal $\underline{\mathsf{q}}$-vertex algebras and we prove that they can be generated by certain sets of vertex operators. As an application, we consider the family of graded nonlocal $\underline{\mathsf{q}}$-vertex algebras $V_{c,1}$, $c\geq 1$, associated with the principal subspaces $W(cΛ_0)$ of the integrable highest weight $U_q (\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-modules $L(cΛ_0)$. Using quantum integrability, we derive combinatorial bases for $V_{c,1}$ and compute the corresponding character formulae.
A free field representation for the type $I$ vertex operators and the corner transfer matrices of the eight-vertex model is proposed. The construction uses the vertex-face correspondence, which makes it possible to express correlation functions of the eight-vertex model in terms of correlation functions of the SOS model with a nonlocal insertion. This new nonlocal insertion admits of a free field representation in terms of Lukyanov's screening operator. The spectrum of the corner transfer matrix and the Baxter--Kelland formula for the average staggered polarization have been reproduced.
We consider two different methods of associating vertex algebraic structures with the level $1$ principal subspaces for $U_q (\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$. In the first approach, we introduce certain commutative operators and study the corresponding vertex algebra and its module. We find combinatorial bases for these objects and show that they coincide with the principal subspace bases found by B. L. Feigin and A. V. Stoyanovsky. In the second approach, we introduce the, so-called nonlocal $\underline{\mathsf{q}}$-vertex algebras, investigate their properties and construct the nonlocal $\underl…
The notions of N=1 Neveu-Schwarz vertex operator superalgebra over a Grassmann algebra and with odd formal variables and of N=1 Neveu-Schwarz vertex operator superalgebra over a Grassmann algebra and without odd formal variables are introduced, and we show that the respective categories of such objects are isomorphic. The weak supercommutativity and weak associativity properties for an N=1 Neveu-Schwarz vertex operator superalgebra with odd formal variables are established, and we show that in the presence of the other axioms, weak supercommutativity and weak associativity are equivalent to th…
Using some new logarithmic formal calculus, we construct a well known vertex algebra, obtaining the Jacobi identity directly, in an essentially self-contained treatment.
The notion of "N = 2 vertex superalgebra with two odd formal variables" is presented, the main axiom being a Jacobi identity with odd formal variables in which an N=2 superconformal shift is incorporated into the usual Jacobi identity for a vertex superalgebra. It is shown that as a consequence of these axioms, the N=2 vertex superalgebra is naturally a representation of the Lie algebra isomorphic to the three-dimensional algebra of superderivations with basis consisting of the usual conformal operator and the two N=2 superconformal operators. The notion of N=2 Neveu-Schwarz vertex operator su…
Superconformal change of variables formulas for N=1 Neveu-Schwarz vertex operator superalgebras are presented for general invertible superconformal changes of variables. Using the underlying worldsheet supergeometry of propagating superstrings, geometric proofs of the change of variables formulas are given for the case of convergent superconformal changes of variables. More general formal algebraic proofs of the change of variables formulas in the case of formal superconformal changes of variables are then given. Finally, isomorphic families of N=1 NS-VOSAs are derived from the superconformal …
Based on the vertex-face correspondence, we give an algebraic analysis formulation of correlation functions of the $k\times k$ fusion eight-vertex model in terms of the corresponding fusion SOS model. Here $k\in Z_{>0}$. A general formula for correlation functions is derived as a trace over the space of states of lattice operators such as the corner transfer matrices, the half transfer matrices (vertex operators) and the tail operator. We give a realization of these lattice operators as well as the space of states as objects in the level $k$ representation theory of the elliptic algebra $U_{q,…
In this paper, for every one-dimensional formal group $F$ we formulate and study a notion of vertex $F$-algebra and a notion of $ϕ$-coordinated module for a vertex $F$-algebra where $ϕ$ is what we call an associate of $F$. In the case that $F$ is the additive formal group, vertex $F$-algebras are exactly ordinary vertex algebras. We give a canonical isomorphism between the category of vertex $F$-algebras and the category of ordinary vertex algebras. Meanwhile, for every formal group we completely determine its associates. We also study $ϕ$-coordinated modules for a general vertex $\Z$-graded a…
We study a certain linear automorphism of a vertex operator algebra induced by the formal change of variable $f(x)=e^x-1$ and describe examples showing how this relates the theory of vertex operator algebras to Bernoulli numbers, Bernoulli polynomial values, and related numbers. We give a recursion for such numbers derived using vertex operator relations, and study the Jacobi identity for modified vertex operators that was introduced in work of Lepowsky.
