The irreducible $*$-representations of the Lie algebra $su(1,1)$ consist of discrete series representations, principal unitary series and complementary series. We calculate Racah coefficients for tensor product representations that consist of at least two discrete series representations. We use the explicit expressions for the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients as hypergeometric functions to find explicit expressions for the Racah coefficients. The Racah coefficients are Wilson polynomials and Wilson functions. This leads to natural interpretations of the Wilson function transforms. As an application several sum and integral identities are obtained involving Wilson polynomials and Wilson functions. We also compute Racah coefficients for $U_q(\su(1,1))$, which turn out to be Askey-Wilson functions and Askey-Wilson polynomials.
The algebraic underpinning of the tridiagonalization procedure is investigated. The focus is put on the tridiagonalization of the hypergeometric operator and its associated quadratic Jacobi algebra. It is shown that under tridiagonalization, the quadratic Jacobi algebra becomes the quadratic Racah-Wilson algebra associated to the generic Racah/Wilson polynomials. A degenerate case leading to the Hahn algebra is also discussed.
We construct a commutative algebra A_x of difference operators in R^p, depending on p+3 real parameters which is diagonalized by the multivariable Racah polynomials R_p(n;x) considered by Tratnik [27]. It is shown that for specific values of the variables x=(x_1,x_2,...,x_p) there is a hidden duality between n and x. Analytic continuation allows us to construct another commutative algebra A_n in the variables n=(n_1,n_2,...,n_p) which is also diagonalized by R_p(n;x). Thus R_p(n;x) solve a multivariable discrete bispectral problem in the sense of Duistermaat and Grunbaum [8]. Since a change of…
In previous papers, we discussed the recurrence relations of the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials of the Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson types. In this paper we explore those of the Racah and $q$-Racah types. For the $M$-indexed ($q$-)Racah polynomials, we derive $3+2M$ term recurrence relations with variable dependent coefficients and $1+2L$ term ($L\geq M+1$) recurrence relations with constant coefficients. Based on the latter, the generalized closure relations and the creation and annihilation operators of the quantum mechanical systems described by the multi-indexed ($q$-)Rac…
A limit formula from q-Racah polynomials to big q-Jacobi polynomials is given which can be considered as a limit formula for orthogonal polynomials. This is extended to a multi-parameter limit with 3 parameters, also involving (q-)Hahn polynomials, little q-Jacobi polynomials and Jacobi polynomials. Also the limits from Askey-Wilson to Wilson polynomials and from q-Racah to Racah polynomials are given in a more conceptual way.
The exceptional Racah and q-Racah polynomials are constructed. Together with the exceptional Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials discovered by the present authors in 2009, they exhaust the generic exceptional orthogonal polynomials of a single variable.
New bispectral orthogonal polynomials are obtained from an unconventional truncation of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. In the limit $q \to 1$, they reduce to the para-Racah polynomials which are orthogonal with respect to a quadratic bi-lattice. The three term recurrence relation and q-difference equation are obtained through limits of those of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. An explicit expression in terms of hypergeometric series and the orthogonality relation are provided. A $q$-generalization of the para-Krawtchouk polynomials is obtained as a special case. Connections with the $q$-Racah and …
Upon solving a finite discrete reduction of the difference Heun equation, we arrive at an elliptic generalization of the Racah polynomials. We exhibit the three-term recurrence relation and the orthogonality relations for these elliptic Racah polynomials. The well-known $q$-Racah polynomials of Askey and Wilson are recovered as a trigonometric limit.
New bispectral polynomials orthogonal on a quadratic bi-lattice are obtained from a truncation of Wilson polynomials. Recurrence relation and difference equation are provided. The recurrence coefficients can be encoded in a perturbed persymmetric Jacobi matrix. The orthogonality relation and an explicit expression in terms of hypergeometric functions are also given. Special cases and connections with the para-Krawtchouk polynomials and the dual-Hahn polynomials are also discussed.
