We calculate the spectra and spectral measures associated to random walks on restricted wreath products of finite groups with the infinite cyclic group, by calculating the Kesten-von Neumann-Serre spectral measures for the random walks on Schreier graphs of certain groups generated by automata. This generalises the work of Grigorchuk and Zuk on the lamplighter group. In the process we characterise when the usual spectral measure for a group generated by automata coincides with the Kesten-von Neumann-Serre spectral measure.
We consider the two generalizations of lamplighter groups: automata groups generated by Cayley machine and cross-wired lamplighter groups. For a finite step two nilpotent group with central squares, we study its associated Cayley machine and give a presentation of the corresponding automata group. We show the automata group is a cross-wired lamplighter group and does not embed in the wreath product of a finite group with a torsion free group. For a subfamily of such finite step two nilpotent groups, we prove that their associated automata groups are linear.
We explore the geometry of the Cayley graphs of the lamplighter groups and a wide range of wreath products. We show that these groups have dead end elements of arbitrary depth with respect to their natural generating sets. An element $w$ in a group $G$ with finite generating set $X$ is a dead end element if no geodesic ray from the identity to $w$ in the Cayley graph $Γ(G,X)$ can be extended past $w$. Additionally, we describe some nonconvex behavior of paths between elements in these Cayley graphs and seesaw words, which are potential obstructions to these graphs satisfying the $k$-fellow tra…
It is known that splittings of finitely presented groups over 2-ended groups can be characterized geometrically. We show that this characterization does not extend to all finitely generated groups. Answering a question of Kleiner we show that the Cayley graph of the lamplighter group is coarsely separated by quasi-circles.
We show presentations of automata groups generated by Cayley machines of finite groups of nilpotency class two and these automata groups are all cross-wired lamplighters.
We introduce a notion of "simulation" for labelled graphs, in which edges of the simulated graph are realized by regular expressions in the simulating graph, and prove that the tiling problem (aka "domino problem") for the simulating graph is at least as difficult as that for the simulated graph. We apply this to the Cayley graph of the "lamplighter group" $L=\mathbb Z/2\wr\mathbb Z$, and more generally to "Diestel-Leader graphs". We prove that these graphs simulate the plane, and thus deduce that the seeded tiling problem is unsolvable on the group $L$. We note that $L$ does not contain any p…
We examine the geometry of the Cayley graph of the lamplighter group with respect to the generating set rising from its interpretation as an automata group due to Grigorchuk and Zuk. We find some metric behavior with respect to this generating set analogous to the metric behavior in the standard wreath product generating set. The similar metric behavior includes expressions for geodesic paths and families of `dead-end' elements, which are endpoints of terminating geodesic rays. We also exhibit some different metric behavior between these two generating sets related to the existence of `seesaw'…
Bartholdi, Neuhauser and Woess proved that a family of metabelian groups including lamplighters have a striking geometric manifestation as 1-skeleta of horocyclic products of trees. The purpose of this article is to give an elementary account of this result, to widen the family addressed to include the infinite valence case (for instance $\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z}$), and to make the translation between the algebraic and geometric descriptions explicit. In the rank-2 case, where the groups concerned include a celebrated example of Baumslag and Remeslennikov, we give the translation by means of …
Let $Γ_d(q)$ denote the group whose Cayley graph with respect to a particular generating set is the Diestel-Leader graph $DL_d(q)$, as described by Bartholdi, Neuhauser and Woess. We compute both $Aut(Γ_d(q))$ and $Out(Γ_d(q))$ for $d \geq 2$, and apply our results to count twisted conjugacy classes in these groups when $d \geq 3$. Specifically, we show that when $d \geq 3$, the groups $Γ_d(q)$ have property $R_{\infty}$, that is, every automorphism has an infinite number of twisted conjugacy classes. In contrast, when $d=2$ the lamplighter groups $Γ_2(q)=L_q = {\mathbb Z}_q \wr {\mathbb Z}$ h…
We prove that finite lamplighter groups $\{\mathbb{Z}_2\wr\mathbb{Z}_n\}_{n\ge 2}$ with a standard set of generators embed with uniformly bounded distortions into any non-superreflexive Banach space, and therefore form a set of test-spaces for superreflexivity. Our proof is inspired by the well known identification of Cayley graphs of infinite lamplighter groups with the horocyclic product of trees. We cover $\mathbb{Z}_2\wr\mathbb{Z}_n$ by three sets with a structure similar to a horocyclic product of trees, which enables us to construct well-controlled embeddings.