We introduce several definitions within the framework of vertex and conformal algebras which are analogous to some important concepts of the classical Lie theory. Most importantly, we define formal vertex laws, which correspond to the notion of formal group law. We prove suitable vertex/conformal versions of a number of classical results such as the Milnor-Moore theorem, Cartier duality, and the equivalence between formal group laws and Lie algebras.

Inspired by the Borcherds' work on ``$G$-vertex algebras,'' we formulate and study an axiomatic counterpart of Borcherds' notion of $G$-vertex algebra for the simplest nontrivial elementary vertex group, which we denote by $G_{1}$. Specifically, we formulate a notion of axiomatic $G_{1}$-vertex algebra, prove certain basic properties and give certain examples, where the notion of axiomatic $G_{1}$-vertex algebra is a nonlocal generalization of the notion of vertex algebra. We also show how to construct axiomatic $G_{1}$-vertex algebras from a set of compatible $G_{1}$-vertex operators. The res…
Belavin's $(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})$-symmetric model is considered on the basis of bosonization of vertex operators in the $A^{(1)}_{n-1}$ model and vertex-face transformation. Free field representations of nonlocal tail operators are constructed for off diagonal matrix elements with respect to the ground state sectors. As a result, integral formulae for form factors of any local operators in the $(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})$-symmetric model can be obtained, in principle.
In a program to formulate and develop two-dimensional conformal field theory in the framework of algebraic geometry, Beilinson and Drinfeld have recently given a notion of ``chiral algebra'' in terms of D-modules on algebraic curves. This definition consists of a ``skew-symmetry'' relation and a ``Jacobi identity'' relation in a categorical setting. In this paper, we show directly that these chiral algebras are essentially the same as vertex algebras without vacuum vector (and without grading), by establishing an equivalence between the skew-symmetry and Jacobi identity relations of Beilinson-…
We study relationships between spinor representations of certain Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras of differential operators on the circle and values of $ζ$--functions at the negative integers. By using formal calculus techniques we discuss the appearance of values of $ζ$--functions at the negative integers underlying the construction. In addition we provide a conceptual explanation of this phenomena through several different notions of normal ordering via vertex operator algebra theory. We also derive a general Jacobi--type identity generalizing our previous construction. At the end we discu…
To give a unified treatment on the association of Lie algebras and vertex algebras, we study $(G,χ_ϕ)$-equivariant $ϕ$-coordinated quasi modules for vertex algebras, where $G$ is a group with $χ_ϕ$ a linear character of $G$ and $ϕ$ is an associate of the one-dimensional additive formal group. The theory of $(G,χ_ϕ)$-equivariant $ϕ$-coordinated quasi modules for nonlocal vertex algebra is established in \cite{JKLT}. In this paper, we concentrate on the context of vertex algebras. We establish several conceptual results, including a generalized commutator formula and a general construction of ve…
This paper studies certain relations among vertex algebras, vertex Lie algebras and vertex Poisson algebras. In this paper, the notions of vertex Lie algebra (conformal algebra) and vertex Poisson algebra are revisited and certain general construction theorems of vertex Poisson algebras are given. A notion of filtered vertex algebra is formulated in terms of a notion of good filtration and it is proved that the associated graded vector space of a filtered vertex algebra is naturally a vertex Poisson algebra. For any vertex algebra $V$, a general construction and a classification of good filtra…
We introduce certain correlation functions (graded $q$--traces) associated to vertex operator algebras and superalgebras which we refer to as $n$--point functions. These naturally arise in the studies of representations of Lie algebras of differential operators on the circle \cite{Le1}--\cite{Le2}, \cite{M}. We investigate their properties and consider the corresponding graded $q$--traces in parallel with the passage from genus 0 to genus 1 conformal field theory. By using the vertex operator algebra theory we analyze in detail correlation functions in some particular cases. We obtain elliptic…
The paper is devoted to the symmetry aspects of 2D nonlocal field theory, which is the simplest deformation of the conformally invariant quantum field theory with one free bosonic field. The inverse problem of representation theory is solved for $q_R$-conformal symmetries, which are infinite dimensional hidden symmetries of the field theory. There is developed a mathematical formalism based on the abstract categorical representation theory and sufficient for applications of symmetry methods to the investigation of processes of synthesis, decay and interaction of quasiparticles in the models of…
We present a strong connection between quantum information and quantum permutation groups. Specifically, we define a notion of quantum isomorphisms of graphs based on quantum automorphisms from the theory of quantum groups, and then show that this is equivalent to the previously defined notion of quantum isomorphism corresponding to perfect quantum strategies to the isomorphism game. Moreover, we show that two connected graphs $X$ and $Y$ are quantum isomorphic if and only if there exists $x \in V(X)$ and $y \in V(Y)$ that are in the same orbit of the quantum automorphism group of the disjoint…