The Koornwinder-Macdonald multivariable generalization of the Askey-Wilson polynomials is studied for parameters satisfying a truncation condition such that the orthogonality measure becomes discrete with support on a finite grid. For this parameter regime the polynomials may be seen as a multivariable counterpart of the (one-variable) $q$-Racah polynomials. We present the discrete orthogonality measure, expressions for the normalization constants converting the polynomials into an orthonormal system (in terms of the normalization constant for the unit polynomial), and we discuss the limit $q\…
The Racah problem for the quantum superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}_{q}(1|2)$ is considered. The intermediate Casimir operators are shown to realize a $q$-deformation of the Bannai-Ito algebra. The Racah coefficients of $\mathfrak{osp}_q(1|2)$ are calculated explicitly in terms of basic orthogonal polynomials that $q$-generalize the Bannai-Ito polynomials. The relation between these $q$-deformed Bannai-Ito polynomials and the $q$-Racah/Askey-Wilson polynomials is discussed.
We observe that the linearization coefficients for ultraspherical polynomials are the orthogonality weights for Racah polynomials with special parameters. Then it turns out that the linearization sum with such a Racah polynomial as extra factor inserted, can also be evaluated. The corresponding Fourier--Racah expansion is an addition type formula which is dual to the well-known addition formula for ultraspherical polynomials. The limit to the case of Hermite polynomials of this dual addition formula is also considered. Similar results as for ultraspherical polynomials, although only formal, ar…
We show that the symmetry operators for the quantum superintegrable system on the 3-sphere with generic 4-parameter potential form a closed quadratic algebra with 6 linearly independent generators that closes at order 6 (as differential operators). Further there is an algebraic relation at order 8 expressing the fact that there are only 5 algebraically independent generators. We work out the details of modeling physically relevant irreducible representations of the quadratic algebra in terms of divided difference operators in two variables. We determine several ON bases for this model includin…
In this paper, a fourth-order partial divided-difference equation on quadratic lattices with polynomial coefficients satisfied by bivariate Racah polynomials is presented. From this equation we obtain explicitly the matrix coefficients appearing in the three-term recurrence relations satisfied by any bivariate orthogonal polynomial solution of the equation. In particular, we provide explicit expressions for the matrices in the three-term recurrence relations satisfied by the bivariate Racah polynomials introduced by Tratnik. Moreover, we present the family of monic bivariate Racah polynomials …
In this paper we derive a relation for a class of Racah polynomials that appear in a conjecture of Kresch and Tamvakis. The relation follows from an inversion formula for a transformation of a discrete sequence of complex numbers $\{ x_n \}_{n=0}^{\infty}$. As a result of our inversion formula, we also obtain other combinatorial identities.
The $q$-difference equation, the shift and the contiguity relations of the Askey-Wilson polynomials are cast in the framework of the three and four-dimensional degenerate Sklyanin algebras $\mathfrak{ska}_3$ and $\mathfrak{ska}_4$. It is shown that the $q$-para Racah polynomials corresponding to a non-conventional truncation of the Askey-Wilson polynomials form a basis for a finite-dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{ska}_4$. The first order Heun operators defined by a degree raising condition on polynomials are shown to form a five-dimensional vector space that encompasses $\mathfrak{ska…
As the third stage of the project multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, we present, in the framework of 'discrete quantum mechanics' with pure imaginary shifts in one dimension, the multi-indexed Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. They are obtained from the original Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials by multiple application of the discrete analogue of the Darboux transformations or the Crum-Krein-Adler deletion of 'virtual state solutions' of type I and II, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre, Jacobi and (q-)Racah polynomials reported earlier.
The multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials (the Meixner, little $q$-Jacobi (Laguerre), ($q$-)Racah, Wilson, Askey-Wilson types) satisfying second order difference equations were constructed in discrete quantum mechanics. They are polynomials in the sinusoidal coordinates $η(x)$ ($x$ is the coordinate of quantum system) and expressed in terms of the Casorati determinants whose matrix elements are functions of $x$ at various points. By using shape invariance properties, we derive various equivalent determinant expressions, especially those whose matrix elements are functions of the same point $x$.…
As the second stage of the project multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, we present, in the framework of `discrete quantum mechanics' with real shifts in one dimension, the multi-indexed (q-)Racah polynomials. They are obtained from the (q-)Racah polynomials by multiple application of the discrete analogue of the Darboux transformations or the Crum-Krein-Adler deletion of `virtual state' vectors, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials reported earlier. The virtual state vectors are the `solutions' of the matrix Schrödinger equation with negative `eigenvalues', ex…
Racah and Wilson polynomials with dilated and translated argument are reparametrized such that the polynomials are continuous in the parameters as long as these are nonnegative, and such that restriction of one or more of the new parameters to zero yields orthogonal polynomials lower in the Askey scheme. Geometrically this will be described as a manifold with corners.
We obtain new explicit formulas for the recurrence coefficients of the q-orthogonal polynomial sequences in a class that extends the q-Askey scheme. Our formulas express the recurrence coefficients in terms of four parameters that determine the zeroes and poles. By direct substitution of particular values for the four parameters we obtain all the polynomial sequences in the q-Askey scheme, including the Askey-Wilson and the Racah polynomials. We also obtain some families of sequences that may be new.
A q-analogue a pair of multivariable biorthogonal polynomials found by M.V.Tratnik in 1989 is derived. The weight function is a product of a multivariable version of the integrand in the Askey-Roy integral and of the Askey-Wilson weight function in a single variable. In addition, a biorthogonality relation is derived for certain bivariate extensions of the $q$-Racah polynomials.
Matrix-valued spherical functions related to the quantum symmetric pair for the quantum analogue of $(SU(2) \times SU(2), \text{diag})$ are introduced and studied in detail. The quantum symmetric pair is given in terms of a quantised universal enveloping algebra with a coideal subalgebra. The matrix-valued spherical functions give rise to matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials, which are matrix-valued analogues of a subfamily of Askey-Wilson polynomials. For these matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials a number of properties are derived using this quantum group interpretation: the orthogonality re…
The Askey-Wilson function transform is a q-analogue of the Jacobi function transform with kernel given by an explicit non-polynomial eigenfunction of the Askey-Wilson second order q-difference operator. The kernel is called the Askey-Wilson function. In this paper an explicit expansion formula for the Askey-Wilson function in terms of Askey-Wilson polynomials is proven. With this expansion formula at hand, the image under the Askey-Wilson function transform of an Askey-Wilson polynomial multiplied by an analogue of the Gaussian is computed explicitly. As a special case of these formulas a q-an…
In this paper we present an addition to Askey's scheme of q-hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials involving classes of q-special functions which do not consist of polynomials only. The special functions are q-analogues of the Jacobi and Bessel function, and are Askey-Wilson functions, big q-Jacobi functions and little q-Jacobi functions and the corrresponding q-Bessel functions. The generalised orthogonality relations and the second order q-difference equations for these families are given. Limit transitions between these families are discussed. The quantum group theoretic interpretations are …
In this paper we present an explicit (rank one) function transform which contains several Jacobi-type function transforms and Hankel-type transforms as degenerate cases. The kernel of the transform, which is given explicitly in terms of basic hypergeometric series, thus generalizes the Jacobi function as well as the Bessel function. The kernel is named the Askey-Wilson function, since it provides an analytical continuation of the Askey-Wilson polynomial in its degree. In this paper we establish the $L^2$-theory of the Askey-Wilson function transform, and we explicitely determine its inversion …
The main goal is to interpret the Askey-Wilson function and the corresponding transform pair on the quantum SU(1,1) group. A weight on the C^*-algebra of continuous functions vanishing at infinity on the quantum SU(1,1) group is studied, which is left and right invariant in a weak sense with respect to a product defined using Wall functions. The Haar weight restricted to certain subalgebras are explicitly determined in terms of an infinitely supported Jackson integral and in terms of an infinitely supported Askey-Wilson type measure. For the evaluation the spectral analysis of explicit unbound…
Two unitary integral transforms with a very-well poised $_7F_6$-function as a kernel are given. For both integral transforms the inverse is the same as the original transform after an involution on the parameters. The $_7F_6$-function involved can be considered as a non-polynomial extension of the Wilson polynomial, and is therefore called a Wilson function. The two integral transforms are called a Wilson function transform of type I and type II. Furthermore, a few explicit transformations of hypergeometric functions are calculated, and it is shown that the Wilson function transform of type I …
In this survey paper, we exhaustively explore the terminating basic hypergeometric representations of the Askey-Wilson polynomials and the corresponding terminating basic hypergeometric transformations that these polynomials satisfy. From the terminating basic hypergeometric representations of these polynomials, and due to symmetry in their free parameters, we are able to exhaustively explore the terminating basic hypergeometric transformation formulae which these polynomials satisfy.