Let T be the homogeneous tree with degree and G a finitely generated group whose Cayley graph is T. The associated lamplighter group is the wreath product of the cyclic group of order r with G. For a large class of random walks on this group, we prove almost sure convergence to a natural geometric boundary. If the probability law governing the random walk has finite first moment, then the probability space formed by this geometric boundary together with the limit distribution of the random walk is proved to be maximal, that is, the Poisson boundary. We also prove that the Dirichlet problem at …
We determine all positive harmonic functions for a large class of "semi-isotropic" random walks on the lamplighter group, i.e., the wreath product of the cyclic group of order q with the infinite cyclic group. This is possible via the geometric realization of a Cayley graph of that group as the Diestel-Leader graph DL(q,q). More generally, DL(q,r) is the horocyclic product of two homogeneous trees with respective degrees $q+1$ and $r+1$, and our result applies to all DL-graphs. This is based on a careful study of the minimal harmonic functions for semi-isotropic walks on trees.
We determine the precise asymptotic behaviour (in space) of the Green kernel of simple random walk with drift on the Diestel-Leader graph $DL(q,r)$, where $q,r \ge 2$. The latter is the horocyclic product of two homogeneous trees with respective degrees $q+1$ and $r+1$. When $q=r$, it is the Cayley graph of the wreath product (lamplighter group) ${\mathbb Z}_q \wr {\mathbb Z}$ with respect to a natural set of generators. We describe the full Martin compactification of these random walks on $DL$-graphs and, in particular, lamplighter groups. This completes and provides a better approach to prev…
The lamplighter group over $\mathbb Z$ is the wreath product $\mathbb Z_q \wr \mathbb Z$. With respect to a natural generating set, its Cayley graph is the Diestel-Leader graph $DL(q,q)$. We study harmonic functions for the "simple" Laplacian on this graph, and more generally, for a class of random walks on $DL(q,r)$, where $q,r \ge 2$. The DL-graphs are horocyclic products of two trees, and we give a full description of all positive harmonic functions in terms of the boundaries of these two trees. In particular, we determine the minimal Martin boundary, that is, the set of minimal positive ha…
We describe the infinite family of spider-web graphs $S_{k,M,N }$, $k \geq 2$, $M \geq 1$ and $N \geq 0$, studied in physical literature as tensor products of well-known de Brujin graphs $B_{k,N}$ and cyclic graphs $C_M$ and show that these graphs are Schreier graphs of the lamplighter groups $L_k = Z/kZ \wr Z$. This allows us to compute their spectra and to identify the infinite limit of $S_{k,M,N}$, as $N, M \to\infty$, with the Cayley graph of the lamplighter group $L_k$. This is the final version of the article, taking in account comments from the referees and with an extended introduction…
In this paper we introduce a way to estimate a level of closeness of Cayley automatic groups to the class of automatic groups using a certain numerical characteristic. We characterize Cayley automatic groups which are not automatic in terms of this numerical characteristic and then study it for the lamplighter group, the Baumslag--Solitar groups and the Heisenberg group.
The Diestel-Leader graph DL(q,r) is the horocyclic product of the homogeneous trees with respective degrees q+1 and r+1. When q=r, it is the Cayley graph of the lamplighter group (wreath product of the cyclic group of order q with the infinite cyclic group) with respect to a natural generating set. For the "Simple random walk" (SRW) operator on the latter group, Grigorchuk & Zuk and Dicks & Schick have determined the spectrum and the (on-diagonal) spectral measure (Plancherel measure). Here, we show that thanks to the geometric realization, these results can be obtained for all DL-graphs by di…
We introduce the notion of connection thickness of spheres in a Cayley graph, related to dead-ends and their retreat depth. It was well-known that connection thickness is bounded for finitely presented one-ended groups. We compute that for natural generating sets of lamplighter groups on a line or on a tree, connection thickness is linear or logarithmic respectively. We show that it depends strongly on the generating set. We give an example where the metric induced at the (finite) thickness of connection gives diameter of order $n^2$ to the sphere of radius $n$. We also discuss the rarity of d…
In this paper, we prove that certain spaces are not quasi-isometric to Cayley graphs of finitely generated groups. In particular, we answer a question of Woess and prove a conjecture of Diestel and Leader by showing that certain homogeneous graphs are not quasi-isometric to a Cayley graph of a finitely generated group. This paper is the first in a sequence of papers proving results announced in [EFW0]. In particular, this paper contains many steps in the proofs of quasi-isometric rigidity of lattices in Sol and of the quasi-isometry classification of lamplighter groups. The proofs of those res…
Let T_1,..., T_d be homogeneous trees with degrees q_1+1,..., q_d+1>=3, respectively. For each tree, let h:T_j->Z be the Busemann function with respect to a fixed boundary point (end). Its level sets are the horocycles. The horocyclic product of T_1,...,T_d is the graph DL(q_1,...,q_d) consisting of all d-tuples x_1...x_d in T_1x...xT_d with h(x_1)+...+h(x_d)=0, equipped with a natural neighbourhood relation. In the present paper, we explore the geometric, algebraic, analytic and probabilistic properties of these graphs and their isometry groups. If d=2 and q_1=q_2=q then we obtain a Cayley gr…
We use elementary methods to compute the L2-dimension of the eigenspaces of the Markov operator on the lamplighter group and of generalizations of this operator on other groups. In particular, we give a transparent explanation of the spectral measure of the Markov operator on the lamplighter group found by Grigorchuk-Zuk. The latter result was used by Grigorchuk-Linnell-Schick-Zuk to produce a counterexample to a strong version of the Atiyah conjecture about the range of L2-Betti numbers. We use our results to construct manifolds with certain L2-Betti numbers (given as convergent infinite sums…
We give the automata which describe time evolution rules of the box-ball system (BBS) with a carrier. It can be shown by use of tropical geometry, such systems are ultradiscrete analogues of KdV equation. We discuss their relation with the lamplighter group generated by an automaton. We present spectral analysis of the stochastic matrices induced by these automata, and verify their spectral coincidence.
