A certain inequality conjectured by Vershynin is studied. It is proved that for any $n$-dimensional symmetric convex body $K$ with inradius $w$ and $γ_{n}(K) \leq 1/2$ there is $γ_{n}(sK) \leq (2s)^{w^{2}/4}γ_{n}(K)$ for any $s \in [0,1]$. Some natural corollaries are deduced. Another conjecture of Vershynin is proved to be false.
We prove some "high probability" results on the expected value of the mean width for random perturbations of random polytopes. The random perturbations are considered for Gaussian and $p$-stable random vectors, as well as uniform distributions on $\ell_p^N$-balls and the unit sphere.
Let $X_1, \ldots, X_n$ be independent random points drawn from an absolutely continuous probability measure with density $f$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Under mild conditions on $f$, we derive a Poisson limit theorem for the number of large probability nearest neighbor balls. Denoting by $P_n$ the maximum probability measure of nearest neighbor balls, this limit theorem implies a Gumbel extreme value distribution for $nP_n - \ln n$ as $n \to \infty$. Moreover, we derive a tight upper bound on the upper tail of the distribution of $nP_n - \ln n$, which does not depend on $f$.
We consider the stochastic heat equation on $[0,\,1]$ with periodic boundary conditions and driven by space-time white noise. Under various natural conditions, we study small ball probabilities for the Hölder semi-norms of the solutions, and provide near optimal bounds on these probabilities. As an application, we prove a support theorem in these Hölder semi-norms.
Let $ξ$ be a real random variable with mean zero and variance one and $A={a_1,...,a_n}$ be a multi-set in $\R^d$. The random sum $$S_A := a_1 ξ_1 + ... + a_n ξ_n $$ where $ξ_i$ are iid copies of $ξ$ is of fundamental importance in probability and its applications. We discuss the small ball problem, the aim of which is to estimate the maximum probability that $S_A$ belongs to a ball with given small radius, following the discovery made by Littlewood-Offord and Erdos almost 70 years ago. We will mainly focus on recent developments that characterize the structure of those sets $A$ where the small…
Let $X$ be an isotropic random vector in $R^d$ that satisfies that for every $v \in S^{d-1}$, $\|<X,v>\|_{L_q} \leq L \|<X,v>\|_{L_p}$ for some $q \geq 2p$. We show that for $0<\varepsilon<1$, a set of $N = c(p,q,\varepsilon) d$ random points, selected independently according to $X$, can be used to construct a $1 \pm \varepsilon$ approximation of the $L_p$ unit ball endowed on $R^d$ by $X$. Moreover, $c(p,q,\varepsilon) \leq c^p \varepsilon^{-2}\log(2/\varepsilon)$; when $q=2p$ the approximation is achieved with probability at least $1-2\exp(-cN \varepsilon^2/\log^2(2/\varepsilon))$ and if $q$…
Let $A$ be an $n\times n$ random matrix with i.i.d. entries of zero mean, unit variance and a bounded subgaussian moment. We show that the condition number $s_{\max}(A)/s_{\min}(A)$ satisfies the small ball probability estimate $${\mathbb P}\big\{s_{\max}(A)/s_{\min}(A)\leq n/t\big\}\leq 2\exp(-c t^2),\quad t\geq 1,$$ where $c>0$ may only depend on the subgaussian moment. Although the estimate can be obtained as a combination of known results and techniques, it was not noticed in the literature before. As a key step of the proof, we apply estimates for the singular values of $A$, ${\mathbb P}\…
We study a Pólya-type urn model defined as follows. Start at time 0 with a single ball of some colour. Then, at each time n>0, choose a ball from the urn uniformly at random. With probability 1/2<p<1, return the ball to the urn along with another ball of the same colour. With probability 1-p, recolour the ball to a new colour and then return it to the urn. This is equivalent to the supercritical case of a random graph model studied by Backhausz and Móri, and Thörnblad. We prove that, with probability 1, there is a dominating colour, in the sense that, after some random but finite time, there i…
Given a prior probability density $p$ on a compact set $K$ we characterize the probability distribution $q_δ^*$ on $K$ contained in a Wasserstein ball $B_δ(μ)$ centered in a given discrete measure $μ$ for which the relative-entropy $H(q,p)$ achieves its minimum. This characterization gives us an algorithm for computing such distributions efficiently
For a random walk in an elliptic i.i.d. random environment in dimension greater than or equal to 4, satisfying the a ballisticity condition slightly weaker than condition (T'), We consider the probability of linear slowdown. We show an upper bound for this probability which is very close to the lower bound obtained by the "naive trap" analysis. As a tool for obtaining the main result, we show an almost local version of the quenched central limit theorem under the same ballisticity condition.