Wiener used the Poisson kernel for the Hermite polynomials to deal with the classical Fourier transform. Askey, Atakishiyev and Suslov used this approach to obtain a q-Fourier transform by using the continuous q-Hermite polynomials. Rahman and Suslov extended this result by taking the Askey--Wilson polynomials, considered to be the most general continuous classical orthogonal polynomials. The theory of q-Fourier transformation is further extended here by considering a nonsymmetric version of the Poisson kernel with Askey--Wilson polynomials. This approach enables us to obtain some new results,…
The Askey--Wilson polynomials are the most general classical orthogonal polynomials that are known and the Nassrallah--Rahman integral is a very general extension of Euler's integral representation of the classical $_2F_1$ function. Based on a $q$-series transformation formula and the Nassrallah--Rahman integral we prove a $q$--beta integral which has twelve parameters, with several other results, both classical and new, included as special cases. This $q$-beta integral also allows us to derive a curious double $q$--series transformation formula, which includes one formula of Al--Salam and Ism…
We introduce a pair of novel difference equations, whose solutions are expressed in terms of Racah or Wilson polynomials depending on the nature of the finite-difference step. A number of special cases and limit relations are also examined, which allow to introduce similar difference equations for the orthogonal polynomials of the $ _3 F_2$ and $ _2 F_1$ types. It is shown that the introduced equations allow to construct new models of exactly-solvable quantum dynamical systems, such as spin chains with a nearest-neighbour interaction and fermionic quantum oscillator models.
We derive a beta-integral over $\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{R}$ , which is a counterpart of the Dougall $_5H_5$-formula and of the de Branges--Wilson integral, our integral includes $_{10}H_{10}$-summation. For a derivation we use a two-dimensional integral transform related to representations of the Lorentz group, this transform is a counterpart of the Olevskii index transform (a synonym: Jacobi transform).
We introduce multiple Wilson polynomials, which give a new example of multiple orthogonal polynomials (Hermite-Pade polynomials) of type II. These polynomials can be written as a Jacobi-Pineiro transform, which is a generalization of the Jacobi transform for Wilson polynomials, found by T.H. Koornwinder. Here we need to introduce Jacobi and Jacobi-Pineiro polynomials with complex parameters. Some explicit formulas are provided for both Jacobi-Pineiro and multiple Wilson polynomials, one of them in terms of Kampe de Feriet series. Finally we look at some limiting relations and construct a part …
We study Askey-Wilson type polynomials using representation theory of the double affine Hecke algebra. In particular, we prove bi-orthogonality relations for non-symmetric and anti-symmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials with respect to a complex measure. We give duality properties of the non-symmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials, and we show how the non-symmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials can be created from Sahi's intertwiners. The diagonal terms associated to the bi-orthogonality relations (which replace the notion of quadratic norm evaluations for orthogonal polynomials) are expressed in terms of r…
An alternative derivation is presented of the infinitely many exceptional Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials, which were introduced by the present authors in 2009. Darboux-Crum transformations intertwining the discrete quantum mechanical systems of the original and the exceptional polynomials play an important role. Infinitely many continuous Hahn polynomials are derived in the same manner. The present method provides a simple proof of the shape invariance of these systems as in the corresponding cases of the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials.