In this paper we study spectral properties of adjacency and Laplace operators on percolation subgraphs of Cayley graphs of amenable, finitely generated groups. In particular we describe the asymptotic behaviour of the integrated density of states (spectral distribution function) of these random Hamiltonians near the spectral minimum. The first part of the note discusses various aspects of the quantum percolation model, subsequently we formulate a series of new results, and finally we outline the strategy used to prove our main theorem.
Let $G$ be a finite group, and $S$ be a subset of $G\setminus\{1\}$ such that $S=S^{-1}$. Suppose that $Cay(G,S)$ is the Cayley graph on $G$ with respect to the set $S$ which is the graph whose vertex set is $G$ and two vertices $a,b\in G$ are adjacent if and only if $ab^{-1}\in S$. The adjacency spectrum $Spec(Γ)$ of a graph $Γ$ is the multiset of eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. A graph $Γ$ is called "determined by its spectrum" (or for short DS) whenever if a graph $Γ'$ has the same spectrum as $Γ$, then $Γ\cong Γ'$. We say that the group $G$ is DS (Cay-DS, respectively) whenever if $Γ$…
Renteln proved that the eigenvalues of the distance matrix of a Cayley graph of a real reflection group with respect to the set of all reflections are integral and provided a combinatorial formula for some such spectra. We prove the eigenvalues of the distance, adjacency, and codimension matrices of Cayley graphs of complex reflection groups with connection sets consisting of all reflections are integral and provide a combinatorial formula for the codimension spectra for a family of monomial complex reflection groups.
Motivated by the Benjamini-Schramm non-unicity of percolation conjecture we study the following question. For a given finitely generated non-amenable group $Γ$, does there exist a generating set $S$ such that the Cayley graph $(Γ,S)$, without loops and multiple edges, has non-unique percolation, i.e., $p_c(Γ,S)<p_u(Γ,S)$? We show that this is true if $Γ$ contains an infinite normal subgroup $N$ such that $Γ/ N$ is non-amenable. Moreover for any finitely generated group $G$ containing $Γ$ there exists a generating set $S'$ of $G$ such that $p_c(G,S')<p_u(G,S')$. In particular this applies to fr…
The Laplacian of a (weighted) Cayley graph on the Weyl group $W(B_n)$ is a $N\times N$ matrix with $N = 2^n n!$ equal to the order of the group. We show that for a class of (weighted) generating sets, its spectral gap (lowest nontrivial eigenvalue), is actually equal to the spectral gap of a $2n \times 2n$ matrix associated to a $2n$-dimensional permutation representation of $W_n$. This result can be viewed as an extension to $W(B_n)$ of an analogous result valid for the symmetric group, known as `Aldous' spectral gap conjecture', proven in 2010 by Caputo, Liggett and Richthammer.
-- We show a spectral gap property for the family of Cayley graphs obtained by reduction modulo $q$ of a subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}_d(\mathbb{Z})$ whose Zariski closure is a simple $\mathbb{Q}$-group.