Balls-in-bins models describe a random sequential allocation of infinitely many balls into a finite number of bins. In these models a ball is placed into a bin with probability proportional to a given function (feedback function), which depends on the number of existing balls in the bin. Typically, the feedback function is the same for all bins (symmetric feedback), and there are no constraints on the number of balls in the bins. In this paper we study versions of BB models with two bins, in which the above assumptions are violated. In the first model of interest the feedback functions can dep…
We study first passage statistics of the Polya urn model. In this random process, the urn contains two types of balls. In each step, one ball is drawn randomly from the urn, and subsequently placed back into the urn together with an additional ball of the same type. We derive the probability G_n that the two types of balls are equal in number, for the first time, when there is a total of 2n balls. This first passage probability decays algebraically, G_n ~ n^{-2}, when n is large. We also derive the probability that a tie ever happens. This probability is between zero and one, so that a tie may…
Place an obstacle with probability $1-p$ independently at each vertex of $\mathbb Z^d$, and run a simple random walk until hitting one of the obstacles. For $d\geq 2$ and $p$ strictly above the critical threshold for site percolation, we condition on the environment where the origin is contained in an infinite connected component free of obstacles, and we show that for environments with probability tending to one as $n\to \infty$ there exists a unique discrete Euclidean ball of volume $d \log_{1/p} n$ asymptotically such that the following holds: conditioned on survival up to time $n$ we have …
Several differential equations usually appearing in mathematical physics are solved through a power series expansion, which reduces in solving difference equations. In this paper a probability problem is presented whose solution follows a completely reversed but systematic approach. Hence, this work is about illustrating how complex probability problems could be tackled with the more powerful techniques of a better studied and well understood field, that of differential equations. The problem is defined as follows: Inside a box containing r red and w white balls random removals occur. The ball…
We prove that the probability that a sum of independent random variables in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with bounded densities lies in a ball is maximized by taking uniform distributions on balls. This in turn generalizes a result by Rogozin on the maximum density of such sums on the line.
We derive tight non-asymptotic bounds for the Kolmogorov distance between the probabilities of two Gaussian elements to hit a ball in a Hilbert space. The key property of these bounds is that they are dimension-free and depend on the nuclear (Schatten-one) norm of the difference between the covariance operators of the elements and on the norm of the mean shift. The obtained bounds significantly improve the bound based on Pinsker's inequality via the Kullback-Leibler divergence. We also establish an anti-concentration bound for a squared norm of a non-centered Gaussian element in Hilbert space.…
The aim of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of strongly reinforced interacting urns with partial memory sharing. The reinforcement mechanism considered is as follows: draw at each step and for each urn a white or black ball from either all the urns combined (with probability $p$) or the urn alone (with probability $1-p$) and add a new ball of the same color to this urn. The probability of drawing a ball of a certain color is proportional to $w_k$ where $k$ is the number of balls of this color. The higher the $p$, the more memory is shared between the urns. The main results can be…
We show that small ball estimates together with Holder continuity assumption allow to obtain new representation results in models with long memory. In order to apply these results, we establish small ball probability estimates for Gaussian processes whose incremental variance admits two-sided estimates and the incremental covariance preserves sign. As a result, we obtain small ball estimates for integral transforms of Wiener processes and of fractional Brownian motion with Volterra kernels.
We consider a Polya urn, started with b black and w white balls, where b>w. We compute the probability that there are ever the same number of black and white balls in the urn, and show that it is twice the probability of getting no more than w-1 heads in b+w-1 tosses of a fair coin.