We introduce three one-parameter semigroups of operators and determine their spectra. Two of them are fractional integrals associated with the Askey-Wilson operator. We also study these families as families of positive linear approximation operators. Applications include connection relations and bilinear formulas for the Askey-Wilson polynomials. We also introduce a q-Gauss-Weierstrass transform and prove a representation and inversion theorem for it.
By using two known transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series, we establish a direct extension of Bailey's $_6ψ_6$-series identity. Subsequently, it and Milne's identity are employed to drive multi-variable generalizations of Ramanujan's reciprocity formula. Then we utilize also Milne's identity to deduce a multi-variable generalization of the Askey-Wilson integral.
We construct 3 finite systems of $4-F-3$ hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. The weights are 1) the weight defined by the $5-H-5$ Dougall summation formula; 2) the integrand in the Askey beta-integral; 3) the weight $w(s)=|p(s)/q(s)|^2$, where $p(s)=Γ(a+is)Γ(b+is)Γ(c+is)$ and $q(s)=Γ(d+is)Γ(2is)$. We also evaluate the integral of the function $w(s)$ using the Jacobi transform (the Olevsky transform); this integral also can be reduced to the Nassrallah--Rahman integral.
In this paper, we explore the symmetric nature of the terminating basic hypergeometric series representations of the Askey--Wilson polynomials and the corresponding terminating basic hypergeometric transformations that these polynomials satisfy. In particular we identify and classify the set of 4 and 7 equivalence classes of terminating balanced ${}_4ϕ_3$ and terminating very-well poised ${}_8W_7$ basic hypergeometric series which are connected with the Askey--Wilson polynomials. We study the inversion properties of these equivalence classes and also identify the connection of both sets of equ…
We describe the Bellman function technique for proving sharp inequalities in harmonic analysis. To provide an example along with historical context, we present how it was originally used by Donald Burkholder to prove $L^p$ boundedness of the $\pm 1$ martingale transform. Finally, with Burkholder's result as a blueprint, we use the Bellman function to prove a new result related to the Chang-Wilson-Wolff Inequality.
We first show how one can obtain Al-Salam--Chihara polynomials, continuous dual $q$-Hahn polynomials, and Askey--Wilson polynomials from the little $q$-Laguerre and the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials by using special transformations. This procedure is then extended to obtain multiple Askey--Wilson, multiple continuous dual $q$-Hahn, and multiple Al-Salam--Chihara polynomials from the multiple little $q$-Laguerre and the multiple little $q$-Jacobi polynomials.
We introduce an algebra $\mathcal H$ consisting of difference-reflection operators and multiplication operators that can be considered as a $q=1$ analogue of Sahi's double affine Hecke algebra related to the affine root system of type $(C^\vee_1, C_1)$. We study eigenfunctions of a Dunkl-Cherednik-type operator in the algebra $\mathcal H$, and the corresponding Fourier transforms. These eigenfunctions are non-symmetric versions of the Wilson polynomials and the Wilson functions.
Consider a root system of type $BC_1$ on the real line $\mathbb R$ with general positive multiplicities. The Cherednik-Opdam transform defines a unitary operator from an $L^2$-space on $\mathbb R$ to a $L^2$-space of $\mathbb C^2$-valued functions on $\mathbb R^+$ with the Harish-Chandra measure $|c(\lam)|^{-2}d\lam$. By introducing a weight function of the form $\cosh^{-\sig}(t)\tanh^{2k} t$ on $\mathbb R$ we find an orthogonal basis for the $L^2$-space on $\mathbb R$ consisting of even and odd functions expressed in terms of the Jacobi polynomials (for each fixed $\sig$ and $k$). We find a R…
Infinitely many Casoratian identities are derived for the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials in parallel to the Wronskian identities for the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials, which were reported recently by the present authors. These identities form the basis of the equivalence between eigenstate adding and deleting Darboux transformations for solvable (discrete) quantum mechanical systems. Similar identities hold for various reduced form polynomials of the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials, e.g. the continuous q-Jacobi, continuous (dual) (q-)Hahn, Meixner-Pollaczek, Al-Salam-Chihar…