A measure-scaling quasi-isometry between two connected graphs is a quasi-isometry that is quasi-$κ$-to-one in a natural sense for some $κ>0$. For non-amenable graphs, all quasi-isometries are quasi-$κ$-to-one for any $κ>0$, while for amenable ones there exists at most one possible such $κ$. For an amenable graph $X$, we show that the set of possible $κ$ forms a subgroup of $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ that we call the (measure-)scaling group of $X$. This group is invariant under measure-scaling quasi-isometries. In the context of Cayley graphs, this implies for instance that two uniform lattices in a giv…
In this paper, we explore the spectral measures of the Laplacian on Schreier graphs for several self-similar groups (the Grigorchuk, Lamplighter, and Hanoi groups) from the dynamical and algebro-geometric viewpoints. For these graphs, classical Schur renormalization transformations act on appropriate spectral parameters as rational maps in two variables. We show that the spectra in question can be interpreted as asymptotic distributions of slices by a line of iterated pullbacks of certain algebraic curves under the corresponding rational maps (leading us to a notion of a spectral current). We …
Let $G$ be a group and $S\subseteq G$ its subset such that $S=S^{-1}$, where $S^{-1}=\{s^{-1}\mid s\in S\}$. Then {\it the Cayley graph ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$} is an undirected graph $Γ$ with the vertex set $V(Γ)=G$ and the edge set $E(Γ)=\{(g,gs)\mid g\in G, s\in S\}$. A graph $Γ$ is said to be {\it integral} if every eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $Γ$ is integer. In the paper, we prove the following theorem: {\it if a subset $S=S^{-1}$ of $G$ is normal and $s\in S\Rightarrow s^k\in S$ for every $k\in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $(k,|s|)=1$, then ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$ is integral.} In particular, {\it …
A one-by-one exhaustion is a combinatorial/geometric condition which excludes eigenvalues from the spectra of Laplace and Schrödinger operators on graphs. Isoperimetric inequalities in graphs with a cocompact automorphism group provide an upper bound on the von Neumann dimension of the space of eigenfunctions. Any finitely generated indicable amenable group has a Cayley graph without eigenvalues. There exists a finitely generated group G with finite generating sets S and S' such that the adjacency operator of the Cayley graph of (G,S) has no eigenvalue while the adjacency operator of the Cayle…
We study Schroedinger operators with random edge weights and their expected spectral measures $μ_H$ near zero. We prove that the measure exhibits a spike of the form $μ_H(-\varepsilon,\varepsilon) \sim \frac{C}{| \log\varepsilon|^2}$ (first observed by Dyson), without assuming independence or any regularity of edge weights. We also identify the limiting local eigenvalue distribution, which is different from Poisson and the usual random matrix statistics. We then use the result to compute Novikov-Shubin invariants for various groups, including lamplighter groups and lattices in the Lie group So…
Numerical estimates are given for the spectral radius of simple random walks on Cayley graphs. Emphasis is on the case of the fundamental group of a closed surface, for the usual system of generators.
We prove an inequality on the difference between the spectral radius of the Cayley graph of a group $G$ and the spectral radius of the Schreier graph $H\backslash G$ for any subgroup $H$. As an application we extend Kesten's theorem on spectral radii to uniformly recurrent subgroups and give a short proof that the result of Lyons and Peres on cycle density in Ramanujan graphs holds on average. More precisely, we show that if $\mathcal G$ is an infinite deterministic Ramanujan graph, then the time spent in short cycles by a random walk of length $n$ is $o(n)$.
We prove a general large sieve statement in the context of random walks on subgraphs of a given graph. This can be seen as a generalization of previously known results where one performs a random walk on a group enjoying a strong spectral gap property. In such a context the point is to exhibit a strong uniform expansion property for a suitable family of Cayley graphs on quotients. In our combinatorial approach, this is replaced by a result of Alon--Roichman about expanding properties of random Cayley graphs. Applying the general setting we show e.g., that with high probability (in a strong exp…
Żuk proved that if a finitely generated group admits a Cayley graph such that the Laplacian on the links of this Cayley graph has a spectral gap $> \frac{1}{2}$, then the group has property (T), or equivalently, every affine isometric action of the group on a Hilbert space has a fixed point. We prove that the same holds for affine isometric actions of the group on a uniformly curved Banach space (for example an $L^p$-space with $1 < p < \infty$ or an interpolation space between a Hilbert space and an arbitrary Banach space) as soon as the Laplacian on the links has a two-sided spectral gap $>1…
We prove a general version of the amenability conjecture in the unified setting of a Gromov hyperbolic group G acting properly cocompactly either on its Cayley graph, or on a CAT(-1)-space. Namely, for any subgroup H of G, we show that H is co-amenable in G if and only if their exponential growth rates (with respect to the prescribed action) coincide. For this, we prove a quantified, representation-theoretical version of Stadlbauer's amenability criterion for group extensions of a topologically transitive subshift of finite type, in terms of the spectral radii of the classical Ruelle transfer …