In this paper, we investigate two-sided bounds for the small ball probability of a mixed fractional Brownian motion with a general deterministic trend function, in terms of respective small ball probability of a mixed fractional Brownian motion without trend. To maximize the lower bound, we consider various ways to split the trend function between the components of the mixed fractional Brownian motion for the application of Girsanov theorem, and we show that the optimal split is the solution of a Fredholm integral equation. We find that the upper bound for the probability is also a function of…
Asymptotic factorizations for the small-ball probability (SmBP) of a Hilbert valued random element $X$ are rigorously established and discussed. In particular, given the first $d$ principal components (PCs) and as the radius $\varepsilon$ of the ball tends to zero, the SmBP is asymptotically proportional to (a) the joint density of the first $d$ PCs, (b) the volume of the $d$-dimensional ball with radius $\varepsilon$, and (c) a correction factor weighting the use of a truncated version of the process expansion. Moreover, under suitable assumptions on the spectrum of the covariance operator of…
We study concentration properties of random vectors of the form $AX$, where $X = (X_1, ..., X_n)$ has independent coordinates and $A$ is a given matrix. We show that the distribution of $AX$ is well spread in space whenever the distributions of $X_i$ are well spread on the line. Specifically, assume that the probability that $X_i$ falls in any given interval of length $T$ is at most $p$. Then the probability that $AX$ falls in any given ball of radius $T \|A\|_{HS}$ is at most $(Cp)^{0.9 r(A)}$, where $r(A)$ denotes the stable rank of $A$ and $C$ is an absolute constant.
This note contains two types of small ball estimates for random vectors in finite dimensional spaces equipped with a quasi-norm. In the first part, we obtain bounds for the small ball probability of random vectors under some smoothness assumptions on their density function. In the second part, we obtain Littlewood-Offord type estimates for quasi-norms. This generalizes a result which was previously obtained by Friedland and Sodin and by Rudelson and Vershynin.
Three-speed ballistic annihilation starts with infinitely many particles on the real line. Each is independently assigned either speed-$0$ with probability $p$, or speed-$\pm 1$ symmetrically with the remaining probability. All particles simultaneously begin moving at their assigned speeds and mutually annihilate upon colliding. Physicists conjecture when $p \leq p_c = 1/4$ all particles are eventually annihilated. Dygert et. al. prove $p_c \leq .3313$, while Sidoravicius and Tournier describe an approach to prove $p_c \leq .3281$. For the variant in which particles start at the integers, we i…
We show that the uniform norm of generalized grey Brownian motion over the unit interval has an analytic density, excluding the special case of fractional Brownian motion. Our main result is an asymptotic expansion for the small ball probability of generalized grey Brownian motion, which extends to other norms on path space. The decay rate is not exponential but polynomial, of degree two. For the uniform norm and the Hölder norm, we also prove a large deviations estimate.
Sharp large deviation results of Bahadur-Ranga Rao type are provided for the $q$-norm of random vectors distributed on the $\ell _{p}^{n}$-ball ${\mathbb{B}}^{n}_{p}$ according to the cone probability measure or the uniform distribution for $1 \le q<p < \infty $, thereby furthering previous large deviation results by Kabluchko, Prochno and Thäle in the same setting. These results are then applied to deduce sharp asymptotics for intersection volumes of different $\ell _{p}^{n}$-balls in the spirit of Schechtman and Schmuckenschläger, and for the length of the projection of an $\ell _{p}^{n}$-ba…
For the exactly solvable model of exponential last passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, consider the geodesic $Γ_n$ joining $(0,0)$ and $(n,n)$ for large $n$. It is well known that the transversal fluctuation of $Γ_n$ around the line $x=y$ is $n^{2/3+o(1)}$ with high probability. We obtain the exponent governing the decay of the small ball probability for $Γ_{n}$ and establish that for small $δ$, the probability that $Γ_{n}$ is contained in a strip of width $δn^{2/3}$ around the diagonal is $\exp (-Θ(δ^{-3/2}))$ uniformly in high $n$. We also obtain optimal small deviation estimates for the …
